[VIDEO] "I was an automatic selection for the World Cup" : Imam-ul-Haq

Issue against the short ball against express pacers is still there but for today's game it is vital he bats long; he showed in the Asia Cup he plays Rashid Khan very well so needs to be out there when RK is bowling.

Throws his wicket away after a good start - really needs to do better.

He was all set with Babar to take us home but throws it away with a brainless shot. He is honestly such a limited batsman.

A lot of chances so far and hasn't gone on to make a significant score yet. He's getting Pakistan off to a start, that's probably as generous as you could be about these half innings.

Teams have been able to exploit his significant weaknesses against the short ball and spin. A real liability.

And it's not as if he scores freely when the bowling is pitched up..really has no scoring shots against any type of bowling.

He should only be in the test team. He has no business being in the ODI and T20 teams, with his pathetic strike rate. He is a strokeless wonder.

Too close to the World Cup for anyone to make a sane assessment .

Much needed bump.

Before the dead rubber on Friday, he was averaging below 30 and striking it at 68, when it mattered the most.

Automatic selection my @$$.

Inzamam speaking to the press today

"When I wasn't part of the Pakistan board and selection, in 2012 Imam was selected for Under-19s. In the 2014 Under-19 World Cup, he was the vice-captain. So our cricket has this pathway to come into international cricket via performances. People criticise a lot but I am seeing a guy who is the first opener with a 50+ average after 30-40 games. Like others are Pakistani players, he is also one. He has given outstanding performances"

"When Imam make 800-850 runs in a FC season, Grant Flower came to me and said he should be in the team. After that, when we were discussing about his selection, I moved to the side and let the others discuss it and Mickey Arthur was also there. Imam has been part of the team for the last 40 matches, you say he has been playing because of me, but there is a captain and coach also. We should look at performances and not become personal with criticism"

Abid Ali and Imam Ul Haq should be the Test openers, with Sami Aslam and Shan Masood as reserves. Haidar Ali is the long term solution though, but he needs to perform consistently this season.

Nepotism claims have been baseless. Fact is Imam has performed at every level he has represented Pakistan in before he got called up. U16, U19 etc.
He has taken his chances at international level which some of the others haven't been able to.

Shan Masood out performed Imam in test in SA. also imams inability to play short ball in his test career means he will be a sitting duck against most decent bowlers.

Fair points, let’s hope he improves.

Shan struggles against spin and on slow wickets like the UAE. Just look at his performance this FC game where the other openers made hay...

He failed twice, despite several let-offs.

Yes I agree that he has EARNED his place in ODI cricket.
He scored centuries in South Africa, UAE and England. I dont see anyone doing that.

Yes, ppl may argue that hypothetically other could do it as well. But we live in realistic World, not hypothetical

popular guy!

Gets a hard time from some of the press.

But he needs to knuckle down, look the other way and not take the bait.

not sure what the fans want from the poor guy.. he was giving strike to fakhar.. playing sensibly, no false shots.. no blind slogs like fakhar... the ball was actually pretty good tht got him out

the guy plays at decet pays (not a warner of old but still decent) puts price on his wicket, delivers mostly ...

just because he is related to some1, he gets a lot of stick

plus its not tht he has played 100 games.. he is young..36 games .. he will improve... we let malik and haffez play 300+ matches, we seriously can let imam a 100 games atleast lol

+ its first game of the season .. give some yards to the poor guy

Misbah speaking about Imam's selection for Australia:

"Imam if you look at his T20 stats, he's amongst the top players in the National T20 Cup with 2 MOTMs. In PSL also, he performed in the latter stages. If you look at other openers, they have a similar SR but lower averages. No other openers have really performed exceptionally with a high SR thus we kept him as a 3rd option. Fakhar and Babar are our first choice. With someone like Rizwan Hussain, he's batting in the middle-order so there isn't clarity about his batting position"
