Gambhir was a brilliant batsman from 2007 to 2011. Fantastic in all formats.

His rapid decline was disappointing, but truly an unsung, underrated hero of Indian cricket.

One of cricket's most underrated player.

Dislike him for his off-field antics but on field i haven't seen many batsmen who play as well as Gambo under pressure. He won India 2 world cup finals and is a true fighter.

Clutch tournament player. Now we’ll have to hear his political bakwaas. Sad, he could offer a lot to Indian cricket in mentor type roles.

One of the absolute best batsman India's ever had under clutch situations. His sudden decline was shocking and sad. Thanks for the services.

Very good player, always thought selectors were hard on him by not giving him a second chance. I don't like him, not at all, but credit where it's due... Rightly said by many ... underrated and underachieved, he had immense talent.

IIRC at one point he was even being considered as test captain in place of Dhoni

Still remember Dravid running out Gambhir on Sept 26, 2009 when chasing 303 against us in South Africa at the Champions Trophy.

What a touching video. Rehearsed, acted, still touching. Professional sport indeed takes a lot out of you and your family. Salute to Gambhir and everyone out there playing it at this level. Have a great retired life Gambo and thanks for your services.

Lol why the need for the elaborate cheesy video.

Anyways good luck in retirement. Not a great opener but played some of the most important innings in Indian cricket history

Also important part of the 2008-2011 Indian Test side when that Indian side was actually and indisputably the best Test side going around

A good career in Tests, ODIs and T20s alike - especially for that 4 year period between 2007 - 2011. Congrats and we wish him a happy retirement.

A thread I created some time ago:
Why did Gautam Gambhir decline so suddenly after the 2011 World Cup?

No motivation left after winning the world cup. If you remember, most players declined after that 2011 WC win like Bhajji, Gambo, Zak, Munaf etc. Winning WC at early/mid age can hamper your motivation to continue as a player. The reason why Sachin/Imran were so motivated in their last world cup (which both won)...because that trophy eluded them in their career which they long aspired for.

I'm sorry but whenever "Gambhir" and "video" are mentioned in the same sentence, it reminds me of his ultra cringe boxing video :)))

I think after the 2007 t20 WC and 2011 WC trophies, that is his 3rd memorable gift to India.

Too bad it got taken down.

Gautam Gambhir has announced his retirement from all cricket

The former India batsman – who helped his side to victory in the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup – has announced his retired from all cricket.

The opening batsman last represented India in the Rajkot Test against England in November 2016. He is set to end his career after Delhi’s Ranji Trophy match with Andhra, which will begin on Thursday.

Gambhir announced his retirement via a video announcement on social media, saying:

"After more than fifteen years of cricket for my country, I want to retire from playing this beautiful game.”

Gambhir top-scored for India in the final of the 2007 ICC World T20 Gambhir top-scored for India in the final of the 2007 ICC World T20
Gambhir, who played 58 Tests, 147 ODIs, and 37 T20Is, made his international bow in 2003. Over the course of his career, he scored 20 international centuries. While Gambhir enjoyed success as a Test opener – he was recognised as the ICC Test Player of the Year in 2009 – many will remember his contributions to India’s victories in the 2007 ICC World T20, and 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup.

In the 2007 final against Pakistan, Gambhir top-scored for his side with 75 to help them to victory, while four years later, his 97 against Sri Lanka helped India to 50-over glory on home soil.

Gambhir highlighted those two wins as a memorable part of his career, saying: “Two World Cups, highest run-getter in the final of both games, it is the stuff that dreams are made of.”

Gambhir and Sehwag were a huge success at the top of the order for India Gambhir and Sehwag were a huge success at the top of the order for India
In the longest format, Gambhir formed a notably successful opening partnership with Virender Sehwag, with the pair making 4412 runs together across 87 innings. They are ranked eighth in the list of highest partnership runs in Test cricket.

Gambhir made sure to thank those that have supported him throughout his career.

“Along this journey I have fostered some meaningful partnerships – none more than with you guys – the supporters of Indian cricket, the most important stakeholders.

“A big thanks for supporting me, and the teams I have played for.”

Cringeworthy video His intl career finished years back so I don’t understand the need for this

Anyways good luck to him

Not really much of a great player to me. He lost his form at a very young age and from 2012-13 onwards he was unable to fight his way back into the team. Maybe that speaks volumes of the amount of competition for batting positions in the Indian side.

People say he was brilliant from 2007 to 2011, but it could also be argued he started batting on tougher wickets from 2011 onwards and got found out. Maybe the concussion he suffered on the 2011 England tour damaged his career badly.

Was instrumental in India winning the T20 WC, the World Cup and the test series in NZ. Did well in the SA test series in SA.

The Concussion in Eng put paid to his career.

Really good player. His approach to faster bowlers was innovative back then too. Just ask Salman Butt.

I may not like him as a person [I can't be arsed...] but respect his batting career.

At his peak whenever he played against Pakistan he would be one of the batsmen who you needed to get out quickly. He had the ability to tear apart any bowling attack.

Helped India win two WC’s.

Great batsmen during India’s transition away from the Ganguly era.

Congrats on a great career. Played some great knocks in some pressure games for India. Was also a brilliant player of spin. Not likeable off the field but did have great respect for him as a batsmen.

2011 ODI World Cup final and the inaugural World T20 2007 cup final .Top scorer in both finals.
He was named the ICC Test Cricketer of the Year in 2009 apart from being named in the ICC Test team of the year.
So one of rare players who was good at all 3 formats.

Good player. Some great moments.

WC 2011 finals
WT20 2007 finals
Napier Test 2008(That draw helped India win a test series in NZ)

Changed the fate of KKR in IPL as well. A great captain to have never captained the country.

An 11+ minute retirement video? What is the world coming to.

On a more serious point he served India well and I hope he has a nice retirement.

People are over rating the guy tbh. Yes he played a few crunch knocks in high pressure games but he was a flat track bully. When faced with difficult conditions he flattered to deceive.

He was a key player to India's rise after 2007 as cricket powerhouse. Although he's a terribly unlikable person in real life.

Had his moments but not a great. Also as a person seems incredibly rude as well. I won't miss him at all.

Good career overall. Wish we had him and India had Hafeez :ashwin

Clutch in big tournaments and a solid test batsman in Asian conditions. Like many not a fan of his outside cricket, but as a cricketer he's earned our respect.

All said and done, I absolutely detest the politician that Gambhir is. Hopefully he chooses another post-retirement career/changes his ideology/fails as a politician for the greater good.

Good riddance. He was a clutch batsman but his extremist, ultra-nationalistic views have no place in cricket. If there is one cricketer that I've truly disliked, it has to be GG.

While annoying for sure I always found him more of a wannabe hardo rather than someone to be taken seriously. He came across as someone very insecure and with a Napoleon complex

Same day as Hafeez :))

Never liked any it two

Off the field, Hafeez is miles better than him (so far).

Hafeez is a pretty likeable guy off the field, let's be real. No hate or any ill will to Hafeez the man. Always smiling, presents himself well, and a well mannered guy. Good ambassador for the game.

We were making fun of Hafeez's drama etc but nothing can beat this bollywood classic video he has posted.

Good player but really should have more respect for himself than to post such videos.

Some people aren't just self-aware to have self-respect. Gambhir wants to be respected but he's not aware of his cringefest.

No one should be made fun of on the day they retire.

I loved GG's video though. Bad delivery but the script was good.

Tests
60+ avg in south africa
90 avg in New Zealand.
Was bad in aus and eng.
In odis he has much better numbers in SENA than saeed anwar.
He isn't a ftb by any means.

It’s kinda sad though in a way that he somehow managed to ensure that people will find (legitimate) reasons to poke fun at him or criticise him even in his retirement announcement.

While his peak was short he arguably is one of the great openers out of Asia considering his achievements. Played 2 of probably the 4-5 most important limited over innings in Indian cricket history and was key component of a Test side which went to #1 in the world and actually legitimately deserved that honour since it managed to win or draw in tough away series’ of England, NZ, South Africa.

Where is this video that everybody speaks about?

Can't find it on YT.

Edit: I'm referring to that motivation / boxing video.

Well done man. You were one of the best in Indian team. Sadly, he wasn't given proper chances in his bad firm which he deserved.

An important member of 'in-your-face' Indian generation of players.

Along with Ganguly, Sehwag, Harbhajan, even Laxman, he was instrumental in wresting Indian mindset from its more timid group of players.

Jinoistic bore outside the field, but that should not take the shine off his day job.

Any player would wish to have the peak Gambhir had between 2008-2011 starting from SL tour of 2008. ICC Test number 1 batsman, ICC trophy for best player, member of number 1 test team and finally the 2011 WC with the best knock of his career.

Underachieved as his relationship with Dhoni suffered badly and he started to have captaincy ambitions. Still a very good career he should be very proud of.

Hopefully he becomes active in Delhi Cricket administration. Has always fought for the talented youngsters taking on powerful deeply entrenched mafias which have ruled Delhi cricket for decades.

Wish the great Shahid Afridi would have done a 11min retirement video. Would have been longer than his average time spent on the crease.

It felt like he was reading from a board or mesmerized it. Either way the whole video didn't connect at all.

Good player

One thing which hasn't been pointed out is Gambhir was one of the best player if not the best player of spin bowling of his time in odis.

Especially his trademark shot of coming down the ground and lofting the ball over mid wicket.

He used to milk spinners for fun in odis.

A skill that modern batsmen seem to forgetting. Rarely see modern batsmen use their feet against spinners. All of them seem stuck on the crease

He had it wiped off the face of the internet. Only a few screenshots are left

At the moment is the key phrase.

Gautam Gambhir, the former India international, has been honoured with the prestigious Padma Shri, India's fourth-highest civilian award on Saturday, 26 January.

Gambhir, a veteran of 58 Tests and 147 one-day internationals for India was part of India's squads for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 and the ICC World Twenty20 2007 – both tournaments were won by India.

The 37-year-old recently announced his retirement from all forms of the game and has now been conferred with this award along with other India sportspersons inclduing Sunil Chhetri, the captain of the Indian football team, and Bajrang Punia, the Indian wrestler.

"It’s an honour I accept with gratitude. But it’s an honour which also comes with responsibility," Gambhir said on Twitter. "I’m living for the day when Gautam Gambhir the human being beats Gautam Gambhir the cricketer. That will be my day, my award to myself."

Gambhir was once the No.1-ranked batsman on MRF Tyres ICC Test Rankings for batsmen and was part of the Indian team that climbed to the top of the rankings. He accumulated 4154 Test runs at 41.95 with nine centuries and 5238 ODI runs at 39.68 with 11 tons.

The left-hander is fondly remembered for his match winning knocks in the finals of the two ICC tournaments – 97 against Sri Lanka in the 2011 World Cup final and 75 against Pakistan in the World T20 2007.

Former India opener and BJP MP Gautam Gambhir could be asked to take over as the president of the controversy-hit Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA).

The latest development comes after ugly scenes at the DDCA AGM meeting that saw officials indulging in fight fights and trading punches. The video of the incident went viral on social media with Gambhir himself tweeting it and asking BCCI to dissolve the troubled association and issue life ban on erring officials.

IANS quoted a DDCA official as saying that considering Gambhir’s background of an international cricketer and his understanding of the game and Delhi cricket, he is the perfect candidate to change the fortunes of the association.

“He (Gambhir) has shown what he brings to the table and was instrumental in changing the fortunes of KKR. Not to forget his contribution to Delhi cricket. With how we have seen the likes of BCCI President Sourav Ganguly impress with their leadership qualities as administrators, Gambhir could be the perfect person to take over the reins of DDCA at this point in time,” the official said.

“Some BJP officials have in recent times in fact also gotten in touch with him to understand what all has been happening at the association and after yesterday, it would only be ideal that a strict taskmaster like him takes over and gets the association back on track. Yes, he has shown interest in the talks we have had so far and another meeting is expected to take place with him in the new year,” the official added.

DDCA later named Justice Deepak Verma as Ombudsman and announced that the president of the association will be elected by January 13.
