SHOAIB MALIK: As I mentioned in my previous interviews, whenever I gave interviews, that I'm going to retire from World Cup. Today was our last game, and I'm retiring from ODI cricket. I had planned this for a few years ago to retire on the last Pakistan World Cup match. I'm sad that I'll be leaving format of cricket that I once loved but happy that I'll have more time to spend with my family. This will also allow me to focus on Twenty20 cricket.

I would like to thank some of the most important people whose support and backing helped me through these 20 years of international cricket. Starting with the players I shared dressing rooms with, all the coaches I have under, my friends and family, the media, my sponsors, the Pakistan cricket board, and Pakistan sports board. But most importantly, my fans. I love you all. Thank you.

So now I can take questions.

Q. Shoaib, you started your career way back in October 1999, and it's almost going to be 20 years. You missed two World Cups, the previous one in 2015 and 2011. How disappointing was this World Cup for you because you're playing your last World Cup and you just managed to score eight runs out of three innings and got one wicket? How disappointing for you?
SHOAIB MALIK: I think, if you go through the whole thing, sometimes you come out with a performance, sometimes you don't. But, of course, it's a big platform and expectations were high, but you don't perform that spot of life. I think life never stops, and I'm pretty satisfied with my ODI career.

Will hafeez announce? Or he is thinking he will be given captaincy

Thank Shoaib for your service but it was your time to go please be kind to retire from
International t20 as well

LOL, should have been given jooton ka haar instead of guard of honour.

A most pathetic and mediocre cricket career comes to an end. Good riddance.

Thank you Shoaib!

You’ve had a decent ODI career.

Make sure you win us the WT20 next year :)

erm what , he is still going to take up some young guys place in T20s? this guy is 40+. Just look at him moving in the field.

Thanks for your service.

Should not go to the World T20 as he is well past his best.

Should never have been picked for this tournament This should be the end of him in t20s too

All the best for the future

Thanks for your many years of service to Pakistan cricket and all the best for the future "Don" Malik. :pkflag

Will announce retirement from t20s after the t20 worldcup.
Good manners would demand that one thanks him and wishes him the best but it is their own habit of sticking to the team like a leech even if its hurting the team and for this reason alone it becomes hard to even deliver the formalities.
Hafeez will also lurk around hoping for captaincy (which he will also get probably) and hurt the team further and perhaps Sarfaraz too.

Still holding onto that T20 slot.
It will be a travesty if he gets picked for T20. I mean common. There is no experience required in T20. It's a young man's game. What will be his contribution ?

Phopoo politician still wants to play T20s????? Where is PCB? Why are players deciding if they will play a format or not?

Ayy my man is still in T20. Malik just pulled a big prank on Pakistan lol.

He retired a bit too late. There wasn't anything left in the tank which cost Pak a bit.

Planned or not Malik knew there isnt anything left in the tank. He is done.

Should have gone around 2011 along with Hafeez. Only in PK can such terrible players have 20 year careers.

Ayy my man is still in T20. Malik just pulled a big prank on Pakistan lol.

Now that we have no choice but to stick with him for another year, let’s hope he becomes a better player, he needs to end his career on a high. Don’t want him to taint his legacy more.

Farewall Malik! Thank you for your services to Pakistan in ODIs.

He defo was emotional there. Who wouldn't be?

Good bye Malik.
You were not my favourite player but you've served pak cricket for 20 years. So you deserve respect.

Great , known for being amazing bat against India ended his last match against us on a duck!

Best of luck for future anyway.

Thank you for your service.

Good time your retiring, looking crap in ODIs in recent times. Won plenty of ODIs for us

Malik was one of my most favourite batsmen during the golden phase that he had under the guidance of Bob Woolmer, who promoted him up to the third slot and kind of unchained and unleashed the very capable batsman from within him. He was one of my favourites till 2009 or so I´d say, but from then on everything went in the wrong direction. Chances after chances kept translating into failures after failures. It´ll forever stay a riddle to me how he kept on getting so many chances the recent seven-eight years despite proving again and again that he was good for nothing now. A very lucky player I´d say. I don´t think I´ve disliked a Pakistan player as much as him the recent years. My "feelings" towards him took a total U-turn, but I think it wasn´t fair on him. He´s a player who has ambitions and dreams to keep on playing, and he had every right to think that way. The fault lies on the shoulders of those in the authorities who kept picking him. They, it seemed, deliberately chose to live in a fool´s paradise. They kept hoping for "experience" to finally start mattering, and it never did, sadly.

Still though, all the best to him for his days in the future. If I´d to pick one batting display from his career, it would be an 80 odd off around 40 balls against South Africa in an ODI in 2003. Some brilliant hitting, especially down the ground from what I remember. Back then, they used to show matches on ARY Digital over here in the UK and Europe, and then highlights too after the evening news bulletin. I recorded the highlights on my VCR and would often watch his innings in my teenage years. I could´ve picked quite a few innings from that era, till 2009 or so, but I pick this one for the my own life´s early teenage´s memories attached to it. Other than that, pick any innings of his against India from his years at peak.

Again, as a former fan of Malik, I was and I´m disappointed with him, but again, the fault lies less with him than the people from the PCB mentioned above.

Oh God, it means he will give us another heart break in T20 WC

just retire already

How does he know Sarfraz will lose captaincy? this guy is sick really !

Lol what? Is he saying Sarfi wont be the captain?
This guy is such a politician!

Lol what? Is he saying Sarfi wont be the captain?
This guy is such a politician!

because he is the biggest **** of the team, he should've been banned back in 2006 when he forfeited a T20 game in protest but alas, it wasnt to be. Always playing dirty politics to undermine the captain, he was the main culprit when 10 players joined and took oath on Quran against Younus Khan which eventually lead to Younus resigning from captaincy.

He couldnt do much against Misbah & Afridi but he was back with his dirty politics against Sarfraz. A-level **** this guy

Thought he retired months ago. Certainly seemed the case in this tournament

Clearly he is emotional

He is a human being after all, he represented his country for 20 years.

Good luck for the future

The saddest day in cricket history.

I hope all world governments acquiesce to the ICC’s request for an International holiday in his honour. Diaz-Canel has agreed but still no word from Kim jong-un.

These numbers will never be surpassed.

At least thank the PCB for letting you have this one last vacation.

Mentally checked out long ago. That is why he skipped England ODI series so he didn't get exposed earlier.

A press conference for 8 runs in 3 innings?

Didn’t legends of the past return home incognito?

Tsk tsk tsk coca cola should be faaaaaar away from any professional athlete

Hafeez should have retired too and why has Malik not retired from t20s as well? Is he planning to ruin another wc for us? cmon dude

Thank God! the worse player ever to represent Pakistan. He kept getting
selected without any performance. He should be no where near the T20
team, time to look for youngsters.

Come on guys don’t be so insensitive. Someone who has served your country for many years is retiring. He wasn’t very good towards the end of his career. But that’s the case with most players. He was really trying hard to hide his emotions there.
If he reads this thread how would he feel? So just say thank you and move on.

He shouldve tbh hung his boots well before the wc and given someone more capable a chance

Its selfish dragging the team down for your own personal goals

I completely understand that and agree with you. Whatever criticism he got before making this announcement was deserved and that’s what probably forced him to make this decision although he’s saying it was decided years ago. I’m just talking about the present moment. The guy has announced his retirement. What’s the point in insulting him now. He wasn’t that bad a player tbh. I have seen worse.

Typical Pak players...
"jutian khaa ke janday ney"
..
Please drop him from T20s as well...
and Hafeez, tu bhi dafa ho!

He won't be missed. A very average player who somehow managed to play for such a long time.

We said thank you 20 years ago.

The PCB served Malik well. I’m not sure why you think that should be celebrated?

I hope he does read this and feel ashamed of what he has been doing on and more importantly off the field.

I hated Malik as a player, but the guy had grace

See, Malik did not force anyone to include him in the WC, he had the backing of the coach and the selectors simple as that, which was a bad decision.

BUt had Malik not been included, he would had not made a fuss

Now look at Younis Khan. The guy was ready to use his media card if he was not going to be selected for the World Cup Squad.

THis is why i respect Malik more than Younis.

But as a player, Malik was as terrible as YOunis in the ODI format.

I hated him this entire tournament and since him comeback, but he has been a gentleman compared to some of the vultures on TV.
I really wish he had wiser counsel and had opted not to be on this tour, but this is just not the Pakistani way. No one wants their career to end like this, but I am equally disappointed that he thinks he has a role to play in Pakistan’s t20 game.

This guy is a politician. Dont take anything he says at face value. Take it as a grain of salt.

Not his fault for getting selected. But he couldve voiced his opinion. He couldve said im out of form.

Just shows that no one want to win as a team. They just wanna win as an induvidual.

I hope people keep this guy far away from politics and cricket.

Good riddance. He never really was a player of international quality. 20 years of mediocrity.

Good luck in your future endeavours. Please never come back to the Pakistan team in any format.

Thank you for staying true to your word and your services to the nation. Can’t say you were the best we had but you got to play longer than you would’ve for any other team. Hafeez should man up and follow suit but I feel he’s going to leech around and milk a few more years (god forbid).

Thank God! We must not pick him for T20s either and time for Hafeez to go as well.

Thanks for the memories, Shoaib Malik. You were awesome on flat pitches but you were horrible in English conditions. I wish you all the best.

Heard a rumour that Hafeez might announce a conditional retirement from test and ODI cricket on away tours to Australia and South Africa only and on seaming wickets at home where he is willing to give his place to a youngster.. but will be available for all other games.

Good Riddance.

The only notable performances I can remember off the top off my head from his career are -

Decent bowling performance vs Sri Lanka in an ODI in 1999 where we tied the match after Lanka had the game won... Bowled an over for 1 run if I remember correctly.

82 off 41 in 2003 Vs South Africa in an ODI series in Pakistan... Got us to total of 273 odd.

Partnership with Misbah/Younis at the 2007 World T20 versus Australia and Sri Lanka

60 runs off 50 odd balls vs West Indies in the 1st ODI in UAE 2008

Double Century in Test Cricket vs England in UAE.

Century while opening vs India Asia Cup 2008, 125 runs he got I believe.

115 opening the batting sometime in 2002/2003 around there in a Sharjah Cup?

60 odd vs India in 2005 while chasing 319? It was either 60 odd or 40 odd but it was a good innings.

100 odd runs at number 3 versus Zimbabwe which got us to 373 runs at Lahore in 2015.

50 vs Afghanistan at the 2018 Asia Cup that helped us avoid embarrassment.

90 odd vs Zimbabwe in 2015 again I think in Zimbabwe where we lost by 5 or so runs.

128 against India at the 2009 Champions Trophy which helped us win against our arch rivals, great partnership between Shoaib and Mohammad Yousuf... We were 60/3 at one stage...and these two did well to get us to 302.

50 odd vs India in the First T20 Vs India in India in 2012... Clutch innings that won us the match, I believe Malik and Hafeez were the only ones who scored but Malik took us over the line.

77 against England in 2016 5th ODI, had a great partnership with Sarfaraz that helped us avoid a whitewash and helped us achieve our first 300+ run chase away from Asia.

That's pretty much all I can remember from his sorry career.

Thank you for your services, a true team player and patriot for Pakistan.

Can still help us win Word t20 next year. Hopefully as captain.

No. Don't retire Mallik. Sad day for Pakistan cricket :(
He should now be handed over the T20 captaincy and made to retire gracefully by PCB

His peak was 2005-2009. Thank you for those great performances against India in those 4 series from 2004-07 and that six to jadeja in 2012.
On both sides of that spectrum, apart from 2015-16 and 2003-04 he was pretty mediocre.

Thanks for all the matches you have won for Pakistan.

Strong words about the future of Pakistan's ODI cricket. Give the young players plenty of time and encouragement, and I have no doubt that Pakistan will win the next World Cup.

Malik just use the media more cleverly, his pr made you think he is a much bigger player than what he really is.

I believe he got a big hundred to either save or win a test match in sri lanka.

One should retire honourably on a high and should not delay his retirement. Unfortunately Shoaib Malik clung on to his team (helped undoubtedly by some influential connections) for too long.

No point in hating or saying bad things about a player who is retiring now. He has given some good moments to Pakistani fans.

I loved his performances against India in particular. Always seemed to score against them.
