"Its time to bring the World Cup home - we should have done that in 1992 but we were robbed"

How were they robbed?

How were they robed in 1992? They reached the final and I thought were comprehensively beaten in the final. There were no controversial decisions in that match...

To be honest, he does have a point although his reasons might be different.

England had shot Pakistan for 74 in the group game before we were gifted a point because the match was abandoned due to rain. It was inarguably the most embarrassing point any team has ever earned in a World Cup.

That one point came back to haunt England who lost to us in the final. If Pakistan would have been eliminated, it is quite possible that England would have gone on to win the World Cup.

We can criticise Botham all we want, but if the exact same thing happens to Pakistan, we would be lamenting our bad luck and calling the other team extremely lucky.

Also, it is pertinent to shed some light on the South African match as well. People justify Pakistan getting a point out of the England game by stating that they were robbed against South Africa because of rain.

However, chasing 212 after you were 74/2 is not comparable to getting away with a target of 75 with the opposition 20/1. It wasn't just robbery - it was daylight robbery with their hands tied behind their backs.

Well it looks like a flat pitch i assume..

These last 2 games icc have given them favourable pitches..

Whatever happens still enjoyed the world cup.

If this is the case that Pakistan got lucky with the rain than according to this sense, not only england but all the participating teams were robbed of the world cup.

By that logic, I think Newzealand were much more unlucky than England as the faced us in the semi final. Had they not faced us in Semifinals, maybe they could have won against any other team and also perhaps could also have beaten England in final.

I agree. New Zealand were the pre-tournament favorites as well, but England had made the final anyway and to see them lose to a team that should have been eliminated in the group stage was a hard kick in the gut.

Yes never in your wildest dreams you would have imagined Imran Khan coming in at 3 and stealing the Trophy.

It was honestly speaking embarrassing for England. Instead of feeling embarrassed, they are pretending to show that they were robbed. Whinning at its worst..

If India vs NZ and Pak vs Sri Lanka did not rain off then we would have most likely be in semi final in this world cup. In 1992 England could have been beaten by NZ as well, so Botham is talking rubbish as usual.

False analogy. Pakistan and Sri Lanka didn't happen at all, while England were 20/1 chasing 75 when rain robbed them of a surefire victory. Even a club team wouldn't have lost from that position.

While Pakistan would have been favourites against Sri Lanka, there is no guarantee that we would have won. We are a circus team and if we could almost lose to Afghanistan, we could have lost to Sri Lanka as well. However, since that game didn't happen and people forcefully want to make Pakistan look like a victim in this World Cup, they will insist that had Pakistan played Sri Lanka, we would have smashed the living daylights out of them.

So a particular poster has started to question our only Wc win.I see groundwork being laid to question our every win and trying to present it as fluke. We are being considered unworthy and only Eng and India deserve everything. Why hold these WC and tournaments.Just give trophy to India as we are mediocre.

Stop posting rubbish. No circus team can beat NZ and England and push Australia.

New Zealand would have destroyed that England side. Even with all that momentum, we were struggling at one point. There is a reason that Inzi knock is always counted as one of the greatest innings in WC history.

This post doesnt make sense at all.

Who exactly robbed England? God? by sending the rain.

Going by this logic Pakistan have been robbed in this world cup too because their game against srilanka got washed out which they would have won given the fact that SL have been Pakistan's whipping boys in recent times.

Stop posting rubbish. No circus team can beat NZ and England and push Australia.

Only a circus team can achieve a 13 match losing streak coming into the World Cup and get dismissed for 100 in the opening game, after getting the best possible preparation among all teams.

Yes God robbed England.

We cannot compare the washout between Pakistan and Sri Lanka to the match between England and Pakistan in 1992. We could only compare it if let's say Pakistan were chasing 200 and the second innings didn't happen at all because of rain.

Ok they got robbed in the group game
So why didn't they beat pakistan in the final?

England themselves got more lucky than Pakistan. When South Africa needed 20 odd to win after rain break for 1 delivery. But sure lets not talk about that. Because 1 point gained from washouts equals to getting robbed while getting the win in a knockout because of an absurd rule isn't stealing and South Africa weren't robbed of a world cup at all.

1992 was a fluke there is no doubt about it now. We have been poor this World cup as well which is very similar with 1992 in terms of results.

The most pathetic thing about 1992 is that we lost to a miserable Indian side. Imran will always be remembered as the captain who lost to the weakest Indian side in a World cup game.

Absolutely Ifs and Buts....
If we did not give Tendulkar 4 chances we would have been in 2011 final, if Sharma did not keep getting lives in most games India may have been beaten in some of those games and not make it to final etc etc. Truth is in a long competition you get many good fortunes before you can win the cup.

You will not hear Botham or Mamoon mentioning that; as I said all teams get fair share of their good fortunes. Only Pak can fluke it - LOL !

Of course England should take the blame for losing to Pakistan in the final, but Pakistan had no business being in the final in the first place.

Think about it this way:

In the 2019 World Cup, Pakistan have New Zealand dismissed for 74. During the innings break, their is persistent rain and the match is abandoned. That 1 point ultimately saves New Zealand from getting eliminating in the group stage.

Pakistan qualify for the final where they meet New Zealand again, and this time New Zealand wins.

How do you think PPers would react, and what would be the mood on this forum? Would people focus more on how New Zealand played better in the final and deserved to win, or would people moan and groan over the fact that they were extraordinarily lucky to survive in the tournament after Pakistan had shot them for 74? If you want to be honest here, you already know the answer.

Yes England were fortunate against South Africa in the semi-final, but defending 22 in 13 balls is still far more possible than defending 74 in 50 overs.

England may not be the unluckiest team in the World Cup, but Pakistan were by far the luckiest side, and when you lose to the luckiest side in the final, you are bound to be bitter about it.

We haven't been great but when it mattered we performed decent. WI was an off day. Our batting is due a collapse occasionally. Heck even your beloved England collapse awfully every now and then.

It's been 11 WCs. Pakistan, Sri Lanka, West Indies and India have won it. Australia has done it 5 times. England who are the oldest playing nation have not won a single one yet. If they had Pakistan all out on 74 in 1992. They should be ashamed that they couldn't repeat that in the Final or to the very least win it.

What do you mean by "when it mattered"?

Did the West Indies game not matter? Of course it did, and that shambolic performance is the reason why we will be going home after the Bangladesh match.

It seems for England that match against Pakistan was the Final and hence they were robbed of World Cup glory, aah what rubbish. If England were so good then they should have won the final. By the way New Zealand was the best team in 1992 world cup and could have easily beaten england in the final. Actually New Zealand should feel robbed for not reaching final and defeating England.

Nothing compares to getting a free point after being dismissed for 74.

What's to say England wouldn't have collapsed on a damp wicket under cloudy conditions?

They were struggling for runs chasing, and we all know how the England batting loves a collapse as much as a Pakistani one.

England got more than one in 1992 when SA match rained and target was revised to impossible.

Again, nothing compares to the luck Pakistan had in the group game against England. Even if we look at each of the 4,000+ ODI matches that have been played in history, I highly doubt that you get hold of any example that would top the stroke of bizarre fortune that Pakistan enjoyed against England.

Absolutely no chance of collapsing to a defeat when you are 20/1 chasing 75. It was the luckiest point any team has ever earned in a World Cup game. Nothing compares.

Pakistan won 1992 fair and square over England. We (NZ)have more to complain about (Crowe's injury) than do England as do South Africa (stupid rain rule)

In my calculation 3 / 2 lucky points (cannot remember how many point for wins) England got are more than 1 point Pak got. So who is luckier ?

YOUR ALL ARGUING ABOUT THE WRONG ISSUE!
Botham's refering to being given out caught behind by moin off wasim.
He claims he didn't touch the ball!
Theres a couple more decisions he disputes as well!

Beefy has lost his marbles again.
England were 'over the moon' to play Pakistan in the final, as they felt they could easily beat us.
New Zealand would have been a tougher prospect for them at the time.
Arrogance and Sour-Grapes are stigmas England will never get rid of.

Morgan will be remembered as losing to weakest Sri Lanka team - so what is your point?

I don't care how the English fans remember him. Imran was the first to lose against arch rivals and that was the weakest Indian side ever. All the Indian sides that have beaten us over the years have gotten better and better every tournament. All our captains get the abuse for losing against India but some how Imran doesn't get criticized for losing against the weakest Indian side ever. 1992 was the best chance to beat them and we failed miserably.

Yes God robbed England.

God robbed England? :))) Come on.

This is part of the game and you were the last person i expected to defend such a statement because generally you want teams to beat others on merit which England got the chance of doing in the finals.

Botham is a whinger......so if England were so good and had skittled Pakistan put for 74 why did Pakistan manage to make 249 in the final? Cricket like any other sport ks swings and roundabouts and it evens itself out. Obviously we havd one poster who will try and derail any thread tell us how bad Pakistan is....

Just like 1992. Miserable Pakistan team is waiting for other teams to help them qualify.

Just shows you how overrated and lucky 1992 team and Captain was. Credit goes to Sarfraz and his men for playing the same way 1992 team played and thus exposing the 1992 heroes as well.

Mamoon this is atrocious bit of logic

England couldn’t beat us in the final how are you so sure that they would have beaten a rampaging NZ who were clearly better than them

And how about SA getting robbed by rain against England in semis?

England weren’t robbed of anything. This is just whining at its best

Pakistan won final and that is that.
They won and so crowned World champion.
And trust me they deserve being champion.

Ok, so he was 'Robbed' and coming into this final he had scores of 22, 21, 8.
Wow!! he would have made a difference with the Bat.:46:

So he shouldn’t be upset over a wrong decision against him in the final just because he didn’t score big in the 3 matches prior to that? :))

Anyways, Pak won the 92’ WC. That’s what history will remember.

Look I am sorry if I sound irrational here, but that is the only way I can explain what happened on that day.

Yes rain is part of the game, but to have the match called off when you are 20/1 chasing 75 is utterly ridiculous. It is like getting killed by lightning.

Forget the past now. Try to win this time around.

from reading these threads Pakistan you would think every single Pakistan victory in history has come from luck or has been a fluke.

Of course I am not sure, but in spite of all that, England still made the final where they lost to a team that should have been eliminated in the group stage.

I agree they were lucky against South Africa in the semi-final, but defending 22 in 13 balls is still more likely than losing your way while chasing 75.

Imran and his players must have been ashamed while accepting that 1 point.

Rain and the format brought pakistan into contention in the 92 WC, that is no secret.

Still you are failing to reason how were England robbed?

England could have lost to any other team as much as Pakistan. They didn’t deserve to win the World Cup

Toss/weather/little umpiring hiccups are part and parcel of the game.

In sport you take the points no matter how they come, i can assure you imran and his players were not ashamed, relieved maybe. In tournaments the results and games even out themselves, if this was a one off you could maybe talk about a bit of luck, but these arguments are becoming a bit tedious. You could almost use a similar logic to claim Pakistan were UNLUCKY or got robbed in 1999, but they lost to Australia fair and square so no complaints.

We have a Botham apologist in this thread.

Someone alert Botham on twitter about this development, not only will he be delighted to see it he may even send this desperate soul a cheque.

They were robbed because they lost the final to a team that should have been eliminated the group stage thanks to England getting them out for 74.

As I replied to emranabbas, if something like this had happened to Pakistan in this World Cup, we would have reacted completely differently and called ourselves extremely unlucky.

We are already doing that by focusing on the Sri Lanka match that never happened, even though we are responsible for our own demise by losing pathetically to West Indies.

If I remember correctly, Botham was given out off Akram when he had not nicked the ball. At least Botham thought he had not nicked it. I dont remember the moment exactly, I will look up some old youtube video.

Also Javed Miandad was given not out when he was plumb lbw.

(These were English opinions, I am not sure if they were true)

Pakistan had the rub of the green going their way in 1992, there is no denying that.

Semis were a fluke from there on they delivered in two important matches and won fair and square.

Pakistan had no place being in the final lmao same could be said about newzeland in this World Cup smashed minnows and when it came to the big teams got battered. It’s funny now it’s all about deserving. Sorry mr Buffoon but in tournaments it’s about being lucky and somewhat consistent all the other factors which are not in your hand like rain and dls you can’t do much about that. If england were a way better side maybe they should have dismissed Pakistan again for 74 or did they just have an off day like India did in the champions trophy and against Australia in the home series. Your excuses to shame Pakistan cricket or Pakistan the country are pathetic and beyond idiotic. You take low blows at every instance you can get but you’re just as sour as botham but I don’t blame you since you’re both jealous of Imran khan and what he’s achieved in life while both of you are made a joke of by everyone.

As some one has pointed out Botham is probably not referring to the fact that Pakistan were perhaps fortunate to reach the final but more his gripe was that in his view he was incorrectly given out, the umpre Bucknor turned down plumb lbw against Miandad and that essentially he accuses Wasim Akram of ball tampering before his devastating two wicket blast which turned the game Pakistan's way.

As others have pointed out England were perhaps also lucky to get to that final, South Africa would have beaten had that stupid rule not changed the run required target.

Haha good Pakistan still gives him nightmares. Hope it continues for the rest of his life. Vile person.

How were they robed in 1992? They reached the final and I thought were comprehensively beaten in the final. There were no controversial decisions in that match...

The plumb lbw appeal by Pringle to Javed early on which was given not out. Botham’s own dismissal. Stuff that would be sorted out by the third ump today.

Pakistan had the rub of the green a bit, but still played well though and deserved to win. If Javed had got out early, who knows? The young Inzi would have had more time to bat and might have got a hundred. Botham might have survived the appeal against him, then been out the next ball instead.

Move on, Sir Ian.

Haha good Pakistan still gives him nightmares. Hope it continues for the rest of his life. Vile person.

Talk when you have raised tens of millions of pounds for sick children.

Everyone has their views on Beefy, as a English Pakistani fan most of our views are negative however you cannot fault him for his charity work later on in life.

Lets be honest here shall we, you are coming out with this tripe because of your views towards Imran Khan.

I suggest you cast you mind back to the tournament, it was England who were lucky. Remember 22 for 1 in the SF? It was South Africa who were robbed of a final spot.

Yes now you can make pancake wickets for your team so you consistently score 300 + every time. Probe ICC asap, most corrupt organization ever and Botham you could have defeated Pakistan but you didn't so chill.

No you are completely wrong they were not robbed at all.

I don’t believe in luck or flukes in winning tournaments. Pakistan completely deserved 92 wc they were better than England at every thing other than probably fielding
