James Vince since his international debut in 2015 has played 13 Tests, 13 ODIs and 12 T20Is for his country. Now representing Multan Sultans for his second Pakistan Super League season after a useful stint at the Big Bash League where he hit 323 runs at a strike rate of 123.28 for Sydney Sixers, Vince is all set to play a key role for the PSL side as they look for their first title.

In an exclusive interview with PakPassion.net, Vince spoke about his experience of playing the PSL in Pakistan under the guidance of Head Coach Andy Flower, the feeling of being a part of England's World Cup winning squad, his aspirations to make a comeback for England in Tests and his views on the leadership of Joe Root and Eoin Morgan.

PakPassion.net: How would you describe the experience of playing for Multan Sultans at the PSL so far?

James Vince:
I played for Multan Sultan’s last year and was glad to be retained by them for the current edition of the tournament. In both stints, the experience of playing for the franchise has been an excellent one. It’s always good to see some familiar faces once again as I am doing this year, and the way Multan Sultans look after their players has also been superb and makes for a great experience.

PakPassion.net: How much have you enjoyed playing in Pakistan during this edition of the PSL?

James Vince:
It’s been a great experience playing PSL games in Pakistan. Obviously, we only played one game in Pakistan last year, but I am glad that we will be playing all our games in the country this year and it’s great to see the passion for the game which I find amazing. In England, cricket is second to football and not far behind Rugby but here in Pakistan, there are cricket fanatics everywhere. To be able to get an opportunity to play in front of such big crowds and passionate fans is simply amazing.

PakPassion.net: What’s it been like playing under the coaching of Any Flower for Multan Sultans?

James Vince:
Its Andy’s first stint as Head Coach at the PSL but I have had the pleasure of working with Andy before for the England Lions. He is very nice to play under, is a fantastic coach and has been very successful over his career. It’s great to have someone with his knowledge and experience with us at Multan Sultans.

PakPassion.net: Does playing in so many different Twenty20 Leagues hamper your Test batting abilities in any way?

James Vince:
I don’t feel playing in Twenty20 Leagues has any detrimental effect in a player’s ability to perform in other formats of the game. There really is no conflict between franchise-based tournaments and 4-Day or Test cricket as in my case, only when it’s not summer in England, are there opportunities to play cricket in Twenty Leagues around the world. My 4-day and red-ball cricket is therefore played in the English County season only. So, when I finish up from the PSL in Pakistan, I will still have time to go back and prepare properly for the start of the County season back home and get myself in the right frame of mind for the longer format of the game.

PakPassion.net: The target must be to make a comeback in Test cricket for England?

James Vince:
I haven’t played a Test for England since March 2018 although I did get into the England Test squad for the series against India in the summer but didn’t get a chance to play. In my career, there have been a few times when I have got to 50, 60 or to 83 when I got run out in Australia and I suppose things may well have turned out differently had I converted those runs to big scores, but that is now in the past. I have had chats with Selector Ed Smith over the last couple of years and it’s clear that my inclusion in the England team will only be through weight of runs. I guess if I do get another opportunity to play for England, it will be down to me to make some big hundreds and re-establish myself. Whether that opportunity comes or not is to be seen. I am 28-years-old and a still have a few years left in me but if I can do well for Hampshire in the County season and do get another opportunity to play for England, then it will be down to me to make some match-winning hundreds and see where that takes me.

PakPassion.net: Tell us about your experience of being part of the World Cup winning squad in 2019.

James Vince:
It was a special feeling to be part of that World Cup winning side. The final against New Zealand, as we all know, was incredible. Whilst I wasn’t part of the playing XI on that day, I was fielding during the super-over and to be part of that winning moment was amazing to say the least.

PakPassion.net: Do you believe that by doing well in the PSL, you could improve your chances of finding a place in the England T20 World Cup squad?

James Vince:
First of all, let me say that the standard of the PSL is fantastic. There is a lot of really good young talent coming through for Pakistan which is mixed with some excellent experienced overseas players. There is no doubt that the standard of competition is very high during PSL games so if you come here and perform well, it does show that you are doing well as a player. But one has to remember that the current England Twenty20 side is a tough side to get into. Especially as a batter, you will find it tough to make a case for yourself as the current batsmen in the England side have done an outstanding job and almost cemented their places in the team. However, having said that, I am sure that doing well in a high-standard competition like the PSL couldn’t do much harm to your chances of making it into this side.

PakPassion.net: Some say that the current England ODI side is one of the greatest in history.

James Vince:
I would say that a lot changed in the England ODI side after the disappointment of the 2015 World Cup. Eoin Morgan has played a massive role in changing the way England have gone about playing One-Day cricket. The terms “aggressive” and “positive” get thrown around a bit about this team but England have backed that up with action. They have consistently played that style of cricket for the past 4-5 years now, so they have definitely built one amazing side and have changed how One-Day cricket is played, which isn’t an easy thing to do in itself. Of course, Eoin Morgan can take a lot of credit for that, but the players have been backed and given opportunities and have in turn shown that they can do well regularly for this side.

PakPassion.net: Can England reach the same heights of success as their ODI side under Joe Root’s captaincy?

James Vince:
In my view, the Test side has been in a phase where I don’t think it got to nowhere near the point where the One-Day side was in 2015. There have been some really high-quality players in the past 5 years or so where you had players of the calibre of Alastair Cook and Andrew Strauss before him who were two world-class openers. Then you had the likes of Jonathan Trott, Kevin Pietersen and Ian Bell but since then there has been a bit of a transition with a few players like myself, who have been in and out of the line-up. So, I suppose the challenge now for England is to find a settled team that can do well in Test cricket and give those players consistent chances to do well. I do believe that Joe Root is an excellent Test captain and I am sure we will see more consistent results when the team is more settled. We are already starting to see some guys like Rory Burns at the top of the order who has shown that he is a very good Test opener. We also have Ollie Pope who is the best young County cricketer from what I have seen and he is one of a few cricketers who if given good chances and a long run in Tests under a leader like Joe Root can go on to make England one of the best sides in that format as well.

PakPassion.net: What are your thoughts about The Hundred which will make its debut this summer ?

James Vince:
We haven’t had a franchise competition in England yet, so this is very exciting. The Twenty20 competitions in England so far have been good but not every game is televised, and the publicity hasn’t been that great. Also, we have gone from 18 Counties in the Blast tournament to just 8 franchises in The Hundred which is very good. So, the best players from the Blast will now feature in a smaller pot of players where each team of 15 will have 3 overseas players mixed in with the best players in England. This should be an exciting time for English cricket, and it will be interesting to see how this slightly different format which is shorter in duration will fare. The fact is that everyone is excited on the back of what happened in the World Cup and hopefully this competition can attract new audiences and be one that would be great to watch as well.

He is a top notch player and has not yet played to his potential. I am sure a big innings is round the corner for James Vince. Just needs to be consistently backed.

His stint with Multan Sultans will definitely boost his confidence, only side with mediocre bowling attack, rest of the PSL teams have very strong bowling attacks which he is facing. Good luck for your future Vince.

His technique ,ability, and shot range aren't the issue. His problem is he has a mental lapse after a certain period of time and gives his wicket away.

At 28, it is very late to change that. I like watching him as a player . I hope he can have a good international career. But it is unlikely to materialise due to his mental lapses and the quality of the England team now.

I hope he makes a comeback in England test squad. He deserves to be their permanent number 3.

Vince plays some great looking shots, but he couldn't capitalize on starts in Tests.

He would need to score heavily in County cricket to get a recall.

A stylish and elegant batsman but he needs that first 100 in international cricket to kickstart his career.

Too many times he has got out when well-set and that isn't the sign of a top player.

James Vince is facing an uncertain England future after being being overlooked for the forthcoming Twenty20 matches against Pakistan, with national selector Ed Smith admitting the Hampshire batsman has failed to take his chances at the highest level.

Vince was overlooked for the Vitality T20 series at Emirates Old Trafford after a enduring a disappointing time against Ireland in the recent one-day international series and must now wonder where he stands in the reckoning little more than 12 months on from being part of England’s World Cup-winning squad.

England are continuing their policy of keeping the red and white-ball groups entirely separate in the current bio-secure landscape and Vince’s omission from a 14-man squad already missing the likes of Joe Root, Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler does not bode well.

Having played more than 10 times in each of the three formats, the 29-year-old averages 23.00 (ODIs), 24.90 (Tests) and 28.33 (T20s) – a record he may now struggle to improve on.

Smith, whose panel recalled the fit-again Dawid Malan to bolster the batting, said: “I think James is a very talented player and at his best we all know has the skill to look absolutely at home in international cricket.

“But I’m not saying anything different here than I said to James on the phone: it’s just a question of him grabbing his opportunities. He’s not been selected for this series against Pakistan. That was as far as the conversation went.

“One thing he’d be the first to say, and I think he has said it publicly, that for someone of his talent and his class he probably hasn’t grabbed his opportunities in the way he would have liked to have done.

“If they come around again I’m sure he’d be absolutely determined to really grab it.”

Malan will be hoping he can do just that too, fresh from a maiden first-class double century for new club Yorkshire against Derbyshire in the Bob Willis Trophy. He scored an unbeaten hundred against New Zealand in November only to be dropped again until the final match of the subsequent South Africa series.

He is one of three players named who did not appear against Ireland, alongside Somerset all-rounder Lewis Gregory and Chris Jordan.

1st T20I - August 28 (6pm)
2nd T20I - August 30 (2pm)
3rd T20I - September 1 (6pm)

The latter is England’s top-ranked seamer in the short format at number 10 in the world but has not played any cricket this summer due to a bicep injury which required surgery. Smith said medical assessments indicated he would be “fully available” for selection.

One option England have ruled out is drafting players who go unused in the third Test against Pakistan. Paceman Mark Wood would have been a potential beneficiary should he not earn a recall for the series decider, having played just one of the five Tests to date.

James Vincent in a message to PakPassion

"My pre flight Covid-19 test came back positive. No one in my family are showing symptoms and they have since been tested so am awaiting results of their tests. I'm currently waiting on another test. If all come back negative I'm hoping there is still a chance I can get to PSL but will need to get further advice to see if this is possible. We are all self isolating for the time being"

An individual has been shifted to an isolation room within the team hotel after his Covid-19 test returned positive.

He had returned home after the second round of the first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy on 3 November. As per the PCB Covid-19 Protocols, he should have traveled to Karachi only after receiving a negative result from the home test. However, upon arrival in Karachi, the PCB Medical and Sports Sciences received the positive result, following which he was quarantined immediately.

The individual will now stay in isolation until he returns two negative tests.

Meanwhile, Multan Sultans batsman James Vince has been ruled out of the HBL Pakistan Super League 2020 playoffs after he tested positive for Covid-19 in a pre-departure test conducted in England.

Multan Sultans may now choose a local or a foreign player as replacement.

The playoffs of the HBL Pakistan Super League 2020 will be played from 14-17 November.

A very classy, well organised batsman. I wish James Vince makes comeback to the English test squad. He still has some time to make that happen.

James Vince playing his part in a very dangerous partnership with his skipper Rizwan. Looks like he's arrived at PSL6

Vince brings up his 3rd PSL 50, in 39 balls. Playing a fantastic innings here for Multan

He is a delight to watch. It’s a shame he can’t perform at international level.

Amazing innings by Vince today - 100 and taking his side to a win now...

He's been in such delightful touch today, no lazy cover drives and edges to slip (thus far). Brilliant century.

Oozes talent.

Would walk into most teams and would be an absolute superstar in Pakistan.

Just goes to show the amount of talent and depth that England has.

But I thought you said PSL does not have good batsmen?

Good day for Vince in the Vitality Blast yesterday. Played 2 games, scoring 63 and 102 opening for Hampshire

Hampshire captain James Vince has hit a brisk 65 off 41 balls today for his team in the T20 Vitality Blast.

Could be worth an England recall in the shorter format?

James Vince became the leading run-scorer in T20 Blast history but his 88 not out was not enough for Hampshire as they lost to Surrey at the Ageas Bowl.

The 32-year-old became the second player to score 5,000 runs in the competition and, shortly afterwards, he passed Luke Wright's tally of 5,026.

But Vince had to share the limelight with Surrey's match-winner Will Jacks.

The opener smashed eight sixes in his unbeaten 83 as Surrey reached their target of 157 to win by six wickets.

The match was in the balance with Surrey requiring 56 from the final 36 balls, but England all-rounder Jacks seized the initiative for his side with three successive sixes in a pivotal 15th over bowled by Mason Crane.

Ably supported by Jamie Smith (30 not out) in an unbroken fifth-wicket stand of 64, Jacks guided the visitors home with seven balls to spare to secure a third win in four games in this season's T20 Blast.

Defending champions Hampshire, meanwhile, have lost two of their first three group games.

Captain Vince matched his knock of 88 not out in Hampshire's previous fixture against Middlesex, accelerating to good effect midway through the innings and sharing 83 for the second wicket with Tom Prest (33).

Hampshire appeared well set to post a larger total when they were 128-2 at the end of the 16th over, but Surrey restricted the hosts to only two boundaries in the final four overs as they ended on 156-4.

Vince's 5,054 T20 Blast runs have come in 163 innings at an average of 35.34, with 35 half-centuries and four hundreds. He now tops the list of run-scorers in the competition's history after surpassing Wright.

Kent's Joe Denly (4,773), Lancashire's Steven Croft (4,553) and Alex Hales of Notts (4,489) follow closely behind to complete the top five.

Hampshire captain Vince appeals to public after shocking home attacks

England cricketer Vince, 33, lives in a village east of Southampton and has been there for eight years with no trouble.

However, this year, Vince and his family have been the victims of two attacks on their property which have seen his home and vehicles vandalised.

Vince has described waking up to the sound of glass smashing and alarms blaring, while CCTV footage shows the perpetrator throwing objects through his windows.

The first attack happened in the second week of April and another just under a month later, a week after Vince and his family had returned following repairs.

In an interview with The Telegraph, Vince said: "All the experts we’ve spoken to say it looks like a money issue, unpaid debts or something.

“We have nothing to hide and know we have never been involved in anything like this. We just desperately want this to stop.

“If anyone knows anything, or sees anything in the footage of the attack that could lead to anything, please contact us or the Hampshire police.

"It could be the final piece of information we need to find out what is going on and get our lives back to normal."

England batter James Vince quits first-class cricket to play Pakistan Super League

England batter James Vince has opted to quit first-class cricket and play for Karachi Kings in the upcoming Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2025 after being picked in the draft. Vince's latest move comes after the England Cricket Board (ECB) did not grant NOC for English cricketers to participate in the PSL.

The England board decided not to issue NOCs (No Objection Certificates) to all-format players for participation in the PSL in November 2024, as the league overlaps with the early rounds of the County Championship in April-May this season.

James Vince, a veteran of 13 Tests, was anticipated to lead Hampshire this season. However, he was retained by the Kings ahead of the PSL draft. "I love Hampshire. It's been my club and home for 16 years, so I want to be able to maintain my best to keep delivering for Hampshire in T20 cricket, and hopefully even further our success in the competition [the Blast]," Vince said in a statement.

"I also need to understand what is best for my family, and combine that with the stage of my career I am at," he added. The 33-year-old, who has captained Hampshire since 2015, is currently playing for the Gulf Giants in the ILT20 tournament in the UAE.

Hampshire's director of cricket, Giles White, expressed respect for Vince's decision.

"James has been at the heart of the Club for the best part of 20 years, showing absolute commitment on and off the field as the team's leading batter and captain. We recognise that this announcement will be tinged with disappointment for many fans but hope everyone will join us in celebrating what he has given to our Club over many years and supporting him as he fulfils his commitment to continue leading the Hawks in the 2025 Vitality Blast," White said.

Vince, with 216 first-class matches under his belt, has accumulated 13,340 runs at an average of 40, including 30 centuries.

James Vince had a brilliant start to his PSL X campaign. Scored a half-century in his first match already against Multan Sultans in the third match of the tournament. Playing at 54*(24) so far.

Great knock from Vince today against Multan Sultan in PSL 10.
