Having been clocked officially at 95 mph in South Africa in 1993, this is Waqar a year later in the 1994 Mandela Cup. I think this is a 98mph to 100 mph delivery? Notice Waqar has slightly changed his action here.

Mustve been around the 90 -93mph mark

Waqar was quick but not one to bowl at 100mph imo

My favourite fast bowler ever and in my humble opinion the greatest fast bowler ever! Miles superior to wasim!
I reckon about 155kph.

Naked eye - I'd say his Sharjah deliveries early on in his career were faster. But then that's just totally unsubstantiated. Can someone post any of those?

speed aside, to me that is a near perfect dismisal from a visual point of view, just the middle stump gone... Perfect

I would say around 156 KPH (~97 MPH)

What a delivery that is though, so pleasing to watch.

I'm pretty sure around 89-94 Waqar must of peaked at 160 KPH. (~98-100 MPH) But he mostly operated around 145-155 I'd say. During his peak he was clearly as quick as Shoaib Akthar, maybe even quicker for longer spells on average.

I remember that series...
Miandad scored a sublime hundred in info the matches and yes there were speed guns.

156kmh is my guess

Just a question: can’t modern day technology figure out the speed of this delivery?

It's a little tricky. You can determine the "average" speed of the ball by noting the time from the point of release to the time it reaches the batsman. Then you know length of pitch and speed = distance/time.

However, "average" speed of ball is a meaningless stat since in cricket the speed which is measured is the one at point of release. The issue comes when the ball pitches it loses some of its energy and it's hard to predict from a video what the speed of the ball would be after it pitches.

On a side note, am I the only one that noticed how similar the SA & Pak players jerseys were?

You potentially can by calculating the distance ball travels frame by frame.

Thanks for explanation, I am aware of how to measure speed when you know distanse and time, so thought surely this must be easy to measure. Even if we say the delivery took 0,5 seconds to reach the 20,12 metres (22y) the speed is close to 145 km/h but it looked way quicker.

Should be around 90mph but wow speed is just one thing look at the movement and the delivery his bowling action just amazing.

150 kph plus.

This was what Pakistan cricket was known for: fast and furious. Its such a pity that 90’s team full of legends, skill and talent couldn’t dominate because of politics.

And also I don’t know why we have started producing timid personalities. Its been going on ever since the greats retired.

To me that seems about right. I think the batsman got beaten by the movement and not pace.

I'll ask Waqar how fast he thinks it was.

90mph plus probably.

Sadly it came to nothing thanks to the match fixing captain who decided to bowl against all common sense in the finals of Mandela Trophy.

My favourite fast bowler ever and in my humble opinion the greatest fast bowler ever! Miles superior to wasim!
I reckon about 155kph.

I thought Wasim was miles superior, usually more effective with the new ball and a bit more variety as well.

Nice to see a reminder of Waqar at his peak though, he was a force of nature in his early career, especially pre-injury.

Should be more. Around 148-150

I really doubt it.

It's the shape / movement which gives that impression of super high speed.

Otherwise, it looks early 140ks which is still fast! All the people throwing figures of 150kph around, they're just exaggerating.

Yorkers always look slower to the naked eye, it is probably a lot faster than it looks.

That was Waqar post his first major back injury...
1995/96 I think..

He was lightening fast before that first injury.

140 kph. That's how fast Waqar was at his peak. Back in the day 140 kph was considered express until the likes of Sohaib, Lee, Shane Bond, Johnson have redefined fast bowling.

I was lucky to see Waqar before his injury when he burst onto the scene. He was taking 7 wicket hauls in ODI games, anyone who thinks he was doing that at 140kph didn't see those games.

150-155 KPH

Waqar, Wasim and Shoaib are my favourite bowlers to watch old YouTube clips.

It was more the reverse swing than the pace that was doing the batsman in.

Thats around 154kph easily. Anyone who actually watched these guys bowl in the early to mid 90s know how quick they were. I watch bowlers that clock 145 in games today and they just don't look as quick.

This is 1994.

A year earlier Waqar was clocked at 95 mph.

In 1996 Waqar was clocked at 91 mph on the England tour.

I think this delivery is between 93mph to 96mph

Waqar will be remembered as perhaps the greatest fast bowler of all time.

I rate him higher than Michael Holding etc.

Nobody and I mean NOBODY could reverse swing and destroy toes like Waqar did.

This myth that Waqar was a consistent 150 km/hr operator. He wasn't unlike Shoaib or Lee. He could bowl the effort ball at 150 km/hr plus but on average he operated at 138-144 km/hr before really cranking the pace up with the old ball. This delivery i believe was 88-90 mph.

That isnt reverse swing Thats movement away with the new ball

Kirsten and hudson were batting

I agree, he was the greatest, I would pick him ahead of Marshal and Waseen Akram.

I grew up seeing Waqar's phenomenal fast bowling. He is always my all time most favorite.

Whenever he ran into bowl, I had a feeling that the batsman was going to be out. If that injury didn't happen to him, he would have been the leading wicket takers in ODIa and tests among pacers

Peak Waqar >>>> peak Wasim >>>> peak Akhtar

Agree?

If official measurement is not there, we can call it anything. However, Waqar used to bowl at 137-140 with occasional bowl going above 142-143. This speed was good during the era,
Indians were mostly in 125-135.

This looks like 145-150 range.

People who are saying Waqar used to bowl 135-140 kph have probably never seen him at his peak (1990-1994), he was easily as quick as Shoaib if not more.

There was a video on youtube of waqar bowling in a match in NZ. It was more than a hour long. That match was in early 90s. It had a speed gun. Though they didnot show ball speeds regularly, they showed a separate caption when Waqar bowled 150ks during the match.

In 90s, several matches in UK,NZ and SA had speed guns on the ground.

I saw Waqar bowling (Pre-Injury) and Moeen/Rashid standing way back and you could literally hear the thud. No way he was operating in the 140 KPH range.

He was frighteningly fast but it wasn't just the pace which got wickets it was swing and accuracy which stood Waqar apart.

Those that are saying 140 kph are either younger posters who started following cricket in the last 10 or 15 years or those who genuinely have no clue about the 1989 to 1998 era.

Clearly the delivery is 92 mph to 93 mph minimum.

Heck, Waqar was bowling from 136 kph to 140 kph in the last few years of his career (2000 to 2003) after he had slowed his pace down due to back injuries.

And this video is of 1994, almost 10 years earlier.

Have seen Waqar bowl live at the Oval, at Lords and in Uxbridge all pre injury so around 1989-1990..

I can honestly say he brought fear to the batsmen and was genuinely rapid. Fast, if not faster, then anyone else in that period.

Totally agree.

Can't tell by merely looking at the delivery, I have seen 140 clicks deliveries ending up knocking stumps in the same manner.

I'll ask Waqar how fast he thinks it was.

If you speak to waqar, can you also ask how fast did he think he was at his peak? Didn't a famous umpire (dickie bird, maybe?) say that he has not see the ball being sent down faster than waqar did in his prime? Unfortunately, most of the recorded speeds of Waqar are his 'post-injury' speeds.

Agree , and I remember watching the World Cup 2003 game between Pakistan and India , when Waqar and Wasim for that matter both looked old, way past their best, no longer as fit as they once were and almost medium pacers with Shoaib bowling at one end — and they were still clocking at 140kph+ - between 86-89mph regularly and touching 90mph a few times in that game and the game v Australia also in that tournament if I remember correctly.

I remember thinking at the time that having seen these guys bowl 10-12 years earlier at their peak and fastest , I don’t need any speed gun or analyst to convince me, have seen enough cricket to trust my own judgement with the naked eye that Waqar (regularly) and Wasim (in some spells only, when he wanted to go flat out) at their peak in early 1990s would have been around 7-10mph quicker.

That would put them in express pace range of
95mph+ , just as quick as a Shoaib Akhtar if not slightly quicker.

The fastest i saw them bowl was on the first tour of South Africa post World Cup. With the triangular between West Indies South Africa and Pakistan.
The thing with Waqar was that while he had his share of injuries, his delivery action and stride was effortless compared to Shoaib Akhtar. It looked like he could always go faster.

Shoaibs early action when he first burst on to the scene was also very fluid/whippy.

Like here:

It changed with time and became all about bowling "phaast" with effort/grunting. He didnt have the run up style back then that he became synonymous with.

Loved his early action.

Nah, compared to Waqar it was all grunt. But yes compared to his own action the earlier version was better

Waqar was poetry in motion. I think he was quicket than 90mph on average at his peak with his fastest ball being around the 97-98 mph mark.
He was scary fast but not quite the level of Akhtar /Lee in my opinion.

His own views of how fast he was at his peak would be very interesting to hear if Saj and others can make him answer that.

I find him more faster when he played for surrey in 90s. His duel with Robin Smith in County One Day final of 1991 is possibly the fastest i have seem him bowl.

Nowadays bowler bowl delivery which looks slow to eye but speed guns show 154 km)hr. When waqar bowled delivery which is way way faster and u can judge by fact that batsman is late on the ball and clueless gets bowled , speed gun show 150 km,/hr. The problem lies in earlier or modern speed guns. On modern speed gun waqars delivery which was clocked 150 km then would have measured 160 km/hr today. Today Mitchell stark or johnson or archer are minimal 10 km/hr slower than post injury waqar in 1994. 1989-1992 waqar was 15 km/hr quicker than fastest bowlers today.

When a bowl swings and beats the batsman it looks much faster from naked eyes. That is exactly what happened in this video. That ball was just in early 140s but was lethal due to movement. Many 150+ km balls looks ordinary when it comes straight in middle of the bat.

Looks around 140kph

I agree, its possibly not as fast as it appears with the wickets flying and Waqar had the ability and would have bowled tons of faster deliveries then this in his career.

Late 80s or 90 mph (Somewhere in early to mid 140s kph) as per my guess as well give or take 2-3 kph.

Rightly said, a wicket may also fly on an early 130s delivery if hit on the right area of stump. For example look at prasad's delivery to sohail in worrld cup who hardly touched 130s in his entire career. Some people are gone crazy on seeing the stumps gets uprooted and assuming it 150-155 kph delivery. Whereas a ball with that speed will never swing that way, it needs to be in 130-145 corridor to swing a ball. Waqar's range was mostly 135-145 during his entire career and anything above 140 was known as express pace during those days. It was the reverse swing that made him unplayable at his peak.
