Lahore, 9 June 2020:

Pakistan’s most successful Test batsman and former captain Younis Khan has been appointed as the men’s national team batting coach for the upcoming tour of England, the Pakistan Cricket Board announced today.

In addition to Younis, the PCB has also appointed wrist spinner and a veteran of 52 Tests Mushtaq Ahmed as the team’s spin bowling coach and mentor for the three-Test and three-T20Is series, which will be played in August-September. The pre-series and series details will be announced in due course.

The appointments have been made to provide head coach Misbah-ul-Haq and fast bowling coach Waqar Younis the necessary and essential resources that can help them further uplift the performance of the side.

Furthermore, and as part of the tour arrangement, additional players will be sent to England, which makes it even more important to have equally capable coaches to provide best training and preparation opportunities to the players.

Younis, 42, scored 10,099 runs at over 52 in 118 Tests from 2000 to 2017. This included a career-best 313 against Sri Lanka in Karachi in 2009, which lifted him to No.1 position in the ICC rankings.

Against England, Younis holds an equally impressive record.

In 16 innings of nine Tests in England, the champion batsman scored 810 runs at over 50 with two centuries (218 at The Oval in 2016 and 173 at Headingley in 2006) and three half-centuries. In two Tests in Pakistan and six in the United Arab Emirates, he scored a total of 616 runs at just under 50 with two centuries (127 and 118 in Dubai) and one half-century.

With 139 catches in Tests, Younis cemented himself as Pakistan’s best fielder and 13th overall in the history of the game.

Separately, Younis had a season with Yorkshire in the 2007 English County Championship in which he amassed 824 runs in 13 matches at an average of 48.47.

PCB Chief Executive Wasim Khan said: “I am delighted that someone of the stature and incredible batting record of Younis Khan has agreed to join the Pakistan cricket set-up as national men’s team batting coach. When I spoke with him, his commitment and enthusiasm to take up this assignment and serve his country was never in doubt and he jumped at the opportunity.

“Younis’ work ethics, commitment to match preparation, game awareness and tactics in the English conditions will be invaluable. He is a role model to a number of current players and is hugely respected. I have no doubt that the squad will benefit from the immense value that he will bring, both on and off the field.

“Mushtaq knows the English conditions as well as anyone, having spent a lot of time playing county cricket and working with the England cricket team. Apart from guiding the spinners and playing a mentor’s role, Mushtaq can be helpful to Misbah in match planning and preparations.

“It is crucial that the side understands the conditions that they will encounter in the upcoming series and so having the experience of the likes of Younis Khan and Mushtaq Ahmed to compliment head coach Misbah-ul-Haq and fast bowling coach Waqar Younis will be invaluable.

“These appointments are part of the PCB’s commitment to help and support Misbah and his team to achieve the objectives of producing strong performances that can help the national side to once again become a force to be reckoned with.”

Younis Khan said: “For me, there has never been a bigger honour and a better feeling than to represent my country and I feel privileged to have been again offered the opportunity to serve it for a challenging but exciting tour of England.

“The Pakistan side includes some immensely talented cricketers who have the potential to achieve greater heights. Together with Misbah-ul-Haq, Mushtaq Ahmed and Waqar Younis, we will try to make them better and prepare them as best as we can with on and off field coaching and guidance.

“I have never been shy of sharing my experiences and knowledge, and I think this particular tour provides me with an ideal opportunity where I can spend post-training time with the players to engage with them on batting techniques, bowler assessments, mental toughness exercises besides talking them through with scenario planning.

“We all know English conditions demand not only precise technique but patience and discipline, and if you can master these, then you will not only excel in England but anywhere in the world. With the quality we have in the team, I think we have a good chance to produce good results if we prepare properly, get our processes right and hit the ground running as soon as we land..”

Head coach and chief selector Misbah-ul-Haq said: “I welcome Younis Khan and look forward to reuniting with him in Pakistan colours as our cricket careers have almost run concurrently. We know each other better than most think as we have worked hand in glove in the past decade to contribute in some of Pakistan’s most historic and memorable Test wins.

“When I took over the captaincy during a difficult period in 2010, Younis proved to be a great ally and support, and I am confident he will provide similar assistance as we head to England with a clear objective of putting Pakistan cricket back on the road to success.

“With the reputation and record Younis brings with him not only as a disciplined and hardworking batsman but also as an athletic fielder and a strategist, I see this as a great opportunity for our young players to hone their skills and learn how to make the transition from a good to a great cricketer.

“It always requires more than just talent to stamp your mark on the world stage, something which Younis demonstrated throughout his career.

“Mushtaq Ahmed is loaded with the experience of helping elite cricketers from different countries and is widely regarded as a mentor. Mushtaq is always involved in the game and this attitude will further help us in our pre-series preparations and enhance our prospects in the series.

“Due to events beyond human control, the series in England will be one of the most challenging and difficult and, as such, we need to have the best talent and brains on our side. Younis as well as Mushtaq clearly tick all these and additional boxes, which will assist us in achieving our targets.

Mushtaq's a good appointment, Yasir might learn how to spin the ball again. Younis Khan sounds good on paper, just hope it doesn't end in tears.

Thank God Misbah's influence as a batsman will be punctuated with YK appointment.

Good decisions all around. Azhar needs to win the series if he wants to prove his credential because ENG test team right now is not that strong. Even WI gave them a tough time here.

Don’t like YK’s appointment but Mushi is a good pick.

I am sure YK can guide batsmen on their approach to a certain batting challenge, based on his vast experience m; but I am not sure if he is capable of identifying & fixing batsmen’s flaws - trouble shooting is a subject matter expert job.

For the batting coaches position, I would have liked to see a pro bating coach, preferably with international playing career as well.

A big slap to the face to those who kept lobbying all these years that a drama queen like Younis Khan should have no role in Pakistan Cricket

This will end in tears.

As always Younis’s ego will cause drama, this man should be kept as far away from the team as possible.

Excellent decision. Whatever you think about Misbah, it is only a good step to ease his load with a batting coach.

And who better than Younis Khan.

For the first time in so many years, the PCB is heading towards the right direction.

Well done Wasim and Misbah!

Can’t wait to see the boys on field.

Wish him best of luck!

Easily the best Test bat we’ve ever had this century.

I hope he can guide Babar and Imam on how to play a test knock.

The Younis Khan finally gets a job worthy of his stature in Pakistan cricket. He is a brand and a diva, he always deserved it.In future hopefully he will be mad efull time coach because it is beneath The Younis Khan to stay as batting coach for a long time.

Younis's history with PCB has not been particularly good which is why I am surprised this has happened but at the same time he was always a very good batsman who understood the game well and I can think of few people who would make better batting coaches than Younis.

And this itself is a good idea for future tours. I think India too were considering something similar not too long ago by appointing Dravid and Zaheer as batting/bowling consultants for a foreign tour but it didn't materialize.

Don't know what is left for Misbah to do. Wasim Khan's stupid decision of appointing Misbah head coach/chief selector has become a prestige issue and they are trying to do everything for Misbah. Can't believe this is the same Ehsan Mani/Wasim who devastated the national team by using Inzamam as counter pressure against Arthur/Sarfaraz, they could've stopped destruction of the team by removing Arthur-Sarfaraz in 2018 and bring their favorites. Create dunnecessary hurdles for the national team management and finally pushed Inzamam into the dressing room which finally finished Pakistan's prospects in the World Cup.

Removing the coach and captain half a year before the World Cup?

Please.

Great step by the PCB.

Misbah was given too much on his plate as head coach, chief selector and batting coach so this appointment makes sense albeit surprising given Younis's history of spats with the PCB.

Whilst I'd prefer someone more technical like Gary Palmer who did wonders with Shan Masood, Younis is highly respected in the dressing room.

Mushtaq's appointment is logical, don't know why PCB didn't do more to keep him in the first place. Yasir's form nosedived after Mushy left.

Why couldnt they rope in Mohammed Yusuf who actually had best technique i ever saw from a pakistani player

Well....

I don't know what to say honestly. I like the appointment of Mushy hopefully it lasts longer than the Eng series. Yasir and the other spinners will feel comfortable and will get essential help from Mushy, someone who has also worked with England.

Younis on the other hand seems to be a risky appointment knowing his antics but then pairing him up with the likes of Misbah & Waqar could work. Now his record is good in England and the players will be more so well knowledge with him and probably work well with him. Despite this I don't think he is the right fit for the batting coach role for this series. Maybe a former England bat would have been better or Kumar Sangakkara.

Just someone who is a well capable batsman, will be influential and more importantly won't cause a ruckus, drama and more importantly won't be a diva. Younis is likely to carry a ton of weight and will get stroppy if things don't go his way.

I will not be surprised if we get whitewashed by England under Misbah and Waqar.

I just want to watch some cricket. To be honest i am not concerned about the end result. Our cricketers will be very rusty i am sure. Just hope we put in a bit of fight and the test matches go beyond day 3.

I will not be surprised if we get whitewashed by England under Misbah and Waqar.

Looking at the recent records of the 2 teams, I wouldnt be surprised but that would happened irrespective of who the coaches are. The coaches make a minimal difference, PK only have 2 WC players in Babar and SSA, the rest are either living out their last days or are still developing. But PK have played better against then Ind have in England over the last few tours.

I think our days of being England’s bogey team are long gone. They have added steel to their batting lineup with Burns, Pope and Sibley, while Stokes has promoted himself from a world class player to an all-time great at the peak of his powers.

The rise of Archer has also added another dimension to an already impressive bowling attack.

Meanwhile, we continue to be a dreadful team. A whitewash is on the cards unless Babar has a monster series and ends up scoring a ton in each match.

Babar has to win at least one match on its own in England to have a valid comparison with Smith and Kohli.

Pakistan are going all Pakistan with their appointments. Not very happy with this, we have lacked professionalism as a nation when it comes to athletics for a very long time.

Lol

Every English player is a gangsta until a young buck Pakistani fast bowler runs through them with the ball seaming around. They have and will always remain our bogey team

I like this appointments... Misbah has good man-management skills and Im sure he will let them do their job instead of micro management.. Looking forward to see some bold decisions in terms of squad selection from Misbah,

I believe that Misbahs workload will be much easier now with these 3 big names taking care of coaching...

I thought Younis would be better suited to younger players. I hope he can do well.

I do worry that he never really overcame weakness against pace and swing and we are now making him a batting coach. We do know a batting coach but would have preferred someone with better qualifications.

I'll trust Younis with a batting coach role more than Misbah.

This is a good appointment by PCB, I hope it has a positive effect, our batting collapses in Australia were embarrassing. Can't just be Babar and sometimes Yasir Shah to score all the runs :)

Younis is actuallya good appointment. I wish him to be the head coach though instead of Batting coach. Misbah should be no where near the team. He may suit better as only the chief selector or regional selector.

Is technique is different so am not sure how hes going to improve other techniques as hes different

The musthtaq ahmed is a excellent decision he will try and revive the spinners in pakistan and espically yasir

I am in 2 mins regarding younis he is a run machine and gets runs in tough times and has excellent record in england.
But younis khan is one of a kind it's hard to coach that so how will he go about coaching technique also he has an ego but he has played with misbah so might not have much of effect.

Overall I would say it's good decision aslong as his ego doesnt come out also he is well respected man surprised but happy

Mushtaq Ahmed is a really good pick. Pakistan hasn't had a consistent spinner since Saeed Ajmal and hopefully Mushtaq can fix it.

Picking Younis Khan is a bit of a gamble. This man is very emotional.

I think Misbah will be able to control him, and he will have to. If Younis is allowed to run rampant with "izzat" then this appointment will end in tears.

Otherwise Younis has a lot of excellent qualities as a cricketer and if harnessed the right way can give a lot to our batsmen. He's also one of the few ex cricketers who has the ability to guide Babar to become even better. At a time where everyone from Hafeez to Aamir Sohail is hoping to hang onto Babar's coattails so they can take credit for his success, we need someone with actual ability to take the reins on that one.

I fink he younis should have full responsibility in batting coach iI misbah tries to split between him and younis that will end up in tears

History tells us the pessimists have been proven wrong over and over again when Pakistan tours England. At least I have been hearing how badly we will loose in England since I was a child and guess what I cant remember a single tour where we were poor in England (including the last decade where we have been below average overall).

I expect us to put a decent show again!

Tbh we’re playing at the one stadium we’ve always been poor at. We also won’t be able to practice against county teams.

If you ask me, I think we’re at even more of a disadvantage this time around. We also have more passengers than ever before with Azhar and Shafiq.

So a lot will depend on Shan, Babar, and Abid.

I’m hoping for Pakistan to go with a 3 man pace attack of Shaheen, Hasnain and Naseem at Old Trafford. Might as well go for it and pick the 3 who can actually bowl a mean short ball.

I see your point. But not having to travel all over england, city to city will mean our players will be fresh specially the fast bowlers. I would say if the batsmen can somehow put on 250 we have a decent chance

If there is one person who can maintain a sense of calmness and help Younis not go overboard strict with his methods, it's Misbah. Younis played for 7 years under him, and never did we hear of any infighting of younis within the team.
Ever since his retirement, it's been touted younis would be too volatile for the role or he is in the bad books of PCB, but it's a testament to those who have been able to convince him to take up the role and hopefully good results would start to show up within months.

Nothings going to happen. Younis Khan had issues with previous management mostly. This management is professional as you can see how Younis Khan said that Wasim Khan approached him professionally. Another reason why nothing will happen is that he is a professional person and has a brother to brother connection with Misbah. Inshallah everything will go smooth and he succeeds in his respected role as a batting coach.

Mushtaq and Younis appointments excite Test stars

• “Excellent opportunity to learn from Younis during a pressure series,” says Azhar Ali

• “There can’t be a better feeling to have the geniuses of Misbah and Younis on my side upon which I can strengthen and define my future career,” says Babar Azam

• “I have always had a student-mentor relationship with him. The fact that we will all be sharing a dressing room with him excites me, as there is so much experience to draw from,” Shan Masood

• “Mushtaq has been my mentor and with his guidance I hope to play a major part in team’s objective of securing first Test win in England since 1996,” says Yasir Shah

Lahore, 11 June 2020:

Pakistan stars are thrilled at the addition of Mushtaq Ahmed and Younis Khan in the backroom staff for the upcoming tour of England in which they will play three Tests and as many T20Is in August-September.

The presence of Mushtaq and Younis – the spin bowling and batting coaches for the tour – further strengthens the support staff, which also includes head coach Misbah-ul-Haq and fast bowling Waqar Younis, as the squad is likely include up to 25 players for both the formats.

Pakistan’s last two Test series in England – in 2016 and 2018 – ended in draws. For this much-anticipated series, which has crucial World Test Championship points attached to it, the Pakistan players are eager to make the most of the star-studded backroom staff.

Pakistan Test captain Azhar Ali, who accumulated 2,628 runs with Younis in 48 innings, said: “I have been fortunate to play a number of Tests with Younis. In my books, he is one of the best non-England batsmen to perform consistently and score heavily in English conditions in the past two decades.

“With a great technique, mental strength and match assessment, he not only dominated the opposition on the field but off the field as well. I think this offers an excellent opportunity for the emerging and younger batsmen to learn from Younis during a pressure series than they will ever learn during a training camp or an off-season.

“On a personal note, it gives me great confidence that in Misbah-ul-Haq, Mushtaq, Waqar Younis and Younis, there will be a collective experience of 332 Tests sitting in the backroom on which I can fall for guidance and support. I don’t recall we have ever gone into a series as well equipped as this one, which will surely brighten up our chances.”

Pakistan Test vice-captain Babar Azam, who averages a staggering 102.50 in last five Tests and knitted a 131-run partnership with Younis in Kingston in April 2017, said: “Younis Khan is a living legend and I admire him for the way he used to plan and construct his innings. I look up to his resilience, grit and determination. He has done wonders for Pakistan and we are privileged that he will be part of our dressing room again.

“As part of a young and learning group of batsmen, there can’t be a better feeling to have the geniuses of Misbah and Younis on my side upon which I can strengthen and define my future career.”

Opener Shan Masood, who struck his first Test century during a match-winning partnership with Younis in Pallekele in 2015 (Pakistan’s record chase), said: “I am very excited at the news of Younis being appointed as our batting coach and it is a great step to reap the services of one of Pakistan’s best.

“Personally, I have always had a student-mentor relationship with him, having played with him in domestic teams and, more importantly, in the Pakistan team. The fact that we will all be sharing a dressing room with him excites me, as there is so much experience to draw from.

“While as a player, Younis always loved helping his peers. Often, he spent more time on other players than he did on himself and seeing him in this role means we will have access to the knowledge of someone who has been so successful at the highest level.”

Wrist spinner Yasir Shah, fastest bowler to take 200 Test wickets in terms of innings, said: “Mushtaq has been one of my mentors. During his career as a spin bowling coach, he has helped a number of slow bowlers to become more effective.

“I feel my recent Test performances have not been up to my expectations but, if selected and with Mushtaq on my side, I hope to play a big part in the team’s overall objective of winning the first Test series in England since 1996.

Younis Khan has stated that he is not sure if he will be continuing after the tour as batting consultant but he is available if needed.

Younis Khan is cringe.

Didn't like him taking credit for Babar Azam's first day exploits in the first test and then not owning up when team batted badly through the tour. Didn't like him bowing to Hafeez either in first T20. Reminded me of high fives and smiles between Misbah and Afridi in matches they would go on to lose. Purely for the camera.

Younis' results this tour have been mixed but his theatrics have been first class.

The coach's job is to be in the background and do his thing.

Barring that second innings in the first test match on the tour. I think our batsmen have punched above their weight in this series

Lahore: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is looking forward to continuing with Younis Khan as national team’s batting coach, sources told ARY News.

According to the sources, PCB’s chief executive Wasim Khan will meet the former cricketer next week to discuss his role in the board for future. He is also likely to coach age group teams timely alongside national team’s coaching.

Sources further said that all stakeholders are on one page for the permanent appointment of Khan, however, the things are yet to be finalised.

It must be noted here that 10,000+ Test runs getter Khan was appointed national team’s batting coach for recently concluded England tour. Pakistan lost the Test series 1-0 whereas leveled T20I series 1-1.

Seems "mamla" is set and he will get a permanent role.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has offered former Test captain Younis Khan the chance to head its High Performance Centre in Karachi besides working as batting consultant with the national team.
A reliable source in the Board said that Younis has been offered a full-time job as head of the HPC in Karachi at the National Stadium in addition to his role as batting consultant, a report by Press Trust of India agency said.

The 42-year-old Younis accompanied the Pakistan squad to England earlier this year but took time out as batting consultant in the home series against Zimbabwe.

The former top batsman is slated to accompany the Pakistan squad again to New Zealand for the full tour in December-January next year.
Last year, the PCB had also held negotiations with Younis to work as head coach with the Pakistan junior and ‘A’ teams or as batting coach at the High Performance Centre in Lahore but the talks failed over apparent issues of authority and pay package.

The PCB eventually appointed former Test batsman Ijaz Ahmed as head coach of the junior and ‘A’ teams.

Right-handed Younis, who smashed a Pakistan record 10,099 runs at a healthy average of 52.12 during an illustrious 118-Test career that ended in 2017, is said to have undergone a dramatic change to his personality and temperament while with the Pakistan team in England and head coach, Misbah-ul-Haq is said to have conveyed only good words about him to the PCB.

Younis himself has admitted that after making some mistakes in the past due to his temperament he has changed and mellowed down in life as he wants to contribute to Pakistan cricket by passing on his experience to the youngsters.—Agencies
