Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim has opened up about his and the team's disappointment at the proposed two-tier system in Test cricket. He has become the first international cricketer to voice his opinion about the 'position paper' which is put forward by a working group of the Finance & Commercial Affairs committee of the ICC.

Bangladesh's main concern is their future in Test cricket. One of the proposals is to make the teams ranked Nos. 9 and 10 play in the Intercontinental Cup (the ICC's first-class tournament for non-Test nations) from 2015. That will leave very little room for Bangladesh to play any more Test matches against the top eight countries, particularly if the FTP is done away with and series are decided on a bilateral basis. Currently Bangladesh are No. 10 in the ICC Test rankings.

Mushfiqur was left frustrated by yet another off-field issue bothering the Bangladesh cricket team. The build-up to the Test series against Sri Lanka, starting in less than two days, has already become something of a sideshow with so much talk about the draft proposals. He thinks that players must have a say in such big decisions, mainly because it is they who do the job out in the middle.

"If the two-tier system does happen, then what is the use of all this?" Mushfiqur said. "We work very hard to play cricket, so it will be very disappointing if it does indeed happen. This is a big issue, so it is quite obvious that I will feel bad. It is not in our hands. In the last two or three series, we are facing one problem after another."

"Whatever decision is taken, we have to play in the field. We have to face the consequences of every decision."

Mushfiqur said the Bangladesh players have been talking about the planned new system, which has the potential to put their cricket careers in doubt. But he doesn't believe his side has anything else to prove. He also doesn't think the cloud over their Test future is working as an extra motivation at this stage.

"We have been discussing the matter, and everyone has a similar sentiment. What if this is what happens in the end? But I don't think it is working as a motivation. It is not in our hands, so there is not much to be motivated about from this. We have played some consistent cricket in the last two years. We just have to continue on that.

"We have nothing to show to anyone. I think we can fight them with the team we have and the consistency we have shown. I hope everything gets better, and I hope such a thing doesn't happen and we get to play."

He feels the time has come for him to talk to players from other countries, to probably find a solution to the dilemma, while at the same time maintain communication with BCB officials so that the right decision is taken.

"We haven't talked to players from any other country. But maybe we have to do so quite soon. We haven't had the chance to speak to them [officials] too. We have spoken informally but nothing official as of now. I hope whoever is in charge of this decision, do so in the best interest of the country."

Meanwhile, the BCB has said it will oppose the two-tier system, and that the decision was taken unanimously by the directors.

"The draft proposal had a lot of components, one of which was Bangladesh not playing Test cricket from 2015," BCB's spokesperson Jalal Yunus said. "All 23 were opposed to going down to the second tier. The BCB are against Bangladesh playing in the second tier."

The statement on Saturday came after growing criticism at home, led by former BCB president Saber Chowdhury who wrote an open letter to the incumbent chief, blasting him and the board directors for aligning with the draft proposal.

"The voting was not on the resolution of the board. It was on a strategic issue, on which we sought opinions of all the directors," Jalal said. "In terms of the financial issues, we want to discuss with other member countries, after which we will take a decision."

LOL remember that heckel jackel/Mr bean stuff ? When was afridi fined for it ?

I was asking a question.
Also, I remember seeing a thread here recently about them being told that they can't speak to the media. And I remember Umar Akmal getting fined for speaking to the media without the PCB's consent.

I ain't against the 2 tier test system as long as their is no exception rule for anyone.

Though I agree that a lot of ex-player's have dissapointed by not speaking out against the proposal of the big 3 takeover and the pathetic exeption rule.

Mushfiq turns down IPL auction agreement

Bangladesh national skipper Mushfiqur Rahim turned down the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction agreement. The national selection panel named eight cricketers for the IPL auction 2014 two days ago. Mushfiq was named along with all-rounder Shakib al Hasan, opening batsman Tamim Iqbal, Nasir Hossain, Mahmudullah, Anamul Haque, Sohag Gazi and Rubel Hossain. However it was learnt from a close source to the Bangladesh Cricket Board that the wicket-keeper batsman refused to sign the IPL auction agreement.

It was learnt that Mushfiq kept himself off from signing the auction agreement considering his chances of getting a team – a consideration for all the cricketers in Bangladesh in view of their poor track record in the shortest format of the game.

The truth is harsh. The IPL teams hardly have had any interest in our cricketers except one or two from the current lot. IPL has been taking place for seven years now but only few have been able to get a team as they are not too good in the format. He (Mushfiq) might have thought of the fact and pulled his name out,” said a BCB high-up to Dhaka Tribune yesterday.

Since the first edition of the cash-rich Twenty20 tournament in 2008, only five cricketers – Abdur Razzak (Royal Challengers Bangalore, 2008), Mashrafe bin Mortaza (Kolkata Knight Riders, 2009), Mohammad Ashraful (Delhi Daredevils, 2009), Shakib (Kolkata Knight Riders, 2011 and 2012) and Tamim (Pune Warriors, 2012) were bought from the auctions.

However selection panel memberHabibul Bashar thinks the scenario has changed now. The former national skipper believes that the Bangladesh cricketers have matured in the shortest format cricket and have been competing well with the top teams.

“It is true that Bangladesh lacked maturity and performance in Twenty20. There was a time when the boys were busy coping with the game. But I think that time has passed. Our cricketers are up there now, have been doing well in recent times and are prepared to play.

“The eight names that we chalked out were the best cricketers in the format, taking their recent track record into account. We (the national selection panel) believed that they have a very good chance of getting a team for the upcoming IPL season. It is totally Mushfiq’s personal decision and to be honest, I don’t know why he made the decision,” said Bashar

@mithun_minhas, Mushfiqur Rahim has already withdrawn his name from the IPL players auction for this year. He said that he wants to play bd domestic league instead of IPL as there are very low interest for bd players.

Great stuff Mushfiqur. Respect.
Hopefully other players will also speak up against this ridiculous proposal.

Respect to Mush for sticking up for his team.... Shame the adminstrators have no cahoonas.

Rahim is a brave and positive person who takes in tonnes of responsibility. Only 25 years old and these silly people behind the scenes are basically ruining his and many other cricketers careers

Hope others for once speak out.

Man win some test matches then whine.for me bangladesh deserve to be in 2nd tier, they are a disgrace to test cricket and i say that with respect.

Well if you've actually watched them play you'd know they've been improving...

They should play with zim, irl, afg.who ever tops should be promoted to tier 1.can bangladesh take 20 wickets at least 3 times in 10 test?

We can .But we are dished up with flat tracks every now on then. Tracks where our no.8 and no. 10 batsman came in and scored a hundred easily.

And it will be unfair to call us a disgrace now given that we have actually improved as opposed to the past where we actually failed miserably. I mean how many actually watched us play NZ last October, almost identical to the one that is currently beating India.

I think that at most two teams will agree with the draft so ia it wont happen

The draft won't happen. I'm up for one tier system with relegation long as no one gets the special treatment. If you are the 9th and 10th place team and you feel that you deserve a Test status, why don't you prove it by defeating the winner of intercontinental as they are COMPETING for your spot as well ?/

Save Test cricket by making two-tier system a reality

Tests like Brisbane and Adelaide are killing test cricket. Time to eliminate the meaningless , one sided tests and divide the teams into two tier.

1-Tier-1: India, Australia, England, New Zealand and South Africa

2-Tier-2: WI, SL, BD, Ireland , Afghanistan , Zim and Pakistan

It should be based upon promotion and demotion bases.

Agree.

Only change I'll make is to have odd number of teams in tier 2 for even distribution of home and away games. So, I'd either take Zimbabwe out or give one of Scotland/Netherlands Test status.
