Pakistan Cricket Board today announced an increase of PKR100,000 across all three pension categories under the PCB Players’ Welfare Policy.

The increase means cricketers who have played in 10 or less Tests will now receive a monthly pension of PKR142,000, players who have played between 11 and 20 Tests will receive PKR148,000 and players who have featured in 21 or more Tests will receive PKR154,000.

In a major amendment to the policy, the PCB also announced the pension will be transferred to the widow in the unfortunate event of a Test cricketer’s demise. Previously, the legal heirs of the cricketer were only entitled to receive a onetime payment equivalent to 12 months’ benefit calculated according to the bracket under which the pension was being paid to the cricketer.

The PCB Players’ Welfare Policy was last updated in January 2019. To ensure there were no future delays in the increase in the pension amounts, the PCB also confirmed there will be an annual inflation increase.

PCB Chairman Ramiz Raja: “It gives me immense pleasure and happiness to announce the increase in pension amounts and other amendments to the PCB Players’ Welfare Policy. With a former cricketer at the helm of Pakistan cricket affairs, the expectation was that I will always protect and look after the interests and welfare of all present and past cricketers. I am delighted that I have been able to fulfil another of my commitments and have amended the policy in such a way that there will now be an annual increase in the pension amounts.

“While improving the pension amounts, we have also ensured security for a cricketer’s widow. As a former cricketer, I know and understand the sacrifices of the families, particularly the spouses that allow cricketers to fulfil their ambitions and dreams of representing their country at the highest level. I am confident this incremental increase of the pension policy will give a lot of peace and satisfaction to the cricketers as well as their families.

“The PCB is an institution that has a proud history of respecting and appreciating its cricketers. These amendments to the PCB Players’ Welfare Policy are a testament to our commitment and on behalf of this organisation, I once again assure all retired cricketers that we will continue to support them in any way we can, be it through the PCB Players’ Welfare Policy or the PCB Benevolent Fund, which exists to support and help cricketers facing financial challenges and hardships.”

The latest changes to the PCB Players’ Welfare Policy will come into effect from 1 July 2022 and cricketers who have reached the age of 60 and above, will be able to benefit.

Good idea to take care of older cricketers. A good society takes care of its elders and its heroes.

I do think, first and foremost, PCB should make this a self sustaining scheme. That means a contributory scheme which is invested in a fund - like corporates do. Particularly from current cricketers onwards. This will ensure pensions do not become a massive drag on PCB resources over time, negatively impact investment in the game and results on the pitch.

Secondly, policy favors elite test cricketers - which is great. But I'd suggest first class cricketers should get a contributory scheme as well. They have a few years of their lives where they can earn. And they earn a fraction of what test cricketers earn anyway.

A good start but must turn from populist to impactful.

Waste of money!!! Any average cricketers earn more than 10x money than general people just as salary. Now they will get more than 1000000 PKR where many people don’t even get pension.
PCB should invest this money for players development facilities, proper pitches, better coaches & technology.

This is great to honour their services.

I hope the PCB has found a corporate sponsor for this.

Peanuts...... Especially if they are living on rent

Should had been atleast 150, 000 with an increment of 10% each year maybe

Can the PCB afford this?

what makes you think PCB cannot afford this? 1 lakh rupees is just peanuts for the service these guys have given. Especially considering that majority of our ex cricketers gave service during the time when they did not get a proper return against it.

if this an increment on already existing than its good enough. I think the pension that they were getting was 40,000 to 50,000.

Anyways, it is important that a 10% increment is given every year, especially to the widows

Suddenly the sniping ex-players turned YouTubers will be singing praises of PCB.

Anyway it's the right thing to do, at least cricketers know they'll have some financial security post-retirement.

It is a motivational offer and an excellent opportunity for the budding cricketers to work hard and play for Pakistan.

It says the 100 000 is an increase to top up exisiting pensions so that's great.

The more people see cricket as a game which can support them even when old, even if they don't get rich- the more viable the career path comes to more people of all economic backgrounds.

No one wants to see past players living in poverty or struggling.

Ramiz is doing ok from what it seems to me.

Reforming bloated FC structure- tick.

Looking to improve pitches (drop ins planned & seeking expert advice from Oz who worked out now how to not make them bland roads)- tick.

Honouring past players/player welfare & pension structure- tick.

Hosting tours succesfully- tick.

Next step must be facilities & grassroots- pathways through city/region clubs/juniors into FC.

Along with that- "A" (Shaheens?) tours to bridge the gap between FC & tests.

Yes - money in tummy makes people do strange things!

And the Indian version for comparison

Jay Shah, the Secretary of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), on Monday announced an increase in the monthly pension of former cricketers and match officials. Shah, made the announcement on Twitter and also stated that due to this decision, around 900 personnel will be benefitted. "I'm pleased to announce an increase in the monthly pension of former cricketers (men & women) and match officials. Around 900 personnel will avail of this benefit and close to 75% of personnel will be beneficiaries of a 100% raise," tweeted Shah.

“It is extremely important that the financial well-being of our former cricketers is taken care of. The players remain the lifeline and as a Board, it is our duty to be by their side once their playing days are over. The umpires have been unsung heroes and the BCCI truly values their contribution,” Sourav Ganguly, BCCI president, said in a statement.

This announcement from Shah came on Day 2 of the ongoing e-auction for IPL media rights.

Last month, Shah had also announced a Rs 1.25 crore prize money for groundsmen and curators of all six venues that hosted IPL 2022.

"I'm pleased to announce a prize money of INR 1.25 crores for the men who gave us the best games in #TATAIPL 2022. The unsung heroes - our curators and groundsmen across 6 IPL venues this season," Shah had written on Twitter.

"We've witnessed some high octane games and I would like thank each one of them for their hard work. 25 lacs each for CCI, Wankhede, DY Patil and MCA, Pune. 12.5 lacs each for Eden and Narendra Modi Stadium," he added.

The league stage matches of IPL 2022 were played across Maharashtra. Qualifier 1 and Eliminator were played at Eden Gardens, Kolkata while Qualifier 2 and Final were played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Kolkata.

Pakistan Cricket Foundation

The BoG approved the creation of the Pakistan Cricket Foundation as a charitable trust. This is part of the PCB’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative with an aim to look after the welfare and wellbeing of its retired cricketers, match officials, scorers and ground staff. The eligibility and qualification criteria will be announced in due course.

As a starting point, the BoG has approved, in principle, an allocation (donation) of PKR100million to the Pakistan Cricket Foundation over the course of the forthcoming financial year.

Ramiz Raja: “This project was always very close to my heart and in this background, I am grateful to the BoG, which has given us an approval to proceed with setting up the Pakistan Cricket Foundation. Through this foundation, we will further look after the wellbeing of those retired cricketers, match officials, scorers and ground staff who are facing severe hardships.

“Now that the BoG has approved a donation of PKR100million, we will invite donors and sponsors to contribute and raise funds so that we have sufficient money in our coffers to look after all those in desperate need of the fund’s assistance and support

Social Welfare is the Govt's responsibility. The PCB's responsibility is to current active cricketers only and its employees. Don't agree with this, this will be an unnecessary drain to the PCB.

Does the ECB, Cricket Australia, Cricket South Africa e.t.c. give pensions to ex players?

Would be better if the ones in need get it who are mostly those who played less than 20 tests I believe (or more than 50-60 FC matches)
Players who have played extensive international international cricket are less likely to rely on "funds". I think 1.5 lac would help guys with less international cricket under their belt(don't want to name) rather than guys like Wasim, Miandad, Afridi, Inzi etc.

Good to see some concrete steps being taken.

Upto our cricketers to also try and ensure that they plan ahead for days when they will retire and not hope to be playing along until age 60!
