Hard to tell if this is good or bad.

On the one hand the military in charge rarely ends well, on the other hand Erdogan is a nutcase.

How on earth Turkey are up for EU membership baffles me.

Turkey's military say in a statement they have taken over.

Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim has announced that a group of military forces have engaged in a "coup attempt" against the government.

Yildirim made the announcement late on Friday, as he vowed that the "perpetrators" will be contained.

He said that a number of generals are involved in the takeover of the government.

"It seems there is dissent in the military ranks," Al Jazeera's Zeina Khodr, reporting from Gaziantep, said.

Istanbul's Bosphorus Bridge and Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge have reportedly been shut down by the Turkish army, local television channels reported, without giving a reason.

Dogan News Agency footage showed cars and buses being diverted, according to Reuters.

Reuters witnesses in Istanbul, Turkey's largest city, also spotted helicopters overhead.

In the capital Ankara, gunshots were heard, as military jets and helicopters were seen flying overhead, a Reuters witness said.

Turkey has had a history of coup attempts, the last time being carried out in 1997, which forced the resignation of then-prime minister Nemettin Erbakan.

Erdogan may be crazy but the last thing the world needs right now is a coup such as this in such an important country.

Does this have something to do with Erdogan normalizing relations with Israel and Russia?

Doubt it

What is important is that the new Turkish PM hinted they may support Assad while Erdogan claimed no, which was a difference of opinion.
The Saudis reportedly threatened Turkey to not change their tone, and now the coup takes place ....

Some hostages have been taken at the military HQ including a top general !

And the Brexiters thought Turkey was gona join the EU LOL

Nothing unusual for Turkey.

Erdogan has resisted such coups before and has arrested generals. This may just be revenge but eventually the army will have to retreat as Erdogan's party has too much support.

6-6 Turk Pakistan bhai bhai.

The Turkish army does have elements just like the Pakistan army who are more Islamically minded but Turkey being a Nato member is controlled into what ideology can rule and it won't be an Islamic one.

If there is no Islamic element, then it will be a useless coup, there won't be any difference between Erdogan and the new ruler.

When a head of state is forced to make a statement via Facetime you know he's losing control of the state apparatus.

No one would be watching the events unfolding in Turkey as closely as our own Mian sahab.

The difference this time is the coup will destabilise a country to an extent which cannot be imagined. You can sadly expect attacks to rise significantly if the army stays in power.

If this Turkish Military is indeed secular, then I fear a civil war may break out, God help the people of Turkey.

There is a battle within the army between those who want Turkey to be more Islamic and those who want Turkey to go back to 100% secular, ban headscarves etc.

Either way, they are not a Muslim army but a Nato army who was secular genocidal maniacs.

I don't think it's just internal especially with erdogan's recent diplomatic moves

Either way we're unlikely to see erdogan again unless he wants to spend life in jail

News is that the president has been refused permission to land at Istanbul airport and he is heading towards Germany to claim asylum!

Really shocking news I was welcomed to when I got home from work. what have these Generals have done in past which they would now. They keep ruining the country. I hope we see large number of Turkish people on road to protest against this freaking coup.

NBC reporting that President Erdogan's asylum request has been rejected by the Germans, he is thought to be flying to London.

Turkey has declared martial law, so erdogan is going to Qatar according to some Iranian source. All social media sites are blocked.

taksim square and airport surrounded by erdogan supporters

first pics on CNN of people shot ... this could get ugly, pray not ...

Serious Question: Was this the right thing to do when Turkey has terrorist groups next door? They might try to capitalize on this. We all know how dictators react when dealing with terrorism.

Street battles between police and the army

Unless erdogan gets Nick fury in , theres no chance of beating the Turkish army

An army led turkey will be much useful next door

But it looks the Turkish army is not united, and already there are reports tanks have withdrawn from Istanbul airport ...

A slow coup is a failed coup ....

The military is throwing a coup, and the police officers are arresting the army men LOL.

Coup seems to have failed...

that was dramatic, hope there were not many fatalities

But is it going to be useful for Turkish people? How will these guys deal with the Kurdish insurgency in Turkey? I hope the dictator is a cool headed guy.

They were given immunity by erdogan in one of his last moves so I'm sure they've got it all worked out

Sisi is probably going to be the example to follow if not Mushy

Turkish fighter jet has shot down a military helicopter! Army against army?

Expected to fail but not in this fashion. Erdogan probably set the whole thing up to get rid of those army officials he hasn't been able to as of yet and strengthen his own power.

About a dozen police officers killed. Whoever in the military thought this was a good idea should be punished severely. There are already a lot of problems in world and these guys are making it worse.

If it fails, you can count on the Generals to have these lower-level officers court martialed and executed. Generals generally (pardon the pun) do not like lowly Colonels getting ahead of themselves. Our own generals have foiled coup attempts, once in 1995, and more recently by that Hizb-ul-Tehreer Brigadier.

Coup in 2016. I think the idiots in army underestimated the power of people and Erdogan.

Tyrkey is not Pakistan and Erdogan is not Nawaz Sharif

Looks like White House and NATO completely favor democratically elected government over this anarchy. No way this coup is going to be successful.

Looks like erdogan is back on the winning side thanks to those courageous police officers

good news. dictators are what's needed in the islamic world to protect the rest of the world from islamists.

A coup tomorrow in Pakistan would be successful, the people seem to love raheel Sharif.

You are right a coup in Pakistan would be welcomed with people distributing sweets as in 1999. Thats how dumb we 'bloody civilians' are.

Like the one in Syria or Sauida or Qatar or Egypt or Iranian puppet in Iraq?

Everytime a civilian govt moves away from Kemal Ataturks idea of Turkey somehow the Army interferes.

If the coup failed, than this is probably the best time to use Ron Burgundy's meme, well that escalated quite quickly.

Slowly it starts to seem like a cunning ploy by Erdogan. With the supposedly coup failing, he'll be looking to secure all powers needed to implement his striven for absolute rule.

Erdogan is going to wreck the military now. Islamist fundamentalists will rule Turkey for ages.

Erdogan's plane landing in Istanbul. Mashallah I hope he makes all of them pay for trying to destroy turkey.

109 soldiers involved allegedly. 30 of them lay down weapons in taksim square after being surrounded by military police?

could be all over by morning. would be interested to know who was behind it though. there could be any number of actors funding and motivating it though...

But wouldn't bypassing the command structure mean court martials for the soldiers involved? Why would they play along with Erdogan's ploy?

Lol what a failure. They should take training from Pakistan. At least Pakistani coups look official.

The Turkish Qoum is not Bewakoof like one particular set of people according to whom the solution to all problems in the country is Military and would welcome a Coup in the country with open arms.

To maintain democratic order they attempted coup? How stupid is the Army there?

This was very poorly planned and premature stuff from a small batch in the army. The army should have been united and should have quickly captured the PM and President. They really should have taken a leaf from Musharraf's coup which imo was masterfully and beautifully executed.

Hearing a lot of reports of violence, hopefully Turkey can quickly recover and become a stable nation.

This will just embolden Erdogan to be even more authoritarian, thanks a lot military clowns for making things even worse for the country.

And for the record, I support Turkish democracy. I won't support Erdogan. And I definitely won't support military coup's that overthrow democratically-elected leaders, no matter how disliked they are. Otherwise why wouldn't anyone support tanks rolling into Budapest to overthrow Hungary's Orban then?

I wish this was true because majority of the Isamic world is rule by dictators and you're still wetting your pants out of imaginary fear.
