Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim has announced that a group of military forces have engaged in a "coup attempt" against the government.
Yildirim made the announcement late on Friday, as he vowed that the "perpetrators" will be contained.
He said that a number of generals are involved in the takeover of the government.
"It seems there is dissent in the military ranks," Al Jazeera's Zeina Khodr, reporting from Gaziantep, said.
Istanbul's Bosphorus Bridge and Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge have reportedly been shut down by the Turkish army, local television channels reported, without giving a reason.
Dogan News Agency footage showed cars and buses being diverted, according to Reuters.
Reuters witnesses in Istanbul, Turkey's largest city, also spotted helicopters overhead.
In the capital Ankara, gunshots were heard, as military jets and helicopters were seen flying overhead, a Reuters witness said.
Turkey has had a history of coup attempts, the last time being carried out in 1997, which forced the resignation of then-prime minister Nemettin Erbakan.
Hard to tell if this is good or bad.
On the one hand the military in charge rarely ends well, on the other hand Erdogan is a nutcase.
How on earth Turkey are up for EU membership baffles me.
Not gonna end well.
I hope the new ruler is Islamic minded, unlike Erdogan.
The Turkish army does have elements just like the Pakistan army who are more Islamically minded but Turkey being a Nato member is controlled into what ideology can rule and it won't be an Islamic one.
I hope the new ruler is Islamic minded, unlike Erdogan.
but erdogan is an islamist and this is a secular coup
??

If there is no Islamic element, then it will be a useless coup, there won't be any difference between Erdogan and the new ruler.
The difference this time is the coup will destabilise a country to an extent which cannot be imagined. You can sadly expect attacks to rise significantly if the army stays in power.
If this Turkish Military is indeed secular, then I fear a civil war may break out, God help the people of Turkey.
They are probably secular in the same sense as Assad.
If this Turkish Military is indeed secular, then I fear a civil war may break out, God help the people of Turkey.
There is a battle within the army between those who want Turkey to be more Islamic and those who want Turkey to go back to 100% secular, ban headscarves etc.
Either way, they are not a Muslim army but a Nato army who was secular genocidal maniacs.
Turkey has declared martial law, so erdogan is going to Qatar according to some Iranian source. All social media sites are blocked.
Serious Question: Was this the right thing to do when Turkey has terrorist groups next door? They might try to capitalize on this. We all know how dictators react when dealing with terrorism.
An army led turkey will be much useful next door
But is it going to be useful for Turkish people? How will these guys deal with the Kurdish insurgency in Turkey? I hope the dictator is a cool headed guy.
Coup seems to have failed...
that was dramatic, hope there were not many fatalities
A coup tomorrow in Pakistan would be successful, the people seem to love raheel Sharif.Coup in 2016. I think the idiots in army underestimated the power of people and Erdogan.
Tyrkey is not Pakistan and Erdogan is not Nawaz Sharif
A coup tomorrow in Pakistan would be successful, the people seem to love raheel Sharif.
Looks like White House and NATO completely favor democratically elected government over this anarchy. No way this coup is going to be successful.

good news. dictators are what's needed in the islamic world to protect the rest of the world from islamists.

If the coup failed,
then this is probably the best time to use Ron Burgundy's meme, well that deescalated quite quickly.
Slowly it starts to seem like a cunning ploy by Erdogan. With the supposedly coup failing, he'll be looking to secure all powers needed to implement his striven for absolute rule.
109 soldiers involved allegedly. 30 of them lay down weapons in taksim square after being surrounded by military police?
could be all over by morning. would be interested to know who was behind it though. there could be any number of actors funding and motivating it though...
