ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Minister for Education and Professional Training Shafqat Mehmood has said efforts are underway to implement uniform curriculum in the entire country after revising it according the needs. He said un-registered seminaries would not be allowed to function. Similarly, registration of those Madaris would be cancelled, which fail to comply with conditions of registration.

Addressing a news conference in Islamabad on Thursday, he said a consensus has reached during a meeting with Tanzeemat-e-Madaris over registration of the religious seminaries under the pre-decided conditions and to stop the spread of religious hatred.

The Minister said these efforts are being made to streamline the religious seminaries while keeping them independent. He said the government will not interfere in the internal matters of the Madaris but they will be brought in the mainstream through a process of registration.

Shafqat Mehmood said the Ministry of Education will open twelve regional offices across the country, which will assist Madaris in various areas including imparting technical and vocational training.

The Minister said it has also been decided in the meeting that the Madaris will teach contemporary subjects of the relevant boards and the examination of these subjects will be conducted by the Federal Board.

He said the Madrassah students will be awarded certificate by the Federal Board, which will be acceptable at every forum.

Shafqat Mehmood said a department for the religious education will also be established at the Federal Board to facilitate Madaris.

He appreciated the Madaris for imparting free and quality education to deserving children and said that the Madaris are doing a national service by assisting the state and the government in imparting education to students like private schools.

He said the Chief of the Army Staff Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa and the state institutions played an important role in developing the consensus.

Excellent move. There will likely be opposition to this as well from the ultra religious factions.

Current government with all its faults, is still making the tough calls like bringing businesses into the tax net.

Previous governments were more concerned about saving their vote bank then saving the country.

Hopefully Pakistanis realize the hard choices PTI has made for the betterment of the future of Pakistan.

This is a great move but our media is too busy in defending corrupts instead of discussing these moves

Didn't Musharraf try this in the early 2000s? Will Imran succeed where the General failed?

Islamic clerics in Pakistan have launched a campaign of resistance against a government crackdown on religious schools.

They are furious that President Pervez Musharraf is attempting to staunch the flow of "terrorist recruits" by regulating the schools, known as madrassas.

There are up to 20,000 such schools in Pakistan and until now the state has had no control over them. The government is now insisting that they should be registered and teach secular subjects.

I hope someone like Maulana Fazal ur Rehman don't come up with a drama to spoil this. Minister of Education tweeted earlier:

Should also introduce a mandatory training workshop for Madrasah teachers with a test compulsory to pass after workshops. Make the teachers read stuff beyond religious material and it can teach them about interdependency of religious and social cultures.

Unfortunately most of them believe that religious culture is independent from, and must always dominate, social cultures. And that's incorrect.

There is a difference. Musharref was a sharaab drinking, dog loving, womanising , secular..

Khan through his charity work and open statements of belief has a totally different profile. He can take on teh religious establishment on their own turf. Mushy was seen as a Godless murtad..(infidel)..hence why he could never do it..he also made no bones about admiring people like Attaturk..

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Friday said it has agreed with the country´s clergy to introduce reforms in madrassa religious schools to bring them in line with conventional schools, curbing hate speech and extremist narratives.

The announcement came just before Prime Minister Imran Khan´s visit to Washington for a Monday meeting with President Donald Trump.

The government will register more than 30,000 madrassas, which will teach subjects like English, mathematics and science, Federal Minister for Education and Professional Training Shafqat Mehmood said.

He said the government will conduct their exams and is aiming for a first batch next June, although that is not a firm goal.

"There will be no preaching of hate speech against any religion or sect," the minister said.

"We will look at their curriculum to see there is no hatred against any sect or faith," he added.

Pakistan pledged to crack down on religious seminaries suspected of fostering extremism following a school massacre by the Taliban in December 2014 that left more than 130 children dead, but the move faces stiff resistance from conservatives.

Madrassa reforms attempted by the past governments have failed due to pressure from the clergy.
