Steve Smith is technically permitted to captain the Test team again once his Cricket Australia ban ends in March.
But whether he takes the armband from Tim Paine or not is a topic that’s dividing the country’s smartest and most experienced commentators.
Smith was banned from holding an official leadership role following the infamous Cape Town ball tampering saga that rocked Australian cricket 18 months ago.
Relative Test rookie Paine was thrust into the chair and has handled the job with aplomb, winning back the hearts and minds of cricket fans and restoring the image - at least in part - of the nation’s cricket team.

But with Smith now only five months away from having the captaincy ban lifted, some experts are calling for the world’s No.1 Test batsman to resume his role as skipper.
“I think Steve Smith should be captain when his (suspension) is up,” Test legend Mark Waugh said at the Fox Cricket launch on Thursday.
“I think he’s the logical choice from where I sit. He’s been captain before, he’s one player you know is going to be in the team, tactically I think he’s pretty smart.
“I don’t see too many other options to be honest.”
Paine has done such a good job over the past year-and-a-half that many pundits believe he should remain captain of the team until his time as a player is up.
Paine led Australia to an Ashes series draw in England only a couple of months ago, retaining the urn in a rare result on foreign soil for the Aussies.
Legendary spin bowler Shane Warne says the job should be Paine’s for as long as he wants to keep playing.
“I’m really happy with Tim Paine, I think everyone is,” Warne said on Thursday.
“We’ve all been pretty impressed with how Tim Paine has captained the side, he’s a very good leader of men, he’s good tactically.
“I hope Tim Paine captains for as long as he can, and if he makes runs he can captain for as long as he wants.”
Paine’s downfall in recent times has been his form with the bat.
While no one can put a serious knock on his work behind the stumps or as captain of the side, he averaged only 20.00 in the Ashes series with a high score of 58.
The Aussies have five Tests this home summer - against Pakistan and then New Zealand - and Paine will want to find some fort with the bat.
But is his spot in the side in jeopardy?
“He’s got to make some runs at No.7. If he’s making runs at seven it lengthens that order,” Warne said.
Waugh says Paine is in no danger of being dropped from the Test team this summer.
“I personally don’t think he is (in danger), I’d have him there for the summer,” Waugh said.
“But I guess in his favour is there’s not a lot of obvious replacements as captain if that was the way the selectors wanted to go.
“I thought he kept very well in England. He didn’t quite make the runs he would have liked to have made.
“I wouldn’t be too worried about changing Tim Paine’s position in the side, he’s going to be there for the summer as far as I’m concerned.”
With Paine’s lean form with the bat and Smith unable to captain the team until April, there appears to be a lack of leadership depth in the Australian side.
Fast bowler Pat Cummins has been floated as a potential captain, but has a tendency to miss matches while either rested or injured.
Matthew Wade captains Tasmania and is almost guaranteed to be picked in the first Test team for the Gabba match.
David Warner is a Test veteran but is banned from ever having a leadership role within the team, due to his own role in Cape Town.
