In today's Rajasthan vs Punjab game, Riyan Parag came up with a different tactic to try to stop Chris Gayle:

Surely one of the strangest action balls I've seen. Not even Malinga or Kedar Jadhav's round arm bowling had such a horizontal arm. He's brilliant just to get that on target.

Wow! Thats pretty weird, maybe just borderline legal as he goes down enough to have his hand just about shoulder height. Still umpires should keep an eye.
 
You can see what he was trying to do, angle the ball across towards Gayle's pads.

However, if he had collapsed his knee and bowled with the straight arm action, he would have attained the same general delivery.
 
There is obviously value in surprising the batsman, and Parag was bowling to the Universe Boss :))

Of course, probably not something Parag do too often. His main job anyway is batting, he is the youngest batsman to score a fifty in IPL.

Why? Elbow is not bent outside legal limits and hand is above the waist.

Technically speaking, an underarm delivery is one in which the bowler's hand does not rise above the level of the waist. The Laws of Cricket now (2000 Code) declare that an underarm delivery is illegal unless otherwise agreed before the match.[6]
A delivery is a no-ball if it bounces more than twice before passing the popping crease: an underarm delivery cannot be performed rolling along the ground. A pitched underarm delivery is a good ball, providing it only pitches once, and providing the opposing captain has agreed beforehand that the style may be used.

It's not about a bent elbow or not, it is about the degree of straightening which shouldn't go above 15 degrees.

You can bowl with a bit of bent elbow, for as long as the straightening isn't above the limit.

This is a bit difficult to measure because it doesn't go through the normal rotation and could lead to a slippery road down the line.
 
i used to bowl these in backyard cricket, can act as a surprise ball, esp if u pitch it back of a length and it skids on, if u want one dot ball then the surprise factor can do that i guess, didnt think anyone would try it in a professional game tho.
 
Lol at some people bringing up quality of IPL again n again as if they just can't accept the bitter truth that it is the Top League

What has Ryan Parag bowling with slingy action got anything to do with quality? Malinga did it throughout his Career. Parag is just a a part timer.

In fact i appreciate such street smart people. As a competitor you try to do anything you can to get advantage, as long as it's withing the rule.

Not sure about the baseball comparison. Baseball pitchers can legally straighten their arms, which Parag did not.

The umpire had a word with him after the delivery. That's how dodgy the delivery was. He didn't bowl another delivery like it again.

So before you start calling others immature for questioning what is clearly a dodgy action; have a word with the umpires first; listen to the commentators, then you can pass your judgement on maturity.
 
Sorry to me he chucked flung that should have been called a no ball.

Making a mockery of the gentleman's game, already this pyjama league has led to the death of cricket the last thing we need is this sort of mockery of the game to be allowed
 
I love how some fans are using this picture to put down IPL.

if you want to see the qualitative difference you only had to watch the IPL game and the Pakistan/ SA game side by side.

Wow. I never knew you could bowl as low as just above the waist. So you could technically bowl with the arm angled below shoulder height? Imagine a bowler bowling all his balls like this.

Nah, the waist doesn't have anything to do with it, the arm has to reach the horizontal.

Laws 21.2 Fair delivery - the arm
A ball is fairly delivered in respect of the arm if, once the bowler’s arm has reached the level of the shoulder in the delivery swing...

Genuinely interested to know if Malinga's arm reached the level of the shoulder at the point of delivery, won't be surprised if there were occasions when the sling was from a lower trajectory.

Malinga would actually generally have his arm well above his head at some point in his action. He'd also drop his body quite a bit so his point of release would usually comfortably be above his shoulders if not still above his head.
 
IPL is a circus league where big names gather to make money, party. They do not put even half of their actual capabilities in the games.

I have watched him bat live for the first time. What a talent he is. He is 100 times better some losers that played for Pakistan in the lower middle order recently

The entire rule reads "A ball is fairly delivered in respect of the arm if, once the bowler's arm has reached the level of the shoulder in the delivery swing, the elbow joint is not straightened partially or completely from that instant until the ball has left the hand".

It doesn't say anywhere in the rule that "once the bowler's arm has reached the level of the shoulder in the delivery swing" it may not proceed to dip below the shoulder before the ball has left the hand.

Yes that's why the players constantly break bones and get major injuries and look so much under pressure. Once in a while its good to come put of fantasies and SEE what's happening in the real world, what you want to happen is not whats actually happening

I didn't suggest it did, getting the ball above shoulder height and then having it below shoulder height at the point of release is going to be make it pretty difficult to bowl a legal delivery though given the angles.

What makes you think that performers don't break bones and get injured in a Circus? Apart from IPL have you even watched a circus in your life ? :inti
 
He is an Indian player so no rules of ICC for him....
Trust me even in our gully mohalla cricket he wouldn't have been allowed to bowl....
This is a black mark on cricket,IPL,BCCI and ICC

Its amazing how people were defending this guy's action for 6 years and across 7 icc tournaments and when banned, defended his honour and said the rules needed modification but are up in arms about Riyan. :)

Yes. BCCI rules the cricket. Even though it's a legal delivery, BCCi rules the cricket world. Everyone should have accepted it 10 years ago.

Go back in history and you will find answers. The rule was bent more than his arm to ensure ban. That happened after murli and bhajji retired. He kept getting cleared by ICC since 2008, and then ICC had to change the rule to ensure his action becomes illegal. So legal because illegal for Indian fans like you. How is that even acceptable for an organizational body?

Murali had a genuine elbow issue. Bhajji was a chucker. Akmal just took it to the next level.
 
:)) Maybe I need to finally watch the IPL, I've never seen a single match but gotta verify if it's the "world's best league"

ICC did not change any rule. They just started enforcing it better from 2014. Ajmal lied through his teeth and claimed he could not bowl with a straight arm and then bowled with a perfectly straight arm on comeback.

Except ICC didn't change any rules. What bowlers like Ajmal were doing was that they were chucking in matches but not in tests. ICC just changed the test so that even in testing your acton needed to be super imposed on your match action.

didn't change the rules but changed the test. They changed the test methodologies as well. Go check it out. I vivid remember that methodology puts majority spinners and bowlers over the limit. And the timing was perfect, before world cup. I call that changing the rules. One day you have clean action in 2014, the other day you don't, just due to the test. Come on! I call it unfair and cheating as well.

In terms of chucking Parags action here would pretty much be as clean as an action could possibly be. The arm only reaches the shoulder height a tiny fraction of a second before release therefore there's no time for any change in the angle at the elbow.

There are just frustrated rants. Provide facts to prove your argument, as per what law Riyan was chucking.
Harbjahans action was reported and then he came back after re-testing and action modification.
Jadhav also has not been reported by ICC till now to my knowledge.
