[VIDEO] Mismanagement of Naseem Shah's injury means he's missing the World Cup

Watch below as @Saj discusses the injury heartbreak for Naseem Shah. Why was an NOC given to him for the LPL when he was already carrying the shoulder injury? Who is responsible for the mismanagement of his injury? Why wasn't he rested for the Asia Cup? He says that questions need to be asked of the PCB medics responsible for players fitness and injury management.

 
Certainly babar is also responsible as a captain because naseem was playing along side him in LPL, how he never realised that worldcup is around the corner and naseem is overburdening his body.

After all Naseem also is also responsible, he should have taken better care of his fitness. Unfortunately, it seems that many of our young players prioritize money over their physical well being.
 
Judging from some of the comments that Inzi made at the press conference this morning, it seems like TM are finally cotonning on to the stupidity of handing out NOCs to your premier players for every pyjama league in existence, when they should instead be getting much needed recovery.

Shame they only realised after our most consistent ODI bowler got injured before the most important month of the next 4 years.
 
Saj, sultan and V for vendetta are probably the only people I have never disagreed with in this forumn.

Everyone here be lecturing me on making shaheen Captain of the odi squad when all that'll happen is that shaheen will end up retiring early.

You don't play fast bowlers in every single match in this era where tours are so frequent especially in harsh weather conditions and a dual hosted tournament, something our captain doesn't understand with his legendary winning 11 combo. He's injured naseem, and shaheen(2×) now.

I would have thought that the PCB would have stepped in and stopped all NOCs until a detailed investigation is done.
 
It has been a story with Pakistan cricket for a long time now and with ever increasing amount of cricket, players are playing I afraid that we will see more and more such issues with the players. PCB should take better care of their players in order to make sure that they will be fully fit going into a big event like the World Cup.

This injury is also on Naseem for a large part. He like many other Pak players signs up for every single T20 game.
 
PCB needs to limit the amount of franchise cricket that central contract players can play. They should also increase their base salaries to incentivize rest. In that sense, the BCCI has a great policy

Naseem shah and other main Pak internationals make lots of money. Its just pure greed.
 
The first misfortune of Naseem Shah is that he is born in PK so he will only earn 10% of the money people 1/10th of his caliber will earn. Second, we want to further clamp down on them by limiting their earnings?

They are not from middle class/upper class backgrounds like the most of us. They come from very humble background and by playing in leagues they are only looking out for the future of their family which is a fair thing to do for any person in their shoes.

People only look at the players earnings but dont factor in their expenses, these players have a lot of dependants and are the lottery ticket for their family members to get out of poverty to a high standard of living. Plus this is the most inflationary era in Pakistan's history therefore people are not really being able to save much anymore.
 
Clearly, we've always had this practice with our pacers in the past. Naseem Shah, for instance, participates in all formats and multiple leagues like LPL, BPL, T20 Blast, Hundred Ball, and CPL. PCB should consider granting only a limited number of NOCs to their top pacers. However, players are also partly responsible for their injuries. Playing in every league can potentially affect your health, even though it brings in more money.

It is not Babar's duty, Leagues are about making money if Babar decides who gets to play than there will be infighting. PCB issues NOCs for Leagues, it is PCB's responsibility. PCB needs to curtail and closely monitor the number of leagues frontline Pace bowlers play. Shaheen, Haris Rauf & Naseem all should not have been allowed to play so close to World cup & in future even before a major tour like the tour of Australia.

is this before or after the injury update? Looks like the agents of Pakistan players are running the show. They want to maximise their commissions irrespective of player injuries.
 
We've already seen stupid mismanagement of shaheen and injuries he's had. Now it's Naseem.

PCB are always amateurish and incompetent when it comes to these things
 
IF it is true that Naseem wasi njured pre Asia cup (I thought it was that dive that injured him during the tournament) then the performances he put in are even more special. The pace, swing, bounce, resiliency...it's absolutely remarkable!
 
Those who are taking pcb side in giving players nocs for league should first tell me why it's taking 4-5 months for pcb to settle central contracts dispute with the players ? They haven't even paid for last 3-4 months and yet playing for pakistan
 
There has to be a balance between the players and the Board or this sort of situation will keep on happening and Pakistani players will continue to get injured.

As I wrote before there has to be long-term planning and agreement between both parties regarding which leagues they will play in and this planning has to be done where possible well in advance.
 
If you are a Pakistani fast bowler (or any player in the Pakistani line up), take your physical well-being very VERY seriously, and DO NOT trust the PCB with it.

They couldn’t care less about your health. They will play you 20 games on the trot Vs Uganda, Ireland and Papua New Guinea and run you into the ground risking your career.

And if Allah na karay the injury is fatal to your career, they will move on without a second thought.

The coaches they hire as well regarding overall wellness and fitness are also unqualified at times and will do more harm than good.

If Shaheen wasn’t spared and was treated like a baqra for slaughter after injuring his knee, despite being a superstar in Pakistan, realize they won’t be there for you either.

Agreed. Players need to take responsibility here and not pass the Buck on PCB. There are examples of International players like Starc, Cummins skipping 10x more lucrative contracts to stay fit for key events.
 
The worse part about this saga is that the approach Naseem took didn’t prioritize his own earnings.
Naseem will skip the WC and potentially 1-2 leagues and he won’t make more money at the end of it vs if he had stayed fit and skipped LPL. It was just impulsiveness from the player

Stop blaming the players. It is clear now that PCB is the party that has not paid it's players their contracted dues since 4 months and is squeezing them more.

It is a big thing that players have not revolted yet against PCB like West Indies teams of past. And now you want to further curtail the monies they are able to pick up from intl leagues?

stop sensationalizing the situation. These players are very well to do and are willingly negotiating a better central contract to earn more and get more flexibility to play more leagues. Good for them. It’s not as desperate as you're trying so hard to make it sound. The contract was signed today and salaries will be paid eventually.

The point is that players should not be allowed to walk away free. There is a balance that a player needs to strike. When you know Asia Cup and a lengthy World Cup is coming, is it necessary to squeeze in a full season of LPL in between a test series and the world events? is it the last league ever?

As a result of this poor choice, Naseem will end up making less despite playing the LPL as he will miss the WC, likely even the Aus series and the PSL! So net, he’s probably losing money and that’s the dumb part.

But how can you stop someone from earning as much as possible? Franchise cricket has become a problem for all major cricket boards and it's difficult to say no to players, because that may push some top players from missing games for their country.
 
I think the new central contract has a clause about this situation where you are allowed to play only 2 leagues per year.

The leagues also have to be high quality i.e. Hundred, Natwest, SAT20, Big Bash, ILT20, IPL.

LPL, BPL or even the CPL should not even be allowed. However these boards could respond by saying we are not going to allow Sri Lankan, Bangladeshi players to play in the PSL but then again how many Sri Lankans, Bangladeshis have every played in the PSL. The PCB may have to compromise on the CPL because West Indies have always allowed their players to participate in the PSL.

Well then they should play leauges and not for Pak. Naseem injury is a prime example. Lad was playing non stop leauge cricket. Shadab another one, can only bowl 4 overs against locals in leauge cricket. Has no idea even how to bowl in ODIs.

I agree, the younger cricketers need to be protected, not just from injury bot from playing the leagues and spending more time in first class cricket. I think this was said about Shadab years ago. Apparently the new central contracts limit the number of leagues a player can represent, not sure if thats true but its the rumour at the moment. That would be a common sense step.

There's little excuse for money in the top boards.

The highest rated central contracts in England are worth 900k a year yet contracted cricketers from England are appearing in multiple t20 and other leagues across the world, while missing large chunks of domestic first class cricket and turning up for the odd blast game or The HUndred.

In Pakistan, the top contracts are worth 4.5 mill rupees/month, thats about £12,700 a month...a HUGE sum of money in its own right. Not to mention a % of the ICC revenue from the PCB. Add to that match fees, bonuses and sponsorship deals, these guys are rolling in it.

Yet greed corrupts and everyone across the world just wants more of it.

Max 2 leagues and ideally in the UK or Aus. Also they should be playing 4 day cricket, Shadab is really a prime example of how you regress as a player when your sole focus is T20 circus cricket. He cant even bowl 6 balls an over at the same place. His stock ball has become the full toss!
 
The Pakistan Cricket Board has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with DineticQ, Loughborough at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore.

The MoU will serve as a hub for advanced research and analysis, focusing on the biomechanical aspects of cricket, including fast bowlers’ management program and injury prevention, maintenance of players' fitness, science-led coach education including and not limited to course for training of coaches and their support staff, umpires, curators and groundsmen.

In theory a good idea and hopefully one that will help with the management of player's injuries in future.
 
@Saj any latest update on Naseem’s injury? Whats his status now? Any idea..how much time is needed for him to recover and whether he will undergo surgery or not?

He's not had surgery and as yet he has not had any notification that an operation will be required.

I guess the PCB medics are looking for advice from people who actually know what they are doing.
 
btw ihsanullah who was allowed to bowl has further injured his arm.....

Hopefully he won't be doing rehab with pcb fake doctors. Better to do what Shaheen did with his knee injury

Typical of Pakistan cricket.

I don't think he/PCB wanted people to know about the surgery and was therefore saying he hadn't had surgery, but then he and others around him go and share pictures on social media.

Crazy stuff.
 
Wonder if Naseem’s agent had a role to play in his injury. He obviously gets a cut from whatever Naseem earns in all the T20 leagues, I reckon some of our players are being forced to play in leagues just to bring in the cash for the agents.

For agents, the money is these guys playing in T20 leagues around the world.

They don't make money when these boys are just playing for Pakistan.
 
Heads need to roll. Such carelessness leading up to an epic World Cup and where Pakistan had a great opportunity.

So the agent points a gun to his head to play? From Naseem part this is also very reckless. He should have played lesser T20 leauge cricket.
 
If we had Naseem Shah today, this Netherlands team would have gotten all out under 100.

Agree - Players have to take some responsibility and it's not just down to the agents/managers.

It's very easy to keep earning the dollars playing in league after league, but sooner or later it will catch up with you.

I thought the shoulder injury was from a bad dive? Like shaheen last year in t20 World Cup.

I think if Pak cricket had 7/8 bowlers to rotate this wouldn’t be a problem. The fact is they only rely on 3-4 bowlers to play all format cricket then there’s almost nothing done for the other 5 or 6 that could potentially make the step up.

But this problem has been persistent with Pak cricket forever. In 2001 when Sami was in his prime he would get injured and Wasim waqar shohaib would do the rest. After their retirement in 2003 it was umar gul shohaib and naveed ul Hassan. Then from 2009 onwards it was Asif and Amir with occasional others like Sami and gul.

After spot fixing they simply never learnt that relying on only 3 bowlers is a recipe for disaster. As the back ups are just not developed. Remember the attack of tanvir Ahmed and aizaz cheema? Even junaid and irfan were ground down.

It’s not so much just the quantity of leagues. Topley, Willy etc play lots of leagues and only now are considered for national duty. It’s all about gradual development and rest periods with good squad rotation. Pcb are just hopeless only looking at the short term.
 
After this World Cup, it is time to stop playing our best players in bilateral T20 series and even begin to rotate them in ODI series. Then we should be bringing our best players during tournaments in both formats and playing them in Test series.
 
All about priorities isn't it.

Players can make a fortune from these T20 leagues instead of toiling away in Test matches on dead tracks.

There will come a time when Pakistani pacers will opt to play in T20 leagues ahead of playing for their country.
 
If only Naseem was playing tomorrow.

In his words - PCB should have an inquiry into why he is not fit for the World Cup and heads should roll if the inquiry is carried out properly.

Whoever you spoke to should first ask Naseem why he chose to play in LPL whilst carrying a shoulder injury.

Fair point, but players want to play in all tournaments.

I'd also question, who gave him the NOC to play in the LPL.
 
Look like he’s been rushed back. Trundling in at 130 kph even his younger brother is bowling faster than him.

Might go down the route of afridi burn himself to the ground after rushing back from injury. Make no mistake these speed guns are speeded up atleast by 8kph

Don’t think the speed gun is faulty , otherwise Haris would have been clocking 155k but he only managed 145k few times.

All other pacers were slow as well and Ubaid is in rythm because he is bowling consistently since last 3 months so it’s expected he is bowling quicker than his bro.
 
Naseem= injury mismanaged
Shaheen= injury mismanaged
Anwar Ali 06= injury mismanaged
Junaid Khan= injury mismanaged
Mohammad Irfan= injury mismanaged

I’m sure there are more. But off the top of my head.

As I’ve said before, if you’re a fast bowler and you’re employed by the PCB, take your fitness very very seriously, because they won’t be there for you when you get injured and you career hangs in the balance.

You will have to be vigilant and look out for your own health and rehab.

PCB is completely clueless. If you don’t put your foot down, they will run you into the ground by playing you in any and every game whether it’s a WC QF or a dead rubber vs Hong Kong- it doesn’t matter to them.

So speak out and sit out on the games that don’t matter so you are there for that WC QF or test match Vs Aus in Aus.

Yes they may get rid of you. But if you don’t watch out for yourself, your body will give out and they’ll get rid of you anyway.
