Was having a discussion with a friend in the morning about the annoying things in cricket.
The phrase “the batsman is trusting the pitch”.
When a batsman gets a thick outside edge and it goes for four, the commentators usually call it deliberate.
Leg-byes and byes. If a batsman fails to hit the ball with the bat, he should not be allowed to get runs. Only exception should be if the slips through the hands of the keeper because that is a fielding error.
However, if a batsman gets hit on the pads or is beaten and the ball lands in the gloves if the keeper, that should be it. You cannot score runs in those instances.
“Soft signals”. They usually mean little and are often controversial.
Umpires not showing flexibility when it comes to breaks. India had to wait for 45 mins to score 2 runs to win the game because the umpires called for lunch. That was beyond ridiculous. A little common sense will not hurt.
Elbow guards. It is a necessity for many batsmen, but from the perspective of a viewer, it doesn’t look good aesthetically. Batsmen lose their elegance.
Spinners bowling with their sunglasses on - heights of snobbery.
Batsmen who take their helmets off after scoring a 50 (all young Pakistani batsmen) and batsmen who don’t take their helmets off after scoring a hundred (Dhoni, Malik), and batsmen who some times bat without a helmet or a cap (Dhoni again).
Good bump. You've put a lot of effort into this so I'll say which of your points I agree with and which ones I don't.
1) I don't really care about this phrase. I haven't heard that many people use this one tbh
2) The commentators don't usually call it deliberate
3) Yeah it's annoying when it happens, especially as I play cricket but I still think it should be allowed, keeps the game interesting, besides when the batsman is beaten and it lands in the keeper's gloves, byes are hardly ever run unless it's the end of the innings
4) Agree about soft signals, causes controversy, you've either caught something or not,
5) Agree about this flexibility thing, I think common sense needs to prevail sometimes, although sometimes it's for sponsorship reasons etc that they carry on with these breaks.
6) Elbow guards can protect you, IDC if it looks bad aesthetically, protecting yourself should be number 1 priority
7) Spinners bowling with sunglasses looks stupid and snobby, agree with you on this.
8) People can celebrate/not celebrate or bat with whatever equipment they want/don't want.
A good post by you though nevertheless.
