A Muslim woman who refused to accept triple talaq from her husband over the phone was attacked with acid on Saturday allegedly by her in-laws in Neuria area of Pilibhit in Uttar Pradesh.

According to a report in The Times of India, the victim Rehana Hussain, who is in her 40s, married her husband Matlub 18 years ago. Rehana and Matlub moved to the United States, but the marriage soon soured.

Is Triple Talaq valid in Pakistan? Is it legal in Islam and Sharia?

Such a bizarre question only betrays your Hindutva agenda. Shouldn't the relevant question here be: is attacking a woman who asks for divorce with acid legal in Islam or Shariah? While I get the triple talaq issue is a topic that needs addressing, the real question here should be why it's seen as okay to throw acid at a woman who asks for divorce.

Here is my theory. In the Indian subcontinent, divorce isn't seen as acceptable in Hindu culture which has prevailed in the past few centuries. Women were expected to throw themselves on the funeral pyre of their husbands upon their deaths, and the burning by acid is a chilling echo of this tradition.

In Pakistan there is evidence everywhere that many cling onto some of the uglier misogynist traditions that still linger from the culture prevalent to the region as a whole. It would be appropriate if we could focus on the victims rather than raise threads to score points against the other religion rather than look at root causes.
