VIDEO: Watch Umar Akmal’s MMA training regime

In a video, making rounds on social media, Pakistani batsman Umar Akmal is seen “practising” Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) to gain fitness.

Akmal is out of the national cricket team mainly due to lack of fitness and his attitude.

In the video, the right-handed batsman is practising under ‘a foreigner trainer’ in a local gym as he is punching and kicking the pads.

The technique and style of his practice are rather immature as he has no proper stance and kicking or punching style.

Commenting on the training regime, fitness and boxing coach Usman Zulfiqar wrote: “That trainer kid is an old Sukh Chayn trainer’s son if I’m not mistaken. If you’ve got the means to pay for personal training, look into a professionals credentials and don’t let the fact that he/she is a foreigner, let you sign up. This is a disgrace to all martial arts and the fitness profession.”

I doubt he works out properly in the first place. I'm pretty certain he goes there just so he can upload a video on social media to show people how "dedicated" he is.

I think Mickey is pretty pleased he got rid of such bekaar players..can you imagine him in the Zimbabwe series..I just cant see him scoring well against such a B side let alone a top side..

He has reached a point in his life and career where no matter what he does, he is going to be mocked and criticized, and people are going to derive pleasure from having a go at him.

Is it only me or others feeling like its a dance move? Specially the kicking (?) part.

Lmao, it's funny no matter what he does but I do feel sorry for him, no one in their right minds could've predicted back in 2009 that he would fall off the charts this much...

Damn, it's been nearly 10 years, hard to believe how fast time flies... as well as your career.

The kicks alone are hideous to musicals on Broadway let alone Martial Arts. He's so off-balance he raises both arms when he kicks

So cringy

Sad it's reached the point people want him to fail just so they can make fun of him.

He looks slimmer so maybe he is making progress.

The martial arts training looks funny, but tbh those sort of things are good for losing weight. It's a bit like dance routines. Umar isn't training to become a professional MMA fighter so form doesn't matter. What's more for some, this sort of thing makes exercise more desirable hence you're more likely to do it. This also isn't the only exercise he's doing either people forget.

As I said many times before, Umar's probably just better off withdrawing from social media for a while. Stop letting the media get to him, stop giving the media stuff to use to get under his skin/embarrass him for. Just focus on getting fit and getting back domestic form.

His problems weren't just fitness alone. His batting had really disintegrated to tailender level batting and he became a cross batted slogger with zero defensive technique, could not play spin to save his life.

He needs to go back to the nets, drawing board and sort his technical issues out and then will need to score mountains of fast paced runs in domestic cricket.

I just get the feeling he'll make a soaring comeback to the team, along with Ahmed Shehzad. And no, I'm not impressed with the makhee marna style MMA training.

Will he ever comeback? Was always a good fielder despite all the fitness claims. In my opinion, the thing he should most be worried about is his discipline on and off the field. A very talented guy who could've taken over as captain after Misbah but he never showed that spark a skipper should possess.

I think he needs help with his wellbeing and mental health first.

Seriously he should seek advice.

Anything wrong with his mental health in case you know something we don't?

If this happens, it needs to be soon, so we can get a good 5-6 years but of them both.

Ripe for a tv show like

Keeping up with kashdashians
Growing up gotti
All day with the Akmals

Does need some medical help for his mind though and hopefully will get it, doesn’t help him that he has to see Abdul Qadir again and again, he in my opinion made him a lot lot worse

It's tragic really, he was so talented but clearly isn't well. Hope he gets better soon.

Umar Akmal training in advance, in case he becomes a victim of sledging by the opposition upon his return to international cricket.

I'm not trying to be mean but he might as well have joined in with these kids...:yk

Am a huge fight fan and love the art more then majority of the snobs abusing Akmal like insecure fools, firstly he is not training to compete in the UFC and secondly; it's just cardio to lose weight, whatever encourages people to move about so be it. Not his fan at all and Umar does need some mental help but many of you are ignorant and cynical.

I find it sickening some of the posts making fun of him. Sure if he was healthy and fine, then it would be funny to some extent but he is only trying to get fit and healthy. In the UK his health would have been identified by the cricket board and he would be given all the help he needs. Pakistan board has failed him and its sad to see man Pakistan cricket fans also following suit.

I agree with the fact I don't like people making fun of him like this to this extent seems a bit cruel.

However in UK the cricket board would have done nothing. It's not their job to keep a player fit, it's the player's job. And I'm sure Umar Akmal had basic nutrition plans laid out, it's not hard you can even work it out yourself, it's quite obvious what's healthy and not. In the UK especially many people struggle with obesity. And it's clear Umar Akmal has the tools to fix it, he's working in a rather nice gym. Not that you even need a gym to keep fit anyway.

I think in UK too sadly he would have been mocked in the media. British Media acts a lot like other media, negative news tends to bring in more readers.

The only differences is that I think mental health might be less stigmatised so if Umar had mental health problems he'd be less discouraged to go and seek help. And England generally doesn't play unfit/fat players. Doesn't matter if they're good or not, in general they don't want them representing them. Similar to the media attention and criticism Samit Patel faced, and even then the cricket board didn't want to give him many chances until he lost weight. Pakistan are more ready to play cricketers that are fat unfit and to enter the team fat and unfit like Sharjeel etc. Though that's changing these days now.

I dont know all the details but I know Jonathon Trott was helped by the ECB and Warwickshire. I also think Monty and Marcu Trescothick were also given support by the PCA and other organisations. Having a nice gym is of little help if you dont have professionals helping you, giving you the medication and moral support you need.

No amount of professional help would've worked for Akmal since he does not have an ounce of dedication.

At this moment in time, there's hardly any room for any of them to make it into the XI. The only thing I can think of is whenever Hafeez and Malik hang their boots (Malik most likely post WC), then Akmal and Shehzad could fight for places in the XI (assuming they both go off playing domestics).

Or perhaps he took Mickey Arthur's profanity way too seriously

Scary times ahead with this kind of training. Fans and bowlers should be worried.

Worst technique I have seen in a while. Arms swinging during kicks, no back pivot on the right hand. Atrocious.

Like many have stated before, he needs mental help first. That should be priority number one but since mental health is taboo in our culture I doubt he will ever get any.

I hope he can straighten everything out and come back and become a good player for Pakistan but as this point it seems almost impossible.

Well said mate, but the response from some folk here are a reflection of a wider problem in Pakistan so while it's not justified we can see where that ignorance stems from. True, it would have been better for his board to support him in this moment and provided the adequate help. People are still behaving like imbeciles though when the guy isn't even in the team anymore.

What kind of help shud PCB provide him, last time when he was called to NCA to work on his fitness and other aspects, he came out saying all that SHARAMFUL stuff about Mickey and other coaches.

The same help which is provided to those who struggle with mental or physical health issues by cricket boards around the world among other associations. It is no use being uptight and taking the morale high ground by demonizing those with illnesses when nothing of substance is done to help.

You r correct
AGREED

I am not sure even LQ is gonna retain him for PSL. Needs to perform in domestics first

UA needs to take control of his professional life, its not just talent that Kohli and co have, its the desperation to succeed.

There's a saying that goes "work hard in silence, let success make the noise".

I think Umar Akmal should learn from this. He knows fans/media are all over his social media, I think he doesn't need to post all of this working out business on his twitter.

As for his actual technique, I don't really care because at the end of the day, he is a professional cricketer, not a fighter so he doesn't need to be great, as long as he is getting the exercise so I'm not going to jump on the bandwagon and mock him for that. Fair play to him for working out, but I think he should stay quiet on social media and keep to himself, he can get fit in his own time and can then focus on getting runs when the domestic season starts.

Come on guys, give him a break.

Never say never. If he gets through the fitness tests and shows form at domestic level then why can't he get back into the team?

Pakistan are doing good and I hope they continue to do well but then again don't read too much into a series win over Zimbabwe's depleted side and a couple of T20 wins over a struggling and depleted Australia.

Pakistan's bowling is once again very strong, I dare say the best in the world right now. But batting I'm still not fully convinced.

Dear God, some users need to grow a pair and realise if you post something like that you'll get rightfully laughed at. There's nothing in that video that screams professional. Get a grip, for goodness sake.
