The What went wrong for India thread

Indian batting currently relies only on top order, and today they failed if you compare from past India got a fragile middle order. I don't think Kohli is the captain if he is then he needs to captain the side currently only Dhoni is doing it.

Above all that Dhoni he turned from a likable cricketer to a very very bad one, and he should retire his batting or Indian batting against England was extremely poor with no intent to win the game, and Dhoni just kept the trend to the semi-final and got busted.
 
why select guys after their sell by dates?

I don't know what has dk ever done to be selected as a batsman? Why not play a specialist batsman?

Dhoni has been showing for some time that he isnt the same but he was selected on his reputation and it backfired.

Exactly right! I think this happened for good! All the players you mentioned have to go out! Dhoni can retire on a high (some kind of innings at the end!) If he still stays he will have no shame left and will further dent the new team formation! Pant will be a different man if he plays as proper WK/Batsman and if he is regular/certain in the team (like in Tests) He doesn't have to bat at No.4. Pant should bat at No.6 and Pandya at No.7, they should not be promoted up like this always (in all the matches!) This clearly shows that we lack "REGULAR" batsmen to take up the responsibility!

Rahul should go back to domestic and come back only if he is good enough and if a replacement is available in the team!
 
Having only two specialist middle order batsmen in squad which were Kohli and Jhadav(On the wrong side of 30's) in the squad was really poor team selection.

3 keepers in Karthik, Pant, Dhoni and couple of allrounders in Pandya and Shankar.

Let's see if kohli is fined for dissent against umpire when he was given out
 
Overall this was a disastrous campaign for team India because only Rohit and Bumrah were consistently good.
 
Indias bowling is killer but I think their batting was made to look better this tournament through dropped catches and advantage of batting first.

Not to take anything away from them but I think they could have been exposed earlier and known of these issues.
 
Paid for not having specialist batsmen. Three wicket keepers says it all.
 
The way Dhoni threw away the match against Eng sucked the life out of their campaign.

Putting IPL players in the middle order will never solve the players, Why way Gill not selected for middle order spot? Because he doesnt look as good in IPL. Indian fans are getting blinded by IPL cricket which is not same as Internationals.
 
It was a proper choke by the indian top 3 and it had to happen in a semifinal of all games :facepalm:

You gave the answer yourself. Middle order only gets us close to winning.But top order wins us the games.
 
Top order failed completely. Top three got out for one run each. How can you expect such a top heavy side to win the match from such a situation? It was one of those days... Kohli’s poor form has been an issue for us throughout the tournament. Rohit’s performances masked it to a certain extent but it has been an issue. Dhoni should consider retiring now. IPL style 20 off the last over approach is unlikely to work on alien wickets with the pressure of international cricket. Still his fan though.

just because we are Pakistanis, does it mean we cannot comment on Indian cricket team, their performances, issues and their possible solutions?

If you dont like to hear from Pakistani fans then why are you on this forum even? lol that is rich
 
I think we have seen the last of India’s golden generation (kohli, rohit, dhawan). It’s all downhill from here.
 
They weren't as good as we thought. They batted with weak intent in the England game, and again here. I didn't go along with those who thought they would throw the England game to spite Pakistan, but they certainly batted like it. But perhaps they just aren't as good as the hype.

International cricket you need proper players unlike IPL or any such leagues where bit of talent can do the trick. Gil is a proper player and in my case could have solved India's middle order problems.

Everyone knew it beforehand! PP has enough threads & discussions on this! This team lacked two REGULAR batsmen (they didn't had to have any extra skills of bowling or wicket-keeping!) And today even players like Iyer, Pandey would have done the job for us! Such pathetic was the selection with wicket-keepers & alrounders (Pandya, Jadeja) having to take up the responsibility of regular batsmen! Just the same team with Pant coming at No.6, Pandya at No.7, Jadeja at No.8 would have been absolutely fine for us and it would have been a comfortable chase! Yes as some folks here said we should have had Agarwal in this match (or the last league match) as opener or No.4 instead of 3 wicket-keepers! It wouldn't have mattered if he joined the team late! Such pathetic was the initial squad and so many changes in between!

They're not that good but to not even try is a clear sign that the intent was missing.
 
Had they tried to chase against England and failed, they would have time to prepare for this chase and improve in retrospect.

They didn't even attempt that chase which in the last 10 overs was very very similar!
 
Here to state Kohli has had an underwhelming tournament, by his standards
 
1. Poor team selection (Dhoni, DK, Jadhav, etc)
2. Overhyped cricketers (Rahul, Pandya, and Kuldeep)
3. Virat Kohli's bottling in tournament knockouts
4. Dhawan's absence
 
Said it before they are not ruthless. They are a soft bunch. The way they chased vs ENG for what ever reasons showed they lack killer instinct. They were all laughing after that game as if nothing happened. The reason AUS is 5 times champ is cause they are ruthless. They never give.

Even for our boys. This tournament was so open and they just throwed it away.

With the bat, India is all about Kohli and Sharma. If they come across a disciplined opposition like NZ in overcast English conditions then they are in trouble. NZ did also hammer them in the warm-up matches, so I am not sure why people thought India was favourite for the semis.

The win against NZ did not count since it was on a sluggish pitch.

Ind have over 15 other good batsman to chose from but couldn't find/ pick 2. Pants is 6/7 and will be amazing but he isn't a 4 or a 5. DK is good player but surely Ind had better options at 5.

dont you think the game was lost when Dhoni hid behind Pant and injured Pandya? .... his similar innings at no 4 could have won the game? i think he was a little afraid facing the new ball in swininging conditions. even our professor wont hide (he wont succeed is a different story all together lol but he wont slide down)

as for Kholi, come on man.. he is an ATG .. he scores and scores and scores.. talk about how good Sharma was in this cup, but he was dropped wat 9 times ... kholi with a "Bad" wc still probably has an avg above 50 .... kholi got a good ball , got out ... but dhoni should have taken it on himself and bat at no4... 70 of 120 balls even would have won india the game given how poorly NZ 5th bowler was bowling

Karma is very real. Pakistan got theirs for years of trying to take short cuts and thinking they can keep getting away with lack of investment, India got what was coming to them for taking their foot off the gas in the England game.

that 45 vs AFG was probably the most difficult runs he made ... it was such a difficult pitch and Afg spinners were bowling probably the best they ever had... the way he man-handeled Rashid was a beauty to watch .... nd that too with a hamstring problem ...

Babar is a class apart... he needs those muscles to get his game just a bit above Root, who now i think is no4 on the top 4 list .... that in ODI .. in tests he needs a lot of work ...

his innings in CT were not much to talk abt .. all under limited pressure situations.. the damages had been done before he walked in but you can say his calmness helped wrap up the games but they aint the ones to remember
 
We've always known that the India middle order was a weak one, yet nothing was done to improve it. The arrogance shown by BCCI and the selectors in sticking with Dhoni and other non-performers like DK and Jadhav simply came home to roost. We would not have seen this day had they brought in Pant, Shaw, Iyer and a few other youngsters much earlier and groomed them for this WC.

I hope the lessons are learned at least now.

I agree with you. But I am just mentioning the numbers which seem better than some of the great bastmen of the world including Kohli.

He has been failing in big occasions since 2014. I have posted this many a times in the forum before and now it has come to haunt us on not so difficult pitch to chase 240, massive disappointment
 
Some fans may not get it but India are the semifinalists and group stage toppers.

Some posters are posting as if India got kicked out before the knockouts.

Investing 2-3 years in players like Shankar DK Jadhav Rahane instead of Mayank Pant Ishan Shaw would have paid better dividends.

mate, if Babar can go neck n neck with kholi, trust me we will be best team in the world... the XI that played for us vs Bang, they will suddenly become the ATGz.... our problem has been the absence of the leader ... Sarfraz is gutsy but his own performance is crap... put an aggressive performing played at the top and we have the game by the throat ....

I watched that whole match, the body language and the way they were all behaving was quite evident.

Infact, even a tie met that Australia would go through and India would be out.

I also watched the whole match and what you are saying is not correct.
 
Players like Rahul & Pant aren't what their made out to be.

Dhoni has aged and over reliance on Sharma and Kohli.
 
TBH I thought India was going to win this easily.

I think a few things didnt go their way:
- Easy to say now but didnt restrict NZ to a lower total
- The two day gap and low score might have mentally played against the Indians
- Dhoni's batting
 
rohit Sharma's luck ran out.I know he scored lots of runs but in every match he lets off (dropped catches,run out chances).NZ bowlers bowled very well up front.I was confident NZ will trouble India if the pitch offered something for bowlers.The better team won the match.Dhoni's run out the turning point.
 
Well this is what happens when Flat track bullies have to play swing and seam.

I think Pakistan would have easily beaten India on this pitch as well, had they qualified.

Flat Tracks and Roads have made some batsman look better than they are.

As I said on the other thread, India out is Karma.
After what seemed deliberate loss against England that day. I am now more sure it was deliberate because one of my friends dad picked Dhoni up in a taxi in Leeds before the Sri Lanka game. He asked Dhoni did you lose on purpose against England to eliminate Pakistan? To which he started to laugh. That’s obvious as why would one laugh when accused of such a serious thing. You would think his reaction would be of anger not laughter.

India is out of the WC so topping the group stages does not matter.
 
Why the need for 3 wicket-keepers?

The batting was heavily reliant on Sharma and Kohli and if they failed, most of the rest weren't going to show up and that proved correct today.
 
What hurts most is we had the team to win.But lost out due to sheer poor long term planning and one trick pony strategy with no plan B.(top 3 or bust)And we lost to an inferior team.


What went wrong -
Kohli is a bad captain who needs dhoni's support and makes reactive selections and random decisions.
Kohli and his cheerleader shastri is primarily responsible for "top 3 or bust' strategy with no plan B and everyone else has to play around them.They are responsible for never giving mayank a chance despite 50 plus average and not blooding in pant,while wasting 2 years on shankar,dk ,kedar and rayudu.
Kohli has done 3 good attributes as a leader- he genuinely loves his team,he always tries to lead from the front,he has backed wicket taking bowlers throughout and made this fast bowling attack so good,he has radically improved fitness standards.But everything else is poor.
Shastri is a waste.He will not disagree with kohli or firmly go against him.We needed a proper manager like kirsten and an actual psychologist for mentally weak rahul and kuldeep.
Shastri and kohli are also at fault for obsession with 'experience'.

The other culprit is dhoni who leeched his legacy to lead us into this disaster.
The final factor was dhawan's injury.Dhawan was our tournament man.

Hope now england wins the cup.They are deserving and i don't want another aussie victory at any cost
 
Brittle middle order they needed an experienced pro like Rahane Raina or may be Pujara also there is clash of personality Dhoni should have been to sent at least at 5 so that a partnership should be developed and Pandya comes in after that but may be Kohli was Afraid that Dhoni might hog the limelight again all in all India's cockiness led to their downfall

Well, to be honest nobody thought Karthik would be this bad. We clearly don’t have the kinda quality England has down the order. But again if the top 3 batsmen get out scoring just 1 run each, any team would struggle. I personally feel India did well to fight back from such a terrible position. People here are throwing around words like chokers in their excitement (which is weird), but I think the middle order showed some fight today. Remember we were 5/3 and 24/4 :).
