The ICC Under-19 World Cup 2022 will get underway in the Caribbean nations with West Indies taking on Australia in the first match in Guyana on January 14.

India, led by Yash Dhull, play their first match at the same venue in Guyana on Saturday (January 15) against South Africa.

All eyes will be on captain Dhull who will be under pressure to carry forward the huge Under-19 legacy for India. India have won the tournament four times - 2000, 2008, 2012 and 2018 editions.

Dhull will be eager to get the cup back home. Except Unmukt Chand, all other World Cup-winning captains went on to play for India, including Mohammad Kaif, Virat Kohli and Prithvi Shaw.

When the Indian head coach for the Under-19 team Hrishikesh Kanitkar was asked on the eve of the first match that why Dhull was chosen to lead the side, he said it was because of how good the young man is with taking tough calls.

"Primary quality in captain is have respect from players and without that he could be a good player but won't be able to do that job. He has got the respect of the team.

"Other strength is that he is fluid in the situation and can take tough calls. I think Yash backs himself and most of the time what he thinks at that point, he is able to do it. He is an instinctive captain," said Kanitkar.

Dhull too is very confident of a good show by Indians in the mega event and said that the team will take it game by game.

He said, "Our plan is simple. We have to take it game to game. Pressure will be there but important thing is to enjoy and then we can play freely."

Apart from the U-19 Asia Cup, which India won, and few warm-ups, this team has not had any game time leading into the tournament due to the pandemic situation but Kanitkar feels they are not thinking of what is not in their hands but what they can control.

He said, "It (playing under bio-bubble) is a challenge, what we need to realise is that this is the norm now. It is better to get used to it. This is reality now and you find things to by staying in the bubble.

"It (not getting enough games) can be difficult but it is also how you want to look at it. You need to focus on what is in your hand and what is possible in that much time."

From ICC release

Only a mix-up between the wickets denied India captain Yash Dhull the century that he deserved after a fine knock of 82 from 100 balls to anchor his side’s innings.

If the 19-year-old had been able to extend his stay at the crease then India looked on for a huge total. As it was he still managed to top-score in a total that proved too much for the Proteas.

The right-hander has now scored three half-centuries on the bounce, with this innings following 50s against Australia and the West Indies during the warm-up matches, and he looks well-set to dominate this tournament with the bat.

"Three Indian players had tested positive yesterday and were already isolated. In the morning before match our captain and vice captain also tested positive in Rapid Antigen Test which is not (not considered) conclusive," a BCCI official told PTI.

"So they, as precautionary measure, were pulled out. The players included skipper Yash Dhull and his deputy Shaikh Rasheed. We only had 11 available players and six isolated," the official added.

Looks a find. Wish we had someone like him in the prev setup.

Vijay Zol, Unmukt Chand, Ricky Bhui etc were 'finds' as well. They 'found' themselves nowhere eventually.

This Dhull kid is good. I hope he keeps his head between his shoulders and his feet on the ground.

A large part of the development of youngsters is in the hands of players themselves. Some are willing to put hard yards to take their game to next level. Some just settle for smaller goals.

Quite true actually. Hope fully he makes it. Great talent

Unmukt chand was the flavor of the under-19 in the year when India beat Australia in the under-19 world cup final. Look who made it big. It was Travis head from the same match. In the 2010 final Doron picked up key top order wickets of Pakistan (Babar Azam, Ahmed Shezad included). Picked 3 key wikets. Hazlewood with 4 wickets in the same match made it big. I am not sure where that Doron is. Didn't even play first class games. Handful of List A games. That's it.
.

India seem to be churning out world class batsmen for fun… the list is endless another guy who seems destined for the top

We cannot judge before he plays International cricket , a lot of players were hyped at junior level in different countries, a lot of them failed.

It’s really a tough competition in the sub continent but persistence still pays, hope he continues his form and doesn’t fade away

Doran threw his bat at the match official in a grade cricket/club match in Australia around 2015 when he got out on 87. After that possibly boycotted by the cricket fraternity as he never played a FC, List A or a BBL match in Aus domestic circuit after that. Still plays club cricket I think.

Ofcourse there is lots left to be done. Not counting any chickens yet but he is one those players that most Indian setups are in need of. A Middle Order crisis man

5 wins in 14 editions - Yash Dhull and Co. scripted history on Saturday evening in Antigua as they helped India to win their fifth Under-19 World Cup title in 14 editions of the tournament. India beat England by four wickets in the final as all-rounder Raj Bawa starred with both bat and the ball after taking a five-wicket haul and scoring 35 runs off 54 deliveries. While this was the Men in Blue's 8th appearance in the summit clash, it was also the fourth successive final the Indian team was playing in the youth World Cup.

Dhull joined a special list of captains leading India to an ICC title. Here's a look at India's past wins at the Under-19 World Cup:

The tournament began in 1988 and its second edition was played a decade later directly in 1998 but the Men in Blue tasted success for the first time in 2000 under Mohammad Kaif. The side featured the likes of Yuvraj Singh, Venugopal Rao and Shalabh Srivastava. Reetinder Sodhi and Niraj Patel helped India chase down 179 runs against Sri Lanka in the final as they won by 6 wickets.

From then on, it took India 6 years to reach their next final and two more for their next title under Virat Kohli in 2008. The side featured the likes of Ravindra Jadeja, Manish Pandey and Siddharth Kaul. Tanmay Srivastava led India's response with the bat with hard-fought innings of 49 runs off 74 ballas as they beat South Africa by 12 runs (DLS method) in a rain-interrupted thrilling final.

Four years later, skipper Unmukt Chand led India from the front as the team decimated Australia in the final of the 2012 edition. The side featured the likes of Hanuma Vihari, Sandeep Sharma and Akshdeep Nath. India were chasing a tricky total of 226 runs but Chand took the responsibility on his own to win the match for his side as he played an unbeaten whirlwind knock of 111 runs off just 130 balls including 7 fours and 6 sixes as they on with 14 balls remaining.

After which India reached the finals again in 2016 under Ishan Kishan but was were beaten by West Indies in the final. However, under Prithvi Shaw, the Men in Blue had a podium finish again as they beat Australia in the final. The side featured the likes of Shubman Gill, Arshdeep Singh and Shivam Mavi. Opener Manjot Kalra smashed a fabulous century as India chased down 217 runs in the final and won their fourth title.

Yash Dhull, who captained India to the ICC Under 19 Men’s Cricket World Cup 2022, has been named as skipper of the Upstox Most Valuable Team of the Tournament.

The right-hander takes up his place at number four having hit 229 runs in the competition, including one century, and his deployment of his bowlers was crucial in leading his side to overall victory in the tournament.

Yash Dhull, the captain of India's victorious U19 World Cup squad, was on Wednesday included in the Delhi side for the Ranji Trophy, beginning February 17, while senior India pacer Ishant Sharma has made himself unavailable for selection. The Dhull-led India U-19 side was felicitated by BCCI in Ahmedabad on Wednesday during the second ODI against West Indies. Since he could not play the domestic red-ball tournament at U-19 level due to his white ball commitments with the Indian team, Dhull will get taste of red cherry at the much tougher first-class level.

"His confidence his high and even though he hasn't played a lot of red ball matches, we want him to get a taste of first class cricket," a selector told PTI.

With his future uncertain in the Indian team, veteran pacer Ishant has communicated to DDCA president Rohan Jaitley that he is not available for selection for the state team.

Left-arm pacer Pradeep Sangwan will captain the side.

Dhull has not had any time to rest after the triumph in the Caribbean last week.

Dhull, who with the rest of the team landed in India on Tuesday morning, will make a quick visit to his hometown Delhi on Thursday morning before joining the squad in Guwahati later in the day.

Dhull has to reach Guwahati on Thursday and complete a five-day quarantine along with the rest of the team.

India pacer Navdeep Saini is also part of the squad.

Squad: Pradeep Sangwan, Nitish Rana, Dhruv Shorey , Priyansh Arya , Yash Dhull, Khsitij Sharma, Jonty Sidhu, Himmat Singh, Lalit Yadav , Anuj Rawat Wk, Lakshay Thareja wk, Navdeep Saini, Simarjit Singh , Mayank Yadav, Kuldeep Yadav, Vikas Mishra, Shivang Vashist, Shivam Sharma. COVID reserves: Dev Lakra, Hrithik Shokeen.

DC Pick Yash Dhull

India U19 World Cup-winning captain Yash Dhull, base price of Rs 20 lakh, has been picked up by Delhi Capitals for Rs 50 lakh.

India U-19 World Cup-winning captain, Yash Dhull, has continued his purple patch and kicked off his Ranji Trophy career with a century for the Delhi state team. Playing his first red-ball game, Dhull reached the three-figure mark off 133 balls.

The right-handed batsman was given the tough job to open the innings. Capped Tamil Nadu pacer Sandeep Warrier pushed Delhi on the backfoot right in the morning session and dismissed opener Dhruv Shorey and Himmat Singh, leaving the team reeling at 7/2 after 3 overs.

Dhull rescued Delhi and added a crucial 60 runs for the 3rd wicket with senior batsman, Nitish Rana. Dhull kept the scoreboard ticking after the fall of the 3rd wicket and has so far added over 100 runs for the 4th wicket with Jonty Sidhu.

Dhull's memorable knock includes 16* fours. The U-19 WC-winning captain has made the best possible start to his first-class career and will hope to carry his form in the upcoming games.

This year, the Ranji Trophy will be played in two phases. The opening batsman will not have much time to rest as he will be joining Delhi Capitals' camp after the first phase, which ends on March 15. The 2nd phase will kick off on May 30. IPL 2022 is slated to be played from the last week of March to May.

Dhull has joined his home team, Delhi Capitals (DC), for Rs 50 lakhs. Apart from DC, he drew bids from Punjab Kings. Dhull has been part of DC's academy.

thanks for this info.. was wondering if this has been done before.

Yash Dhull smashed an unbeaten double century for Delhi on Day 4 of their Ranji Trophy match against Chhattisgarh.
Really good start to his first season. Needs to play 1-2 FC season like this and could be in contention for India A tours.

If he was a Pakistani, he would have been in the national team till now.

Some Indian players must be thinking if they were born in another country, they would've been permanent member of national team by now. There is so much competition in India that guys like Gill, Shaw, Iyer still fighting to get selected/keep place in team.

Pak doesn't groom youngsters properly and throw them in international arena whereas lot of skilled Indians youngster can't even make way to national team.
There is no middle ground. Life is so hard.

This guy is extremely consistent. Gill was also very consistent in domestic. He literally bullied all the bowlers. This guy has already shown an appetite for big runs like Kohli. 3 centuries in 4 innings Kohli did at the national level. This guy has just started. Hopefully, he translates into an international success.

U-19 World Cup Winner Removed From Delhi Captaincy After Humiliating Ranji Trophy Defeat

Yash Dhull was on Monday removed as Delhi captain, hours after the team suffered a heavy defeat against Puducherry in their Ranji Trophy opening match. Senior batter Himmat Singh will now lead the side that takes on Jammu and Kashmir in an away game from January 12. In an attempt to revive Delhi's flagging fortunes, U-19 World Cup-winning captain Dhull was made the skipper of the side in December 2022. Since making his debut in February 2022, Dhull has made 1185 runs at an average of 43.88. Dhull made two and 23 in the nine-wicket loss to Puducherry at home. The 21-year-old had also led the side in the white-ball tournaments earlier in the season.

"Yash is a talented player but is out of form. We wanted him to do well as a batter, that is why we have relieved him of captaincy duties. Himmat is our senior player and has done very well for us. He will captain the side," DDCA joint secretary Rajan Manchanda told PTI.

Dhull has struggled against fast bowlers, of late and was reluctant to open the innings.

Himmat had led Delhi to a momentous win over Mumbai in the former's absence last season. The 27-year-old has played 22 first-class games, having made his debut back in 2017.

The team manages to court unwanted attention season after season. Last year, senior players Nitish Rana and Dhruv Shorey left Delhi and moved to UP and Vidarbha respectively.

Senior pacers Navdeep Saini, who was named in the India A squad to face visiting England Lions, and Ishant Sharma won't be travelling with the team to Jammu.

It has been learnt that veteran pacer Ishant will only be available for Delhi's home games.

Delhi, who have won Ranji Trophy seven times, last lifted the coveted trophy back in 2007-08.
