"They’re wonderfully skilled cricketers and I just hope Aus sees the best of them" : Mickey Arthur

The only person to coach both the Australia and Pakistan cricket teams admits he will be cheering for the visitors when they begin their three-match series at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Sunday.

“I’ve obviously got blokes I’ve worked with on both sides who I still watch with a special affinity — but I suppose more particularly with the Pakistan boys,” Mickey Arthur said.

“They were all young boys when I brought them through, and so I watch their performances with a lot of affection. Certainly Babar Azam, Mohammad Amir, Shadab Khan, Imad Wasim, these are guys I’ve really worked quite hard with, so I’m keen to watch them progress.

“Azam is a wonderful batsmen, and I want to see likes of Haris Sohail get a really good crack, I also want to see Amir bowl and Khan with his tricks. They’re wonderfully skilled cricketers and I just hope Australia sees the best of them.”

Although more accustomed to taking in the action from the stands with his teams, 51-year-old Arthur — who was axed by Pakistan in August following their lacklustre performance in the World Cup — said he would have to settle for following it from further afield this summer after signing with Indian pay-TV sports network Sony Ten.

“It’s absolutely absurd — it’s in Australia, it’s against Pakistan, and I’m working on the series but … I’m covering it all from a studio in Mumbai,” he said.

He said he looked forward to seeing both sides play aggressive cricket, but also wanted Pakistan to demonstrate they were more than capable of competing in Australian conditions against a team on the ascendancy.

“I like way both attacks shape up, certainly they’re both very attacking and that’s the way to go in T20 cricket. It’s certainly how we worked with Pakistan — they’re all attacking T20 bowlers with the mindset to take wickets,” Arthur said.

Channel 9 should have signed him on to their panel in Aus - would be spicy to see crack away at Misbah's decisions :moyo2

I miss Mickey! I just loved his passion for Pakistan cricket and we can say all we like about him being a poor tactician, there's no way he's as bad as Misbah

Wow Mickey still care about Pak cricket, looks like a true gentleman, wish he could more tactical and sensible.

Quite sadly, the t20s arent broadcasted on channel 9 anymore and from what i know the tests might be in Fox Sports only.

I hope he is reappointed when Misbah gets fired after the WT20

Misbah should only be CS his selections are actually very good.

A coach and a leader are some features that he does not possess.

Mickey's a Pakistani at heart.

You clearly see notice his passion for the younger squad members who he brought in and trained. Miss him :(

So Pakistan has got rid of a coach who treasured and nurtured and groomed young players, and has replaced him with a guy who dumps the youngsters in favour of men in their thirties.
