The Melbourne Renegades have completed their KFC BBL|08 playing roster with the signing of international bowlers Usman Khan Shinwari and Harry Gurney.

Shinwari is a 24 year-old left arm quick from Pakistan who has played at ODI and T20I level, including last month’s T20I series against Australia. He will play the first seven matches of the season before Gurney arrives to replace him.

Gurney, 32, is also a left arm seam bowler who played ODI and T20I cricket for England and currently plays for Nottinghamshire.

“I have watched the Big Bash with interest in recent years and I’ve been impressed with the quality of the competition,” Shinwari said.

“I’m hoping I can bring something different to the team with my bowling and help the Renegades push for success.”

Gurney made his England debut in 2014 and has played 12 matches for his country. He also played alongside fellow Renegades recruit Dan Christian last winter.

“Dan spoke very positively about the competition so to get an opportunity to come and play with the Renegades is something I’m really grateful for,” Gurney said.

“I’ve had a fair bit of experience in T20 cricket in England so I’m really excited to test myself in Australian conditions.

“I have admired the BBL from afar for a few years and am thrilled to get an opportunity to play in the comp.

“There is plenty of talent in the Renegades squad so hopefully I can come in and play my role for the team and help us have a strong season.”

Renegades Coach Andrew McDonald said the signings of Gurney and Shinwari balances out the playing list.

“We wanted to add in a left arm seam option to provide some added variation to our attack and Harry and Usman will certainly provide that,” McDonald said.

“They’ll complement our bowling unit really well and give us plenty of options throughout the innings.

“In the last few months we’ve been able to add in some established Big Bash players in Dan Christian and Cameron Boyce, some exciting international talent and some really promising young players.

“We’ve also been able to retain the bulk of last season’s squad so competition for spots in the final XI will be fierce.”

Renegades BBL squad: Aaron Finch (Capt.), Cameron Boyce, Dan Christian, Tom Cooper, Zak Evans, Marcus Harris, Mackenzie Harvey, Jon Holland, Usman Khan Shinwari, Tim Ludeman, Joe Mennie, Mohammad Nabi, Kane Richardson, Will Sutherland, Chris Tremain, Beau Webster, Cameron White, Jack Wildermuth.

In: Cameron Boyce, Dan Christian, Zak Evans, Mackenzie Harvey, Usman Khan Shinwari*, Will Sutherland

Out: Brad Hodge (retired), Matt Short (Strikers), Brad Hogg, Guy Walker (AFL), Dwayne Bravo, James Pattinson (Heat)

* Harry Gurney replaces Usman Khan Shinwari for second half of season

I really REALLY REALLY did not see that coming. But I don't have any problem with it. I still remember earlier this year when there were rumors about Shaheen Shah Afridi getting offered a big bash contract.

BBL always have the worst international contingent, I wonder why but it is still so exciting due to homegrown talent and production quality.

Renegades coach and management wanted a left-arm pacer. And who else country to look at first other than Pakistan. And with other Pakistani players selected against South Africa Test Series. UKS is perhaps the only current international left-arm Pakistan pacer left :wa

Bad pick , he is going to get hammered with his 130s km type bowling on Australian pitches.Even wahab would have been a better choice in Australia .

well that is very random!

He is gonna get clobbered on those flat tracks with his 130k deliveries

Could be an inspired pick. His ability has never been in doubt. Only things holding him back are his injuries and his temperament. I still remember him choking against Lahore Qalandars in the PSL. He has a tendency to overstep and go for runs when under pressure. But he can also bowl some deadly yorkers and swing the ball.

If ability was the only factor, he would've been opening the bowling for the test team by now.

What a lit picture! Hope he gives a good performance

Renegades coach and management wanted a left-arm pacer. And who else country to look at first other than Pakistan. And with other Pakistani players selected against South Africa Test Series. UKS is perhaps the only current international left-arm Pakistan pacer left :wa

Nope he isn't the only one left, there are Junaid Khan, Mohammad Irfan, Sohail Tanvir, Wahab Riaz, Rahat Ali and Mir Hamza still in Pakistan.

Good for him.

But not for the BBL team. Gonna get carted for fun.

M Irfan, S Tanvir, W Riaz and R Ali aren't in current Pakistani team's plan. Mir Hamza is not a T20 bowler. So technically only UKS and J Khan left

Bowling fairly well so far. Highest speed so far of 140.2kph. But averaging around the mid 130s.

uks performance (so far) is proof that the standard of bowling in the psl is pretty good.

Watching the highlights now and while he bowled very good, he dropped an absolute sitter of his own bowling, so he could have had 3 wickets!! Happy for him overall, good his team won but seriously, if that dropped catch cost his team the game then he would deserve a lot of blame, a 3 year old would have caught it.

So what exactly proves he's a bad bowler?

He's started quite well in ODIs... not sure why he's incorrectly perceived as a trundler who lacks impact. In fact, he already has a 5 w/h in just 9 ODIs. Mohammad Amir on the other hand...

Except majority of those ODI's were against SL/Zimbabwe. Apart from the Hong Kong game, he was disappointing in the Asia Cup, which was a shame as I had high hopes from him. Still though, small sample size, I hope he can do better in the bigger games in the future!

Our whole team flopped in that tournament; can't be too critical of him so early in his career considering he only played two matches in the Asia Cup apart from that Hong Kong game you mentioned.

Yeah I know, that's what I was saying, it's a small sample size to say he's a minnow basher, let's see how he does against better teams when given a longer run!

Agreed. He's only played 9 ODIs, and I really hope the selectors haven't decided to discard him based on a couple of games, as that would severely dent his confidence.

I don't think he'll be dropped from the squad altogether, but he didn't make the XI for the NZ series as SSA, Hasan Ali and Faheem were all preferred over him. He might have to contend with a bit part role, but I can't see him being dropped from the ODI/T20I squad altogether for a while

Good to see him starting well. Did't look great in the Asia cup but then only Junaid and Shaheen looked good.

So, one batsman's and one tailenders wicket. Others dismantled the batting lineup. Was expecting better tbh.

Hilton Cartwright is not a tail ender. He is a genuine batsman. If a bowler picks up 2 wickets and goes for 4RPO and you still are not happy with his performance then you will never ever be happy with his performances.

So, one batsman's and one tailenders wicket. Others dismantled the batting lineup. Was expecting better tbh.

These highlights were very short, if you watch the full spell, you would see he bowled superbly, was beating the batsmen repeatedly, and he was bowling in the powerplay, was a fine spell of fast bowling. Faultless. Apart from that sitter he dropped, but a great performance, and deservedly MOM

Cartwright is not a tailender. He almost had Klinger as well.

You said he will 'get carted for fun'. :najam

I'm happy he has done well in his first game. Might continue to do good, because of that left arm + novelty factor and against their domestic batsmen.

But, I do think he won't do as good in the long term.

Ha ha ha

How many years before you grow up?

Why are you so worried about that? :najam

Good to hear that. May it continue.

Top of off with that zip!

Tidy spell of 1 for 17 from 4 overs today.

Never understood why guys like Shinwari, Junaid never got a chance in tests under Mickey Arthur. They usually bowl more on the spot deliveries compared to Amir, Hasan.

When fit Usman is close to Umar Gul's golden years. Not only a similar bowling action but gets the same seam movement as well then.

He would have been good in the 1st Test vs SA, I reckon, but I understand why he atm isn't considered for Tests, he is very injury prone.

Don't want him to play for Pakistan as he completely loses it under the slightest bit of pressure

We have enough mental midgets.

Pak. need him, Faheem and Junaid for LOIs vs SA and Aus. Can't have Amir, Hasan and Shaheen burn out before the WC.

Another chance to (continue to) impress in the BBL coming up for Shinwari

well that is very random!

He is gonna get clobbered on those flat tracks with his 130k deliveries

Just clocked 151kph apparently. Find it a bit hard to believe, maybe speed-gun glitch? Haven't seen him go above mid-140s previously.

We have enough mental midgets.

Although he's only been given a chance in the shorter formats, he hasn't even played 25 international matches yet and you're calling for his head.

On the other hand, the ultimate mental midget has been given 60+ Tests on the trot and is eight years older than Shinwari! Some of our fans are really the worst, most unsupportive fans a young player could ask for.

Easily Melbourne Renegade's best bowler but Cameron White's captaincy has been nothing short of PATHETIC. Defending a low score, UKS is bowling beautifully but he bowls him when the game is gone and he can't do anything. He bowled just one over in the powerplay, which is a good chance to get wickets and the only way to win a game when defending a low score is take early wickets. A schoolboy could captain better than him.

He bowls in the mid 140s consistently so I don't understand why its hard to expect 151.

Umm, no.

In the first few overs he can hit 140s.

On average he's a mid to late 130s bowler like Amir, Hasan.

Besides, pace is not everything, not good enough for intl cricket -- in the mould of Umar Gul, Junaid, Talha.

If he can be as good as peak Umar Gul, that will be very good for us! Let's not forget how good he was during his best years, yes he faded away towards the end of his international career but I reckon UKS can be good for us

Was denied a wicket when he got Ben Dunk edging the ball to wicket keeper, only for umpire to give it not out.

Not to mention its overly generous pitches! Look at how the batsman was bamboozled as the springs in the pitch made the ball accelerate after pitching!

Mate the score of 151 was chased with 2.1 overs to spare and 7 wickets in hand.
So not THAT generous.

Lol when did this trundler become a speed demon? :bumrah

In all seriousness, I would expect his pace to increase up to high 130s because in T20s you're only bowling 4 overs as opposed to 10 in ODIs. But a top speed of 146! Wow that is pace.

So assuming this is legit, since after all I wouldn't expect a developed cricket nation to adjust speed readings (just for views). This shows the gulf between the bowling coaches in Australia and the ones in Pakistan. Even the ex-Pakistan bowlers like an ATG in Waqar and LOI legend Aqib Javed are poor bowling coaches. No wonder why the former was left humiliated when he tried to apply for this role with the Australia team.

Only in Pakistan you'll not only do they take on a failed applicant for the Aussie bowling coach role but they also make him head coach not just once, but twice! Shows what a pathetic and incompetent organisation the PCB is.

Should be with the Test team.

Their injury record has something to do with it.

Shinwari is a handy bowler but sometimes lacks intelligence. Against India in the Asia Cup, Mickey Arthur was telling him to bowl wicket-to-wicket but his line was all over the place.

That wasn’t him being dumb, he just couldn’t handle the pressure. Hence his line and length was all over the place.
