I was watching an interview with Shoaib Akthar and Mohammed Zahid and found this on YouTube - shows how fast Zahid was bowling on debut.

To my eyes it seems like he is bowling in the 90’s

What does everyone else think ?

Was my favourite bowler back in the day and I used to try and copy his bowling action. Big shame that the cameras used by PTV back in the day were probably from the 18th century (even though the corrupt mafia of PTV and ruling party were billionaires even back then).

The video quality does not do justice to how sharp Zahid was. Shoaib Akhtar himself claims that Zahid was a yard quicker than him so that must be something!

Tbh I have seen Zahid's clips from the Carlton and United Series and his debut. Barring one or two deliveries which look super quick, the average deliveries he is bowling looks to be around 89-90 mph. When he came back in 2003, he was bowling at 78-82 mph on average.

He looks around 90mph at most

Btw what shocking umpiring there was during those days Did the umps not apply the pitched ouside leg stump rule back in the 90s?

He played in one test in SA in 2003. He was clocking 140 plus and highest around 145-146.

This is not true, I saw that match, his average was 127-132 and his fastest delivery was around 143. He got whacked around and never got another look again

Naah. I clearly remember a bowly bowled at around 144-145. Both he and Sami started bowling short pitch deliveries.

One of the saddest stories of Pakistan cricket.

What a bowler he could have been.

If you impressed Brian Lara, you must have been good.

I remember him clocking around 90mph consistently bowling at Tendulkar and Dravid when he came back after severe injury in Sahara Cup series in Toronto in late 1990s - and he clearly looked like he had lost a yard in pace, definitely would have been express pace (95mph +) capable around 1995/1996.

If he was so express, then why were the likes of Junior Murray able to come down the track easily to Zahid and hit him like as if he was a spinner. Even Sherwin Campbell easily cut him for six. The fastest delivery the ICC have in their official records for Zahid was 144 km/hr in 1998.

I think he had a really fast express delivery and has definately bowled the fastest delivery in history 165 km/hr but i don't think his pace was consistent. One delivery he could be 150 km/hr, the other delivery could be 140 km/hr. Even in 2003, he was bowling on average 127-132 km/hr, he would then bowl one effort delivery at 140 km/hr, then the next delivery would be 130 km/hr. I think the myth that he was a consistent speedy express merchant is just a myth.

Barring his debut test match, he did nothing else.

That said, the way he was criminally neglected by the PCB is a travesty. Had someone like Imran Khan been around he would be doing everything he could to keep a tab on him.

Fast.

But

Not anywhere close to the fastest bowler on Earth ever, Shoaib Akhtar.

Akhtar himself said Zahid was faster than him.

He was the fastest around until his injury. In the 98 Carlten United series, Lara could not even touch him in one of his spells . I had watched this whole seires by getting up early in the mornings just for the our bowlers. What craze it was in that time I had for Cricket, now it has mellowed down quite a bit.

At his peak he could bowl close to 165kph.

Shoaib Akhtarhas himself verified that Mohammad Zaid was faster than him.

However for longevity Akhtar is the greater pace demon.

Imagine Zahid and Akhtar bowling together.

What a nightmare for the batsmen...

They did against australia in 1998 They both got hammered

Pace is nothing but an expensive luxury if you cant bowl the right lengths and lines

Yes you are right.

Disciplined bowling is way more important than pace.
