ISLAMABAD: Around 44.7% of Pakistan’s population is now considered to be living below the poverty line, according to the World Bank’s newly updated global poverty threshold set at $4.20 per person per day and released this week.

Christina Wieser, senior economist at the World Bank and Tobias Haque, lead country economist for World Bank Pakistan, told media on Thursday the Bank was updating its global poverty lines to reflect changes in the cost of living and consumption habits of people around the world based on newly available data.

As price levels and the cost of basic needs across the world and within income groups evolve, global poverty lines are periodically updated to allow for global comparisons, Wieser said.

The new poverty lines are $3 per person per day for low-income countries (LIC), $4.20 for lower-middle-income countries (LMIC) and $8.30 for upper-middle-income countries (UMIC.)

Pakistan, with a population of over 240 million, is considered a lower-middle-income nation.

“The revisions help position Pakistan’s poverty levels in a global context and underscore the importance of continued efforts to reduce vulnerability and improve resilience,” World Bank Country Director for Pakistan Najy Benhassine told media.

“The new figures reflect updated international thresholds and improved data from other countries, not a deterioration in living standards.”

As a lower-middle-income country, Pakistan’s new poverty statistics reveal that the extreme poverty line, now at $3 per person per day, applies to 16.5% of its population, a substantial increase from 4.9% under the previous $2.15 benchmark.

The upper-middle-income poverty line, established at $8.30 per person per day, applies to 88.4% of the country’s population.

As per the new poverty threshold, more than 107.95 million people in Pakistan are living below the poverty line, earning less than Rs1,200 a day, while more than 39.8 million people are included in the extreme poverty category.

The updated figures are part of the World Bank’s Global Poverty June Update 2025, an initiative aimed at enhancing the precision and relevance of global poverty assessments.

I hope Pakistanis don't blame BJP/Modi/Hindutva for this as well.

I hope Pakistanis don't blame BJP/Modi/Hindutva for this as well.
Pak govt strives for Azerbaijan, Nigeria, Egypt, Malaysia, Turkey etc .They hope and live for the ummah and its sovereignty. They don't care about pak poor citizens who are nothing but minor pieces in a larger game.so the same goes for its well settled citizens.

Most Pakistanis active on this forum seem to come from relatively well-off backgrounds. But let’s be honest — they do not represent the real Pakistan, where nearly 44% of the population lives below the poverty line. There’s no shame in poverty; in 1947, the entire subcontinent lead by India was gripped by mass deprivation and hunger. A whole lot malnourished miserably looking people coming out of generations of slavery.

India chose to confront this reality head-on. It never shied away from acknowledging its poverty on the world stage. In fact it treated that acknowledgment as the first step toward reform. Over the decades by focusing on strengthening democratic institutions, India has lifted hundreds of millions out of poverty. It’s not a perfect story, but it’s one of grit and progress.

Pakistan, by contrast, has often preferred to maintain a superficial image, sidestepping the core issues faced by its people. Instead of addressing structural problems, there has been a tendency to deflect, deny, or distract often through emotional nationalism or anti-India posturing.

Even in politics, the figures projected as national leaders like Maryam Nawaz or Bilawal Bhutto are products of elite dynasties who do not even try to at least artificially present themselves as a common Pakistani and are far removed from the common citizen. In a democratic and competitive political environment like India’s, they would likely struggle to survive even a year.

More concerning is that Pakistan has repeatedly chosen to harm its relationship with India, a rising economic and technological power at the behest of foreign interests who have little concern for Pakistan’s long-term well-being. Time and again, external patrons have used Pakistan as a geopolitical pawn, fuelling hostility, undermining peace efforts, and perpetuating a cycle of dependence and instability.

India has extended olive branches, honored treaties, and opened economic avenues including in trade and people-to-people contact. But goodwill cannot thrive in the face of constant provocation, proxy conflicts, and misplaced priorities.

It’s time for honest introspection in Pakistan not for India’s sake, but for the future of its own people. A stable, cooperative South Asia benefits everyone. But that requires courage to face uncomfortable truths, and the will to rise above narrow agendas.

Don't really understand this comment other than jealous that these countries have a good relationship with Pak even when during war ops while nobody stood with you except your genocider friends..birds of a feather..

With regards to the news. Well its not a surprise. When oligarchs and corrupt jealous generals take over their primary concern is their own constituents..none of which are the common people..the person who did think about them is in jail..

Root causes of this pitiful existence are a handful, namely gross overpopulation and inordinate waste on religious causes.

Recently families took out loans to buy sacrificial bakras. A decade or so ago our "kaam wali maasi" drained money we gave her as gift to do umrah. Then she came back asking more for her 3rd daughter's wedding.

Suffice to say, her daughter is now also mother to 4 kids since then. My mum until she passed away took care for her newborns' upkeep.

It's nonsensical how some people never grow out of the cesspool they are born in.

Happens in all nations, not just here..

Amusing you only ever poke you head up with anti national narrative, you seem to get lost in action in neighbours mischief mishaps thread.

Your not an ICU nurse by any chance..??!

injians are an outside threat. Minimalist in nature. Like the joos.

Our pak nation is afflicted more with poison from the inside.

A vicious rot from arabic religion. That nobody understands. Yet kills blindly for and/or self-harms.

Internal poison…external enabler

india republick not despised just misguided mandir students parading as others..

joos..?!? explains everything

It is far too high.

India has done quite well bringing down their poverty to around 30%.

Although (for both countries) I'm not too sure what the measurement in dollars is on the on ground conditions.

Without a doubt although poverty exists and is so very obviously visible some more appropriate metrics would be helpful to understand the ground conditions.

It's a continuous policy of failure. Any time establishment is in power not the govts.so i don't see any difference. Even in that period (after 2017 as per world bank) imran was pm for 3.5 years

An India Pakistan who are friends rather than enemies will be beyond anything in this planet, both countries would prosper at unprecedented levels.

But

Some things are just not meant to be..

Yep Pakistani people never understood or apply the religion correctly and hence they are in doom state.

If you want to apply the religion correctly then implement justice and equality from the leadership and actual nizam of zakat which if implemented correctly will solve the wealth distribution in any nation. I can even provide mathematical analysis if someone is interested.

Yes please provide the mathematical analysis in how 2.5% tax is going to make you into a welfare state like any of the Northern European countries.

Which country has understood and applied Islam correctly?

It will benefit Pakistan but don't see how it will benefit India beyond the security and China angle

Current Collection (Rs 619 B)$544.0%0.4%100 years (too slow)
Full Potential (Rs 2,743 B)$21616.2%1.62%~25 years
With Better Programs (e = 0.2)$21616.2%3.24%~12 years

✅ Final Conclusion

If Pakistan collects its full zakat potential (about $22 billion per year) and distributes it efficiently to the poorest 40%, it could:
  • Boost poor individuals' income by 16.2% of the poverty line
  • Reduce poverty by 1.62% per year
  • Eradicate poverty in 25 years — or faster (12 years) with better targeting and program design.
Zakat, if professionally managed and transparently distributed, is not just charity — it’s a mathematically sound poverty eradication system

Lets not get ahead of ourselves and go back to and #1, #2 and #3..
#1 - You worked out from superficial basis that 101.6 million are zakat eligible. Ok let's take that as true, how many are Zakat payable? As in how many people who pass the threshold of having to pay zakat.
#2 - Explain the basis and source of the Zakat potential figure you used?
#3 - Per-Poor Individual Zakat=21.94×109101.6×106 . Ok I get the 21.94 is the zakat potential figure, what are the other two?

This is for "extreme" poverty. The actual poverty figure is around 30% but isn't mentioned in any of the articles from Indian media .....

Pakistan has 16% in comparison extreme poverty.

The report mentions that India’s poverty rate at the 3.65 dollars per day line fell from 61.8 percent in 2011-12 to 28.1 percent in 2022-23, lifting 378 million people out of poverty.

We are looking at more poor people than the whole of the population of Pakistan.

India is stepping in the right direction on paper. Any steps to lift people out of suffering should be commended but please prepare better if you want to engage in cheap trolling.

People accusing me of searching anything bad on Google everyday about Pakistan and posting it on PP, are you serious? :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

BJP, Modi, Hindutva rings a bell?

Pot calling the kettle black.

Bro I used very conservative numbers and I am pretty sure that not 30% of pak population deserve zakat and ofcourse the full potential zakat is way more than what I assumed because there are lots of millionaires in pak who hide their wealth and doesn’t pay zakat.

This is based on very conservative numbers.

I am asking where did you bring the numbers from? You plucked a potential Zakat figure from somewhere, then multiplied by two random firgures to get to per person Zakat. You have to explain where the figures come from. Otherwise it is just meaningless number generation.

Poverty is no laughing matter. The ones that went through it or currently languishing in it know it. Huge population and growing at rapid pace will ensure that poverty is there to stay for the coming years. Only Abundance brought by Artificial Intelligence can provide relief to these poor people.

Google is your friend, search and verify the numbers I used , yes I used educated assumptions as well.

So I have to provide evidence for numbers you have used? What kind of mathematical model is this? It is your model, not mine!! If it was my model, I would have told you where the numbers come from.

You haven't provided how you derived the potential Zakat number and I don't know what these two numbers are - 109101.6×106. Without saying what these two numbers are, your model is nonsensical.

Do you understand the concept of providing evidence for the case you present and then be open for it to be critiqued?

In India The Extreme Poverty Rate Drops To 5.3% From 27.1%, Where Else In Pakistan's The Extreme Poverty Jumps To 16.5% From 4.9%.

Indian trajectory is on positive side while Pakistan is downward .

I don't think you can measure this properly while Pakistan is still a heavily cash based society. Even beggars are sitting on cash piles in many locales. Living standards will only really be judged when we see wealth being spent on infrastructure and slums being cleaned up.

India's deeply hierarchical culture, in both caste and class, isn't just tradition, it's a feature, not a flaw, for many. The word “Saar” isn't just respect, it's a ritual of submission. The slums? They're not seen as a problem to solve, but a contrast to maintain. It's not merely societal conditioning, it's a religiously reinforced pecking order, where superiority isn't earned, it's inherited.

With this poverty, decadence rules roost.

In karachi, streets are filled with orphans begging for alms. These kids are then sexually abused by filthy rich and brainwashed by goddamn mullahs.

It's literally a dog eat rat world out here.

DW report reveals a rather gloomy situation of Pakistan.

According to the World Bank, nearly 45% of Pakistan’s population lives in poverty.

This situation shows itself during Ramadan season every year as prices often rise due to massive demand and with inflation still high, it is hard for many to even afford a balanced iftar meal.

During this time hundreds of people are often seeing waiting impatiently in queues to take home a box of essential rations from generous donators.

Pakistan is said to have experienced one of Asia’s highest inflation spikes in 2023, nearing 40%.

Imran khan left the country on verge of default

Remeber the pti lot were jumping up and down doing bhangra and celebrating that pakistan is going to go default

Thanks to plmn the country is going the right direction again.

I do agree that under Khan saheb also, the nation didn’t make much progress. In fact many people allege that it went backwards and many problems of now might be a result of that.

Out of 79 yrs of Pakistan, IK ruled for 3.5 yrs yet he is to blame, rest of all 76 yrs are golden era

@emranabbas , Dont enter this before after stuff do you know much commodities price in Pakistan has increased in last 3 yrs , its a disaster even farmers and agriculture sector is ruined

World bank is random guy???

Still watching with closed eyes bro.... Come on

Where is the source from World Bank?

Just because some random guy said it in twitter its true 😂😂

Dare you to post pakistan poverty rate from 2013 to now and see the whole picture

Who is the source some random guy on X

This is how pti fool you people with this sort of propaganda

You keep repeating PMLN propaganda, yet it doesn’t even sound like you believe it yourself. That’s the reality of what many regard as a Form 47 setup, an illegal and unconstitutional government under Pakistan’s constitution.

New plane for Plastic Nani, applause from @emranabbas, and rising poverty for everyone else, at least someone’s economy is clearly taking off. 😆

You want poverty stats from 2013 till now? Funny, because the only thing rising faster than those numbers seems to be PML N government luxury purchases and number of plastic surgeries in country that has poverty level at 45%.

Give me full list year by year if dont want to because it exposes pti then you can shut up and move on

Where is the full list from 2013 to 2026?

Stop hiding now because it exposes pti

Anyone can use a selective year and spread their propaganda that only idiots fall for

😂 😂😂😂😂😂

PTI understood austerity, no new plastic face, sharpie drawn eyebrows, and no new jet. Meanwhile PMLN seems to believe economic recovery starts with cosmetic upgrades and aircraft purchases. Hope Basant looked nice from Great Britain.

Emmy bhai is asking some real questions but rather than getting answers he’s getting attacked simply because he chooses Army over Imran Khan. That’s his personal choice.

He’s been educated but ignores his free schooling .

Under this regime Pakistan has doubled its debt . Prices have more than doubled for most produce or services . This guy hasn’t even been to Pakistan since nappy days . He doesn’t care , only supporting corruption because he was born out of it .

they have no answer so they resort to going personal or they try to derail the thread or go off topic its very normal with PTI supporters.

they are now shitting to post the poverty line from 2013-2026 because it exposes them badly

before PLMN came in power poverty line was 36.3% and when PLMN left it was on 21%

when Imran khan left he left us with a country that was on verge of default

current government is cleaning the mess Imran khan left us with will take time but plmn will we clear it.

Punjab is doing well so no need to have a dig at CM of Punjab

its your terrorists in KPK and balochistan that are suffering so what has the PTI government done in KPK?

why are people from KPK running to Punjab for education and work?

something you need to answer and don't run away

what has sohail afridi or amin gandupur done in kpk? all they been doing is running around to get imran khan released :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:
