Toronto Mosque Threatened With ‘Christchurch Like Massacre’; Shut-Down Indefinitely

A Toronto mosque was closed indefinitely after receiving threats of a massacre just like Christchurch (New-Zealand), as the Canadian police investigate the matter.

“The threats specifically contained a promise that guns had been procured to ‘do a Christchurch all over again,” the National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) tweeted Saturday, referencing the attack on two mosques in New Zealand in 2019 that killed 51 Muslims. Police were notified of the threats received last weekend.

Mustafa Farooq, chief executive officer of the NCCM, said the mosque will not be named because of the fear it would unleash more threats.

“These (email) messages were extraordinarily violent,” he said. “When we get these threats, we don’t take them lightly. And that’s why the mosque was shut down and remains shut down.”

Toronto Mayor John Tory called the threats “completely unacceptable” and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he was “deeply disturbed” by the incident.

The threats come on the heels of the stabbing death of a volunteer mosque caretaker in the Toronto area in September.

That crime prompted 25 human rights groups to send a letter Oct. 5 to Trudeau asking for an action plan to shut down white supremacist groups “so that we don’t continue to keep having to go to funeral after funeral, to respond to threats after threats,” said Farooq.

“It needs to stop and the way that needs to stop is through a national action plan to dismantle these kinds of white supremacist, neo-Nazi, violent, Islamophobic or xenophobic groups.”

“Obviously, there’s a lot of fear,” Farooq said. “There is a lot of concern. What is going to happen next?”

But Farooq said the Muslim community would not be cowed by threats.

“I won’t allow someone who was trying to terrorize us and intimidate us succeed,” he said. “We’re going to stand up as Canadians. We’re going to stand up (as) Canadian Muslims. And I know that so many communities are standing with us.”

It was not known when the mosque would reopen.

Most of these will be empty threats. But there will always be "You never know" situations. Even in Youtube, you will see lot of people giving death threats. Most will be keyboard warriors. But you never know.

The difference being, this is an actual threat to a real place, not just people talking rubbish on YouTube. Precautions should be taken here.

Extra patrolling in that area could be a short term solution. On the long run people need to see how these terrorists are getting radicalized? The anti-Muslim rhetoric being used by even mainstream politicians could be what is fuelling these extremist to attack.

Easy votes. Throughout history politicians tend to pick a group of people to demonize and magnify every vice in that group to make it seems like all that is wrong is because of that one group. Used to be Jews before, now it’s Muslims.

Yeah but Liberals in these countries are doing a stellar job , NZ and Canada have proved why they will always be better than Religious nations.

Muslims in these countries are still safer than most Muslims nations.

Muslims themselves need to protect their own mosques, you cant rely on the police all the time.

In the UK, when mosques here were threatned they were protected by Muslims.

By law you are allowed to defend yourself physically if need be. Right wing extremists and Islamaphobes arent the toughest bunch, a good hiding usually sets them on their way back to their rat hole.

Good way to get all mosques in Canada shut down to be honest, if a threatening email is all it takes. I am sure extreme white neo-Nazi parties will be watching this with interest.
