ISLAMABAD: Minister of State for Climate Change Zartaj Gul Wazir had social media in stitches on Saturday after she provided a novel definition of COVID-19.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Feb2020, WHO announced an official name COVID-19 for novel coronavirus outbreak <br>In COVID-19<br>CO' stands for 'corona<br>VI' for 'virus<br>D' for disease and<br>19 for 2019(year it emerged)<br>But according to highly educated minister, 19 stands for whatever points, any country wanna adopt <a href="https://t.co/50ELJ0YPKl">pic.twitter.com/50ELJ0YPKl</a></p>— Dr Humma Saeef (@HummaSaif) <a href="https://twitter.com/HummaSaif/status/1274409659689033729?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">June 20, 2020</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

"COVID-19 means that it has 19 points that can be applied in any country in any way," said during a current affairs show on PTV News.

Actually, COVID-19 means 'Coronavirus disease 2019'. The 'CO' in the word stands for corona, 'VI' for virus and 'D' for disease. Formerly, this disease was referred to as ‘2019 novel coronavirus’ or ‘2019-nCoV.’

Gul's novel definition of the virus stirred a storm on social media, with Twitterati posting her video clip defining the disease and taking shots at the minister for not knowing enough about it.

The minister took to Twitter a few hours after her video clip started trending on social media, to issue a clarification.

"Every day I appear on national TV and speak without a piece of paper (parchi)," she tweeted. "Wanted to say that the infections effect and intensity varies across different countries. Instead of crying on the situation over a minor mistake, maybe that will be better for them. I am not afraid of criticism, it strengthens me."

This joker government is becoming a parody of itself. I don’t think there is anyone in PTI with an IQ of 100+.

These are the type of charlatans Imran Khan has unleashed on the nation to build Naya Pakistan.

COVID-18 (tabdeeli virus) is definitely far deadlier than COVID-19. The symptoms are in front of us.

It has reached a point where you cannot even laugh or cry.

Zartaj Gul probably thinks climate change is switching from summers to winters.

I bet our federal minister of climate change doesn’t have a clue.

“N95 mask is called N95 because it is available in 95 countries” - Zartaj Gul

Lol, as i expected, Mamoon is the top critic (if not the only critic) of this thread.

I think we need to focus on real issues, rather than this silly matter of definition.

I also think it is high time that the government ministers avoid coming on TV talk shows. I would rather they be doing their jobs which certainly doesnt include participating in the gazillion TV programmes. Let the opposition do that.

When a Minister who is In charge of Climate change spouts this sort of non sense, it reflects on her competency and on Imran Khan who gave this idiotic Person the charge of dealing with a scientific department like Climate Change.

This is an issue with parliamentary democracy. The MP are just common people, we need to understand that MPs have a team who did all the work. MPs themselves are just front man/woman.

There is no excuse for being a duffer. This “common woman” is the federal minister of climate change and I bet she doesn’t know more about climate change than a 5 year old.

I mean you have to admire her creativity at least. She is probably the only person in the world who has broken down COVID-19 in this fashion, that too on tv.

This is right up there with our science & technology minister claiming that Pakistan launched the Hubble telescope into space.

Naya Pakistan is a gift that keeps on giving.

And do you think this government of jokers have any idea how to resolve the “real issues”?

This type of goof up cannot be ignored and the country is doing the right thing by laughing at her and the messiah who appointed her in the first place.

One can only imagine the reaction of the Y brigade had a PMLN or PPP leader made this statement. She makes Maryam Nawaz look like genius, and she has had her moments.

I wonder how thick and dumb do you have to be to serve as a federal minister in Madinah riyasat of Pakistan.

Perhaps there needs to be limit of posts per poster per hour per thread..

We need to sign a petition for renaming Dunning-Kruger effect as Imran-Khan effect.

Honestly, its not funny. It's just sad. Earlier Fawad Choudhary was called today's solar eclipse a 'lunar eclipse' on his twitter and now I see this.

If the ministers are idiots and yes men what is this government ever going to accomplish. I find it hard to believe they don't have any educated people to fill these positions.

Little did PTI supporters knew 2 years ago that come 2020, they would be defending the minister of climate change for stating that Imran Khan is responsible for the increase in rainfall and snowfall, and they would also be defending the science and technology minister for calling solar eclipse a lunar eclipse, not to mention how he stated that Pakistan launched the Hubble telescope into space.

These are the type of duffers Imran Khan has unleashed on the nation to realize the dream of Naya Pakistan. He scammed his supporters real good, but I think we cannot feel sorry because this is what you deserve when you start worshiping a leader and lose the ability to think for yourself.

I was about to put this up!She will probably say solar eclipse only happened because of Imran Khan.

These people can be convinced that Imran Khan was the one to plant the idea of Pakistan in the heads of M. Jinnah, Iqbal etc.

Mamoon enough of this bachpana, u have a lot more better and more worthy things to criticize this government, which I am also no fan of, but you are keep ranting about this non issue or kinda slip of the tongue like no minister ever and anywhere else talked dumb before. Give it a rest and make some good constructive criticism. Enough of this childish trolling. And good on PTI supporters atleast they are not defending this stupid and idiotic statement. This government better get its act together or people will be forced to read elect the lesser evil looters than these bigger evil but clean messiahs.

This is not slip of tongue. This is an example of an ignorant, uninformed, low-intellect person having excessive confidence.

She clearly took her time in thinking what the ‘19’ in COVID-19 stands for, when she could have taken 2 mins to google and find out.

She deserves all the criticism in the world. If she is not criticized, the other duffers in PTI government will not think twice before passing statements.

It seems like IK has all jaahils in the government roles which is no surprise as the country has no set benchmarks in the first place.

Funny, she sounds like a typical NS supporter, now PTI also have their own , self made idiots.

She made a mistake and apologized for it. Seems as if people want to hang her for a stupid mistake. She is being bullied on twitter by patwaris and jiyalas while they had no issue with barish ati hai tu pani ata hai.

I agree with this post wholeheartedly. Mamoon is a thoughtful guy but unfortunately wastes his time with these petty arguments with die-hard PTI fans.

It would be better for Mamoon and others to spend your talents and energies on more positive things, on constructive dialogue and ways of working together to improve the status of the country. This negative discourse is not useful for anyone.

For example, I personally would love to hear the views of Mamoon on PTI's performance with respect to healthcare in KPK. I understand that you're a doctor based in Peshawar. So your views on this would be very insightful and welcome. Also, I have yet to see anyone commenting on KPK Health (and Finance) Minister Taimur Khan Jhagra's performance. How's his team doing? Are there any published performance indicators? I remember Imran Khan promising to bring a culture of performance measurement and tracking in government. What's the latest on that?

This was no slip of tongue. The women , according to her own best knowledge believed in what she was saying. And she is a state minister, unbelievable, height of stupidity.

Seems like PTI ministers tend to make a lot of such mistakes with Fawad calling the Solar eclipse a Lunar eclipse and Zartaj saying that the rain and snowfall that happened were because of Imran Khan. You'd expect the ministers of science and climate change would be somewhat educated.

However, this also drives a discussion around the type of people running the country. The ministers seem daft. Are these the people driving the policies? If so, it's clear why we are in the position we are in now.

Looking at social media and memes on her and PTI, one thing is clear, more and more people are becoming anti PTI and the youth who was once IK's biggest force is the one taking on him. How the table turns within span of 2 years and IK has no one to blame but his own pathetic decisions from day 1.

This nation did what it should have and that is gave him a chance to lead but he has been very disappointing.

She is a junior minister in the climate change ministry. She is not the health minister. PMIK, Dr Zafar Mirza and Dr Faisal Sultan hold a press conference on a near daily basis. Its your own jahalat that you ignore that and instead refer to Zartaj Gul for advice on corona. Just like there is no cure for corona, there is no cure for paindu pana either.

You should be the last person to talk about the type of people running the country. You are a patwari, let me remind you how former law minister of Punjab Rana Sannuallah said it is like going to hajj when receiving NS at the airport. He also said there is nothing illegal in opening a bank account in someone else's name.

Firstly, she is not a junior minister in the climate change ministry. She is the minister of climate change.

So you're saying climate change is not a major issue for Pakistan and PTI have created a ministry for nothing and are putting an idiot there just to please some people?

She is not the minister of climate change you are uninformed as usual, not surprised. Malik Amin Aslam is the minister of climate change, she is "minister of state" which as per constitution is a junior minister.

No wonder Dr Yasmeen Rashid called you people "ajeeb makhlooq" and "jahil".

First it was "Germany and Japan share a border" then it was "Pakistan launched Hubble". Now this.

When will this spineless bunch ever learn?

:))) :))) :))) bunch of clowns tbh and the WWE wrestler aka "Fawad Ch" is the king of these dumb statements (ofcourse when he is not busy body slamming journalists)

Tabdeeli agiey!!

She said it against lahoris I think, so you are suggesting all lahoris are like that "Ajeeb Makhlook" and "jahil" cause we already have a lahori Jahil-e-azam in office?

wow so you finally realized that the guy on top is not at all component

What do you expect from these people when their own leader is so non serious about the current situation and calls this virus just a normal flu .. ??

She should know better. This is not the first time. How hard is it to accept that she woefully out of her depth when it comes to science and logic too and shouldn't hold position such as the state minister for climate change?

But Imran stated for 24 years that he would set the benchmark. Are these street urchins is definition of benchmark?

This is the main point, isn't it. Atleast for me. For years he has said that inadequate, incompetent people holding positions is why were are in a mess and he will bring in educated people fit for the jobs. And now when the time has come for him to act on it, he is doing the same thing he criticised other before him of.

And it is not a one off incident that can be ignored. It's spread everywhere to the point where it has become the norm.

I attribute to a simple human reality. People in job interviews can talk excellently and give a wonderful impression. But a job interview is not always an indicator of how you will do when doing the job in the hot seat, under pressure.

This was the classic case with the Asad Umar fiasco. Asad Umar from 2012 to 2018 created such a masterful impression on Imran Khan and it was a given all these years that he would be ptis finance minister. IK got a real shocker when he saw Asad Umars ability and performance in the hotseat and realized that he had been taken for a ride.

I am sure that the vast majority of people in his cabinet have given him the same experience which is why now in the pti cabinet of 50 people, only 6 are pti officials whereas the rest are either his coalition partners or technocrats. I think pti and Imran Khan should have tested these people in kpk when pti was in charge there from 2013 to 2018 to see what these people were made off.

There are two possibilities:

(1) he pulled off a scam. He lied in his election campaign in order to attract the masses. Deep down he knew that we he claimed was unrealistic.

OR

(2) he was as naive, delusional and idealistic as your average PTI supporter. He thought being the PM would be like captaining a cricket team. Every player in his team would suddenly turn into world beaters under the guidance of “Kaptaan”

So he is either fake or delusional. It depends on whether you choose (1) or (2).

Either way, he is clearly not worth supporting because he cannot be trusted.

I think pti and Imran Khan should have tested these people in kpk when pti was in charge there from 2013 to 2018 to see what these people were made off.

I don't think that is the only factor. IK overrates his thinking. He thinks he is some kind of a philosopher and unique personality and there is no one in Pakistan that he should consult before making a big decision.

Classic exmaple is CM Punjab who doesn't fit the profile but because IK has made a wrong move first now he don't want to change him because that will give him a bad impression like guilty of making a blunder.

Pretty sure most of founder of PTI and old class of PTI have left Imran Khan because of his overconfidence and failing to listen their point of view when he started tasting political success.

On the other hand, there are some level-headed individuals too...

But Imran stated for 24 years that he would set the benchmark. Are these street urchins is definition of benchmark?

Not much he can do when there is no benchmark set in the country by others for the last 30 years. The same old ones recycled and will carry on happening unless something grave happens to shake this system.

Tou phir lambi lambi chornay ki kya zarurat thi?

He spent 20+ years talking about how he will bring change and do things differently.

Now please don’t say that all politicians do that. Imran was not supposed to be like all politicians. He was supposed to be different and that is how he managed to attract voters.

Looks like Naya Pakistan slogan was only for creating hype. He has successfully scammed his supporters who were convinced by his tall claims and thought he would do things differently.

:ik Kyonke main shaadi kar sakoon lol :))

Apart from that not much really...I am not so sure if he will get his full term even though I do hope he does and nothing untowards happens in this time because at least he deserves a full tenure in his first government.

We can only hope that things improve in the next few years, but I won't hold my breath. :))

ISLAMABAD: Minister of State for Climate Change Zartaj Gul Wazir has once again graciously given the Pakistani Internet community meme fodder, saying former president Gen Zia-ul-Haq was born on August 17 — when, in fact, the former military dictator was assassinated on this date.

Speaking during a current affairs talk show on a private TV channel, Zartaj Gul Wazir — in what ultimately became a failed jibe at the PML-N — told lawmaker Mian Javed Latif she wanted to congratulate him on the birth anniversary of his party’s "founder", Gen Zia-ul-Haq.

"I want to congratulate Mian Javed Latif for it's probably the birthday of Gen Zia-ul-Haq — who created this party [the PML-N] — as far as I remember," the PTI minister said.

The anchor and other participants in the show were left dumbfounded on the state minister’s lack of knowledge about the political history of Pakistan.

Anchorperson Nadeem Malik then corrected her, saying "today is August 17 when Gen Zia and many others were killed in a plane crash in 1988".

Despite being corrected, Zartaj tried to save the crumbling pieces of her sarcastic comment, saying: "Okay, whatever, even if it was an accident, they should celebrate it because he created the party. They should commemorate the anniversary of his martyrdom."

Fellow talk show guests — Sindh government spokesperson Senator Murtaza Wahab and Latif, the PML-N leader — were speechless, with the former putting his head in his hands and the latter showing an expression of contempt.

Minister for Climate Change Zartaj Gul said Monday that the government is planning to generate energy from cow dung available at Bhains colony to power buses in Karachi.

The minister, briefing the Senate on government initiatives, said that the amount of diesel and petrol being imported in Pakistan was Euro Five quality — and the amount of sulfur in Euro Five was 5%.

Gul said that Punjab had tightened fines to reduce vehicle pollution and cracked down on Iranian smuggled oil to overcome an annual loss of Rs250 billion.

The climate change minister said that 1,100 petrol pumps had been shut down after the operation on Balochistan's border, and at present, as many as 1,800 petrol pumps are operating illegally across the country.

Moreover, the state minister said that iron factories in Islamabad were being monitored for industrial pollution.

Cheema apologises to Zartaj Gul after NA ruckus

A heated exchange between MNA belonging to treasury benches Tariq Bashir Cheema and opposition leader Zartaj Gul led to a ruckus in the National Assembly on Thursday, with the opposition demanding that Cheema's membership be suspended.

According to Express News, the meeting of the National Assembly was held under the chairmanship of Speaker Ayaz Sadiq.

During Cheema’s speech, bitter sentences were exchanged between him, Iqbal Afridi and Zartaj Gul.

Cheema stated that the quorum for the budget was achieved during the PTI government through a dinner hosted at the Prime Minister's House. He further explained that Pervez Khattak informed him of General Faiz's attendance, who had previously ensured the fulfillment of the quorum in the House.

After the bitter exchange between treasury and opposition benches, Cheema approached Zartaj Gul and spoke to her. After which Gul started shouting and claimed that Cheema had said something rude to her.

A ruckus broke out in the House subsequently with Cheema swiftly leaving the House. Members of the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) tried to go to the government lobby where Cheema had disappeared. Additional security was called in to control the ensuing situation.

Atif Khan, Iqbal Afridi and other leaders of the SIC reached the government gate, but the security personnel and PPP leaders blocked the way. As the situation became tense, the speaker immediately adjourned the meeting till tomorrow morning.

However, the members of the Sunni Ittehad Council were adamant to go to the government lobby and when the security kept stopping them, more people were called in.

SIC Chairman Hamid Raza also stood in front of the government gate where it was told that the exchange of harsh words between Tariq Bashir Cheema and Zartaj Gul was the reason for the commotion.

PPP leader Raja Pervaiz Ashraf also arrived to explain to the members of the SIC while PPP's Agha Rafiullah took Cheema out of the House. Later, members of the SIC reached the speaker's chamber.

Iqbal Afridi told the speaker that Cheema used abusive language against Gul, adding that we will not leave him under any circumstances. “This person has insulted a woman… we demand that his membership be terminated immediately,” he said.

Discussions were then held on this matter with PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar, other PTI leaders and the Speaker, which included PTI MNAs Asad Qaiser, Opposition Leader Omar Ayub and Mehmood Khan Achakzai.

During the discussions, Zartaj Gul stood up and said that I will not leave the chamber until the membership of Tariq Bashir Cheema is terminated. On this, Speaker Ayaz Sadiq assured Zartaj Gul of taking strict action against Cheema. However, the opposition refused to accept the order for the suspension of Tariq Bashir Cheema’s membership. The speaker asked for footage of the meeting.

The opposition demanded that Tariq Bashir Cheema should be suspended for the entire budget session, demanding that Tariq Bashir Cheema should apologize on the floor. On this the Speaker assured that Tariq Cheema would apologize, but he would not be suspended for the budget session. Show flexibility on demand, he asked opposition members.

The opposition leaders said that a motion to suspend the membership of Tariq Bashir Cheema will be presented in the National Assembly through which Tariq Bashir Cheema will be prevented from participating in the ongoing session.

Later on, a meeting of government and opposition leaders was held in the speaker chamber in which Tariq Bashir Cheema was called. The speaker persuaded Tariq Bashir to apologise to Zartaj Gul and asked him to be a bigger person. Cheema then agreed to apologise and said that I am sorry for my words and I apologise to Zartaj Gul. To which, Zartaj Gul accepted the apology.

According to the spokesperson of the National Assembly, the matter has been settled amicably with the efforts of Speaker Ayaz Sadiq.

Tariq Bashir Cheema suspended from NA over Zartaj Gul spat

The National Assembly session, presided over by Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, concluded amidst heated exchanges and significant parliamentary decisions.

Despite his apology, Speaker Ayaz Sadiq suspended PML-Q MNA Tariq Bashir Cheema for the entire session of the day due to a bitter exchange between Cheema and Zartaj Gul the previous day. The decision to suspend Cheema was made to maintain decorum and uphold parliamentary standards.

The question raised by the speaker in this regard was accepted by the House.

Meanwhile, in a ruling by the speaker, TikTokers, YouTubers, and media personnel were banned from recording videos in the corridors of parliament. This decision aimed to ensure the sanctity of parliamentary proceedings and prevent disruptions caused by unauthorized video recordings.

The National Assembly approved a motion for the formation of standing committees, empowering the speaker to form and include members in these committees. The motion, presented by Syed Naveed Qamar of the PPP, was accepted by the House, facilitating the establishment of essential parliamentary committees.

Moreover, Defense Minister Khawaja Asif emphasized the importance of maintaining parliamentary decorum amidst gatherings of party members outside the National Assembly Hall. "People belonging to one party gather outside the National Assembly Hall. This is Parliament House, not Mochi Darwaza or D Chowk," he remarked.

The session was adjourned indefinitely, marking the conclusion of the fifth session of the National Assembly.

On Thurday, PTI-backed Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) claimed that PML-Q MNA Cheema abusive language with SIC lawmaker Zartaj Gul.

Apart from opposition members, Cheema's behaviour was also termed inappropriate by the government benches. Women members of the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) expressed solidarity with Zartaj Gul. Tariq Bashir Cheema went to Zartaj Gul and said obnoxious words to PTI-backed SIC MNA Zartaj Gul.
