[VIDEO] How do you rate Basit Ali's 127* against West Indies in Sharjah (1993)?

One game wonder

one tour wonder.
he went to west indies at peak of their powers in 92/93. It was Pakistan vs Windies for the unofficial test championship of the world.
he was javed miandad's understudy and managed to have a decebt test tour despite pakistan losing 2-0.
By the time this innings in sharjah came along he had played a fari amount of cricket vs. Ambrose, Walsh, and Bishop.
for those who saw this innings, it was an unprecedented assault on the most fearsome fast bowling attack of that era.
Pity for him that Brian Lara spanked a 153 (i think) when windies batted, for the victory.
Basit came to the team at a very bad time in terms of politics. He inserted them in some of them and paid the price for not focusing on his cricket.

Basit got involved in the whole match fixing allegations ( he was the innocent Party) and just drifted away. Another wasted talent

Much better batsman than what his numbers suggest. He was far better than what Pakistan is producing these days.

The inning against WI is one of the best ODI knocks of all time - none had hit Ambrose like that before.

He played several other good innings like 75*(76) against India in Austral-Asia cup, 52*(60) and 63(64) against SA and Australia in Wills Tri-series, etc.

He averaged 42 at 87 SR against three best bowling teams of his time: West Indies, Australia, and South Africa with a sample size of 18 games.

Anyone calling him a one match or one series wonder must be too young to remember his batting.

Basit Ali was one of the most exciting batting prospect to come out of Pakistan in the last 30 years. Too bad, he had a terrible attitude which ruined his career.

He got involved in petty politics that ruined his career at one stage he looked a talent at par with Inzi and Anwar as the batting main stays that will take Pakistan forward

I think he was a good batsman and too much into politics or let's see he got a brain to think with and to have an opinion which is typically a bad thing in Pakistan.

Err no, he in his debut series and Inzi were the only batsmen who stood up to probably the best bowling attack of all time in their own backyard in that 93 series as mentioned above and he also scored a masterful test century in NZ a year later.

Basit Ali was going to be the next Javed Miandad, except the former was more talented. His fortunes and stock declined with the rise of convicted match fixers of the 90's.

Both Basit and Aamir Sohail along with Saeed Anwar should have all played 100 tests for Pakistan and Rashid Latif at least 70. Only Saeed Anwar didn't manage that many due to his laziness otherwise the other three were the victims of retaliation due to their whistle blowing on match fixing.

If you call whistle blowing on match fixing against the sacred cow of Pakistan cricket and a convicted match fixers Wasim Akram and Salim Malik engaging in politics then you are terribly mistaken.

Spanking this world class bowling attack requires special ability and he was special talent .

Wow some very good shots. And all around the ground. Looked quite fit as well. The shot at 1:35 was my favourite.

It was the second fastest century of that time & fastest against WI. I have seen the live telecast of that match. Pakistan started snail slow & score was around 30 in 14/15 overs when Saeed & amir gone. Honestly WI team never witnessed that type of cruelty in past.
Basit was the genuine 1 down batsman but he hardly tested at that position.
