Everybody knew that if top 3 fails we are a done for. We knew on a pitch like this we are vulunrable. Unreasonable to expect Dhoni to pull off considering all his centuries have come in subcontinent and he is no longer the Dhoni we knew. What we feared took place today so I'm not too dissapointed.
Ya why are the other 10 idiots in the team for ? Kohli has done his duties and did play like the ODI goat. He failed today, the rest of the idiots should have picked up their acts. Jadeja did well, but rest were whack.
Now I understand the meaning of "Finisher".......he finished us off. This was one of easier WC tournaments for us. Next WC SL will be strong, WI, AFG and Bangladesh will also be strong, it is going to be tough. Some of our players will be in wrong side of 30s. Unfit players like Rohit Sharma has like 2 years left then he won't be match fit. We missed the easiest chance to win the WC.

I didn't post todayIndia's issue on why they haven't achieved much in cricket is how the sport is structured within the country. The Indian cricket team is effectively a Maharashtra, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat national team. Around 90% of the players are from those areas/states. Cricket structure and the popularity is almost non-existent in places like Goa, Kerala, West Bengal and the north-eastern territories. You could chat to someone from Goa and they'd be completely oblivious to today's India game and more interested in the upcoming I-League/ISL. Just look at Australia and how successful they are.....their cricket structure is great all throughout the entire country and they are producing players from everywhere.
Basically, cricket is a regional sport in India and when this is the case, 9 out of 10, it makes it difficult to find great players all around the field.

Everyone know Karthik is bad..Well, to be honest nobody thought Karthik would be this bad. We clearly don’t have the kinda quality England has down the order. But again if the top 3 batsmen get out scoring just 1 run each, any team would struggle. I personally feel India did well to fight back from such a terrible position. People here are throwing around words like chokers in their excitement (which is weird), but I think the middle order showed some fight today. Remember we were 5/3 and 24/4.

India needed another genuine opener, Rahul looks out of sort when the ball is moving. Rohit got a beautiful delivery, Kohli choked but Rahul made a mess of it. If it was Dhawan he would have battled it out.

India lost match due to Bhuvi
(for not taking wicket upfront), Pant and Pandya (by throwing their wicket away after well set).. But Dhoni should've come after 5/3, but he hides behind Pandya's which is not good especially after he's the only one who can bat longer innings...

Because we were not good enough . We did not develop players for the format and ended up with 3 wicketkeepers in the squad. And then playing the likes of Jadhav etc. After all that, we lost Dhawan as well and that cost us.

And Kohli's one was a tactical mistake, had he stands where he hit umpires wouldn't have given that out considering it's hit high and there's a big stride..

Tough luck brother. I was expecting India to win this match, I think it's better to go with genuine middle order batsmen then relying on sloggers. Pant's dismissal was shocking given the circumstance even Kohli was ****** off.

India have an ok middle order but not a world class one that can scare the opposition. Rahul looks very iffy with his technique. He looks decent in Asian conditions but seems confused with static footwork outside his home conditions.
Dhoni was on his last legs this tournament, he should call it a day but since he brings millions to BCCis coffers maybe it’s not his decision to make.
Bowlers were decent especially Bumrah and did well overall barring the England game.

They've only got two proper batsmen in Kohli and Rohit. They missed Dhawan.
Guys like Rahul and Pant don't even do well in list A cricket, it was unrealistic newly to the team that they'd perform consistently. Rahul especially has shown to struggle with the ODI format, it was hard for him to suddenly click at the world cup.
Dhoni's past it. Pandya's an allrounder and not someone you really want on tougher pitches/to grind it out. Karthik has repeatedly failed at international level, he's not young anymore and the reason why Dhoni is still playing is because this guy hasn't stepped up and taken the wicketkeeper spot.
Looking back on it it's actually not a great batting line up at all. Rohit scoring centuries nearly every match probably hid that. It's only great if you had Dhawan there, they lost a third of their batting with him out. And even then their middle/lower order is very weak, weaker than a lot of teams.
Their bowling was very good, and was the strongest point of India's campaign with Rohit.
I can't believe a team like India couldn't have brought better batsmen in their squad with so much batting talent. Why not include some guys who actually performed in the domestic one day format rather than just multiple wicketkeepers.

Karthik is a so-called finisher, Dhoni is a so-called finisher.
How many finishers did they want.
Instead of Karthik they should have had a proper batsman to hold the middle-order together.

Karthik is finished. Not finisher. The only reason he got into the team is because the chairman of selectors is from that zone. Else as a wk batsman Karthik wont even get into India 4th line up.

I don’t know what Pakistan has to do with me celebrating.
India did not knock us out, in fact, they beat us like 99% of Pakistani fans predicted they would.
India had a better tournament than Pakistan but don’t try and pretend like you are satisfied.
Indian fans on this forum and online treated NZ (along with some commentators) like pushovers and got what they deserved.
Maybe Major Dhoni can retire into the Army where his services are better required.

I actually like most of the Ind players, its most of their fans I can't stand. There are some very good and fair Ind fans ( and we some on this forum) but they are few in number.

Nothing against Indian players or their fans, I know a fair few too. Its the same as Man Utd, as an LFC fan I want them to lose never to win but give credit where its due.
Jadeja showed good fight and the Bumrah bowled really well but the arrogance and lack of tactical knowhow ruined them. India had a great chance to win the world cup but blew out.

Pant and Pandya too are more like finishers than accumulators.
But I don’t think Karthik’s role was that of a finisher in this XI despite what his records suggest. It probably was of someone who can contribute with useful 50s or 60s. He’s also a busy player. Rotates the strike and if I remember correctly, good against short length bowling too. He has been around for a long time, so the sentiment probably was to give him that very important no.4 slot because of his experience and relatively risk free batting style unlike some of the youngsters.
I think India made another mistake by exposing their best batsmen to the new ball by placing them all in the top three. I think Dhawan’s absence was sorely missed here in terms of batting depth as well as for forcing the bowlers to change the line.
And you need someone in the middle order who can drag the team out of trouble in case things go bad at the top. Taylor did it for NZ. Dhoni was supposed to be that guy for India, but he failed miserably. All champion sides have had such a player in the middle order. Our champion accumulator cum finisher is past his prime and there’s this sentimental attachment the team and the fans (including myself) have towards him because of which we’re not willing to drop him. Dhoni has gifted so many pleasant memories not just to us but to the entire cricketing fraternity but maybe it’s finally time to say “thanks for everything “.
India had the worst possible start to their innings. Not everyday will we see Rohit, Rahul and Kohli get out for 1 run each. I don’t think we’ll ever see that again to be honest. It was that kinda day. Kohli did admit that this loss is very difficult to digest. Nightmarish performance really. So World Cup won’t come to Asia this time either. Hope we’ll able to win one in our own backyard in 2023. But I feel this was the best chance for all Asian sides, particularly India.
There were a few things that cost India in this World Cup.
1) It seems our neighbours are no better at being ruthless enough to drop seniors well past their prime. Dhoni reminded me of the selection of Javed Miandad in 1996 where he still had an aura but you could see the reflexes were gone. Karthik's inclusion was pointless when they already had another keeper batsman in Pant.
2) An over-reliance on the top order. All it takes is one injury (Dhawan) and you find cracks opening that you thought you papered over.
3) Failure to groom a young middle-order batsman. I've no idea why Shaw was sidelined, that kid looked a million bucks when I saw his innings vs West Indies last autumn. Pant is an aggressive batsman but his temperament was found wanting today with a crazy shot that seemed to incense Kohli.
4) The two spinners who have been pivotal for India since the Champions Trophy had a relatively quiet tournament. Wrist spin generally failed to live up to expectations on slow and wearing surfaces that perhaps suited accurate finger spinners more like Santner. Chahal had a bad semi-final, struggling with his pace and lengths, conceding 15-20 runs extra that proved to be VERY costly.

Chasing generally in such an important match would be difficult. Even 240 in a semi for a good batting line up like India's was gonna be testing. It was just that New Zealand bowled exceptionally well taking early wickets that did it for them. What went wrong for India was New Zealand bowled and fielded so well. Once Sharma and Kohli were dismissed India's middle order that is not as strong was always gonna struggle. I supported New Zealand will all my heart today. Even the thought of India reaching the final is grotesque.

Nothing. They are a phenomenal who were simply second best on the day to a team that is fantastic in swinging conditions. This defeat wasn't a fluke - New Zealand deserved it. Nonetheless, India should go home with their heads high. They had a brilliant World Cup. A pity we missed out on an England vs. India final though. Both teams deserved to win the World Cup more than others.

Bhuvi is terrific when it comes to swinging conditions. Shami is world class as well, but you cannot leave Bumrah out in any conditions. Playing Shami, Bhuvi, Chahal and Bumrah together weakens India's already weak tail. Perhaps they could have dropped Chahal and gone with Jadeja as the sole spinner on this track, but you always see things more clearly in hindsight.

I think alot does come down to team selection when you have a top fielder in Jadeja sitting out all 8 games, someone who can break partnerships get crucial wickets and be a handy bat down the order.
The top 4 because I would include Dhawan before he got injured, really carried India in this tournament, although I would state how lucky Rohit Sharma has been with the amount of lifelines teams gave him otherwise he would be in the dugout if those catches were taken and those run outs were done better.
India always had that weak middle order who were only tested properly in the Afghan game, thats where is made sense that India were all about their new bowling attack in Bumrah and their spinners and their top 3 batsman.
Losing Dhawan out to injury did not help because him and Sharma were well set in this tournament and really worked well together too but injuries happen and thats when you use plan b.
In todays game, the untested middle order was exposed very early when your 6-3 down which you don't often see with India but even though it was a joy to watch, this is a no.1 odi team which is a favourite in every tournament that is the expectation.
I don't think heads will roll or captaincy will change hands but players will need to be accounted for and Kohli is a great captain but his batting was not up to the mark and his sr in the beginning showed that because he is not often known to bat a low sr.
The media have gone mad and berserk and saying all sorts.
Dhoni has been a shadow of himself but thats not his fault, its his age and he has slowed down, but it wasnt his choice that he was selected, he did the best he could and used his cricketing mind and intelligence to lead and motivate the players and also this gave Kohli breathing space because he knew he always had Dhoni to rely on.
Now his true captaincy will be tested without the assistance and intelligence of Dhoni plus he loses a great wicket keeper too.

It's too soon probably to judge what went wrong, but for starters, it was the inability to adapt to different playing conditions. England has the exact same issue and they will be praying that they don't get similar playing conditions (pitch/weather) against either AUS or NZ if they qualify for the final.
He played it perfect I reckon. Took the game deep.
He would have needed 23 off 9. He would have been looking for one boundary of the last 3 balls and then it would have been him Vs Neesham man to man in the last over. I would have backed dhoni
Very very fine margins.
He had to give it to jadeja to take it on, and then he picked up whatever was left thereafter , like we saw with the 6 over point.

Here’s what went wrong (only in this match). The top 3 got out cheaply and the middle order was exposed for the first time, which was always a fear for this Indian team. I still can’t believe how close they brought it though. This was some fight back after losing ICC Number 1 and 2 ranked backbone of batting batsmen on only 1 run each. Boult and Henry were superb and on point in that first spell, incredible bowling. They deserve full credit. I’m starting to become a little fan of Kane Williamson, the Wall of NZL!

One line. Murphy's law. Everything that can go wrong went wrong for India. NZ was clearly a superior team in the semi final. NO regrets. They deserve every bit to go into final. Congrats. Good luck. Hope India learns from mistakes and fix their repeated failures in knockout stages. India has the talent. Not the end of the world. At the end of the day only one team is going to win the world cup. 9 won't be able to. Whoever does that deserves it.

Against Sri Lanka once Rohit got out, we should have given chance to Jadeja or Dinesh or Bhuvi to bat to give them some match practise but no, he just wanted to go there and get some cheap runs. Dhoni as captain used to ensure that every player gets to bat before big matches.

The reason is simple, and it's in the stats of FTB Sharma. See his test average and thank heavens the loser met his match on the first testing pitch India has got all tournament.

Obviously the top order failed and the middle order was untested and succumbed under the pressure. I couldn't help but think though that after everything that happened had Dhoni played at a strike rate of around 95%-100% this would have been a very very different game.

They got carried away by Rayudu's exploits in the IPL last year and backed him. Then got cold feet because of his performance in the home series against Australia and dropped him from the World Cup squad and brought in players who they barely played all year like Rahul and Pant, and in Mayank Agarwal's case, he hadn't even played a single ODI.
Selectors and team management need to be held accountable for their pathetic planning.

Whatever could go wrong went wrong -
1. Over reliance on top order
2. Not learning from mistakes and playing a weak middle order; we did try our best but Pant was too raw. He will come good in the future
3. Not discarding has beens like Karthik a lot earlier
4. Not improving zilch against swing bowling even when you were exposed a billion times before this

I blame you guys.
They did not get carried away. It was the lobby and politics that ensured Rayudu play and get some soft runs. There was Mayank Agarwal, Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill later but they were not given enough chances. That gamble with Rahul did not work either even though his attitude was pretty evident and the writing was on the wall.

You have to give credit to the team that defended such a meager total. Full credit to them. India losing wickets in heaps up the order is not something new.

How Dinesh Karthik keeps getting selected simply amazes me. Even, Pakistan has moved on from Akmal brothers.
DK was rubbish back in 2005 and he is still rubbish after 14 years. No matter, what the situation is, you cannot take 21 balls to score your first run in modern ODI cricket.

DK was a lost cause.
Shankar has batting ability but dunno if he belongs to this level and needs time to mature. We can't just directly send him to WC and ask him to perform.
Same can be said for Mayank and Pant but I would back them over these 2. lol.

Poor planning: the curious case of KL’s batting position. They never let him settle. As soon as he laid his claim on 4 they moved him back to the opening slot.
Followers of the game would recall that the number 4 position was India’s biggest problem before the WC. KL was finally settling in the role. They should have brought in some opener when Dhawan got injured and continued with KL at 4.
I think anyone who doesn’t agree with this is dimwitted.

Our batting is non-existent after No.3. They cannot score 150 runs together if their lives depended on it.
Our tail is a disgrace with the bat. The last 4 cannot even score 10 runs together.
India achieved what they have built their team for. Good for group stages. In crunch elimination games against good bowling units, we usually get exposed. CT2017 was no aberration. Indian selectors, Captain and Coach did nothing to address that.

Pant was not even in the plans. He was brought in when Karthik was already there. It was a decent decision. But when Dhawan was injured, he should have been replaced by another opener. Agarwal should have played after that.
Anyway, its easy to say this in the hindsight. What did us was the poor middle and Tail. The worst you can imagine.
I am not a fan of bowlers who cannot provide anything if their fail with the ball. India were carrying 4 such bowlers. BK is not a hitter. He can block. Chahal and Bumrah are worse than chris martin and Kuldeep is good for singles at his best.
Only Bumrah gets a pass because he is a world class bowler. Chahal and Kuldeep if they cannot bat, they will be replaced by bowlers who can bat. You will see that soon. Jaddu already took the place of Kuldeep.
Look when the tail came in, starting with BK at number 9, India needed 32 of 13 balls. What do you expect of them?
Then Dhoni got out in the next over before BK had faced a ball.
India didn’t lose this match because their tail didn’t contribute. They lost because the top order had an uncharacteristic failure and the middle order was just not good enough.
Yes as Kohli said, they were done and dusted after the first few overs.
It was only really a freak of an innings by Jadeja that brought India even close to the NZ total.

Top 3 scored all runs just like in CT, Indias strength was also its weakness.
India need a game during WC when there middle order bailed them out and won a game under pressure. That didnt happen and come the game when TOP 3 failed the middle order was under cooked and couldnt save them.

That did happen in a warmup against NZ I think where KL scored an 80 odd but the ‘think tank’ moved him to the opening slot just when he had finally solved Ind’s number 4 conundrum.
They should have tested reserve openers like Mayank or Shaw against Aussies in the series before WC. Even Pakistan experimented in their series before WC.
