MANHATTAN — A video going viral on social media appears to show a heated conversation that turns into an apparent racist, verbal attack on a man in Central Park.

The video shows a woman with her dog several feet away from the camera, allegedly calling the cops because an "African American man" was "threatening [her] life."

In the video, the woman is seen with her off-leash dog in the Ramble at Central Park. Dogs must be leashed in that area of the park.

As she walked toward the man, identified on his Facebook page as Christian Cooper, she asks him to stop recording.

He asks her not to approach him.

That's when she says she is calling police, and says "I'm going to tell them there's an African American man threatening my life."

She repeats the phrase a few times, seeming more distressed each time.

"He is recording me and threatening me and my dog," the woman is heard saying. "I'm being threatened by a man in the Ramble! Please send the cops immediately."

Cooper is not heard making any threats on video.

Then, the video ends with Cooper saying "thank you," having caught her racially-charged reaction on video.

Police responded to the park after the 8:10 a.m. call, officials said.

"Upon arrival, police determined two individuals had engaged in a verbal dispute," an NYPD spokesperson said. "There were no arrests or summonses issued and both parties went on their way."

City Councilman Mark Levine called what happened "disgusting."

"Filling a false police report is a crime," he tweeted. "Being racist is reprehensible. There needs to be accountability for this."

What happened in the moments before the video was taken is unclear, though the man said in the description of the video that he told the woman dogs must be leashed in that area of the park.

The woman allegedly refused, so the man pulled out treats to lure the dog, or convince the owner to leash him.

That's when the video begins, according to Cooper's description.

The video was posted Monday and was said to be taken Monday morning.

Users on social media were critical of the woman's actions.

"I hope the man recording is ok and if the cops came and saw the video, she needs to be arrested for making false and racist claims," said one Facebook user.

"I am so deeply disturbed by this video and how callously she was willing to put your brother's life at risk," said a Twitter user. "How quickly the racism came out. Tons of non-black birders have asked ppl to leash dogs without being threatened with cops. Tell him the NYC birding community is with him!"

Others noted that while she refuses to leash the dog, she holds onto his collar and lifts him up by it.

The Ramble is known as an area great for bird watching. Cooper is said to be an avid birder.

Cooper posted the video to Facebook, and his sister posted the video to Twitter.

"Oh, when Karens take a walk with their dogs off leash in the famous Bramble in NY’s Central Park, where it is clearly posted on signs that dogs MUST be leashed at all times," she said in the post, referencing the 'Karen' internet meme, "and someone like my brother (an avid birder) politely asks her to put her dog on the leash."

Later Monday, Abandoned Angels Cocker Spaniel Rescue said on Twitter said the owner voluntarily surrendered custody of the dog "while this matter is being addressed." The dog was adopted through the rescue a few years ago.

The woman's employer, Franklin Templeton, also released a statement, saying on Twitter she'd been placed on administrative leave.

A white American woman who called the police after a black man asked her to put her dog on a leash in New York City has been suspended from her job with an investment firm.

The man, described as an "avid birder", was concerned the dog could endanger wildlife in Central Park.

"I'm going to tell them [police] there's an African-American man threatening my life," she told him.

A video of the incident posted on social media went viral on Monday.

The woman, identified as Amy Cooper, later apologised, saying she had "overreacted".

Ms Cooper also returned her dog to a rescue centre after allegations of cruelty as she appeared to choke the animal while calling the police.

The man, Christian Cooper (no relation), posted his video of the incident on Facebook and said that it began when he noticed Ms Cooper's dog "tearing through the plantings" in an area of Central Park called the Ramble.

"Ma'am, dogs in the Ramble have to be on the leash at all times. The sign is right there," Mr Cooper says he told Ms Cooper, but she refused to restrain her dog.

He said he was concerned the dog would destroy the habitat in the Ramble, a popular area for bird-watchers.

He says he then offered the dog some treats, as a way to encourage it to leave the woodland.

At some point Mr Cooper began to film Ms Cooper with his mobile phone, and she asked him to stop.

The video shows Ms Cooper calling the police, saying to Mr Cooper "I'm going to tell them there's an African-American man threatening my life."

The video, which was also posted on Twitter by Mr Cooper's sister, has been widely condemned on social media as many point out the high number of killings of black men by police in the US.

Others referred to the high-profile fatal shooting of Ahmaud Arbery, a 25-year-old black man who was out jogging when he was killed by two men in February.

Ms Cooper's employer Franklin Templeton, an investment firm, has suspended her while it investigates the incident, saying on Twitter that "we do not condone racism of any kind."

New York Police Department said no complaints or arrests were made, according to broadcaster NBC.

"We live in an age of Ahmaud Arbery, where black men are gunned down because of assumptions people make about black men, black people, and I'm just not going to participate in that," Mr Cooper told NBC.

Ms Cooper told the outlet, "I sincerely and humbly apologize to everyone, especially to that man, his family."

The incident made her realise that not everyone has the "luxury" of thinking of the police as a "protection agency," she added.

She also returned her dog to the Abandoned Angels Cocker Spaniel Rescue, where she adopted it a few years ago, after allegations that she choked the dog while calling the police.

"The dog is now in our rescue's care and he is safe and in good health," the organisation wrote on Facebook.

Disgusting what the woman did!

The only thing I don't get is why is the employer getting involved?

Huge reputational risk for them - she is there employee and therefore, a reflection of their company culture - so they need to take steps to ensure that they are seen to be doing the right thing.

I understand this. The employer could have just made a statement distancing themselves, and that would have sufficed IMO.

What an employee does outside work shouldn't reflect on how they perform at work. This sets a dangerous precedent IMO.

I know that there are a few examples already of employers firing employees, just don't think its right.

The African American is a former colleague of my gf and also we live on the same street in east village.

On the contrary - what you do away from work but during your employment has direct bearing on the company. You should defo read the employment contract and check with your HR.

I worked in a top-tier bank in London and we were given specific instructions about how our behaviour away from office can also effect the bank - as in this case.

In this case, a person who is allegedly racist outside could easily bring that behaviour to work and that must be a concern.

When you work for a company, you are their rep even during non-working hours. I have a similar contract with my company just like MIG, a top tier Oil & Gas firm, where it clearly states on behavioral norms outside working hours. Lots of people got fired in the past for misconduct during their non-working/personal hours.

That poor dog was getting choked by Karen. That's animal cruelty.

Let's just imagine if there were no video and it were that white woman's word against that African American man

American racists are a different breed. Pathetic individuals.

Ms Cooper told US media she is not racist and was just scared when Mr Cooper "came out of the bush".

She told NBC News: "I sincerely and humbly apologise to everyone, especially to that man, his family.

"It was unacceptable and I humbly and fully apologise to everyone who's seen that video, everyone that's been offended, everyone who thinks of me in a lower light - and I understand why they do."

She forgot to add "My best friend Jamal is black".

I personally want someone like her to go to jail, so that someone in future may think twice of framing an innocent coloured person for threatening them.

She apparently has been fired by her employer.

I think that was a bit too much. She probably has anxiety issues.

White woman fired from job after calling cops over black man in NY Central Park

Denouncing “racism of any kind,” a global investment firm has fired a white woman after a viral video showed her calling police to say she felt threatened by an African-American man who asked her politely to leash her dog in New York’s Central Park.

The video drew outrage on social media where it was viewed more than 30 million times, and the backlash prompted Franklin Templeton, on Tuesday to fire the woman, Amy Cooper.

“Following our internal review of the incident in Central Park yesterday, we have made the decision to terminate the employee involved, effective immediately. We do not tolerate racism of any kind,” the company said on Twitter.

When hours earlier the company put her on administrative leave, Cooper told WNBC she wanted to “sincerely and humbly apologize” to the man, Christian Cooper, who is no relation.

She turned over the dog to Abandoned Angels Cocker Spaniel Rescue Inc.

It was the latest racially tense confrontation to go viral. The U.S. Justice Department is investigating as a hate crime a black jogger’s fatal shooting by white men in Georgia and captured on video.

Melody Cooper, Christian’s sister who posted the latest video, called the dog owner a Karen, slang used to describe a middle-aged white woman perceived to be entitled.

“Oh, when Karens take a walk with their dogs off leash in the famous Bramble in NY’s Central Park, where it is clearly posted on signs that dogs MUST be leashed at all times, and someone like my brother (an avid birder) politely asks her to put her dog on the leash,” Melody Cooper wrote.

“I’m going to call the cops,” Amy Cooper tells Christian Cooper on the video, apparently shot on Monday with a cellphone camera. “I’m going to tell them there’s an African-American man threatening my life.”

“Please tell them whatever you like,” Christian Cooper responds on the video.

A white woman who called the police on a black man while he was bird watching in New York has been charged by police.

Amy Cooper is accused of falsely reporting an incident in the third degree, the district attorney of New York has said.

It comes after Ms Cooper told police Christian Cooper was "threatening her life" during a dog walk in Central Park.

In footage of the incident, which was filmed by Mr Cooper, Ms Cooper is seen asking him to stop filming her.

When he refuses, she tells him she will call the police and say an "African American man is threatening my life".

Ms Cooper is later seen making the call and telling the 911 call handler: "There is a man, African-American, he has a bicycle helmet - he is recording me and threatening me and my dog."

Appearing to become hysterical, she then adds: "Please send the cops immediately!"

In a statement published online on Monday, district attorney Cy Vance Jr said: "Today our office initiated a prosecution of Amy Cooper for falsely reporting an incident in the third degree.

"Our office will provide the public with additional information as the case proceeds. At this time I would like to encourage anyone who has been the target of false reporting to contact our office. We are strongly committed to holding perpetrators of this conduct accountable."

After the incident, Mr Cooper published the footage on Facebook.

He said the row began when he pointed out a sign that states dogs must be on a lead in the area, which is known as the Ramble.

He said she claimed it was too dangerous, before he tried to give the dog a "treat" and she warned him off as the altercation escalated and he began filming.

Ms Cooper, who had been a head of insurance portfolio management at Franklin Templeton, was later fired from her job.

The incident came amid a spate of police killings of black people across the country.

Many who saw the video accused Ms Cooper of unnecessarily endangering Mr Cooper's life by falsely claiming to police that he was threatening her.

A white woman who called police on a black man bird watching in New York's Central Park made a second call accusing him of attempted assault, prosecutors say.

Amy Cooper appeared in court on Wednesday charged with falsely reporting an incident.

A viral video showed Ms Cooper threatening Christian Cooper, no relation, with the police when he asked her to put her dog on a lead.

The incident happened on Memorial Day.

It took place on the same day in May that unarmed black man George Floyd died in police custody in Minneapolis, triggering weeks of national and global anti-racism protests.

Ms Cooper lost her job and dog after the incident, and publicly apologised.

The defendant did not enter a plea when she appeared before the judge on Wednesday, but the prosecutor said the team was pursuing "a resolution of this case which holds Ms Cooper accountable while healing our community, restoring justice, and deterring others from perpetuating this racist practice".

The charge of filing a false report is punishable by up to one year in jail.

Christian Cooper, who is prominent in the New York bird watching community, filmed his encounter with Ms Cooper, 41, after he asked her to put her dog on a lead to keep it from scaring away birds.

Mr Cooper, 57, said he offered the dog treats, as a way to convince Ms Cooper to contain her dog.

In response, Ms Cooper called emergency services. She told them: "I'm in the Ramble," - a wooded area in Central Park - "there is a man, African American, he has a bicycle helmet and he is recording me and threatening me and my dog," as her tone rose in apparent distress.

"I am being threatened by a man in the Ramble, please send the cops immediately!" she said.

Prosecutors said that, in the second, previously unreported call, Ms Cooper repeated her accusation and said he had "tried to assault her". She admitted to the police who responded to her call that the male had made no physical contact with her.

Mr Cooper, in a statement to CNN on Wednesday, said his focus "has been and continues to be on fixing policing and addressing systemic racism like we saw in that incident".
