Nice v Cologne: Uefa opens disciplinary proceedings after fan violence

Uefa has opened disciplinary proceedings against Nice and Cologne after Thursday's Europa Conference League tie in France was delayed because of violent clashes between rival supporters.

Fans fought in the stands of Nice's Allianz Riviera, with flares thrown.

Police intervened to end the trouble and the game kicked off at 18:40 BST, 55 minutes after it was originally scheduled to begin.

The game finished as a 1-1 draw.

Both sides have been charged for crowd disturbances, throwing of objects and lighting of fireworks, while additional charges filed against Nice include those relating to "screening and searching of spectators", "identification of persons responsible", "security personnel", "blocking of public passageways" and "limitation of spectator movement".

Uefa has charged Marseille and Eintracht Frankfurt with nine offences, including racist behaviour of Eintracht fans, following their Champions League tie on Tuesday.

Hosts Marseille's five charges include the throwing of objects, lighting of fireworks and use of laser pointers.

Eintracht were charged with racist behaviour, lighting of fireworks, throwing of objects and acts of damage.

On Tuesday, Eintracht condemned a fan who appeared to perform a Nazi salute.

The German side won the Group D match 1-0.

Uefa said its disciplinary bodies will decide on the matter in due course.

Arsenal put in another strong display to comfortably see off Bodo/Glimt 3-0 in the Europa League at the Emirates.

Erik Ten Hag praised an inspired substitute performance from Marcus Rashford after he earned Manchester United a nervy 3-2 Europa League win over Omonia Nicosia.

Arsenal in action....

Arsenal 0-0 PSV Eindhoven (so far)

GOAL - Arsenal 1-0 PSV Eindhoven
Granit Xhaka

Arsenal take a deserved lead and it is a tidy finish from Granit Xhaka on the half volley.

Substitute Martin Odegaard plays it wide right to the overlapping Takehiro Tomiyasu and he finds Xhaka unmarked 15-yards out.

It's great technique from the Swiss midfielder, keeping the strike down just as the ball was rising and that's the lead for Arsenal.

Cristiano Ronaldo marked his return to the Manchester United fold with his 701st career goal to seal a comfortable Europa League 3-0 win over Sheriff Tiraspol at Old Trafford.

Premier League leaders Arsenal have to "reset" after losing to PSV Eindhoven 2-0 and missing the chance to seal top spot in Europa League Group A, says boss Mikel Arteta.

Manchester United have been drawn against Barcelona in the Europa League knockout round play-offs.

The stage of the competition features eight runners-up from their Europa League groups, which includes United, playing the eight teams who were third in their Champions League group.

Former United manager Jose Mourinho's Roma side will play FC Salzburg, while Juventus face Nantes.

The first legs are on 16 February, with the second legs on 23 February.

The winners go into the last-16, which includes Arsenal after they topped their Europa League group.

United, who finished second behind Real Sociedad in their group, will be away for the first leg at the Nou Camp, followed by a meeting at Old Trafford seven days later.

Erik ten Hag's side were heavily linked with Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong during the summer, but the Dutch international ended up staying with the Spanish side.

Barcelona, who are top of La Liga, finished third behind Bayern Munich and Inter Milan in their Champions League group.

"We will have to compete, going to Manchester against a really top rival and an historic side which has grown a lot with the arrival of [Erik] ten Hag," said Barcelona boss Xavi.

"[They have] great individual players and it is the toughest rival once again in the Europa League.

"It's a massive challenge for us."

Sevilla have won the Europa League six times and will take on Dutch side PSV Eindhoven.

Manchester United produced a memorable second-half comeback to reach the Europa League last 16 and knock out Barcelona in the process.

Sevilla goalkeeper Marko Dmitrovic was attacked by a pitch invader as PSV Eindhoven beat their Spanish opponents on the night but lost 3-2 on aggregate.

Manchester United will play Real Betis in the Europa League last 16 after overcoming Barcelona, while Arsenal face Sporting Lisbon.

United beat the La Liga leaders 2-1 at Old Trafford on Thursday to seal a 4-3 aggregate win in the play-off tie.

Arsenal will play the second leg of their tie at home after qualifying as group winners, while Manchester United host Betis at Old Trafford first.

The Europa League last-16 ties will take place on 9 and 16 March.

Premier League leaders Arsenal avoided the knockout round play-offs by topping Group A with five wins from their six games.

Sporting, fourth in the Portuguese top flight, beat Danish club Midtjylland 5-1 in their play-off after they finished third in their Champions League group.

Meanwhile, Manuel Pellegrini's Real Betis are fifth in La Liga and ended the Europa League group stage with the best record in the competition, winning five and drawing one of their matches.

Elsewhere, six-time winners Sevilla meet Fenerbahce, while Jose Mourinho's Roma will play Real Sociedad - who topped Manchester United's group.

The eight Europa League group winners were drawn against the eight clubs who came through the knockout round play-off matches, with clubs from the same association not allowed to be drawn against each other.

Manchester United responded to their Anfield humiliation in the best manner possible as they thrashed Real Betis 4-1 in the Europa League at Old Trafford.

Arsenal must "improve massively" if they are to continue winning games, says manager Mikel Arteta after the Gunners were held to a 2-2 draw by Sporting Lisbon in an entertaining Europa League last-16 first leg.

Juventus established a narrow 1-0 Europa League first-leg advantage over Freiburg without Paul Pogba who was dropped for disciplinary reasons.

Arsenal were knocked out of the Europa League at the last-16 stage in a penalty shootout defeat by Sporting Lisbon at Emirates Stadium.

Marcus Rashford was on target again as Manchester United cruised into the quarter-finals of the Europa League with a clinical 1-0 win at Real Betis.

Feyenoord equalled the record for the biggest Europa League knockout win as they thrashed Shakhtar Donetsk 7-1 to advance to the last eight with an 8-2 aggregate victory.

Manchester United will meet record six-time winners Sevilla in the quarter-finals of the Europa League.

Should they advance, Erik ten Hag's side will face either Juventus - whose squad includes former United midfielder Paul Pogba - or Arsenal's conquerors Sporting Lisbon in the semi-finals.

In the other last-eight ties, Roma face Feyenoord and Bayer Leverkusen meet Union Saint-Gilloise.

The first legs take place on 13 April, with the return games on 20 April.

Sevilla are serial winners of this competition, having won all of their six titles since 2006 and they defeated the Red Devils in the semi-finals on their way to winning it in 2020.

Their squad includes Brazil defender Alex Telles, who is on loan from United.

Ten Hag's side, who won last month's Carabao Cup, are also still in the FA Cup and host Fulham in the quarter-finals of that competition on Sunday.

Manchester United conceded two own goals and lost Lisandro Martinez to a serious-looking injury in the final six minutes against Sevilla to put their Europa League hopes in jeopardy.

United looked to be coasting to a quarter-final first-leg victory at Old Trafford thanks to Marcel Sabitzer's first-half double.

However, after Antony had hit the crossbar, Sevilla came back into the contest and profited from a terrible ending to the game for Erik ten Hag's men.

First Tyrell Malacia diverted the ball past David de Gea after former Manchester City man Jesus Navas had pulled a low cross back from the goalline.

Then, two minutes into injury time, Youssef En-Nesyri's off-target header struck Harry Maguire to leave De Gea helpless as it flew into the net.

The scoreline is bad enough as it leaves United facing a battle to secure the semi-final spot they seemed to have virtually sealed.

However, the loss of Martinez is a major concern, particularly as Raphael Varane had to be replaced at half-time.

Martinez had to be carried from the field by his Argentina team-mates Gonzalo Montiel and Marcos Acuna and then left for the dressing room on a stretcher in obvious pain after catching his foot in the turf with no opponent near him.

West Ham remain well placed to make back-to-back European semi-finals despite seeing their 100% winning run in the Europa Conference League ended by Gent.

The Hammers looked on course to make it 11 wins out of 11 in Europe this season when Danny Ings tapped home after the hosts were caught out by a quickly taken throw-in.

David Moyes' side, Europa League semi-finalists last season, had to soak up waves of pressure in an intense quarter-final first leg in Belgium and Gent equalised after a clever touch and finish by Hugo Cuypers.

"I didn't think the performance was good but the result was not a bad result," West Ham boss Moyes said.

"I think you will find everyone has worked really hard to be here and they don't want to give up a chance to make a semi-final."

The hosts piled forward in search of a winner to take into next week's return leg, with Gift Orban - who scored a hat-trick in 205 seconds in the last round - hitting the bar with a wonderful 82nd-minute acrobatic attempt.

There was drama deep in stoppage time when Gent's Kamil Piatkowski was shown a red card for bringing down substitute Lucas Paqueta, but it was overturned after the referee watched the incident again on the pitchside monitor.

A fantastic comeback from Mourinho's Roma to beat Feyenoord!

Equalised the tie in the 89th minute to take it to ET, then scored 2 goals in the extra 30 mins and go through 4-2. Proper box office

Edoardo Bove's second-half goal gave Jose Mourinho's Roma a 1-0 advantage over Bayer Leverkusen after the first leg of their Europa League semi-final.

Federico Gatti scored a 97th-minute equaliser to earn Juventus a 1-1 draw against Sevilla in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final.

Jose Mourinho's Roma reached the Europa League final by holding Bayer Leverkusen to a goalless draw in the second leg of their semi-final tie.

Six-time winners Sevilla are through to a seventh Europa League final after their extra-time win over Juventus in a pulsating semi-final second leg.

Sevilla beat Roma on penalties to win Europa League

Sevilla claimed a record-extending seventh Europa League title as they beat Roma on penalties at a raucous Puskas Arena in Budapest.

Gonzalo Montiel, who also scored the winning penalty for Argentina in the World Cup final against France, repeated the trick for the Spanish side following a 1-1 draw, with a retaken spot kick after Roger Ibanez and Gianluca Mancini had missed for Roma.

The Spanish side, have now won all seven of the finals they have played in the competition with captain Jesus Navas involved in their first triumph against Middlesbrough in 2006.

Their most recent sees them qualify for next season's Champions League despite finishing outside the top four in the La Liga.

However, there will be a feeling that it could have been so different for Roma and their manager Jose Mourinho, who had won all five of the previous European finals he had been involved in and guided the club to inaugural Europa Conference League success last term.

Montiel's international teammate Paulo Dybala had deservedly put Roma in front during the first period, racing onto to Italy defender Mancini's incisive pass to expertly steer a low effort past Sevilla goalkeeper Yassine Bounou into the bottom right corner.

However, the Serie A side, who also saw Leonardo Spinazzola test Bounou before the break, relinquished their control of a testy encounter which saw 14 players and coaches, including Mourinho booked.

And Sevilla drew level 10 minutes after the break with Navas' cross from the right, deflecting off the unfortunate Mancini into his own net, as they repeatedly pressed forward for an equaliser.

Roma arguably had the better opportunities to win the contest in normal time with Tammy Abraham and Ibanez unable to convert from close range and Andrea Belotti slicing wide from Lorenzo Pellegrini's clever free-kick.

When Lucas Ocampos went down under a challenge from Ibanez, Sevilla appeared to have been handed a golden opportunity to go ahead but, after initially awarding a penalty, English referee Anthony Taylor overturned his decision following a video assistant referee review.

And that set up a tense additional 30 minutes with Chris Smalling heading against the Sevilla crossbar 11 minutes into stoppage time at the end of extra time before the dramatic finale.

Referees' body PGMOL says it is appalled by the "unjustified and abhorrent" abuse directed at Anthony Taylor in Budapest Airport following Wednesday's Europa League final.

The Englishman had officiated the game, where Sevilla beat Roma on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

Taylor and his family were then shouted at by angry fans at the airport.

It came after Roma boss Jose Mourinho was seen in a car park confronting the referee with a foul-mouthed rant.

PGMOL said in a statement: "[We are] aware of videos circulating on social media showing Anthony Taylor and his family being harassed and abused at Budapest Airport.

"We are appalled at the unjustified and abhorrent abuse directed at Anthony and his family as he tries to make his way home from refereeing the Uefa Europa League final.

"We will continue to provide our full support to Anthony and his family."

Meanwhile, Uefa is waiting for reports from match officials and delegates before deciding whether to take action against Mourinho with regards to the separate incident in the car park under the stadium after the match.

Mourinho criticised Taylor in his news conference and he was later captured ranting and making pointed comments as Taylor and officials were boarding a minibus.

The Portuguese repeatedly swore and twice shouted about a "disgrace" before talking in Italian.

Uefa's chief refereeing officer Roberto Rosetti attempted to calm the situation down.

Mourinho was booked during an ill-tempered game, with Taylor repeatedly called to the benches to take action as fourth official Michael Oliver struggled to keep control.

Taylor issued yellow cards to 13 players, the most bookings in a Europa League game. Seven of them were to Roma players, a record for a final.

Delays and injuries saw more than 25 minutes of injury time played across the four halves of the game, which went to extra time and then a shootout.

So as bad as spurs and united have beeb this season, looks like both will reach Europa league final. One of them will win a trophy.

The winner will gain a champions league spot and a trophy. Better than finishing top 5 with no trophy?

A trophy is always better than a higher league finish and zero trophy.

Target for spurs and united at start of season would have been make into CL, preferably through league. But if they do it winning Europa, no one will care about how **** they were rest of season.

Not a chance Spurs beat Man U in the final

Both clubs have benefitted from CL clubs no longer dropping into the competition, they wouldn't have gotten to the final otherwise

I doubt many arsenal fans will see Ange or Amorim as more successful than Arteta if he fails to deliver a trophy again but I agree.

utd should beat spurs but will be an interesting game as huge consequences for both

If Arteta/Arsenal were in the Europa League they would win it with ease so not sure comparing Amorim/Ange to him is entirely fair

If had 2/3 trophies under his belt I'd agree but there is still a question mark over arteta crossing the line. Up against Utd in a final , would be 50/50 imo

Athletic bilbao have one of the best records defensively in all the top European leagues.

To hammer them at their cauldron is a testament to UTDS superiority tonight

🤣🤣 the same Arteta that was in the Europa league 3 times and was embarrassed by Olympiakos, Villareal, and sporting Lisbon

Lets not start this hypothetical nonsense.

16 Cup competions attempts Arteta has managed in since winning FA cup and he's not got to a single final.

His last 6 semi finals as manager the team hasn't even scored

Europa league salvages a poor seaaon for united or spurs

CL does the same for Arsenal.

It's simple as that which ever of these sides doesn't win a trophy as failed.

Current Arsenal team is better than the Europa League Arsenal team he had so him not winning then is irrelevant

Not really. Arsenal have no European pedigree. They haven’t even won the Europa League in their history, not to mention the Champions League. And let’s not forget the fact that Arsenal under Arteta are serial bottlers. So there is no guarantee that Arsenal would have won the Europa league if they were in it.

🤣🤣 based on what?

Facts are hes been a failure again and again I'm Europe

Also a failure in cup competitions in general as well.

Seems you've taken up the part time Arteta membership again.

100% spot on.

Arsenal were in the Europa 3 times under Arteta, in which he had his pants taken down on each occasion whilst being humilated by Olympiakos, villareal and sporting Lisbon.

Also by the logic used by a certain poster.

you could also say Arsenal have a better team then when they won FA cup 5 years ago. Yet they haven't made it past the 5th round since.

You don't think the current Arsenal team is better than the one Arteta had in his first few seasons?

I know you dislike the guy but I'm sure you can be objective about it

I replied to your nonsense comment that Arsenal would win it with ease.

Just because a team has got better, doesn't not guarantee that they would win a trophy.

Your statement implied that Arsenal would win it on basis of "improvement"

Do Arsenal have a better team now then when they won FA cup in 2020? Yes they do, but using your logic. why have they not got passed the 5th round since?

Same goes for the league cup, Arsenal have a better team then 5 years ago, so why did they get humilated home and away by your Newcastle team.

There is no Agenda here, I simply replied to your flawed and comical logic that "because a certain team is better than what it was, it would walk a tournament"

It's a prediction I made based on the standard of the Europa League combined with Arsenal being a better team than 3 seasons ago

The fact that 14th and 16th placed Premier League teams are about to play in the final demonstrates how the standard of f the Europa League has dropped

You got humiliated by us because we are a decent team that are not a million miles away from you and let's be clear we are levels above ManU and Spurs

Again just because the precieved level of quality in europa league has dropped, doesn't mean that Arsenal would have walked it.

It's just like the Arsenal fan base worked off the theory that because they finished 2nd in league to City. That if City then dropped off, that Arsenal would take advantage. Football doesn't work like that, nor do most other sports.

Also with it Europa being a knock out competition like any other so called sting teams can be knocked out.

Most people though Liverpool would win the Europa last season with ease, because they were proven in CL.

In the case of Arsenal, this current team has shown it can't get over the line, so the assumption it would walk a tournament is really far fetched.

Could be 3rd Europa Final for UTD in 8 years , they won against Ajax in 2017 lost to Villareal in 2021 and now another opportunity
