Train accidents and Rail safety in Pakistan

Well the crooks are in jail even after the best efforts of LHC and IHC, would they be if IK was not in power, no chance.
Sh Rashid has been Minster for 3 of the last 30 years, and you put all the blame on him? Interesting but NS has been PM 3 times nearly doing a decade but he couldn't build a single hospital that he could use, instead according to you paying money to the UK government which kills Muslims. So when you are a mental midget you don't think things through.
If people are determined enough to do things they will do them, and if the railway staff were not enforcing the rules then serious questions have to be asked, then blames need to be apportioned.

Btw I quoted back to you the word corruption and you ran. It was your word, why did you run. Does corruption lead to deaths or not?

I used the wording of PTI supporters who call this regime honest and competent. If you want my personal opinion you know it already.

Corruption should be minimized but incompetence will always be a bigger stumbling block. A competent but corrupt government is better than an incompetent but honest government.

The worst combination is PTI - incompetent, dishonest and corrupt liars.

“In South Korea, the PM resigns when a ship breaks. He is not responsible, but he says that since the ship broke in his regime, how can I stay in power?”

- Imran Khan, when Nawaz was PM.

So Imran Khan, when are you handing your resignation?

So let's go back to your statement on corruption. Why are you running from your statement?

Awful news.

Condolences to those who have lost loved ones.

MULTAN: As mourning relatives buried some of the 73 people who were killed in the massive train fire near Rahim Yar Khan, officials said on Friday that forensic experts would carry out DNA tests to identify most of the victims.

Ironically, but mercifully without causing any casualties, a similar incident happened on Friday in which one carriage of Sukkur Express caught fire, reportedly because of short-circuit.

The DNA tests are requi*red to identify as many as 52 charred bodies before they can be handed over to relatives for burial, said Jamil Ahmed, the deputy commissioner of Rahim Yar Khan.

The tragedy on Thursday left three coaches of the Rawalpind-boundi Tezgam Express destroyed.

Survivors said it took nearly 20 minutes for the train to stop, amid contradictory reports about whether the train’s brakes and the safety cords were working or not.

Many of the victims were members of Tableeghi Jamaat travelling to Lahore for their annual congregation.

The train was carrying 857 passengers, including 550 members of the preaching group. The fire apparently started in two compartments where Tableeghi Jamaat members were riding in.

In Sindh, where most of the victims were from, authorities handed over several identified bodies to relatives for burial on Friday in the town of Mirpurkhas and elsewhere. Other relatives were seen lining up to give blood samples for DNA tests outside the hospital in Rahim Yar Khan.

The deputy commissioner said the forensic teams hope to complete the identification process within 48 hours. He added that authorities were investigating the incident, including why it took the train so long to stop.

Train driver Sadiue Ahmed Khan insisted the emergency brakes were not malfunctioning and that the train stopped within three minutes of the first signs of fire. “This is the worst tragedy in my life as a driver,” he said.

In Islamabad, Railways Minister Sheikh Rashid told reporters that Pakistan Railways had announced compensation of Rs1.5 million each for those died. Besides, he added, the families of the dead would also be given Rs500,000 each on behalf of the prime minister.

Railways Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed said measures would be taken not to allow anyone onboard with cooking stoves or gas cylinders in the future.

“We admit our mistake and I assure you, next time it will not happen,” he said.

In Mirpurkhas, sobbing family members crowded a government building overnight as the first bodies covered in white cloth began arriving by ambulance from the scene of the disaster.

After Fajr prayers, with women watching from nearby rooftops, more than a hundred men attended the first funeral — of a car mechanic named Mohammad Saleem, who was in his late 40s.

It was held at the Bismillah Mosque, from which at least 42 members of Tableeghi Jamaat had left to board the train one day earlier.

According to officials, as some of the passengers cooked breakfast around dawn on Thursday two of their gas cylinders exploded, sending flames racing through three coaches as the train passed near Rahim Yar Khan.

Rescue officials found bodies and some injured passengers along a two-kilometre stretch of track.

Journalists were allowed inside the interior of the coaches early on Friday. The fire appeared to have burned them entirely, with virtually no space visible that was not blackened and charred.

One of them — Wagon No 12 — was carrying mainly people from Mirpurkhas, said the town’s deputy commissioner, Attaullah Shah.

“There was never such a tragic incident to happen to Mirpurkhas,” he said.

Mirpurkhas commissioner Abdul Waheed Sheikh said ten of the bodies had been confirmed as being residents of the town so far.

Twenty-four Mirpurkhas residents were among the injured.

But at least another 45 are still missing, he said.

Mr Shah said the government was arranging to send families of the missing from Mirpurkhas to the hospital in Rahim Yar Khan where the bodies have been taken.

Mirpurkhas was largely shut down on Friday as businesses closed in mourning.

“These were such people that we can not ever forget them,” Mohammad Anwar, the 57-year-old headmaster of a government school, said at the Bismillah Mosque.

He said that among the missing was his nephew, as well as the mosque’s imam. Most of those who left from the mosque had known one another or lived nearby.

Mahmood Iqbal wept outside his home as he said how his two sons were missing, one son-in-law was killed, and one brother-in-law was wounded.

When he looks at his grandsons, he said, he “can’t hold my tears”.

“I am praying to Allah, that they might come back from nowhere. I am waiting for a miracle,” he said.

Sabir Hussain Kaimkhani, a member of the National Assembly’s railways committee, said the accident rate had increased “due to negligence”.

He said that alarm systems and emergency brakes in many trains were missing or broken, and that passenger carriages did not carry fire extinguishers.

Rahmatullah Soomro from Shikarpur adds: A fire broke out in one bogie of Sukkur Express near Lodra Railway Station on Friday due to short circuit. The incident occurred when the train, coming from Karachi, was near 16 Morries Lodra.

The train came to a halt after passengers, who noticed the fire, pulled the emergency chain.

As soon as the train stopped, the area residents rushed to it and started efforts to bring the fire under control on a self-help basis.

No casualty was reported.

The fire brigade of the Shikarpur Municipal Committee also reached the spot and put out the blaze.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan offered his condolences to families of the victims who were killed in the devastating Tezgam fire and wished a "speedy recovery to the wounded survivors".

"On behalf of my country, I extend my deepest condolences to the people of Pakistan — our friends and brothers," he said in a video message, posted from the Turkish president's official account on Friday.

Erdogan mentioned 65 victims, as was earlier reported; the number of deceased, however, went up to 73 by late Thursday.

About 73 people perished in the Liaqatpur city of Rahim Yar Khan district when three carriages of a Tezgam train caught fire on Thursday. According to initial reports, the fire was caused by a cylinder blast that occurred when passengers were preparing breakfast for themselves in a moving train.

Condolence messages were also sent by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, UK Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab, United States' Acting Assistant Secretary of State Alice G. Wells, the Chinese embassy in Pakistan and former British high commissioner to Pakistan Thomas Drew, among others.

"Having just returned from visiting Pakistan, we were horrified and deeply saddened to hear about the tragic fire on the Tezgam train near Rahim Yar Khan," a statement posted by Kensington Palace on behalf of Prince William and Duchess Kate Middleton said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with all the people and families affected by this heart-breaking disaster."

Raab wrote to Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi "to express condolences on behalf of the UK" over the "tragic Tezgam train fire", the British foreign office said in a tweet.

"Our thoughts go out to all those affected and their friends and families," the tweet added.

Wells also extended her "deepest condolences" to families of victims of the "heartbreaking train accident".

A statement posted by the US State Department's Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs' Twitter account said: "Terrible news out of Rahim Yar Khan about the heartbreaking train accident today. I send my deepest condolences to the families of the passengers and the people of #Pakistan. AGW."

The Chinese embassy in Pakistan said it was "saddened by the tragic accident" and extended "heartfelt condolences and sympathies" to the families of the victims.

"The Embassy is saddened by the tragic accident of the Karachi-Rawalpindi Tezgam Express fire that caused losses of lives in Liaqatpur near Rahim Yar Khan earlier today. Our heartfelt condolences and sympathies go to the bereaved families and we wish the injured a speedy recovery."

Sharing a news story of the incident, Thomas Drew said: "Horrific news. My thoughts are with the victims, their families and friends."

LAHORE/RAHIM YAR KHAN: An initial investigation conducted by a Pakistan Railways’ team claims that the main reason behind Thursday’s Tezgam inferno was the gas leak and subsequent explosion of two cylinders and there was no evidence short-circuit, as claimed by some witnesses.

“It has been established that the fire erupted just after some passengers started preparing breakfast in the economy coach,” PR’s Chief Executive Officer Aijaz Ahmad Buriro told Dawn on Friday.

According to Mr Buriro, the Federal Government Inspector of railways (FGIR) has been asked to conduct both preliminary and detailed inquiries. “The FGIR will submit his preliminary inquiry report to the top rail authorities on Saturday (today) and a detailed inquiry report by Nov 20,” he added.

He said the PR administration would take action against officials concerned for their alleged negligence in the light of the findings of the detailed inquiry.

On the other hand, a senior civil defence official who has fire investigation expertise does not buy the PR version. He says gas cylinders are reduced into pieces after explosion. “In Tezgam case the two cylinders are largely intact with some small cuts and dents.”

Civil defence official says fire pattern suggests it was a short circuit

He said the pattern of fire eruption and its sudden spread to other coaches, as described by some survivors, suggest that its was a short-circuit.

“Electric system short-circuit travels very quickly. Had it been cylinders blast, fire would have been limited to one coach,” he added.

OPERATION: The railways operations across the country have been worsening fast for the last one year or so, claiming several lives in almost 100 major and small accidents. None of the senior officials was held guilty and penalised for negligence.

According to Haji Aleemullah, a Tableeghi Jamaat member who is attending the on-going congregation in Raiwind, said all those attending this annual gathering and those who travel across the country for preaching, are given instructions in writing. “As per instructions, they carry empty cylinders. We have learnt that before boarding Tezgam, the Jamaat team did show empty cylinders to the local rail authorities,” he said.

A senior PR official has sought judicial probe into the fire if the government really wants to reach the facts. “Since ordering an inquiry by the FGIR is sort of a departmental practice, it may save the guilty officials over the controversy of short circuit and cylinders blast. The government should better announce a tribunal for conducting a judicial inquiry into the incident as done to probe into Sangi trains accident and other serious incidents,” the official, who requested anonymity, demanded.

Another PR official, who also preferred anonymity said: “Whether it was due to short-circuit or cylinders blast, the fault lies with Pakistan Railways under the law,”

Meanwhile the relatives and heirs of the deceased of Tezgam inferno faced difficulties in receiving bodies (identified so far) at the Sheikh Zayed Medical Hospital in Rahim Yar Khan on Friday.

Reaching RY Khan from Hyderabad, Mirpur Khas and Umarkot, they told media that there were no arrangements from the hospital and the PR authorities to guide them.

“The hospital administration has told us that DNA tests of the dead and their immediate relatives would be conducted in Lahore. But when we approached the RYK railway station officials, they refused to facilitate us by issuing free tickets for Lahore,” Amjad, a relative of a deceased, said.

“Similarly, the district administration too remained indifferent as it didn’t arrange coffins for the bodies. Finally, the local Anjuman Tajran did the needful,” he deplored.

According to hospital focal person Rana Ilyas Ahmed, 62 bodies were brought here and only five were identified which were handed over to their heirs. “Though they faced difficulties, we have managed to bring a forensic team from Lahore here for collecting samples for conducting DNA tests,” he said

PR CEO Mr Buriro dispelled the impression, stating that the PR officials were facilitating passengers at various railway stations. Answering a question, he said there was no need for a judicial probe into the fire.

'You should have resigned after train tragedy,' CJP tells Sheikh Rashid

The Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered Federal Minister for Railways Sheikh Rashid to submit in court a business plan to uplift Pakistan Railways from it current condition, giving the minister two weeks time to do so.

While hearing a case pertaining to losses incurred by the national organisation, a three-member bench comprising Chief Justice of Pakistan Gulzar Ahmed, Justice Ijaz-ul-Ahsan and Justice Sajjad Ali Shah expressed displeasure with the railways minister over his running of the organisation.

The chief justice asked the railways minister to inform the court about an October 2019 fire that had engulfed a train, killing 73 passengers when apparently a gas cylinder brought by one of the travellers had exploded.

"You should have submitted your resignation," said the top judge, in response to which Rashid said that 75 people had been dismissed after the tragic incident.

"Yesterday we were told that two people were fired. You fired lower-level employees, when will the higher-ranking ones be [dismissed]?" asked Justice Ahmed.

"We will also remove higher-level employees," said Rashid in response.

"We do not see this happening, you are the highest-ranking employee," remarked the chief justice, adding: "Minister Sahib don't show people dreams, today you are running an 18th century railways. There is plundering in the railways department."

In response, the federal minister said he had been working 18 hours a day and had increased railways' passengers by seven million.

"Even in 2020, your entire system is being run on parchis (favours)," the chief justice remarked.

A day earlier, the apex court had observed that no department in the country was more corrupt than Pakistan Railways and summoned Rashid, the railways secretary and its chief operating officer to answer the court's questions today.

During today's proceedings, the chief justice said: "Yes, Mr Sahib [Rashid], tell us what you are doing. Your whole story is in front of us. The railways will not function under your administration."

Additionally, the court said ideally revenue from railways should take the ministry out of debt and make it profitable. The three-judge bench asked Rashid to present a business plan in the next hearing, adding that if there was any deviation from the plan presented in court, action will be taken.

The court also ordered that the six-kilometre portion of the Karachi Circular Railway (KCR) be completed in two weeks and instructed the Sindh government to provide all assistance on the project.

Adjourning proceedings till February 12, the court summoned the minister and the secretary of planning in the next hearing.

Speaking to reporters outside the court, Rashid said he will take the railways forward as per the instructions of the chief justice.

Rashid also clarified that the audit report referred to in the Supreme Court earlier was an audit report from 2013-17, adding that their report has not yet been released.

"When our audit report is released, then we are answerable. This is the audit report of the previous government," he said.

At least 20 people were dead and over 100 sustained injuries when 10 bogies of Hazara Express traveling from Karachi to Rawalpindi derailed near Nawab Shah, ARY News reported, quoting PTV.

Railway officials reported that the tragic incident occurred near Saharai Railway Station, located between Shahzadpur and Nawabshah when the Hazara Express was en route from Karachi.

The derailment resulted in 10 bogies veering off the tracks, leading to chaos and injuries among the passengers on board.

However, the traffic on the up track has been suspended.

The injured and bodies are being transferred to People’s Medical Hospital in Nawabshah.

DC Nawabshah, Shehryar Gul Memon said an emergency has been declared in nearby hospitals while the rescue operation is also underway. He further said ambulances and the rescue staff have been sent to the spot to gear up for relief operation.

The cause of the derailment is not yet known as officials reached the scene to probe the incident.

Meanwhile, on the directions of DG Rangers Sindh, Major General Azhar Waqas, paramilitary forces have left for the spot to assist the civil administration in the rescue and relief operation.

Addressing a press conference, Minister for Railways, Khawaja Saad Rafique said as per initial reports, the train was moving at a normal speed.

He said the ‘sabotage’ and ‘mechanical fault’ cannot be ruled out in the major train accident.

Railways Minister Khawaja Saad Rafique on Sunday hinted at the possibility of “sabotage” after dozens of people were killed when eight coaches of the Hazara Express train en route from Karachi to Rawalpindi derailed near the Sarhari Railway Station in Nawabshah district.

Around 10 cars of the passenger train were derailed. As a result of the accident, train services to the interior districts of Sindh had been suspended and rescuers were dispatched to the area.

"This is quite a big accident," Saad told reporters. "There can be two reasons: first that it was a mechanical fault, or the fault was created -- it might be a sabotage. We will investigate it."

A terrible tragedy in a long list of tragedies on the railways. The good news is that SS has taken notice

Khyber Mail narrowly escapes accident

A potentially disastrous incident was averted on Saturday as the Khyber Mail Express train managed to escape an accident during its journey from Lahore to Karachi.

The incident occurred when the train, approaching Sahiwal, started emitting smoke from one of its bogies, causing immediate concern among the passengers and railway officials on board.

Swift action was taken as authorities quickly identified that the wheels of the affected bogie were jammed.

Sources said that realising the seriousness of the situation, the decision was made to separate the troubled bogie from the rest of the train, ensuring the safety of the passengers and preventing any further damage.

If the train had continued on its journey without addressing the issue, there was a significant risk of a fire breaking out or the bogies derailing, posing a serious threat to the lives of those on board, the sources said.

Passengers suffer as upcountry fog disrupts PR operations

KARACHI: Trains arriving in Karachi from Punjab, specifically Lahore and Rawalpindi, are delayed due to smog, which has put a load on train operations even where there is no issue of poor visibility.

Passengers had to wait at the Cantonment Railway Station on Wednesday before boarding their respective trains due to this issue.

According to Railways’ officials, they are trying their best to facilitate the passengers by hurrying up things after the trains reach Karachi from upcountry.

“All trains are sent to the washing line after arrival, which also takes time while adding to the delay, but we have found a way to lessen this time,” a spokesperson for Pakistan Railways told Dawn.

The spokesperson explained that they are switching train names. “For instance, Sukkur Express reached here last evening and after getting it cleaned and ready, we changed it into Karachi Express so that Karachi Express’s passengers don’t have to wait too long.

“Meanwhile, when Karachi Express arrived and it was time for Sukkur Express to depart, we had the former train cleaned, ready and renamed as Sukkur Express for the latter’s passengers to board. Like this we are able to cut the washing and cleaning time at least, which usually takes two hours,” the spokesperson said.

“Still, delays due to the smog are ongoing. There is not much else there that we can do about the situation until the weather changes in Punjab,” the spokesperson added.

That is the reason why i usually avoid travelling by train specially in winters

condition of the tracks is very poor after the floods and on top of that signals are also malfunctioning so better to avoid this suicide attempt

Following the increase in petroleum products prices, Pakistan Railways also jacked up fares of passenger and freight trains by two percent.

According to a notification, the increase in the fares would be in effect from February 17. “The new fares would apply on all classes of passenger and freight trains,” the notification read.

Meanwhile, the Punjab Transport and Mass Transit Department notified Rs5 increase in Orange Line fares with immediate effect. The fares are increased after the hike in petroleum products prices on February 15.

According to the notification, the minimum fare has been raised from Rs20 to Rs25, while the maximum fare stood at Rs45 from Rs40.

Similarly, Multan Metrobus System’s one side fare has also been raised from Rs20 to Rs25.

Earlier on Thursday, the caretaker government approved a hike in the price of petrol by Rs2.73 per litre for the next fortnight, on the recommendation of the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA).

According to a notification by the finance ministry, the price of petrol increased by Rs 2.73 per litre and High-Speed Diesel by Rs 8.37 per litre.

Rail traffic disrupted as goods train derails in Rahim Yar Khan

Rail traffic came to a standstill after 6pm on both up and down tracks on Tuesday when some wagons of a down goods train derailed between Dera Nawab Sahib and Kulab railway stations on Tuesday evening in Rahim Yar Khan.

According to Pakistan Railways Samasata Head Train Examiner (HTE) Muhammad Shahid, the Karachi-bound down goods train - Yousufwala 9041 - traveling from Kulab railway station to Dera Nawab Sahib railway station, derailed while crossing over from single line working to the down line.

The derailment occurred when a wagon separated during the crossover. As a result, five different up and down trains were halted at various railway stations since rail traffic was suspended on both main tracks. The 27-Up Shalimar Express was stopped at Khanpur railway station, 11-Up Hazara Express at Rahim Yar Khan, 13-Up Awap Express at Sadiqabad, and 38-Down Fareed Express were halted at Dera Nawab Sahib railway stations.

Pakistan Railways Multan division Carriage Wagon Inspector Mahar Shauket informed Dawn that relief activities to remove the goods train from the main railway track have commenced. A rescue train was reported to start restoration work soon. The first priority is to clear the main track and depart all passenger trains to their destinations as quickly as possible, he added.

Quetta-bound cargo train derails near Taftan

A Quetta-bound cargo train derailed on Saturday near Tozgi station, around 70km from Taftan town on the Pak-Iran border, suspending rail operations between the two countries.

The goods train, with some passenger coaches attached, was loaded with phosphate and travelling from Iran towards its destination in Pakistan, Pakistan Railways (PR) CEO Amir Ali Baloch told Dawn.

The harrowing derailment significantly damaged the locomotive, a staff rest coach and a few wagons. Authorities fear that this was a terrorist attack, with the PR CEO saying that the possibility “cannot be ruled out”.

Mr Baloch said the incident was being probed in view of the killings in Noshki, where gunmen shot and killed nine men on Friday night after abducting them from a bus. Besides, militants also damaged a portion of a track near Noshki a day ago, he said.

He said an inquiry had been ordered to assess the causes of derailment. To a question, he said the train was slightly speeding when it was derailed.

He said the damaged track where the derailment occurred would be repaired as soon as PR workers access the area, which was currently cordoned off.

The Taftan derailment was one of at least three major accidents that occurred over the past week, a busy period for the organisation as it runs special trains to transport people travelling to celebrate Eidul Fitr with their families.

In an accident last week, the Peshawar-bound Rehman Baba Express collided with a dumper truck near Faisalabad during the late hours of Sunday, according to reports.

The truck, crossing the railway line at an unmanned level crossing at the Pakka Anna-Gojra section, was cut into halves due to the intensity of the crash.

The engine driver and his assistant received serious injuries, while the locomotive and a passenger coach also suffered massive damage. The rescue teams had to cut through the locomotive’s body to take out the driver and his assistant.

The accident suspended rail traffic on the Khanewal-Faisalabad section for hours, delaying trains’ arrival at the Faisalabad station.

The third accident took place on Friday when a coach of the Karachi-bound Allama Iqbal Express caught fire near Sargodha. According to reports, the train was crossing Sahiwal Junction when a Railway Police head constable spotted fire underneath carriage No. 6.

Eyewitnesses said that after spotting the fire, Muhammad Amin Sindhu rushed to the assistant station master’s office, who forcefully stopped the train by raising a red signal within the outer signal range.

Some passengers had jumped off the moving train at Sahiwal station before it was stopped, eyewitnesses said.

Later, the PR police safely disembarked the passengers and put out the fire. The damaged carriage was taken to the yard, and the train left for its destination after a delay of one and a half hours.

Mismanagement, overloading

The PR operations suffered not only due to accidents but also mismanagement, which resulted in severe distress for passengers.

On Thursday, several passengers travelling in the Rawalpindi-bound Rawal Express claimed that people without tickets occupied the seats of passengers who had confirmed reservations. They alleged that the staff allowed ticketless passengers on the train, causing severe inconvenience for those travelling with a ticket.

The PR also had to face embarrassment when a video went viral a couple of days ago, showing a Railways Police constable beating a woman passenger and her children in a moving train.

Reportedly, the incident took place in Millat Express, where Constable Meer Hasan assaulted the passenger. After the incident’s video went viral, the higher-ups of Railways Police intervened and arrested the constable.

A case was also registered at the Hyderabad Railways Police Station, but the accused was released after he secured bail from the court.

Shalimar Express escapes disaster near Nawabshah

The Shalimar Express train escaped, fortunately for all onboard, what could have turned out to be a major accident when a dumper truck loaded with gravel got stuck up on tracks at a railway crossing near Nawabshah railway station on Friday.

But for the gateman’s frenetic waving of red flag, which alerted the train driver of the danger ahead and he applied emergency brakes to slow down the speed from 180 km per hour to manageable limits, the collision with the truck could have led to major derailment and possible loss of lives on a major scale.

The train did collide with the truck and managed to push it down the tracks but the impact did not cause it to derail due to its slower speed.

The driver, Abdul Ghaffar, told reporters that the train was moving at 180 km per hour when he noticed the truck stuck up across the tracks and the gateman waving the flag to alert him of the danger.

He immediately applied emergency brakes about 800 meters from the truck, which significantly slowed down the train and resultantly, the relatively low-scale impact saved the train from a major disaster.

Railway Assistant Engineer Maqsood Larik said that as the train was approaching the gateman began to close the gate but before he could shut it completely the dumper driver hastily drove the gravel-loaded truck onto the tracks. Hence, the gateman started waving the flag to alert the driver and helped him [the driver] avert a possible disaster, he said.

Later, heavy machinery borrowed from municipal administration was brought to clear the tracks and restore train service as the railway administration did not have such machinery to do the job.

The Shalimar Express was going to Lahore when it met the accident. The truck driver fled the scene while rescue teams and railway officials rushed to rescue and provide relief to passengers.

Nawabshah Mayor Qazi Rashid Bhatti and Old Nawabshah town chairman Hayat Kakepoto brought food and drinks for the weary passengers.

Shalimar Express coaches derail near Lahore, no casualties

The Shalimar Express, traveling from Lahore to Karachi, derailed near Shahdara area of Punjab's Lahore disctrict on Thursday, causing three of its coaches to go off track.

The derailment, which took place near Barkat Town, narrowly avoided a major catastrophe, a local news channel reported.

The train, instead of toppling into a populated area, got stuck in the middle of a bridge, preventing further damage.

Following the incident, train operations between Lahore and Faisalabad have been suspended, causing disruptions for passengers and freight movement.

Rescue teams were immediately dispatched to the site to assist in recovery efforts. Railway staff and police arrived to assess the damage and manage the situation.

CEO of Railways, Ameer Ali Baloch, has ordered an investigation into the derailment.

According to railway officials, the accident was triggered by the breaking of an old wooden track, which had been in use for nearly 200 years. Fortunately, no casualties or injuries have been reported so far.

Railway authorities have come under criticism for their negligence in maintaining the aging track infrastructure, which played a crucial role in the accident.

Efforts are underway to restore train services as soon as possible.
