UK General Election. Don't be surprised if Theresa May's gamble fails

That's my alma mater but don't live there, do have relatives there. Yes I'd keep an eye on the Bradford West race but honestly think Labour will have that sewn up.

The problem Labour has in the North and why its power is slipping is that the highly unionised, heavy industry workforce are a tiny fraction of what it once was. This vote bank was reliably Labour.

Now across the old industrial North, service sector jobs predominate and the trade unions have nowhere near the power they once had. For many people, voting Conservative is no longer taboo and younger folk have no recollection of the Thatcher era of mass unemployment. Notice how Theresa May is making a big pitch to Northern voters. She launched the manifesto in Halifax and a lot of cabinet members have been sent up North to woo voters. She wouldn't do that if she thought the Tories had no chance.

Labour has to target its policies towards the new workforce - the self-employed, the part-time workers, those that work in the "gig economy" as we now call it.

Otherwise the unthinkable will happen and the North, or at least some portions of it, will turn blue. Thankfully don't see that happening at this Election.

I support Adil Rashid as he's a proud Yorkshireman. This bloody county is propping up the English team. We supply the captains and middle order batsmen.

Note who scored England's ONLY fifty in the thrashing in the 3rd ODI v SAF and where he comes from. That's Yorkshire grit shining through.

Anyway back to the election - there's a BBC debate featuring the main 7 party leaders, apart from PM May who chickened out, tonight at 7:30pm.

Thank god Corbyn decided to join the debate as it would've been a massive opportunity wasted. He cannot afford to turn down national primetime television exposure - especially when Corbyn's personal ratings have INCREASED as the campaign has progressed as people have gotten to know him.

Ah, this Yorkshire quota is hindering superior talent all round England; mind telling us where the chairman of the board is from ;) but even a Bairstow at his absolute peak can't keep the MIGHT of the BEARD to be FEARED out of the CT starting XI :))

Am glad he is going to appear I have something to watch tonight, need to get my work out the way first though; it should be very interesting. A shame that May is not participating, it is beyond me; this lack of confidence in herself to convey her strong and stable ideas does not reflect so well on her. It's like delivering a presentation isn't it? it's a lot easier when you know what you're talking about throughly regardless of whether it comes naturally or not; I hate public speaking but I just pretend that am Ric Flair and make sue I know my stuff. May is a chor.

Very clever move from Corbyn to gatecrash, another chance for him to raise his profile, and won't be the Paxman-style grilling this time either.

I'm open to change. After thirty years of voting Labour I joined the Liberal Democrats. If we want better services the majority of us will have to pay more tax - lots more.

Right now we have the two worst main options I can remember - one party internally riven, hell-bent on hard Brexit and more service cuts forever, led by someone who is arguably not up to the job; and another which is well-meaning but lacking in credible spending plans, internally riven and 'led' by a populist who cannot manage his own communications office, let alone a major party.

What makes me disillusioned is that intellectual arguments have stopped working. Most of the keen Labour minds have fled the front bench in despair while the Tories are driven by a BluKIP lemming charge over a cliff. Populists on the left and right have made it all about emotional need and my own party - that of reason and considered compromise - languishes on 8%. Perhaps there is no room for reason in modern politics.

Looks like there will be a Tory minority government unable to get anything done while we face the colossal challenge of Brexit.

What an utter mess we are in.

This is where you and Corbyn supporters massively disagree. I think he is more up to the job than any recent leader in British history because he listens to the people not to the elites.

Corbyn should make a deal with the SNP for another Scottish referendum, anything it takes to become PM. I am optimistic now of our chances for victory. :ik

Have no idea but the name is making me hungry, sounds like some good country food. Or am I just always thinking of food :inzi

JC should have opened with saying where is Theresa May tonight?

Attacking Nuttall is going to be easy points for everybody tonight :D

So "strong and stable" has been replaced by "money tree"

Corbyn spitting hot FYAH just there :aag

I almost feel sorry for Rudd, almost. Getting torn apart because May was too scared to face questions.

Farron has done really well so far

Am not watching the live broadcast am behind by about 10 min nuthall just got owned on corp tax

Only thing so far re Farron is that he almost admitted that Tories are going to win the election.

Big Mac Nutball "Jeremey!......Jeremy!..........Jeremy!" *May's pitball interupts* :)))

Corbyn completely and utterly wrong re taking advantage of foreign workers.

Corbyn needs to attack SNP and Plaid more - Labour's position in Scotland and Wales needs shoring up.

We can have our very own debate here :))

Amber Rudd's making a leadership pitch here. She's a better public speaker than Theresa May who is dull tedium personified.

shaz619 nuttall makes some good points sick of unskilled immigrants undercutting our working class.

Enough is Enough.

Rudd asking that we judge the Tories on their record of supporting public services :)))

I agree, he made some thought provoking points ; if his party didn't go full tard mode as we've seen in the past they'd be taken a bit more seriously

I know Corbyn is the flavour of the month. Almost everyone I know likes him but I'm not so sure now.

Judge us on our record, big botch on the mic there :))) Sid Viscous would be proud

Question: how to Make Britain a safer country?!?!?

Answer: travel to Other places around world including America and then thank your lucky stars

Farron is killing it

:salute

Its unlikely it'll happen but I would like to see a progressive Labour-Lib Dem coalition.

Lib Dem do have a well costed manifesto. According to the IFS, they have the clearest plan on funding the NHS as they propose adding a penny on income tax which would raise £6bn.

Why should a child's future be determine by their post code  go on Jez !

Has it been done before? what is their relationship like

I hate the green woman let people speak dammit ! behave like professionals you bunch of children!

Corbyn struggled at the start of that terrorism question but ended it with a good response to Rudd's attack on his voting record.

Big Mac will there be any breaks ? I need to go to the loo

Stupid framing of the question from Mishal Hussain.

The security services HAD the Manchester attacker under surveillance - so they don't need more powers, they need more manpower.

Thank you Tim Farron for mentioning that the Manchester attacker WAS reported five times by local Muslim community.

Agree with Paul Nuttall about stopping Saudi funding of mosques.

I think Farron nailed it again.

What are her political beliefs ?

Caroline Lucas is wasted in our terrible first past the post voting system.

Paris Agreement question - go on Caroline Lucas that's a free hit for you.

Guys,

Really enjoying the commentary here.
Could be more exciting then the India Vs Pakistan game on Sunday

I've been very impressed by Farron, first time I've listened to him

Whenever camera focus's on Nuthall can't stop laughing at that baldy :))) he reminds me of tailender's who give batting a go, maybe they'll fold in a couple of balls or they'll play a cameo; either way they are entertaining to watch :yk The extremist threat does need some attention with regards to ideology but people won't take Nuthall seriously when his folk probably make silly generalisations

Paul Nuttall doesn't stand in Liverpool because most Scousers think he's a bad meff.

You got to love the Greens, they are seriously passionate and very smart. She just destroyed May who is at home watching with tea and digestives.

Astagfirullah, they'd have a hell in a cell match on live TV if it did come to it :)) Nawaz would seek refuge in the UK or Saudia lol

I feel sorry for Amber Rudd. She must really hate her boss!

Corbyn quite impressive, particularly on antiterror votes. He was prepared for that and smashed Rudd's serve back down her throat.

Nuttall is awful.

Caroline Lucas always quietly persuasive.

Well done Tiger Tim! Hopefully that will covert into a seat or two gained in the South West and the posh parts of SW London.

Agree, I feel Lib dems will climb the polls now but hopefully take votes off the Tories.

Corbyn did well over all, it's not easy when there are so many but it helps when most are criticising his main opponent.

May has shot her self in the foot bigtime with staying away. The next couple of days could be key in shifting the balance.

I entertained the idea of voting for him momentarily during that debate, but Labour will have a bigger influence in my constituency and gives more hope of dethroning a Tory government even if they are up against it.

Tim by far was the most impressive followed by Jeremy. SNP, Green and Plaid Cumerie were around about the same in terms of performance. Nuthall and Tory can share the golden raspberry award

Lucas was fantastic, Farron was very good.

Corbyn was up and down, not great but not terrible.

Rudd was poor.

Nuttall just shouted like that crazy bloke down the pub who thinks he's understand economics and foreign policy.

I voted for their party's representative for west midlands mayoral candidate, poor guy got wiped out :(

Wish he represented Labour

I think that regardless of all our differences the one thing we all can agree on is that WE DO NOT WANT A TORY GOVERNMENT FOR ANOTHER 5 YEARS !!
