Top 10 singers from India and Pakistan

bhimsen joshi aint famous..coz he sucks lol

LOL Says a guy who has Hetfield as his DP. If Hetfield could be as half as good as Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, then probably he'd not resort to so many aahs and oohs in during the intertwined harmonizations in a song.... Heck forget Bhimsen Joshi, if Hetfield were even half as good as Mustaine or Dickinson , he'd have been bloody awesome ...

It's not just an Indian culture specific thing, though. Commercial/ Popular music tends to dominate traditional/ classical music in terms of reach. Look at the Western tradition.

Yes i am mostly speaking for the non south indian belt with my generalization of course.

I guess the reason movie music never got big in Pak is because the movie industry never got a chance to flourish thanks to bollywood.

I personally don't like female singers with the high pitched adolescent type voice...like asha+lata. Sorry folks.

Do you think that they, in some ways, mis-represent females or, at least, mis-represent a facet of womanhood as they add something abnormal or unachievable to the Utopian idea of perfect woman?

I mean, nobody ever meets a woman who talks like a cuckoo but people keep listening to songs where the female singer sings that way, leading to some kind of aberration in the idea of what is supposed to be a good voice.

Who so special about Lata and Asha??--both are so overrated in Pakistan and India. Especially Asha, her voice (and attitude) is just awful.

I can't name all ten but few... I am a Southi so usually bias exists... only for playback/folk/ghazal singing...not classical music... without any particular order...

according to me,from India;
mohammad rafi
kishore kumar
kJ Yesudas
sonu nigam
chitra
shreya goshal.

From pakistan;
rahat fateh ali khan
atif aslam.

You can't compare singers of different styles. For mastery of different styles, bollywood singers would take the crown but if you want to make a list of specialist then not many bollywood singers would cut the cake.

I would like to throw in Abida Parveen into the mix. Up there with NFAK in getting the crowd going.

Kishore Kumar/ Mohd Rafi.. cant rate who is better
Kumar Sanu
Shreya Ghoshal
Manna Dey
Hemant Kumar
Bappi Lahiri
Abhijeet

from Pakistan
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan
Rahat Ali
hate atif aslam

I think currently Ustad Rashid Khan is best singer of the world. He is in a class where NO other singer in today's world can even match the dust of his shoes.

Sonu Nigam is the best singer in the sub continent.

Not even. He's an excellant singer, but won't
call him the best. His voice turns in to a shrill at high notes.

Although if someone has gone through his renditions of Rafi's songs, you can't help but admire his versatility.

Lata and Mohammad Rafi are great singers but Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is the Sultan.

Rest (eastern or western) can't be compared to this man

Imran Khan, Amitabh Bachan, Mick Jagger and Nusrat

Styles/techniques of opera singers are different from those of blues/rock singers which are again different from Indian/Pakistani singers. You can hardly compare.

Most of the lists here would make sense only if you were limiting the discussion to Hindi/Urdu language music.

You are doing a huge disrespect to singers who managed to make their mark even outside the comfort song of their native languages, while being the absolute best in theirs.

People like Yesudas, SPB , K.S Chitra and Lata and Asha to a smaller extend have managed that .

Among the present generation nobody holds a candle to Shreya Ghosal in that regard. She has won national awards singing in Bengali, Hindi and Marathi and has won numerous accolades singing in Tamil and Malayalam, two totally unrelated languages from Hindustani music belonging to a completely different language family. These two languages are traditionally considered the toughest to learn/sing in by northern singers and very few have made decent attempts.

She has songs in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Marathi, Gujarati, Bengali, Assamese, Nepali, Oriya, Bhojpuri, Punjabi, Urdu and Tulu ! Imagine the skill required to simply get the enunciation right in such diverse languages, let alone the ragaas and swars. Shreya Nails it in almost all of the languages, she's a freak talent.

I can't stand Atif Aslam

My list of top 10 of all time from both countries is

1) Rafi/Kishore
2) Kishore/Rafi
3) Nusrat
4) Asha Bhosle
5) Lata
6) Mehdi Hasan
7) Mukesh
8) Sonu Nigam
9) Rahat
10) Sajjad Ali
