In Asia’s biggest promotion: Pakistan unleash their Wolverine

KARACHI: Pakistan’s rising Mixed Martial Arts star Ahmed ‘Wolverine’ Mujtaba is set to make his debut at ONE: DEFENDING HONOR, Asia’s biggest promotion, making him just the third fighter from the country to do so.

Something has to give in the fight at Singapore’s Indoor Stadium as two unbeaten records clash, with the unbeaten Mujtaba taking on unbeaten local talent Benedict Ang today.

A chance to showcase their talent at such an occasion would have most folks psyched up, but 23-year-old Mujtaba is feeling melancholic with the anticipation of what usually ensues after his fights.

Ahmed Mujtaba signs for Asia’s biggest MMA promotion

In his young, blossoming career, Mujtaba has notched up seven straight victories. But not even that incredible streak has earned him the adulation and recognition he thinks he deserves.

Even two featherweight titles at UnderGround Battle Championship and World Series of Fighting Global Championship didn’t bring along any government help, sponsorship money, media attention or fan recognition.

His opponents may not be able to touch him, but his own people are killing him.

Bashir Ahmad finishes off Egyptian opponent in opening round

“If my performance does not earn me the appreciation I deserve this time around, I will have to do something drastic,” Mujtaba told The Express Tribune from Kallang, Singapore. “I’ve said this before, I am a hot commodity internationally and I have offers from other countries to move there and fight for them.”

However, Mujtaba hopes it won’t come to that. “Despite financial problems, I have resisted those offers because I love Pakistan. But since no one here can be bothered to take notice, maybe I should leave.”

When asked what has led him to even consider such a decision, Mujtaba explained: “There is no money in my sport at domestic level whatsoever. My university BIUTEMS and a few generous people have supported my career, but the long grind wears you down.”

He continued: “My fights have begun to generate some buzz, but that happens only in the immediate aftermath. People forget me after five or six days and then I am back to square one — hustling for finances to support my career.”

In contrast, Mujtaba says the response he has gotten from fans in Singapore has been unbelievable. “Since I came here, everybody has been so courteous and respectful. Fans have flocked me for autographs and I’ve done several media interviews too. It’s a different world here from an MMA point of view.”

With that digression, Mujtaba came back to the matter at hand, which is to face Ang. “I promise this will be a bloodbath,” he said. “Acquiring a Singaporean visa wasn’t easy, plus you know how people with green passports are treated at airports. I am upset and I will take it out on Ang.”

Clearly vexed and having so many things on his mind before a big fight is usually a recipe for disaster in the volatile world of cagefighting, but Mujtaba promises that despite the plethora of distractions he is fully focused on his fight.

“We were required to weigh at 70kgs for this fight, but I worked so hard and followed my diet plan with such diligence that I am now a kilo under my target,” he added. “I am fully prepared for this fight, and will look to knock out Ang in the opening round. I have a reputation of being a submission expert, which is why I want to show my range and prove that I can stand and trade blows too.”

Mujtaba’s fight with Ang will be broadcast live on ONEfc.com at 4pm PST.

why is the guy with the beard leaning over so much with his hip? that looks anything but tough.

The red-haired guy is the one with the aggressive posture and seems like he has a word or two to say. The Pakistani is silent, confident, sizing his prey. Like a Wolverine.

At least he doesn't dye his hair. :hafeez2
Edit: Apologies if it's naturally red. :inzi

Well Pakistanis love fighting. Soon we'll be having our own "cage rage".

The "anything but tough" Pakistani wolverine ripped apart the red-haired poser.

Extended his unbeaten streak to 8-0.

Wow Pakistan sportsman in a physical sport? hope this doesnt end in tears.

I could act like Wolverine too. I am short, hairy and can grow a nice beard; But I prefer acting like myself as opposed to a cartoon character. :P

Here is another recent fight of a Pakistani taking care of an Indian. Enjoy.....
There is a lot of rage in Pak fighters.

I find his sense of entitlement pathetic. For the last few weeks, he and his team have started running this campaign on social media regarding how he is 'fighting for the nation' and 'sacrificing himself for the country', and how he is willing to represent some other country if he does not get the appreciation in Pakistan.

First of all, nobody forced him to become an MMA fighter and he is not fighting for the country; he is simply doing it because it is his passion and he wants to be in this field. That's all. He is not making any sacrifice for Pakistan and nor is he doing any ehsaan on the country.

Secondly, by whinging on social media over how he is not loved in the country and is not famous, he will not help his cause. You cannot demand respect and adulation. If people in Pakistan don't care about MMA then that is how it is.

Yes he needs financial help and endorsements etc., but it is the job of the sporting authorities of Pakistan. They are the ones who are supposed to help him. There is no point in complaining about the people in general. You cannot force them to take interest in your sport or to consider you a national hero.

If he wants to whine his way to another country, good riddance I'd say. Couldn't care less for someone with such stinky attitude.

Ignore you watch the actual fight on UFC it's hilarious

Mujtaba has decent grappling skills the red haired dude stays dormant most the fight and occasionally shows some amazing reflexes and strikes

Mujtaba celebrates by showing his dancing moves as the ref holds his hand

Not enough combos by either fighter
Mujtaba looks like a decent fighter

The "wolverine" from Baluchistan knocked out Rahul Raju from India in under a minute the other day.

Did he win more because he was good, or was it just that the Indian guy was bad?

I dont watch MMA that much, so pardon the ignorance.

Now india will say he was participating without NOC from indian government and his participation is not recognised
Like they did with kabaddi team

Nice trolling..
Mujtaba has a far superior record than the Karaila Krusher..

it is newsworthy only because the unexpected happened. otherwise any average indian male can easily take down 2 (some say 5, but i disagree) average pakistanis easily.

There were no celebrations in india or media when he defeated a Pakistani before

classic david versus goliath. Always great to see when the underdog wins.

We should really consult the Chinese so we can get better. Apparently their one tiny guy can take out quite a few Indians in brawls, if one is to believe the soldiers brawl at the border.
Our guys gotta learn that Kung fu crap so we can fix this massive indian superiority.
ROFL!

ambush and guerilla warfare is a different topic. ceteris paribus (the key word here), an average indian can take down 3 average chinese if not more.

How big is the average Indian? Watch the YouTube videos of all the various travellers that visit both sides of the wagha border, most would describe the Indians as scrawny compared to the Pakistan sides guards. Granted India may have more firepower but I would safely say the average Pakistani would easily match or overpower an Indian or Bengali for that matter who are probably the smallest.

This is too easy for CricketCartoons :genius

On topic, Mujtaba has a good record at this level. Hope we produce a fighter who can compete at UFC.

Your sarcasm is actually very good! And you say it with such a straight face, most people believe it and start arguing lol.

Congratulations to the Pakistani guy, hope the Indian Guy is alright

I do watch MMA fight. The balance of Rahul was very poor on punching. Haven't watched his play but seems like he isn't ready as of yet.

Maybe.. in close quarters where achar a d chatni induced Indian farts don’t have any place to escape too, yes I can see that happening!

Dude we just joke around. He doesn’t mean it. He is being sarcastic as am I.

Lovely over hand right by the Pak fighter, caught him clean as a whistle.

Indians may beat Pakistanis in cricket but MMA, 9/10 Paks would crush them.

Pakistan Tv should air all UFC, MMA fights, a real opportunity for many youth to become famous and rich.

What a fight.

Pak normally do win these kind of competitions against Indian's. I am not celebrating though, i didn't even know it was happening:misbah

Wow hope this guy keeps rising in the sport good for him.

Karachi: Former speedster Shoaib Akhtar met Pakistan’s MMA Fighter Ahmed Mujtaba in Islamabad after returned to the country, winning his fight against India’s Rahul Raju in Singapore.

Mujtaba stunned the MMA fraternity by knocking out his Indian counterpart in just 56 seconds to win his lightweight match at One Championship Unbreakable III.

Prior to his fight, Akhtar promised the fighter to receive him at the airport on his return as a victor. But, Mujtaba asked him to not come to the airport due to the current COVID-19 pandemic and promised him a meetup soon.

Now, both have met in Islamabad and Mujtaba shared the moment on his Instagram. “Inshallah great things coming ahead. Being a Role model for Youth I will do my best so that our upcoming talent can do wonders as well. Thank you, for the love and support. Remember me in your prayers,” he wrote.

It must be noted here that this win was Mujtaba’s third win on the global stage and it has also improved his overall record to 10-2.

One Championship seems to feature a lot more Asian fighters, although they also have some big names from the UFC who have moved across like ATG Demetrius Johnson.

Anyway, that KO was brutal, poor Indian guy was starched, leg quivering and everything. Hope he is ok and recovered fully.

Come on fellas, give these Warriors their respect. Don't say "Pakistani" guy this and "Indian" guy that. Say their names!

That said, it was clean knock out by Mujtaba.
Raju has a decent wins in MMA his career as well.

When things get established, I can see Pakistan (especially) KPK producing exciting MMA fighters.

Respect the sport and be a sportsman. There should be no joy in “phenti lagayi, hospital mein hai” etc. that’s rather poor from Shoaib and a bit cocky Wolverine. They change the tone later in the video but it left a poor taste for me. Be humble In victory because you could be the one on the gurney next time you face an Indian fighter.

P.S best wishes to Raju, I hope he makes a full and quick recovery.

Good to see them exchanging flags at the end of the fight. Although not sure if the Indian fighter was sullen or just couldn't emote as well due to the swollen face.

Why only KPK?

Any province can produce exciting MMA fighters, need to stop with the over exotification of certain parts of the country as that can dehumanize people

That's all you can gloat about, beating an indian in violence. Beat us in spelling bee and then talk.

It's so easy when you fill the stage with south indians bring the north indians than we'll have a equal competition :ashwin

He was actually respectful from the start and it is understandable because he knows what it takes to reach this level and how much dedication and talent you need.

He knocked out the Indian guy without any fuss but as a fellow fighter, he has respect for him and his skills, he knows there is a reason why he is competing at this level and and he also understands that he could also have been on the receiving end and this could happen to him in the future.

Shoaib on the other hand was his usual dehati self before toning it down when he realized that Ahmed Mujtaba was not playing along.

:))) issue is these kids are prepared from very early age, like Tennis-football , the competition is very tough.. i can’t imagine the mental tormenting but I see so many of these kids enjoying it.

Such an attritional bout. Both of them have solid cardio. Good MMA all around.
