[VIDEO] Samit Patel Discussion Thread

Very nice play on the title.

Not a fan of Samit, but he is effective.

King also dropped Patel on the outskirts of Brisbane and made him run the eight miles back to his gym in 30c heat.

Wonder if he stopped off at the local samosa joint on the way, to 're-fuel'.

There is no excuse for a pro sportsman to be so fat in this day and age. Samit looks more like a darts player than he does a cricketer.

However, he seems like a nice guy and has talent. Hopefully he'll overcome his problems with food and make a heavy impact in the test scene :)

England's biggest threat to India. Be very very afraid Indians. :moyo

Samit Patel eager to resume England Test career in West Indies series

Samit Patel has insisted he is ready to resume his Test career – and has targeted next month’s series against West Indies for a potential comeback.

With Liam Dawson struggling to justify his tag as England’s No 1 slow bowler, Patel – who bowls useful left-arm spin – believes his batting form with Nottinghamshire would make him a good option for the middle order.

Successive scores of 257 not out and 247 against Gloucestershire and Leicestershire have convinced him that he can add to his six Test caps, all gained in Asia between 2012 and 2015.

‘It’s very frustrating,’ he said. ‘I’d played all my cricket in England, so you can’t just get pigeon-holed as a subcontinental cricketer.

‘One of my biggest regrets is that I’ve not played Test cricket in front of my home crowd. I thrive off big crowds, and I’d like that opportunity.

‘If there are not people scoring the runs in Test cricket and they want to find a change, I’m well up for that. I’m a more mature batsman now. It’s been a change of mindset: batting long, not giving it away, getting greedy.’

The 32-year-old Patel is averaging 81 with the bat in Division Two of the county championship, and also averaged 67 during Nottinghamshire’s successful Royal London Cup campaign.

The question isn't will he do well against WI or even SA, it is will he do well in the Ashes in the winter?

If the selectors don't think that will be the case, then there is no point picking him, might as well blood a youngster in the 5 remaining tests of the summer.

Samit Patel still angry over England axe after starring in Nottinghamshire's T20 Blast win over Birmingham Bears

Samit Patel admits his England axing still rankles and insists he has the game to succeed in Test cricket.

After showing a flawless temperament with the bat to guide Nottinghamshire to a maiden Twenty20 title, the 32-year-old suggested he was ready to transfer his rich form across all formats and should he be handed an Ashes tour place this winter.

Patel won the last of his 60 international caps in the Test defeat to Pakistan in Sharjah 22 months ago, taking three wickets and scoring 42 in the first innings.

He went on the successful tour to South Africa later that winter but did not feature, and has had no contact since, with Liam Dawson preferred as a spinning all-rounder.

'Yeah it has hurt, I'm not going to lie. I'm an ambitious player. You shouldn't play for Notts if you don't want to play for England in my opinion. Putting on that England shirt, it means everything to me,' he said.

'I don't think I was doing anything wrong in Sharjah. I didn't play in South Africa and you can't do anything wrong if you don't play.

'Every time I put on an England shirt, I don't think that I've let them down. If I get the call, great, if I don't, I'll carry on and try next year.'

Asked whether he considered his best chance of a recall to be in T20 or one-day internationals, he said: 'Both, hopefully. Don't even count me out of Test cricket, to be honest.

'I think I know my game much better now. I know I'm ready if they ring me, that's for sure. I'm a different player.'

And if he had ever thought of asking for clarification as to why he wasn't being picked?

'I have thought about picking up the phone but there's only one winner there and it won't go down well if I do. If they've left me out they've left me out and the only way I can get back in is by putting in performances like today.

'I've always been thought of as bits and pieces but my strength is always batting.'

His statistics in 2017 back this up: fourth highest scorer in the country in both the Royal London Cup (539 runs at 67.37) and Division Two of the County Championship (824 at 68.66), he also contributed 405 to the Blast triumph.

'He just loves big games, big occasions and he stands up every time we need him to,' said the Outlaws captain Dan Christian. 'From that perspective I don't see why he wouldn't succeed in an England shirt, for sure.'

If he works on his fitness I think he should be recalled for Ashes. Has been very consistent and he wasn't awful with England which is a step up on a lot of players in the English county circuit who can't prove themselves at international. He's definitely better than Liam Dawson in tests and Dawson was picked for SA series

He needs to work on his atrocious fitness.

By far the best batsman in division 2 for me, deserves another shot; his batting IQ has improved immensely. Mo and Alistair Cook came through division 2 as well. Problem is there are only vacancies in the Test squad while he's more of a LOI specialist but think he could do a good job with the bat if given a long rope at no.5. Am sure the selectors will consider him moving forward but it is now or ever, big fella is in his early 30's

I could do a good job in Ashes, insists all-rounder Samit Patel

I could do a good job in Ashes, insists all-rounder Samit Patel as England ponder axing Ben Stokes from squad

Patel could win a late call up for England's Ashes squad if Stokes is withdrawn. He has not played for England since the tour of the United Arab Emirates in 2015. The all-rounder helped Notts win promotion and claim two limited-over trophies

Samit Patel believes he still has what it takes to succeed in international cricket. The 32-year-old has not played for England since winning his sixth Test cap against Pakistan on the winter tour of the United Arab Emirates in 2015.

Patel demonstrated his all-round talent during the 2017 season, playing an integral role in Notts winning a limited-overs double and promotion back to Specsavers County Championship Division One.

That has led to calls for him to be a late inclusion in England's squad for this winter's Ashes if Ben Stokes is withdrawn following his arrest on suspicion of causing actual bodily harm during disorder outside a Bristol nightclub.

And Patel is confident he would not let his country down if selected.
'I would like to think I could do a good job,' he told BBC Radio 5 Live.

'I would love to put an England shirt back on. If it comes this winter, great. If it doesn't, it doesn't. But I know for a fact that if I put my mind to it I can do a good job.

'I think the selectors will go with whoever they think will do the best job they can in Australia. Selectors are in the know and they know best.

'I have not really had any conversations with Trev (England coach Trevor Bayliss) or Jimmy (selector James Whitaker).'

"The way we were treated in Pakistan, I had no doubts whatsoever about my safety" : Samit Patel

Samit Patel might be the second oldest player in the Nottinghamshire team, but he feels he is getting better with age.

The England all-rounder enjoyed a brilliant 2017 as he won the Professional Cricketers’ Association Players’ Player of the Year and topped their statistical MVP rankings.

Notts have lost Chris Read and Michael Lumb from the side which excelled last season, with only Chris Nash, at 34, having more miles on the clock than Patel.

Patel might be 33, but he says he is improving with both bat and ball. In the case of the latter, he says a spell working with Saeed Ajmal during the Pakistan Super League recently was especially beneficial.

“I feel I’m going the opposite way with age. I don’t feel my game is in decline at all. I feel like it’s getting better,” he said.

“As a batsman I know my game more. The same as a bowler.

“My game is still coming on nicely. I bowled against some of the best in the world in the PSL and working with Saeed Ajmal has done my game the world of good.

“I just like cricket to be honest. I can’t see that changing anytime soon.

“I still love hitting the bowlers, perhaps more than running up to bowl, but it’s all great. I can’t wait for another season.”

Notts start their season at Lancashire on April 13 as they return to Division One of the County Championship after a one year absence.

The squad has a fresh look to it with Paul Coughlin, Ross Taylor and Nash coming in, while young players such as Tom Moores look set to have a big part to play.

As such, Patel feels there is an emphasis on senior players stepping up to an even greater extent than last season, when Notts won promotion as well as both white-ball trophies.

“It’s a young team! I think I’m the oldest in the dressing room, if not one of the oldest,” he said.

“I’m excited though. Some of the boys will have to step it up even more from last season.

“The likes of myself, Mull (Steven Mullaney), Riki (Wessels), Harry (Gurney) need to and then we’ve got Ross (Taylor) coming in. It’s an exciting time.”

Patel extended his run of form into the Pakistan Super League as he enjoyed a tremendous tournament with champions, Islamabad United.

He feels he can carry that T20 form into the four-day game, even though he admits both his and the Notts’ preparations have been hampered by the unseasonal weather.

“Why not carry that PSL form over? It will be great to face the red ball again,” he said.

“I’m looking forward to getting to back to the fundamentals of leaving the ball and playing a solid game.

“The weather has impacted on us, but that’s the same for everyone. The more mentally prepared we are the better.

His 3 wicket over...

Awkwardly he's been playing in the PSL and BBL this winter but wasn't selected in the draft for the hundred.

Samit Patel's message :

"It was such a shame to finish such a good tournament the way its happened, but players' health and safety come first; The Qalandars were first time in the qualifying stage and its a tough one (for us) but the right call by the PCB"

"Message to everyone is to stay safe as cricket will always come back, so we can always look forward to that so hopefully, the remaining games can be played; There is PSL next year and hopefully I will be a Qalandar next year too"

Legendary all-rounder Samit Patel has announced the end of his 22-year professional association with Nottinghamshire.

Patel, who began his journey with the Green and Golds as a 14-year-old before a senior debut two years later, will conclude his time at Trent Bridge with over 700 wickets and nearly 21,000 runs across 629 games for the club in all formats.

During that time, he also picked up 60 England caps across all three formats of the international game.

“It has been a privilege and an honour to represent Nottinghamshire, a place that I have called home for nearly three decades,” Patel said.

“The club has played a huge role in developing the young nine-year-old I was when I joined the club into the cricketer I am today.

“I look back on my career at Trent Bridge with tremendous affection; some of my fondest memories have come whilst donning the green and gold in front of the best fans in the world, engaging in battles on the field and winning trophies for the club.

“When I signed my first contract at 15, I dreamt of representing my country in all three formats. I have no doubt that the club’s unwavering support helped me to achieve these goals and, for that, I will be eternally grateful.

“Nothing would have given me greater pleasure than to see out my career with Notts, but whilst I haven’t been offered a new contract at Trent Bridge, I feel determined that I still have a lot to offer the game with both bat and ball. I'm looking forward to beginning my next chapter, contributing on and off the field wherever those opportunities may arise.

“Finally, thank you to all the members, supporters, staff and teammates who have walked through the gates at Trent Bridge. If it was not for you guys, I would not be the man I am today.”

Patel has secured six trophies with Nottinghamshire, twice winning the County Championship (2005/2010), T20 Blast (2017/2020), and the domestic List A trophy (2013/2017).

2017 was a golden year personally for Patel, too, as he blasted a run-a-ball 122 against in a successful chase of 371 against Essex in the Royal London One-Day Cup semi-final and 64 in the T20 Blast final to see the Outlaws defeat Warwickshire.

In the same season, he became the first Notts batter to make consecutive double centuries in the County Championship with scores of 257 and 247 against Gloucestershire and Leicestershire respectively.

Resultantly, he lifted a trio of prestigious awards as Nottinghamshire Player of the Year, the Professional Cricket Association’s Most Valuable Player and the PCA Player of the Year - the first Notts-based recipient of the latter award since Sir Richard Hadlee in 1987.

“Samit richly deserves the adulation he will get as his time at Notts comes to a close,” Director of Cricket, Mick Newell, said.

“That we associate him so closely with the club shows how important he has been in the successes we have achieved over the last two decades, and what a favourite he has become with our members and supporters.

“To have his kind of longevity at one club is no mean feat, and speaks volumes of his passion for the county, and the regard in which he has been held by his coaches and peers across his career here.

“I am grateful for his service to the club and the sacrifices he has made to wear the Nottinghamshire shirt. I know he has done so with immense pride, and that has played out in his performances on the pitch.

“He always wanted to be the man to get Notts over the line, and credit has to go to him for that attitude which has served him and us so well over many years.

“He leaves us with our very best wishes for his next chapter, and the knowledge that he'll always be warmly received as a visitor to Trent Bridge.”

In June 2021 - the year he was named the PCA’s Vitality Blast Player of the Year for his performances in the limited-overs competition - Patel also became the fifth man, and first English player, to do the T20 double of taking 250 wickets and scoring 5,000 runs.

In 2022, he played a leading part in Trent Rockets’ men winning The Hundred in the competition’s second year, finishing as the team’s top wicket-taker with 13.
