A mob in Biswanath district of Assam on Sunday heckled and abused a Muslim man for allegedly selling beef, reports said. The man was identified as Shaukat Ali by the police.

In a video doing the rounds on social media, Ali is seen kneeling down in slush, surrounded by an irate mob, which demands to know why he was selling beef. “Do you have a license to sell beef?” the mob can be heard asking in the video.

The mob is then seen questioning Ali about his nationality. “Are you Bangladeshi? Is your name in the NRC [National Register of Citizens]?” Assam is currently updating its National Register of Citizens in a bid to identify foreigners from citizens.

The mob allegedly also forced Ali to consume pork and asked him if the market’s mahaldar, or manager, knew that he was selling beef. According to the district police, the mob then went on to misbehave with the mahaldar, Kamal Thapa, as well.

Look at the horror on face of the Man.

There was another incident reported by Sky news today. Im sure there are many.

While such people are enjoying themselves.

extrapolating current demographic trends muslims will be largest religious group in assam in a decade or two. can only see events like this becoming more prevalent.

How disgusting.

What is wrong with some people these days.

They are worse than the animals they are supposedly protecting.

Assamese and Bangladeshis are at war.

Disgusting behaviour.

No matter what religion or lack thereof you come from, this must be condemned.

Health and prosperity by throwing cow waste at each other!!!:))):))) Such things only happen in India!

Really? Using this poor man's misery to fuel your agenda? Have some shame.

What agenda!? I did not say he deserved being bullied rather that Indian Muslim's do hate Pak. Worry about our own minorities instead of pointing out the neighbours errors.

Why do these things only happen in the sub-continent?

Why do these things only happen in the sub-continent?

Perhaps a legacy of the British Raj I am afraid to say. When the Brits were putting down rebellions, they used to coat their bullets in beef fat or pig fat to add insult to injury for Hindu/Muslim insurgents.

Our Indian friends have obviously held onto that image in their psyche, hence they are forcing this man to eat pork.

I can almost understand this being done due to revulsion caused by eating meat, but how are they ok for him to eat pork

Why do these things only happen in the sub-continent?

Please don't clump Pakistan together with India on this matter, you will never find Pakistani Muslims force feeding Pakistani Hindus beef.

Poorly titled video for a cultural tradition by an official news channel.

lol desis and RT dudes will happily chuck tomatoes at each other and find that cool but this is laughable :srt

It is sad what insecurity about faith or land can make people do. In Assam's case, illegal immigrants have given rise to an anti-Muslim atmosphere, and I expect more such cases.

Was kept in lock-up through the night, says Assam Muslim man attacked by mob over ‘beef’

New Delhi: The Muslim man who was the victim of a mob attack in Assam’s Biswanath Chariali last week for allegedly selling beef now claims he was kept “inside a police lock-up the entire night” instead of being taken to hospital.

Speaking to ThePrint over the phone, Shaukat Ali and his family said he managed to get admitted to a hospital only late morning the next day, when police released him from the lock-up around 17 hours after the brutal attack.

Police, however, claim Ali was detained at the station “only for security purposes” and was not locked up.

Ali, a resident of Biswanath Chariali, was attacked on 7 April by a mob that alleged he was selling beef. The mob allegedly forced him to eat pork, which followers of Islam consider forbidden, questioned his nationality, and asked if he was a Bangladeshi and whether his name had appeared in the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

A video clip of the attack subsequently went viral, and police arrested four of the suspected attackers.

What the victim claims
According to Ali, he was attacked around 4 pm.

“When the incident happened and I was beaten up badly, the CRPF [Central Reserve Police Force] intervened and took me to the police station,” he told ThePrint.

“There, they did some paperwork and took me for a medical examination. After that, they brought me back to the station and kept me in the lock-up the entire night. There were one or two more people in the lock-up with me, I was very badly injured so don’t remember exactly,” he added.

“It was only at 11 am the next morning that they finally let me go and got me admitted to a hospital,” Ali told ThePrint.

His family members claim that they had requested police to let him go earlier, but weren’t allowed to take him.

“We went to the station. After the medical examination, instead of being taken to a hospital, he was kept inside the lock-up,” Ali’s brother Abdul Rehman said. “We requested police to let him go, but they didn’t listen to us,” he added.

“Everyone only kept asking us what happened during the attack and nobody asked us what happened at the police station, so we didn’t talk about it,” Rehman said.

Ali was subsequently treated at Biswanath Chariali, before being referred to Guwahati Medical College, where he spent a couple of days. He is now back in his hometown, but says he “continues to be in great pain and can barely talk or hear due to a bad ear injury”.

The family says that while they are now satisfied with the progress in the case, they are resentful about the initial treatment meted out to Ali. They say he was let off “only after the video clip went viral”.

“Now police is working well, they have made arrests also. But why did they keep him locked up for an entire night instead of giving him immediate medical attention?” said Forhad-ur-Rehman, Ali’s cousin. “He did not commit a crime. He told us he also saw some of the boys who attacked him come to the station while he was in custody, and talk to police,” Forhad added.

“But instead of arresting them, it was Shaukat Ali who was kept inside the lock-up. He was released the next morning around 11 am, only after the clip went viral and police perhaps felt this was becoming a big issue,” he said.

‘Baseless claim,’ say police
Police term the claims of Ali’s family “totally baseless”.

“We brought him back to the station and kept him for the night only for security reasons,” Rakesh Raushan, Biswanath Chariali superintendent of police told ThePrint over the phone.

“There was a mob outside and it wasn’t safe to let him go,” he added.

Ali’s family, however, questioned this argument. If he was kept at the station just for safety, they said, he could just as well have been admitted to a hospital and provided security there.

They just kidnap and force convert the minor hindu girls to islam and force them to marry the men who are more than double their age , already married and have children.

Don’t act like you’re living in some angelic country.

This act however is condemnable and culprits should be punished according to the law.

Absolutely disgusting and deplorable state of affairs.

I wonder why this is not highlighted as other meaningless issues.

Difference being when they are kidnapped and forced converted even the PM of the country takes notice and cases are immediately registered.

Meanwhile in India no action will be taken against the culprits.

Compared to India, Pakistan indeed is an angelic country.

Pakistan has asked the Indian government to investigate the recent anti-Muslim violence in Assam and other such incidents that have taken place throughout the country, punish the perpetrators of these crimes, and take measures to stop such events from recurring in the future.

Two people were killed and 11 injured Thursday when Indian police committed violence against Muslims in Assam in a bid to drive them from alleged encroachments on government land.

Pakistan's demand came when Indian Charge d’ Affaires Cd’A was summoned to the Foreign Office today. During the meeting, the government conveyed its grave concern over the incident, a statement from the Foreign Office said.

The video showing the killing of an unarmed man by the police and the desecration of his mortal remains by individuals embedded with the security forces is shocking beyond belief, the Foreign Office said about the incident.

It was conveyed to the Indian official that the recent incidents of violence are, unfortunately, only a continuation of the relentless anti-Muslim violence that has become a norm in India under state patronage, the statement said.

"Security forces are either themselves involved in perpetrating brutalities against Muslims with impunity or provide protection to the ‘Hindutva’ extremists and terrorists who regularly indulge in lynching and other forms of torture against Muslims," the statement said.

A series of anti-Muslim and anti-minority legislation enacted by the Indian government and incidents of violence against Muslims highlight the rising levels of intolerance and lack of respect for the minority communities in India, the statement said.

The clashes occurred at Dholpur 3 in northern Assam's Darrang area, one of the four places where the police targeted its anti-encroachment drive. Around 800 families have been evicted from the land, who are accused of "illegally occupying" government property.

"Two civilians are probably dead and two more injured, along with nine police personnel. A mob of not less than 4,000 resisted the eviction drive by throwing stones at the police and attacking them with sharpened bamboo sticks,” claimed Darrang’s Superintendent of Police, Sushanta Biswa Sarma.

A video from the incident went gone viral on social media. In the video, several Assam cops could be seen in anti-riot gear, mercilessly thrashing a man with sticks even as he lay motionless on the ground.

A man carrying a camera could be seen angrily stomping the man's face as he lays there on the ground, not moving. Another police officer then jumps in and hits the man on the face with a stick before the others beckon him to leave.

Assam has become highly communal ever since communal bigot Sarma has taken over. Sonowal was much more gentle and genial, however Sarma as home minister even then held sway over the state and started sowing seeds of communal bigotry.

Assam is just microcosm of what is happening in other sanghi ruled states where communal bigotry is rampant.

This mob behavior is disgusting to the core

Putting aside selling beef, the poor butcher is just trying to survive and not trying to fight against any culture. Its pity that people are getting defensive against culture in India easily. I am from South India and in Hyderabad here, Camel meet is sold on old city in many places.

Frankly the more it is critical to bring these thing into law quickly
1. Once NRC and CAA is done, no one will point out u are an anti-national or what ever ****. U r part of India and we all have each-others support if thats what living in a country means.
2. Beef/Meat - Need put strong rules into what can be sold and what cannot be. As simple as that. I understand that muslim community have high % of butchers comparatively. If beef is banned, thats fine. They can sell another meat. Its just a product at the end.
3. Mob culture - This is a difficult pill to swallow for both Muslims and now prevalent Bhakths in India. I don't understand this insecurity that out of a small issue, 100’s of people gather in no time. This Mob behavior was very high among Muslims in Hyderabad & even in Bangalore (many recent incidents can support to this fact) from the start. And now these jobless political goons are just going for money they get for 400/day in attendance.
Cannot change this behavior in a day but abiding to law can change things.

The only way i see is again a simple aspect. As people have more job opportunities, get educated and be busy to support their families, the discrimination aspect will always be in the back seat.

And Assam had other sensitive issues die to immigration. Hopefully things will improve quick

What is with the place called Assam ? A very high percentage of news related to communal Hindutva terrorism and bullying Muslims comes from Assam.

Is it a popular place like Gujrat, UP , Delhi and Bombay ? Cant recall it's location in India or any popular events/Cricket matches that are held in Assam ?

I am from Assam. So are other two posters from here.

There's no hindu vs muslim mentality here. After 1971, there was big influx of illegal Bangladeshi people against which clashes are occurring. These illegal immigrants happened to be Muslim so it is easy to paint it as hindu vs muslim but even Assamese muslims have fought against the illegal immigrants in 1985 Assam agitation.
