"This is a talented bunch with the potential to be number one across all formats": Mickey Arthur

Mickey Arthur appointed Director - Pakistan men’s cricket team

Rawalpindi, 20 April 2023:

The Pakistan Cricket Board today confirmed Mickey Arthur’s appointment as the Director of the Pakistan men’s cricket team. In this role, Arthur will be involved in designing, formulating and overseeing strategies behind the Pakistan men’s team.

The 54-year-old will also be a part of the coaching staff for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, away tour to Australia and home series against the West Indies. He will also be present with the side for Pakistan’s matches against India in the ACC Asia Cup.

During his time from 2016 to 2019, Arthur coached Pakistan to No.1 in Tests and T20Is, and also helped the side to win the ICC Champions Trophy 2017.

Najam Sethi, Chair of PCB Management Committee: “I am pleased that Mickey has formally rejoined the Pakistan men’s cricket team with an enhanced role in which he will be responsible for formulating and implementing strategies for the upcoming assignments across all formats. Furthermore, he will also be responsible for strengthening the national team culture, identifying and grooming future stars so that we can strengthen our bench-strength and strategically secure our future.

“Having lived and worked in Pakistan during his previous tenure, Mickey knows the current players, the structure and the system at the back of his hand. I am sure he will incorporate learnings from the previous tenure so that he can have an even more successful second term.”

Mickey Arthur: “I am absolutely thrilled to be rejoining the Pakistan cricket team and look forward to working with the group.

“Since moving on, I have kept a track of the players and their collective performances. This is a talented bunch with the potential to be number one across all formats and my endeavor is to put in place strategies and create an environment that can contribute in further enhancing their performances so that we can extract the best out of them.”

gets fired after 2019 world cup and a new coach is bought in, gets fired by the new pcb set up. A new coach gets bought in, and also gets fired by the new pcb chair man who than bring back arthur.

In a sane country, only one coach would had stayed till the 2023 world cup.

If he was going to become coach, maybe they should had not fired him?

Head of Cricket, Mickey Arthur, has agreed to become Director of the Pakistan men’s national team, secondary to his commitments at The Incora County Ground.

Last season, Arthur guided the Club to its collective best all-formats results since 1996, before signing a contract extension to remain with Derbyshire until the end of the 2025 summer. Around his Derbyshire commitments, he will work with the Pakistan international side during the English off-season, including the ICC World Cup in October and November, while also providing advice and strategic support to the Pakistan Cricket Board.

Derbyshire Chief Executive, Ryan Duckett, said: “Mickey was approached by the Pakistan Cricket Board over the Christmas period and he was always very open with the Club, contacting me immediately and committing to Derbyshire.

“A coach of Mickey’s calibre will naturally attract attention; however I am delighted by his continued dedication to his role, the group of players and Club as a whole.

“Derbyshire remains Mickey’s main focus, however he continues to be an ambitious coach and having our Head of Cricket lead Pakistan in the ICC World Cup, as well as in international series’, will be a great opportunity for our Club to be represented on the world stage.

“There is no doubt that in his first year with Derbyshire, he galvanised what was already a talented squad and backroom team, while he is now focused on further on-field improvements this summer and to challenge for silverware.”

Arthur added: “It’s no secret that I loved my first stint with Pakistan and I’m delighted to be working with the PCB again, but I want to reaffirm my commitment to Derbyshire. Our project is one I am determined to see through and I will be giving my all to ensure we remain on the right path.

“My role with Derbyshire allows me to undertake work and do coaching outside of the English season, and the opportunity to lead Pakistan in all formats means that I can help their national game, while also taking learnings back to the Club.

“I will be proud to take Derbyshire onto the wider stage and showcase the heights that playing for our Club can help players and coaches to reach. It remains my aim to be the county of choice.”

Misbah fired him even though he was categorically ‘not applying for the head coach role so it’s not a conflict of interest’ even though everyone was reporting it was going to be Misbah taking over…. Only for Misbah to then become coach.

Luckily justice has prevailed and Mickey has another chance.

Ok we can leave the Misbah stuff out of here.

Well that's a nice Eid present. Regardless of your thoughts of Mickey's 2016-19 tenure, the way his release was handled was appalling.

Hopefully the mafia stays out of his way and is given full rein to make any changes he sees fit.

So basically Mickey would be doing a lot of things that his highness chairman should be doing.

Should we not sack the chairman then?

"A first-of-its-kind coach/director of cricket picked to run Pakistan cricket remotely, whose loyalty is first with his county job than Pakistan cricket. This is as crazy as a clown in a village circus," Ramiz Raja told Cricbuzz.

What are Ramiz’s views on Hayden the mentor in Dubai and Australia but too scared to actually come to Pakistan?

Ramiz would know about a circus - that's exactly how to describe his reign as PCB Chairman where he was the head clown.

Doesn't mean he is any less correct about how ridiculous the role is, which is orchestrated by the current clown in charge.

Grant Bradburn is the head coach. Mickey is the team director who'll oversee the coaches and selection process akin to Rob Key's role. He isn't a "remote coach" so Ramiz is factually wrong.

Given the likelihood of another PCB overhaul after this year's GE and the fact the PCB's contracts aren't worth the paper they're printed on means I don't blame Mickey at all for insisting on a dual role so he's got something to fall back on.

Why would Mickey complain? He's been delivered a barrel of gold.

The job description even entails that Derbyshire will be his main focus until 2025.

The only people with clown paint on their face are sitting in the PCB.

Glad to see Mickey back . A big upgrade from misbah and Saqlain . He knows how to keep the fighting sprit and won’t give useless excuses like Saqlain .

I guess, it can only get better from this point?

In that sense, Mickey is already a success!

Get ready for:

"We're a proud team and we hate losing". :ma

--After every series and World Cup loss going forward. We're not going anywhere with Arthur running the things. It'll be the same like his previous stint: a total disaster.

We'll become even worse against the top sides. And continue to lose Tests even at home - this losing streak is a legacy of Arthur and he's back to claim it lol.

We have a very set team for ODIs with only a couple of spots up for grabs. I hope MA realizes he doesn't need to make any massive changes. Let Babar do his thing until the WC.

At this stage MA should just enjoy the ride and play the mentor role by supporting the team morally with positive words of encouragement.

Cricket affairs in Pakistan can't get any worst so has to get better . But its a good plan to put Micky in charge of cricket in Pakistan as Sethi is totally illiterate in cricket.

Rankings aside I wouldn’t say things can’t get worse.

The times of spot fixing, the akmals, drug bans, ball tampering were surely worse. Plus we didn’t have the world class players we have now like Babar, Shaheen, Rizwan. After inzaman and yusuf left we had no world class players until now.

All indications are nothing much will change in terms of team combinations etc

I guess he will provide the correct motivation for the side to do better.

It's not just about enjoying the ride.

He's on good money and has to improve the team especially in Test cricket.

We have World Cups coming up too where Pakistan need to challenge.

Hope Mickey realizes the enormity of the task that faces him now.

That's a lot of work to do, especially in the Test format.

Forget about Test cricket. Mickey failed last time in test cricket.

For limited overs, the biggest decision that needs to be made is regarding the captain, and for that he needs to be there in the dressing room.

Rizwan or either Shaheen needs to be considered

None of those two

Nothing will change with those 2.

Imad should be your leader. Full stop.

Pakistan needs to play more Test matches and if not tests than more Odi's (As Odi cricket requires some what similar skill set ). Pakistan is fast becoming a T20 only side though. Even when we are so close to the Odi World cup, we keep on scheduling and playing T20s.

Another side has gone down this path. The once all conquering Windies, once undisputed champions of both Tests and Odi cricket. Have now been reduced to a T20 specialist side. And due to the fickle nature of T20 cricket, the West Indies could not even qualify for the last T20 world cup.

If Mickey's team in County, Derbyshire, don't do anything good then his credentials will be questioned in both Pak and Derby camps.

Derbyshire lose by an innings and 7 runs - embarrassing for Mickey's team.

Derbyshire are currently bottom of Division 2 in the County Championship.

Terrible start for Mickey this season.

'The goal is to win the World Cup. The second one would be to go to Australia and win a Test series. I was lucky enough to experience that with South Africa, and there's nothing better. Those are two very achievable goals,' he was quoted saying.

Pakistan has already secured their spot in this year's World Cup, which is scheduled to be held in India. However, their participation is subject to the approval of the Pakistani government.

In light of India's decision to not visit Pakistan for the Asia Cup in 2023, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is also contemplating taking a strong stance. As a result, there is a possibility that Pakistan might play their World Cup matches in a country other than India.

Additionally, Mickey Arthur also expressed his admiration for the two young batsmen, Mohammad Haris and Saim Ayub.

'Mohammad Haris is a vibrant character, he's been great fun. I watched him bat, and he's unbelievable. Saim Ayub is an incredible talent. He's got it all. He can be that player for us that can dominate overs 10-40 at times,' he highlighted.

Can this work?

As much as I support Mickey, these bold statements are unnecessary. Winning the World Cup is achievable but even if the current Australian Test XI keeled over and died (God forbid) we'd still lose 3-0 in Australia.

Just drawing a Test would be an achievement.

Number in Tests that's the proper target.

And that should be the aim.

Why?, is this Javed Afridi’s uncle’s team?

We have enough people on the payroll, so no thank you.

Our test ranking will go down the drain when we get our usual spanking in Australia this year.

For me as a Pakistani fan, a test series win in Australia is bigger than winning 2 World Cups.

Unfortunately we will go to Australia unprepared again this year.

No way buddy - no one in Pakistan watches Tests anymore and will forget about a Test series in in Aus within a few days…

On the contrary - a WC win (that too in India..) will be milked for several generations
