[VIDEO] Kusal Mendis arrested after being involved in fatal road accident (Released on bail)

Sri Lanka batsman Kusal Mendis was on Sunday arrested after a vehicle he was driving hit a 64-year-old man, killing him in the wee hours, in the Colombo suburb of Panadura. He is to be produced before a magistrate later today, police said.

The 25-year-old wicket-keeper batsman has represented Sri Lanka in 44 Tests and 76 ODIs. Mendis was part of the national squad which had resumed training after the COVID-19 lockdown.

Sri Lanka’s international assignments, including a tour by India, have been cancelled due to the pandemic.

More than 3,000 people are killed annually in traffic accidents in Sri Lanka.

A former spin bowler, Kaushal Lokuarachchi, was given a four-year suspended jail sentence for crashing into a woman pedestrian and killing her in 2003.

It was after a wedding that he was driving back home. He has dropped a few senior players on the way back as he was the only one who was not drunk at the party and was given the responsibility of giving a ride back home for the players who were apparently on a drink. Avishka fernando was also present with him during the accident. Apparently kusal mendis fell asleep and lost control of the wheel

Driving on the wrong side of the road and worst of all driving away after the accident leaving the poor cyclist to die on the kerb. Inexcusable fell asleep at the wheel yeah, nah. Should be locked up what an idiot sadly sums up SL cricket these days I guess.

Kusal Mendis, was released on two sureties of one million each after being produced before the Panadura Magistrate Court.

Test Cricketer Kusal Mendis has been produced before the Panadura Magistrate Courts. He was arrested by Panadura -North Police , over a tragic fatal accident which was caused by him yesterday. The accident occurred when a cyclist was run over by the car driven at high speed by the famous cricketer in Horetuduwa area in Galle Road , Moratuwa which comes under the Panadura Police Division.
