Research centres would be established across Punjab province to carry out research on Sufism and science and technology.

In the first phase, Sheikh Abul Hassan Shazli Center would be established in Lahore for research on Islam, Sufism, religious thought, interfaith harmony, and modern sciences besides S&T.

Under the poor friendly and pro-education initiatives of Prime Minister Imran Khan’s spouse and First Lady Bushra Imran, the downtrodden segment of the society would be given equal opportunities to progress.

The first lady is also striving for the uplift of Panagahs, Langar Khanas, shelter homes and child protection bureaus.

Sheikh Abul Hassan Shazli Research Center would serve the poor students and those passionate about getting an education.

The centre would be linked with the shelter homes, child protection bureaus, prisons, particularly women and juvenile jails, schools, colleges, universities, public, private, and religious educational institutions.

The centre would also be linked with the libraries of world-famed research centres like Jstor, Oxford and Cambridge which would also be made remotely accessible across the province.

The portal and counters would be established to guide the students at the research centre for getting admission in local and foreign universities, in cooperation with the Higher Education Commission (HEC).

In the first phase, the MoUs are being signed with Government College University, Lahore College for Women University, Jamia Naeemia and Auqaf research centres for linkage with the Abul Hassan Center.

In Lahore, Abul Hassan Shazli Research Center would be established at Government College University Lahore for research on Islamic teachings, interfaith harmony, Sufism, Islamic philosophy, and Sufi traditions.

The centre would also introduce Bachelor, M.Phil and PhD programs on Islamic philosophy and Sufism. Moreover, Rahmatullil Alameen Scholarship would also be made part of it.

The centre has been named after Sufi scholar Sheikh Abul Hassan Shazli, who hailed from a royal family of Morocco and served in the fields of Islam and Sufism throughout his life.

As per the first lady’s vision, the research centers would be expanded across the province.

PM Imran Khan and his obsession with sufism and faith healers

Since coming to power, Imran Khan has been promoting shrines and faith healers instead of science and technology. He is an ardent follower of Peer Abdul Qadir Jillani - a sufi saint who is believed to possess extraordinary and supernatural powers such as bringing people back to life, walking on water and performing supernatural feats such as flying and teleporting.

Having inaugurated Al Qadir University- named after Peer Abdul Qadir - a few months back, today, first lady Bushra has ordered the establishment of Sufi research centers all over Punjab.

Instead of providing modern, quality and scientific education to the masses, Imran Khan is shoving the teachings of a Sufi saint down Pakistanis’ throats. How will we ever match the human capital of other countries when our kids are taught such fairytales about saints?

Apart from the above, he is further promoting illiteracy and pseudo-science by visiting and prostrating at shrines and wearing an assortment of healing rings. I never expected such behavior from an Oxford-graduate.

Discuss.

Its not mutually exclusive to promote education as well as Sufism.

Almost all mainstream politicians visit shrines, its not only Imran Khan, and its been going on since Ayub Khan era. The majority of people of Pakistan hold the sufis in great esteem, and that could include Oxord grads like Imran Khan.

In my hometown of Karachi, alot of people believe that the city is safe from cyclones because of Abdullah Shah Ghazi. So what? Their belief is not hurting anyone. They are not shoving their religious beliefs down other people's throats. They are not bombing anyone.

It is definitely promoting illiteracy and anti-science attitude. Ahmed Raza’s books in which he mentions that the earth is stationary are read and discussed, further promoting illogical and false beliefs. Now, such beliefs are being promoted at state level. Shrines in Pakistan are dens of immoral activities such as sex abuse and narcotics.

This is the 21st century and majority of Pakistanis believe that faith healers are their mini-gods who give them wealth and health. There is a video of a shrine where women bring a paan to a faith healer who then regurgitates and then puts it into women’s mouths, claiming that a half-eaten paan from his mouth will bring them health and blessings.

Also, this is not good use of taxpayer money. Who gave the first lady the mandate and the right to set up Sufi research centres. What good would these centres bring? This age is of science and technology, not shrines and faith healers.

While people are dying, Punjab government gave Rs120 million for the upkeep of Sakhi Sarwar shrine. Shameful! Instead of spending money on alive people, Imran and his government are spending money on dead people.

Well IK must have approved it for her to set it up. And as for who gave IK the right, the Pakistani people when they gave him a win in the election.

You can spend money on Sufi Research Centres and on Education. Its not like the PTI government is cutting the education budget. If Pakistani public schools are bad, thats a whole different discussion.

And Pakistan actually has some really good private schools, that provide a terrific education.

I have very little knowledge in this area, but I have only heard good things about Sufism. I think the key is for people who truly follow it in the right spirit and dont cross limits which takes them away from the true Islam.

In my opinion, this is a very good approach from Imran Khan.

The entire subcontinent, especially in both Pakistan and Bangladesh, Islamic schools are run based on Salafist ideology from Saudi Arabia. This is also the radical ideology of terrorists. The best way to neutralize this ideology is by promoting Sufism among the population and bring the syllabus of madrasah under government approved education system.

Fortunately PM Imran Khan have already taken the right approach by implementing uniform syllabus through out the entire country. This will help to stop spreading of salafist radical teachings in the society through madrasah.

So Imran Khan's promotion of Sufish, will eventually helps to de-radicalized the population further.

Also Ahmed Raza is not the only sufi scholar in the world. Based on his unscientific views, one should not generalize the entire sufi scholars of islam into one category.

As for promoting Science and technology, PM Imran Khan approves STEM education project in 2020.

He also launches Pakistan-Austria institute to promote science and technology education in the same year as well.

There is absolute zero public good in spending millions on studying the teachings of Sufi saints who were anti-science and held absurd beliefs. Sufis won’t help us to solve any modern problems.

Then the opposition should campaign on that and make it a election issue. Let the awam decide. After all like Maryam Baji has said vote ko izzat do.

On a serious note, the majority of Sufi promoted tolerance. Surely you would agree that is needed in Pakistani society. People like Shahbaaz Qalandar, and Baba Farid, and Data Ganj Bakhsh. At minimum the govt should ensure that their dargahs are in good condition.

Only rich people can afford private schools and the state of govt schools is, well less talk about it the better.

It is a big waste of taxpayers money. Better to invest such money in education and health that would actually benefit those who are alive.

They may have promoted tolerance but they are dens of crime, illiteracy, shirk and anti-science behaviours. For the record, it is believed by many that Shahbaaz used to fly :)

Sufism is not a separate branch, Whatever “Sufism” is said to be was already a part of Islam centuries ago. It’s the Brits and the westerners who didn’t want to get into all of the Islamic practices so just picked and chose the spirituality aspect and ran with that.

Sufism is about mastering your internal world from an Islamic perspective, which the sahabah did through contemplation, and is a part of Islam. It’s only these days a lot of people have disregarded this part of the faith and think if your pray 5 times a day it gives you the right to be a terrible person for the rest of the day.

Whenever I listen to a Barelvi molvi, it seems to me that they consider Peer Abdul Qadir as their mini-god. All they do is talk about his karamats/miracles.
