Chandigarh: Navjot Singh Sidhu has landed the Congress in a pickle - again.

The MLA from Punjab's Amritsar (East) seat triggered a row after reportedly calling Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan as his "bada bhai", or elder brother.

Mr Sidhu - both the Congress' state chief and an unrelenting critic of his own party ahead of next year's election - was visiting the Darbar Sahib Gurudwara in Pakistan (via the Kartarpur corridor), before which he and members of his entourage were received and garlanded by a Pak official.

A video of that interaction was tweeted by the BJP's Amit Malviya.

In the short clip the Pak official greets Mr Sidhu on behalf of Prime Minister Khan, to which the former India cricketer seems to respond: "Thank you... he (Imran Khan) is like my bhai... my bada bhai."

Mr Malviya and the BJP have lost no time tearing into the Congress, the Gandhis and "a Pakistan-loving Sidhu", including reminding voters about his controversial embrace of Pak Army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa in 2018, for which he was ticked off by ex-Chief Minister Amarinder Singh.

"Rahul Gandhi's favourite, Navjot Sidhu, calls Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan his 'bada bhai'. Last time he hugged General Bajwa, Pakistan Army's Chief, heaped praises. Is it any surprise the Gandhi siblings chose a Pakistan-loving Sidhu over veteran Amarinder Singh?" Mr Malviya tweeted.

That last line has raised some eyebrows, given Mr Singh has formed his own political outfit and has confirmed he is open to seat-sharing deals with the BJP and breakaway Akali Dal factions.

The BJP's Sambit Patra accused the Congress of 'appeasement politics', referring to Salman Khurshid's book comparing "Hindutva" and Islamist terror groups like ISIS.

"Other leaders of Congress also gave statements against ''Hindutva''. Rahul Gandhi said ''Hindutva ko Bharat se khatra hai'," he declared, calling it a "designed pattern... to give pro-Pak statements".

It wasn't just the BJP that slammed the Congress.

Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Badal hit out at Mr Sidhu for "repeatedly insulting and demoralising the country's soldiers".

He demanded the Gandhi family - which has supported Mr Sidhu in his spat with Amarinder Singh - explain the comment and apologise to the people of the state.

"They should explain whether Sidhu's utterances are of his own accord or whether he speaks for the Gandhi family. Punjabis want to know whether the Gandhi family... is again fomenting trouble in the state," a statement by Mr Singh said.

AAP leader Raghav Chadha also chimed in, saying it is "deeply worrying that Punjab's ruling party and Chief Minister) are professing their love for Pak PM and Pakistan".

The attacks on the Congress come months before Punjab votes for a new government..

Mr Sidhu's remark was criticised by his party too. "Imran Khan may be anybody's elder brother but, for India, he is the cat's paw of the Pak deep state - the ISI-military combine," MP Manish Tewari said.

However, in a sign of the continuing discord within the party's ranks ahead of the election, minister Pargat Singh seemed to defend Mr Sidhu.

"When PM Modi goes (to Pak) he is 'desh premi'. When Sidhu goes, he is 'desh drohi'. Can't I call you a brother? We follow Guru Nanak Dev's philosophy," Mr Singh told news agency ANI.

As for Mr Sidhu, he appeared unconcerned by the row his remarks have caused. To a direct question about the BJP's accusations, he said: "Let the BJP say whatever they want."

On the re-opening of the corridor, he praised both Prime Minister Khan and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and called on them to also re-open cross-border trade via Punjab.

India recently re-opened the Kartarpur corridor - closed due to the pandemic - and, apart from pilgrims, political leaders from Punjab have visited the gurudwara in Pakistan. Those visits prompted more controversy state after Mr Sidhu was excluded from a group led by Chief Minister Charanjit Channi.

Mr Sidhu and Mr Channi have strained ties, particularly after the former threatened to quit because he disagreed with the latter's picks for Advocate General and police chief. After a period of sulking Mr Sidhu finally got his way yesterday with new appointments.

Delhi BJP MP Gautam Gambhir on Friday slammed Punjab Congress chief Navjot Sidhu for calling Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan his "elder brother", asking him to send his children to the border before making such remarks.

The cricketer-turned-politician also said India has been fighting against terrorism sponsored by Pakistan for 70 years and it is "shameful" on part of Mr Sidhu to call the prime minister of a "terrorist country" his big brother.

"Send ur son or daughter to the border & then call a terrorist state head ur big brother! #Disgusting #Spineless (sic)," he tweeted.

Mr Sidhu, who offered prayers at Kartarpur Sahib gurdwara in Pakistan earlier in the day, was effusive in his praise for Imran Khan.

"Imran Khan is my elder brother. I am greatly honoured. He (Imran Khan) gave us a lot of love," he said.

Mr Gambhir, the Lok Sabha MP from East Delhi, further said in a statement, "Does Sidhu remember that Pakistani terrorists killed more than 40 of our civilians and jawans in Kashmir in the last one month?"

Mr Sidhu, a former Team India member, had earlier courted controversy by embracing then Pakistan Army chief General Bajwa during a visit to the neighbouring country in 2018.

Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu today led a delegation comprising three ministers and several MLAs to Kartarpur Sahib even as he made a fervent plea to the PMs of India and Pakistan to open borders to facilitate trade.

“There is a tremendous potential for trade and religious and medical tourism,” he said, addressing the media on his return. Reminiscing his days as a cricketer, he observed: “When India and Pakistan cricket teams played a match, we shook hands and hugged one another before slugging it out in the field. What stops our politicians from doing so?”

The way Punjab is headed, it is ripe and ready to merge with Pakistan or separate from India - may end up well for Punjabi's on both sides if Indian Punjabis are able to achieve equal rights and constitutional status. Pakistan stands to gain a lot in agriculture and weaken India's armed forced.

New Delhi: A day after Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president Navjot Singh Sidhu said that India-Pakistan friendship will increase trade, Manish Tewari said it would be futile and useless to hold any talks.

Until Pakistan stops sending terrorists to India and dropping drugs and weapons in our areas via drones, it is useless and futile to hold any trade-related talks with Pakistan, the Congress MP said.

While speaking to the media here in Amritsar, Sidhu had said, “If our friendship is increased with Pakistan then our business will also be increased. I admire our former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s scheme when he started Aman Eman Bus Sewa from India to Pakistan.”

The cricketer-turned-politician further asked that if the Karachi border is open, why they can’t open the Attari border for business.

If the central government opens this, then it will boost the economy of Punjab, he said.

Last month, Sidhu had addressed Imran Khan as his ‘elder brother’ and raked a controversy.

Sidhu made the assertion of “bada bhai” (elder brother) while interacting with the CEO of the Kartarpur project in Pakistan.

He was in Kartarpur along with several Punjab cabinet ministers to pay obeisance in Kartarpur Sahib Gurdwara.

Sidhu also said he has lots of love for the Pakistan Prime Minister.

Responding to Sidhu’s remarks, the BJP slammed the Congress high-command with IT Cell head Amit Malviya saying the grand old party was favouring “Pakistan loving Sidhu over veteran Amarinder Singh”.

"Rahul Gandhi's favourite Navjot Singh Sidhu calls Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan his 'bada bhai'. Last time he had hugged Gen Bajwa, Pakistan Army's Chief, heaped praises. Is it any surprise that the Gandhi siblings chose a Pakistan loving Sidhu over veteran Amarinder Singh?” asked Malviya.

In 2018, during his visit to Pakistan for the swearing-in ceremony of Imran, he had hugged the army chief there.

Navjot Singh Sidhu BREAKS Silence On Leaving Kapil Sharma Show: 'There Were Political...'

Navjot Singh Sidhu’s departure from The Kapil Sharma Show in 2019 came as a shock to fans, with many speculating about the real reason behind it. Now, after more than five years, the former cricketer is returning to the comedian’s new show, The Great Indian Kapil Show, on Netflix for a special episode, where he opens up about why he left and addresses the rumours surrounding his exit. Although it was widely believed that his departure was due to his comments on the Pulwama terror attack, Sidhu has now hinted that his reasons were more complex.

In a recent interview on The Grain Talk Show YouTube channel, Sidhu shared his fond memories of working with Kapil Sharma and discussed his long-standing association with the comedian. Sidhu explained that he had been involved with various versions of Kapil’s shows since the beginning, going back to when Kapil first gained recognition on The Great Indian Laughter Challenge. Reflecting on his experiences, he described The Kapil Sharma Show as “a bouquet made by god," where every member contributed to its unique charm. He recalled how everything “fell into place" when Kapil approached him to join the show after Sidhu’s stint on Bigg Boss.

When asked directly about his departure, Sidhu revealed that political reasons played a key role in his decision to step away, though he chose not to elaborate further.

“There were political reasons I don’t want to talk about. There were other reasons… and the bouquet fell apart. I have a wish that that bouquet must get together again, the way it was. I will be the first to facilitate. His show is still doing very well. Kapil is a genius," he said.

Following Sidhu’s controversial remarks on the Pulwama terror attack, there was significant public backlash, leading the channel to replace him with Archana Puran Singh. In 2019, shortly after Pulwama attacks, Sidhu had said, “Nations cannot be held responsible for the dastardly acts of terrorists. The terrorists do not have deen, mazhab (sect and religion). There are good, the bad and the ugly. Every institution has them. Every nation has them. The ugly need to be punished. But individuals cannot be blamed for the dastardly act."

It shows what kind of a loser, insecure, and petty party BJP is (having issue with Sidhu calling Imran a "big brother").

Those who support BJP are like that too.

Sidhu joined Congress. Did you expect BJP to go easy on Sidhu? Political parties constantly do that.

If tomorrow Your Planted President Yunus calls Netanyahu as big brother, I am sure the entire BD will call him a traitor and will be after his head.

Planted? Hasina was an Indian plant. Not Younis. Younus is loved by people of BD. You Indians need to stop worrying about BD internal matters.

Your analogy is wrong. Younis has no relation with Netanyahu. But, Sidhu and Imran played cricket together.

Yunis was planted by Granpa Brandon. The ouster of Hasina has the blessings of US.

It is possible America wanted Younis but that didn't mean Hasina was popular. Common people of BD wanted Hasina gone.

Anyway, we are going off-topic.

There is nothing wrong with Sidhu calling Imran a big brother. They have played cricket together. BJP was being salty and so are you.

The mutual hatred is not something new. It existed for centuries. It continued after subcontinent got divided on religious lines.

Then Kashmir happened with the invasion of valley by Tribals aka Pathans at the behest of Pak army. Since then Kashmir helped the enmity to stay alive till today. We still see in the News where militants trained from Pakistan infiltrate into India regularly. Some get shot and killed at the border. The ones that manage to infiltrate will get killed by security forces eventually. In the process India also loses some army men. Rinse and repeat.

Blaming BJP is pointless. They are a political party that uses the rivalry to its benefit. Just like other so called secular parties that uses other issues to divide Hindus.

Oh please. It is not like the governments in Pakistan are showering love on India either. Your jailed ex-PM couldn't digest his food without posting a nasty tweet about the BJP and Modi. The current guy doesn't tweet, but has criticized India many times.

Action and reaction are equal and opposite.

He did so for Kashmiris. If India had solved it, he wouldn't have even cared about India
