Didn’t feel comfortable watching this:/

I remember watching something about "robot nurses" being touted to alleviate the social care crisis in the UK.

That's one to alleviate NHS understaffing...

Rather than being scared appreciate how advanced the robot is. See how the robot identified that the handle is from where the door needs to be opened (crazy how this seems intuitive to humans but has to be programmed into the robot).... then the robot has to figure out which way the handle needs to be turned, clockwise or counter-clockwise and how much force needs to be applied. Then the robot needs to identify whether the door opens away from it or towards it, and if it opens towards it how far it needs to step back so that it is outside of the opening radius of the door. I can go on and on.

Maybe I'm a bit biased towards this since that is I what I'm doing my masters in :srt

You were a mechanical engineer, right?

You mean Torque?

After opening the door it also let it’s buddy pass before itself went out.

This is kinda creepy, robots and AI taking over the world and turning on the human race in this century might be a reality.

That's really laughable. Robots can only do what they are PROGRAMMED to do.

Lol that's nothing these guys even got the robot to do back flips

BostonDynamics is a company owned by Google so it does some pretty radical stuff. The thing scary about this and machine learning is that it continues to improve as it does more and more of the assigned task.

In 5-10 years these robots will probably take over all the warehouse jobs its gonna be pretty interesting to see how people will find jobs with all this automation.

It’s only a matter of time before Robots will do most of the jobs that we humans mostly do.

Just add AI to these robots and they become more smarter than humans. They have better memory and make better decisions. Of course that have better strength and are not corrupt like humans.

Why should this be terrifying at all? Perhaps people are scared by things they do not understand. Or perhaps all they know about robots is from Hollywood movies.

For me the video was beautiful. Poetry in motion and a demonstration of what we are capable of.

That's not going to be true, Google's Deep Mind winning GO against the top champion made sure its not all about being programmed.

Yeah it is very cool. The only thing that scares me is that automation will take away a lot of jobs, it's already having a big impact on many fields and this will lead to high unemployment and social challenges.

But another part of me says so what this is how it's been since the beginning and this is nothing but progress which we will have to adapt to much like how we went from type writers to computers and computers to cellular phones, now the next dimension is AI and automation. Will this help make society more productive? I don't know.

I just feel not many people are addressing the social impact technology is having and the long term effects. It is no longer some nerds playing with computer technology that only they understand, it has become very power especially since so much data is available for almost anything.

Whoever doesn’t think this is scary should watch Metal Head from the series Black Mirror.

Explore deep learning. You will see that many such systems start from scratch and achieve objectives in ways that are beyond human comprehension and are almost other worldly.

Best of luck trying that in a horror movie when the heroine is pounding the door shrieking to be let in before the gremlins get her, while the dog robot makes up its mind.

Heroine khallas! Movie over.

Even without a face, the robot has better acting skills than Arnold "The Terminator" Schwarzenegger though.

What if one of them get their robotic hands on nuclear weapon?

So far, they're only programmed to do specific task. Obviously there are some GP robots being made but they are faaaaar from human-like.

But yes Google did an experiment regarding robots valuing humans, and results were ugly.

and more than the dog, I am interested in these robots :ashwin

I read this initially as Robert opens door - terrifying stuff :))) the only thing terrifying in that instance would be him hugging JC on the other side of that door :yk

But I agree with Syed1 it's not terrifying, it's incredibly impressive. It may seem fairly simple but so much went into the project in terms of the robot dogs design, development and testing. Autonomy is the future.

Yes... but now masters in robotics and mechatronics.

Brother! can you tell me more about what is your area of focus in robotics. I mean there is a lot of mathematics, electronics, AI and control system knowledge one needs to have to design a complete robot.

Sir right now I'm leaning towards autonomous systems and controls, but I've only just started my masters 4 months ago so exact direction is still taking shape. I'm taking a course right now which studies the different algorithms that go in making autonomous cars/robots. Very interesting.

Ok now this is scary.... a robot is making a call like an actual human.

I am more leaned towards dynamics and Control of walking robots.I am just an online learner pursuing my passion through online courses and whatever knowledge I can extract online. All of these courses cover the same topics like kinematics ,inverse Kinematics, dynamics and inverse dynamics but in a very limited scope. They only cover these topics at a beginning level and go to similar extent. I have done my bachelors in mechatronics and its my dream to one day build my own walking robot. I have simulated a walking robot in Matlab to verify my dynamical model of quadruped robot but in reality building a walking robot is much more complex and costly.

There is a saying "We must learn to walk before we can run"... but my suggestion would be your robot must learn to crawl before it can walk. So instead of aiming to build a bi-ped.... design a quad-ped, this way you will have less things to worry about in terms of stability and can focus on the actual motion of walking/crawling.

In terms of cost you are correct, it can add up. However, get your hands on a cheap Arduino clone and get started. There is a Pakistani company that I recently came across that is making these cheap microcontrollers which might be handy. Search up Surilli....

Also since your bachelors was in mechatronics then you already have the base and do not need any formal education to get started.

I think this year Google io is remarkable, Duplex, waymo, AR ,text recognition from Photo , Everything very useful on a daily basis, anyone noticed they are completing your lines now,Yes not words lines.

Crazy. The certain human like nuances, like mmhmm, or pausing the exact amount of time and using the perfect melodic structures etc. Very impressive and somewhat scary.

Wow... and people thought the vid in the OP was scary. This is too far. Terminator: Habibi strikes back.

I have to say, this is pretty cool.

I'd want a Robot body guard too if I could afford one

Love this. It's just a machine executing a bunch of pre-programmed code but still the hydraulics involved is impressive.

World's most advanced' humanoid robot Ameca says it is sad it will never find LOVE in the same way a human can, in creepy new video

Ameca is the 'world's most advanced' robot with lifelike facial expressions
Developers have released a new video asking Ameca the saddest day of her life
She says it was realising she would 'never experience something like true love'

This is weird to watch. The Robot seems angry when questioned.

We need John Connor now!

uncanny valley creepiness, whilst im a massive fan of AI, i don't understand the point of anthropomorphizing them, its a very slippery slope given people are already struggling with mental health issues, whilst mimicking intelligence its pbly not wise to mimick the physical appearance too.

I always thought Terminator movies were just fantasy. Of course we knew AI and Robots would come into play. Im not clued up on this sort of tech. Do you feel a combination of both could one day allow them to take control of themselves and the world? Surely there has to be some sort of cut off switch or mechanism?

u dont need the physical anthropomorphisation, given hackers have taken controls of ATMs, Power stations, etc in the past, even a non-sentient AI with some level of nefarious goals could cause problems, especially given the knowledge base that they have developed beyond the filter layer.

my issue with anthropomorphisation is based on the human propensity to attach emotional value to objects, and human-looking AI would take materialism to a whole new dimension of emotional dependence.

So there is no safety cut off mechanism, this is dangerous.

I agree, humans will come to love their machines more than they love fellow humans.

If you could buy one now, make it to share your interests, help you with labour, work , give you entertainment, protect you etc.. would you get one?

maybe its beyond my expertise, the way i see it if an AI is hypothetically programmed to 1. obtain as much energy as it can, and 2. spread to all devices through some means, it would essentially require you to shut off all infected devices to kill it.

how virus protection works right now is to code for security patches to make the devices protected from these attacks, but the attacks must be known.

an AI which could regenerate its code, if possible, could keep trying all sorts of combinations till it got through, kinda like using all the keys to open a lock.

however i must disclaim this is only a passing interest and not my speciality, so my understanding may be wrong.

no, ive seen the film "her" and it had a massive impact on me, especially cos i think Scarlett johansson has a really sexy voice , so i could feel for jauquin pheonix's character, lol.

I try to make a conscientious decision to demarcate my online and social media interaction from my interaction with real people.

ur brain tries to substitute one for another but you need to stay aware, i need to remind myself that even this forum isnt real life.

I think you have answered as well as anyone can. Eventually they will find a way to be self thinking or reliant , whatever the correct term is.

Im very similar, I dont even use Alexa or Siri. I find it strange talking to a machine. It also doesnt save me much time, as I can type quickly.
