Umar Akmal fails fitness test again and may lose place in CT 2017 squad

Pakistan national team chief selector Inzamamul Haq on Monday said left-handed batsmen Umar Amin and Haris Sohail were being considered to replace middle-order batsman Umar Akmal in the Champions Trophy squad.

Umar was on Sunday sent back to Pakistan after failing two fitness tests during the eight-team tournament’s preparation camp in Birmingham.

“Amin and Haris have performed well in the domestic circuit and that is why their names are under consideration to replace Umar,” said Inzamam as quoted by Express News.

Inzamam then advised Umar to focus more on his fitness.

“Umar was not able to pass two fitness tests so he is being sent back from England,” said Inzamam. “He needs to focus more on his fitness now.”

Inzamam also revealed that Umar was “fit before the Pakistan Cup”.

Can they "consider" a bit quicker as this is hardly ideal prep for an ICC tournament. The replacement needs time to get settled.

An inquiry is needed as to how Umar Akmal could be judged fit at the NCA before the Pakistan Cup, fly on a plane to England and be found unfit.

There's a video on YouTube of them doing the fitness test. You can clearly see Umar was getting winded.

If he is unwilling to take the Pakistan team seriously then good riddance.

Not making any excuses and don't know how much effort Umar put in but I think it was always unlikely that he was going to pass this test because he did not have enough time to train and assuming he did lose weight at a drastic rate then it may not have been healthy; you do not want a weight drained cricketer. His selection is strange on so many levels. Maybe they never intended to have him in the CT but selected him anyway to keep a spot open to bring in someone else, it saves the trouble from forging an injury; maybe they would do that anyway and wanted to keep two spots open :yk #InziTheRevolutionary :uak

PCB should name his replacement quickly fly him over to Birmingham .... to give him time to adjust to new conditions....

Inzamam on May 21:

"Umar was fit before the Pakistan Cup”

Inzamam on March 15:

"Umar Akmal could not pass the fitness test (for the WI tour)"

The squads for the Pakistan Cup were announced on March 21, six days after Inzamam revealed that Umar had failed the fitness test. The trainers at the NCA must be graduates from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry for making Umar fit for the Pakistan Cup in a matter of days.

In addition, considering his rubbish performance in the Pakistan Cup as well as the fact that he has now failed the fitness test shows that he was never fit for the Pakistan Cup in the first place.

Inzamam continues to get exposed for his incompetence, dishonesty and double-standards. Revolutionary should be sacked with immediate effect.

Inzi bhai should just resign.

And how will they explain this to ICC, does failing fitness test go under the injury category?

Amazing how a professional cricketer can fail these peanut tests. He should see a doctor and have a full medical check up. Could be something serious he is ignoring.

PCB put up a video of the yoyo intermittent test on youtube.

Umar Akmal seems to have performed miserably. It appears he hasnt passed levels 15.7-15.8 which is really dissapointing.

i did a bit of research on the test and acceptable levels for athletes and even a recreational player should reach up to 16.3-16.5. have attached the link below.

Imad wasim also appears to be struggling but shocking from Umar Akmal.

Can you tell me the other names of the players that running...

I can see Imad Wasim, Babar Azam, Junaid Khan, Umar Akmal

Umar Akmal or Aamer Yamin at #6 > Haris Sohail at #6.

If Harris Sohail played, he should either open or play #4(#3 is for Babar), he is not slogger to play at #6. I think opening is best spot for him. He plays pace well, can play shots against quality seamers at decent rate.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry at the PCB releasing footage from the fitness test just to shame Umar Akmal but of course it was filmed vertically...

All I know is I'll be getting plenty of use out of this

Humiliating stuff for Akmal. Hope he takes it the right way and comes back fitter and stronger as opposed to making excuses or throwing his toys out of the pram.

How can anyone call Umar unfit, look at that chiseled upper body in this latest pic!

Only if they allowed him to wear that jacket during try outs!

Umar Akmal should never ever be picked again to represent Pakistan again..... a disgrace to athletes in the world

It's pathetic. They get paid to be an athlete. Its not rocket science to manage diet and exercise. Its a basic human function. Can just imagine them losing steam after 20 balls and slogging to a deep field.

NCA’s fitness methods questioned in Umar Akmal row

LAHORE: Doubts are being raised over the standard of fitness tests conducted at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in the wake of the abrupt return of temperamental batsman Umar Akmal who has been sent back from England after failing the fitness requirements.

The controversial decision by the team management in England has created differences between the national selection committee headed by Inzamam-ul-Haq and Pakistan head coach Mickey Arthur as the team management has requested for replacement before the start of the ICC Champions Trophy.

Umar had been picked in the 15-man squad for the 50-over competition which begins at three venues in England from June 1. But having failed the test carried out during Pakistan’s training session in Birmingham, the selectors have asked ever reliable Haris Sohail, young Umar Amin and Asif Zakir to report at the NCA to prove their fitness.

Umar had initially failed the fitness during the short conditioning camp in Lahore and was not considered for the West Indies tour which followed. However, the controversial player was declared fit by Dr Saboor at the NCA and the selectors promptly recalled him for the Champions Trophy.

But Dawn learnt that Arthur, who was in the Caribbean when the tests were conducted at the NCA, expressed his dissatisfaction when heard that Umar had cleared the tests and ordered Grant Luden, the Pakistan team trainer, to take a second fitness test after Umar arrived in England.

According to insiders, Dr Saboor conducted in presence of chief selector Inzamam, who was keen to pick Umar for the Champions Trophy regardless of his modest returns in the recent Pakistan Cup held at Rawalpindi during which Umar mustered 113 runs.

Moreover, Umar found embroiled in unnecessary controversy while leading Punjab when he told a TV anchor that he had no idea why fast bowler Junaid Khan was absent from a Pakistan Cup fixture. Hearing this Junaid, who revealed in a tweet that food poisoning confined him to the team’s hotel, expressed his displeasure over Umar’s remarks.

After an inquiry, both Umar and Junaid, who is also member of the Champions Trophy squad, were put on probation and warned to behave or face a month-long ban.

The latest Umar Akmal episode could lead to direct confrontation between Inzamam and Arthur.

The question is, why did Inzamam select him in the first place? As Chief Selector, the fact that a unfit player got selected for a tournament on his behest reflects very poorly on him. He has been a disaster in this role. Same as he was as captain - no vision, double-standards, and loyal to his friends.

"vo acha player hay maazi main acha khaila hay aur hum sub ko chance dena chatay hain." say it in an inzi style voice..

There should be a ban on these players from playing any top-level domestic cricket if they can't pass the fitness test. Keep it simple for these simple-minded players.

Just out of curiosity can someone post the dates of those last 7 failed tests so that we can build a timeline of his complacency and irresponsible attitude towards fitness?
