Very disappointed with Shaheen Shah Afridi’s behaviour

Should get @Saj to interview Shaheen to get his perspective of this story. Can't have one of our PP legends being dissed like this, so only too right we hear SSA's viewpoint!

In all seriousness though, some players can be over sensitive, they should learn not to react to every single comment from the crowd. This was not professional behaviour from SSA.

So shaheen is a village idiot for you, but a guy sitting in UK always looking to spread racist hate is a soo called educated?

Pot kettle black. By your own admission you hate UK based Pakistanis. You also advised @Rana to keep quiet because of his beliefs. So whatever you're accusing me of is merely a reflection of yourself.

Had this really bad experience with Shaheen in the Netherlands game. I didn’t post about it then because I would rather conceal my identity and was hoping this wasn’t caught on camera by some fan making videos.

So, before the game I was lucky to be sitting in a stand where the Pak players were training right in front of us. I was very much enthusiastic to G up all the boys. I was very much appreciative of the response I got from Farhan, Nawaz, Nafay (he’s a wonderful lad), and even Naseem. I didn’t really say any hi or hello to Babar. I can’t G him up if I genuinely don’t rate him. But I’m not going to abuse or disrespect any of these guys (Babar or Rizwan) in real life.

Anyhow, the game got underway and Pakistan didn’t start of brightly with Shaheen getting pummelled around the ground. He was then fielding around my stand on the boundary for most part of the game for the rest of the game. There were some lads who were just there for banter or hoping that the cameras catch a glimpse of them. They didn’t say anything too bad to him, but they were maybe being a little bit cheeky. You could sense Shaheen was already ticking/seething within because of his opening poor spell, and maybe he was still thinking about that huge six he got hit on the roof.

Around the 14th over (if I recall) I was trying to G him up by saying “bro stay in this, we are going to bowl them out for under 150”. This is because I knew he had to bowl at the death and we needed this guy to pull through for us. I know he could do it, he could have a good closing spell where he picks up 2-3 wickets and then we’ve wrapped this up. We needed him focused. He looked at me once and I could still sense that he’s fuming…

A delivery later (a dot ball), he turned around and pointed his finger at me and then said something along the lines of “you, be quiet and go away!”

I can’t say I was hurt at this, because actually I was shocked first and then I was RAGING inside. A part of me wanted to create absolute drama by giving him a serious mouthful! Even if it lead to an altercation. Inside I’m thinking “bruv, I’m encouraging him. Why would he say that to me? Is he dense or something?”

I thought to myself, I could either make this into a drama and take this guy on, or think of the consequences…

-I would probably be kicked out of the ground and banned from all the other matches.

-Shaheen could get fined and maybe reprimanded (banned some games) for getting into a spat with a spectator. Whereas, Pakistan needs him more than my own personal ego.

I just looked at him and said “bro, I’m encouraging you. Why would you say that to me?” That’s all. He just shut up and kept biting his bottom lip.

Upon reflection, I was truly disappointed that a guy who has been given so much respect and love by Pakistan and its fans thinks it’s ok to be disrespectful even though the person is not being rude to him! The guys around me were shocked too. We didn’t make much of an issue of it.

I’m just annoyed because I genuinely like the guy. My bro @topspin knows this. It’s us guys who make these boys our heroes/stars. They should know this!

Anyhow, thought I should share this story. I was very happy when he finally got his captaincy back after Naqvi screwed him. I’m personally don’t care anymore what happens with this bloke going forward. Dil se utar gaya hai yeh!

@Slim @RidiculousMan

There is a saying .... never meet your heroes and keep a distance.... this is the perfect example as to why.

@Rana thanks for the share. Glad to hear you're enjoying the WC in Colombo. As for SSA's behaviour, he probably didn't know he was interacting with a fan and could've interpreted your encouragement as heckling. Maybe he was thinking you're making a comment on his pace and that he can't touch 150? Could've come across as that. You know how sensitive our super stars are

No I think the reports about him being a natural disruption are true. I’m not the only or the last person this guy has p*ssed off

Was satisfying to see him being humbled on the bench. I even tried to catch his attention last match with the shush sign but I don’t think it quite worked unfortunately

It might have, and he was in no position to make a fuss.

You got 1 over him :D

Moral of the story- never meet your heroes in person.

I am 💯 sure if @Rana meets Rizwan in person, he will have a different opinion as well 👍
If Rizwan meets me in person you mean?

In what world would I have the motivation to go out of my way to meet Rizwan?

I had numerous opportunities to say hello or go and meet Babar here in Colombo or even in England too.

The guy draws ZERO motivation in me to make an effort to go and say a word to him. Nothing.

I never felt this way about someone like Shahid Afridi, Shoaib Akhtar or some of the Pakistan players of that time. These guys were genuine stars.

Based on my IPL experience, Siraj, DK, and Hardik are very good, friendly at acknowledging the crowd.
Others are also good, but they rarely acknowledge the cheers.

Kohli rarely acknowledges the crowd, but I have never seen anyone as deeply involved in the game as him. He is like a religious devotee of cricket, even during the breaks between overs, he remains completely focused and involved.

Ben Stokes is like this too.

You can’t get any reaction out of him and you are risking a death stare if you try too hard with him. He is intensely invested in the match

Maybe he was told who you were, they do read these forums you know even if they say they don't, your hatred for someone who he sees as a brother could have been a massive factor. This is just my two cents

If someone who knows Shaheen knows you are Rana from this forum then this reaction to even positive words from would make a lot of sense

He would, Rizwan has helped a lot of poor families out in his neighbourhood which attests to his good character. Including helping a lady driving a Rickshaw and buying her a shop so she can not go out to the unsafe streets.

Anyone who I know that has also met Rizwan in a public setting says he is the nicest guy they have ever had the pleasure of meeting, He doesnt even let you buy him anything, infact the guy offers himself to buy your meal for you.

Everyone is allowed a cricketing opinion but this is the main reason I get so triggered seeing the hate he has for Rizwan.
There are a lot of low lives in Pakistan cricket and he directs all his venom at one of the nicest.

Am not surprised in the least by this, his bowling has regressed and he hasn’t tried to improve himself remotely and selfishly has refused to rehabilitate properly to take himself back to the top level when he had every chance to be one of Pakistan’s best ever. We can blame the board so much, but these guys were not born yesterday, you need to take personal responsibility.

With his bowling reaching all time lows & getting pasted by minnows, his attitude is even worse than his efforts.

I’ve seen & heard Akhtar being abused so much worse but he just got on with it, whether he thought @Rana said something positive or negative, his reaction is just pathetic.

Shaheen is extremely weak mentally and this just reinforces why he didn’t bowl that super-over as well.

Shaheen is the coward in this scenario, he tried to act tough from the comfort of the pitch, would he keep this energy if he walked passed me in a dark alley? Just the two of us on the street.

Shaheen should have used all this anger positively on the opposition.

Just one little dot and he got all excited.

He deserved to be dropped, a shameless cricketer really & a thoroughly mediocre human being.

To those saying we had him for a dawat & he was nice, what the hell do you expect? I’ve wined & dined with some of my worst enemies and they were well mannered, does that take away the piece of work they are for real? Shaheen showed us his true colours when the chips were down, even his own father-in-law got the baseball bat out on him.

If you said what you said in English, there’s 99.99% chance he didn’t understand what you were trying to say.

These guys are functionally illiterate so cut them some slack.

I said it to him in Urdu. I know he can’t understand English

But I responded to him in English when I said “I am encouraging you (you idiot)”. That’s when he just shut up and bit his lip.

I think normally bigger the star(As they are used to it ) more difficult to get the response.Siraj, Kuldeep,Rohit Bumrah, Jaiswal, Harshit,Irfan are always happy to respond back.Dravid , Kohli , Zaheer ,Msd, kumble are the toughest ones i saw.

Fans are the reason sportsmen have fame, adulation, and make money. But I don’t blame the players entirely.

There’s constant, relentless social pressure on cricketers in the subcontinent.

Fan after fan wanting their moment with you, wanting to talk to you, sometimes advise you, often insult or abuse.

At some stage it has to feel overwhelming, and no wonder some of them snap.

It’s always the jobbers / mentally weak that snap though.

The elite players block all the rubbish out.

His career trajectory correlates well with his reaction.

Maybe the fans should bring mitai next time and feed him after every dot ball against a minnow.

Poor leadership has impacted him big time to & his fragile ego was massaged quiet well with wedding cakes after every match under Babar/Riz.

I stand with Rana as far as his side of the story is concerned.. Shaheen Trundler's ego has become a big mountain now that needs to be bombarded back to dust...
This guy is a big advocate of quoting the stories of Prophet’s in his press conferences to justify his poor performances at times…

He should also know, God does not like those who are arrogant!
