What's new

Umair Masood - Young wicket-keeper batsman

Is he playing in PSL? Pretty much everyone I see playing in the PSL are players I recognize ex or current players from Pakistan.

Not sure if too many players from the gone u19 wc are playing here.

I mean we Indians got to see Pantl,Sarfaraz etc and in the past Samson,Chand etc in the IPL..similarly Khalil and other Indian U19 standouts are part of IPL rosters.

I thought this kid was the standout for pak in the u19 wc.

What's the point if u19 players are not given a go. Always exciting to see how these prospects do at a bigger level.

Just curious.

I think Zalmi should give chances to U Masood and Sameen now. It is impossible for them not to qualify for play offs.

The requirement to have 2 emerging players in each squad is great for young up-and-coming talent- good initiative.

Credit should also go to Pindi for playing him. Playing in the longer format will be a great experience for him. One to watch.

Good question.

Just found this.

Thanks. Will take a look.

Scored 45 against PTV in Round 3. Is settling into FC cricket nicely.

Should not be playing for Rawalpindi and their bowler friendly pitches if he wants to remotely come close to selection in future. Our selectors only see no of runs at the end of season.

Should learn from what happened to Umar Waheed.

True, but it's his first FC season and it's good of Pindi to have selected him. I am sure he will move to a department soon.

Batting at #9 in National T20  below Tanvir and Nawaz.

Even Shadab is batting below Tanvir and Nawaz.

yes somethings like these need to be addressed. do the seniors try to dominate and show their big face to the team captain or coach or to the players..

Pakistan think tank don't like to think towards the future. We needs a back up for Sarfraz but still no keeper is being developed correctly.

This is a mystery to me - everyone talks about Sadaf (including his stats), but no one picks him. It can’t be a world wide conspiracy for such a guy. At least 3 franchise could have picked him, at least as Sup., to bowl 4 overs up front with new ball, but this is 3rd PSL .....

what about the other guy/does he impress u like me with hs energy in this short clip?

This is where I want Inzi to put his foot down and force domestic teams to play these younger batsmen with potential further up. Otherwise the likes of Tanvir will continue to ruin talents like Masood.

expecting inzi to do this ............

He should be picked by any psl team as 21th pkayer as he has potential to rise quickly to top like his paksitan u-19 and Rawalpindi team mate shadab khan

I think talent wise , last U19 WC batch was the best we have had since long time. Shadab, Zeeshan , Badar , Mohsin , Masood, Sameen all are brilliant.
But what is disgusting is that Masood is batting at 9. He needs to be given chances higher up the order for developing him and also to better the chances of win. He scored at 140+ sr while Fawad and Iftikhar had already lost the match upfront with pathetic SRs

Any footage of his 50* innings ?

Now ideally Pakistan should look past Rizwan, Kamran, Adnan & Umar Akmal as keepers in all the formats.

Rehan Afridi, Saifullah Bangash should be backup options in Test Cricket.

While Umair Masood & Rohail Nazir should be considered as backup options for limited overs Cricket.

Personally I am excited about Umair and I think He needs to be quickly drafted in Pakistan A team.

Rohail should be nowhere near the team. He's crap. So is Bangash.

Best WK-batsman prospect in Pakistan. In two years time, he should be in all the teams as Sarfaraz's replacement on the bench.

Lahore qalander doesn't have a good wicket keeper , umar akmal will be keeling for them

so i would advise lahore to have umair masood in theor squad as they keep going with slogans we wiol develop talent so here is a chance you have a talent in hand develop him

Misbah's influence (& probably Tape-ball grooming) is quite evident in that clip (last 100+ runs when Umair started innings) - I could count ONE shot through off side, a squire cut by Ifti on a rank long-hop. Each & every shot, even to balls pitched a feet outside off are dragged to on side, some of them were sliced to mid off (to be recorded as off-side scores), but each one is a bottom handed swing. I wonder what PAK domestic batting coaches teach!!!!!!

MMHS nothing special n masood innings.I think you were saying he is good but may be due to requiring rate but he was very unbalanced while playing his strokes. And what abot Ahmad Bashir?

Good, if he is within 1/2 years of his registered age of 22 - can learn few tricks. I am sure guy can add some pace with proper training & guidence, but he won't have much time to add bowling skills & stamina if it's like 5 years.

Hopefully Pindi produce some decent batting wickets this time around. Not the ideal place for budding young batsmen to be playing if they want to get noticed. Recent years have seen some pathetic pitches.

Should be included in squads for upcoming A tours

Unfortunately I don't think he will. The selectors have no idea about him. Mohammad Hasan or Rizwan will get the A team gig.

Where is that Saeed Bin Nasir? He used to be Yasir Shah of domestic batting.

Yeah, I feel the same, but hoping for the best

There is actually a chance.

From what I have heard, one of the reasons the management don't select a reserve keeper in the main squad is they would prefer to develop a young talent.

Umair Masood would be the most obvious choice, and he took place in last year's NCA Camp too.

Why can't NCA and Selectors give Instructions to regional or departmental teams wrt future prospects

Since the Under 19 WC how many FC and List A matches have been played in Pakistan ?

I doubt if Umair has played 50 % of those matches.

He gets 2-3 matches and than gets benched for next 5 matches. What sort of player development is this ?

Do we expect insecure players low on confidence to shine in terms of Stats ? You need consistent proper chances.

I beg to question Sabeeh Azhar the pindi coach as to what Umair Masood was doing in lower order ?

Atleast in a T20 game give him oppurtunity in Top 6 for 3-4 matches on the Trott and than judge his performances. Otherwise there is no need to pick him in a draft system.

I saw him play a gutsy 20 odd knock in a domestic T20 tournament last year where he showed his shot range and timing skillset which was impressive.

Give the guy proper oppurtunities.

Sarfraz is not even fit to carry this kid’s kit bag.

What. An. Innings :14: In a world cup QF too.

Came in when the top order failed, just like the senior side.

But unlike the senior batsmen, he got busy. Got stuck in ASAP and played a world class, international standard innings to rescue a sinking Titanic known as the Pak batting order to the shore.

Have we finally found him? Have we finally found THAT batsman? Who is temperamentally strong to score hundreds at will and rescue our team from imminent defeat.

Am very proud of this kid. Take a bow son. Best 100 of the tournament? Selectors need to take note ASAP. Insh Allah we will see something just as epic next year in England.

Didn't even take off his helmet unlike our ****** seniors who do so after a mere 50.

Suleiman its time to introduce him to limited overs international cricket immediately.

This WC innings aswell as one domestic List A innings in a televised match was enough for me. Unlike Rizwan and Sarfraz he has shots all round the wicket and has ability to play aggressively down the order.

It’s an absolute shame to see him getting treated badly at domestic level with him getting dropped frequently aswell as getting opportunities in last few overs.

From PCB report:

Northern’s Umair Masood recorded his maiden century in first-class cricket with a brilliant 103 not out which helped his team post 247 for four at a healthy rate of five runs per over.

The 22-year-old right-handed batsman smashed nine boundaries and stitched a 142-run stand for the third wicket with Faizan Riaz, who followed his 146 in the first innings with a 70-ball 56.

Umair faced 126 balls in his undefeated stay before his captain Nauman Ali declared the innings in the evening session.

Has he got any potentional to represent pakistan what's the likely good of him taking his career further

Very hard to predict in Pakistan cricket where u need backing. I feel he has great potential and can represent Pakistan 🇵🇰 if he has a few strong seasons in domestic. He looking a million dollar in under 19 world cup but lack of opportunities in domestic stagnated his progress like many before him

Been following him from his U-19 world cup days, where displayed technique and temperament required to shine in international cricket against then world championships west indies in semi finals. He striked me as a most promising player from a batch which had players like Shadab, Zeeshan, saif Badar in it.

His case is like most of young Pakistani batsmen who instead of kicking on after displaying such promise in an international age group tournament got stagnant and lost some of his valuable play time in his transitional years probably either due to lack of connections or sheer incompetence of local coaches to scout and nurture proper talent. In this case it's more of former than later. He has been given very few chances in domestic cricket after U-19 WC, but batted mostly as a lower order batsmen, sometimes as a tailender behind Sohail tanvir! Exactly what shouldn't be done during his development stage, but in Pakistan cricket it's a common theme.

Only in this season, he gets to play regularly without the threat of getting dropped because of eventual failure due in two or three matches due to his inexperience and naivety of youth. Even rohail got ahead of him in pecking order and him departing to New Zealand is reason for Umair to get selected, but credit should be gown to Mohammed Wasim for persistently playing him in his natural position than just forcefitting him in line up as a specialist Wicket keeper and also Wasim could have went with experienced options like Jamal Anwar, but he has a vision of a good coach who can think long term instead of every other normal domestic coaches. Umair needs to play consistent cricket to fine tune his already good technique and temperament to eventually learn from mistakes to make successful career.

For PCT with very less WK option, they cannot afford to waste his career like every other gifted players. IMO, he's the best out of all WK options currently who can act as a competition to Rizwan long term. Hope he succeeds in international cricket because he has requisite skills to succeed and it will be on him and coaches to make it happen in international arena.
