Last time I saw an engine belch so much black smoke as the one in video at 0:26 was from a ancient 3-wheeler tempo in Jungpura New Delhi back in 1995.

guess what, you actually saw Indias Mig-21, becoz it has the same engine.

probably using the afterburner and hence the extra fuel causes the smoke. If you watch the video carefully the same aircraft later on goes from Smokey engine to smoke free

now find me the Smoke ?

Seriously, why is this producing so much smoke?

From 0:55 of the video

Screen Shot 2017-10-27 at 3.17.59 PM.jpg

There is so much smoke from the one on the left that it looks like it has already been shot up. The powerplant for the JF-17 is a Klimov RD-33. It appears that the Chinese did not do a good job of pirating the engine or the Russians sold them a defective design.

Black smoke is never ever a good thing for any kind of engine to be producing.

read it for the 3rd time.

RD-33 is known for its lit bit of smoke. you can verify this to any defence expert.
Pakistan gt the new deal from russia which is the latest of RD-33MK series. you can see the other one jet on right side which hasnt much smoke.

Hows that rickshaw, Tejas, coming along??? still 2-3 decades of development left? :)))

RD-33 MK

The RD-33MK "Morskaya Osa" (Russian: Морская Оса: "Sea Wasp") is the latest model developed in 2001. It is intended to power the MiG-29K and MiG-29KUB shipborne fighters, however it has also been adopted for the MiG-35. The RD-33MK develops 7% higher thrust, is digitally controlled FADEC and smokeless unlike earlier RD-33 engines, has increased afterburner thrust to 9,000 kilograms-force (88,000 N; 20,000 lbf) and dry weight 1,145 kilograms (2,524 lb) compared to the baseline model through modern materials used on the cooled blades, although it retains the same length and maximum diameter. Incorporated is an infrared and optical signature visibility reduction systems. Service life has been increased to 4,000 hours. The RD-33MK ensures shipborne fighters unassisted take-off capability, retain performance in hot climate environment and, naturally, a boost in combat efficiency for MiG-29 fighter latest variant.

I understand that afterburners inject fuel downstream, but the fact remains that black smoke indicates unburnt carbon particles or other inefficiencies.

Also note that one plane produces the smoke while the other doesn't.

Any idea when the work on Block 3 of JF17 will start? Lonewarrior

Expected in August 2019, PAF is aiming for 4.5th generation war-fighting capabilities with JF-17 Block III, which is the need of the hour. Biggest advantage of JF-17 - as a platform - is the flexibility in regards to type of munitions it can be made compatible with, and the type of components that can be retrofitted. However, we import numerous components from China, Turkey, France, Ukraine, Sweden and Russia for use in our hardware, and these countries fall short in comparison to what US can develop and field - conventional wisdom.

F-16 Block 70/72 is a big leap from F-16 Block 60/61 (UAE), and PAF have [eighteen] F-16 Block 52+ in its inventory which are significantly better than JF-17 Block II.

"Lockheed Martin has also integrated technologies derived from the F-22 and F-35, including the Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) APG-83 radar that provides F-16s with 5th generation fighter radar capability – there is a 95 per cent software commonality with the F-35 radar and more than 70 per cent hardware commonality.

Amongst its many benefits, the AESA radar provides improved detection and tracking ranges, the ability to track 20 or more targets and the ability to conduct both air-to-air AND air-to-surface operations at the same time.

Its performance as a single-engine fighter is also unmatched – it achieves 50% better time to climb, its acceleration is 35 per cent better and it has a 50% greater air-frame life than its nearest competitors – the new F-16 Block 70 aircraft are now certified to 12,000 flight hours each, which is well beyond the original 8,000 hour lifespan.

The F-16 Block 70 has 40% greater combat air patrol time and nearly 50% greater weapons carrying capability over other single-engine fighter aircraft at a cost much lower than two-engine fighters. A range of innovative safety features are included in the F-16 including the one-of-a-kind Automatic Ground Collision Avoidance System – or Auto-GCAS – which has already saved the lives of seven F-16 pilots around the world." - James Robinson

Do you know about Project Azm? It was a plan to indigenously build a 5th gen fighter taking the experience from JF-17, and expected first trial flight was supposed to be in 2030. The project was with Chinese and/or Turkish assistance but most of the work would be done inhouse. There was alot of chatter about it during the tenure of the previous Air Marshal but not so much now.

2030? Hehe it's almost ready and i can give you tons of details about it. IinshaAllah you will see its flight in Aug, 2019 .. May be in Karachi :))

Inhouse? I do know JF17 are built in PAC Kamra locally but never had the idea the work on another jet is being done there too.

in Mid-2019..

So China is ready to give us the J10-C?

thre will be no J-10C.

Hes talking about new 5th Gen jet. it will take almost 7 to 8 years, before our F-16s gt retired.

J10-C took part in Joint Exercises in Dec-2018. But i am not sure if GOP will ask for these jets, since locally we are working on 5thGen Jet. More like an upgrade to current F-16.
