[VIDEOS] Abdullah Shafique - International performance watch

Probably only impressions he will have created will be on the bench. has sat on the benches so long :qdkcheeky

Fair point. His bum mark on the bench would have made an impression.

Not his fault though. Incredibly weird from the TM. I haven't heard about him before this thread opened so now very keen to see what can he do?

I don't get this situation. He hasn't played enough domestic games and yet is picked in the team for what? A good technique.

Might make his debut in the upcoming Test match in WI but I believe Saud Shakeel should be preferred even if he has to bat out of position.

Abdullah out for 9 as Pakistan Shaheen's reply to Sri Lanka A's 141

Abdullah Shafique reaches 52* on Day 1 of 2nd 4-Day game vs SL A

Abdullah 89 not out.Match delayed by rain. What a surprise.Abdullah,Banglzai,Omair and Nasir are future openers for Pakistan. They need to play for another 12-18 months in domestic and A tours.

Hurraira is another one he's a brilliant player of spin and a superb fielder

Very very interesting Pakistan have an abundance of upcoming openers while having very few options in the middle order. Quite an interesting change from the past few decades.

doesnt matter as long as azhar is blocing a spot. bang tour would be ideal time to team one of two youngsters but pak will give butt and ali a chance to hold down spot in team for another year.

Out for 117 - excellent innings which will hold him in good stead for thee future.

Excellent player.
He can make it big at international level. Seems to have all the component.

Surprisingly A.S is playing in only his 3rd FC 4 day Match

Now has 2 FC centuries

Seems like a good bowling pitch, too, as SL have lost 9 wickets for 60 odd already. It's very heartening that Abdulla was able to score a hundred on a difficult pitch.

If Misbah had bitten the bullet and played Abdullah in Zim, we would be close to finding out if he was the man by now. No doubt he would have struggled in the Windies but we would have a decent a idea if he is the man. Instead we won't have any idea until a year later.

would be very surprised if he got a go against bang, they gonna let imran butt score a fifty in four innings then play for another year.

Butt looked poor, and Abid doesn't look much better. For the 1st time in 20 years we have a decent crop of young players that have potential. The last lot with Farhat, Nazir, Umar didn't have a brain cell between them and wasted their talent. I am hoping for better outcomes this time.

The set up is a lot more professional too. Shafique and co. are actually into fitness etc. Data, tactics, planning and the need for a calm head trump most bouts of testosterone induced brain fades. I don’t think any of these batsmen have grown up idolising Shahid Afridi the batsman either - a syndrome which may have cost us a few players.

They need to keep their heads about them and should be better. Let’s see.

I did not follow much of his progress until now, on what performance was he selected for A team, what exactly has been his FC record , just wondering .

Based upon recommendation from coaches and Babar.

Shafique selected for Pakistan Test squad for tour of Bangladesh - another chance to carry drinks or will he get to play?

He will play and needs to be given a run. I want to see him play at least 5 tests and then we will get a idea if he will cut it. Tbh you can idea after a couple of tests like with Butt, but you still need to give them a longer rope just in case they have a bad start.

Shafique is a technically correct player. He is on par with Babar. He will come good.Butt is not an opener. His technique is very poor.

its all well and good saying shafique is technically correct, but i dont think hes ever been tested against the short ball like hed be in tests. id say he needs more FC experience, but given the pitches in domestic i think he wont learn much there, might as well give him a run, he cant be as bad as imran butt the batsman.

Perfect kind of platform for him to debut and Naseem to get his rhythm back.

My test XI would be:

1. Shafique
2. Abid
3. Azhar
4. Babar
5. Fawad
6. Rizwan
7. Faheem
8. Hassan
9. Noman
10. Yasir
11. Shaheen

I would play azhar at the opening slot and saud at 3

Abdullah Shafique has been named in the 12-player squad for the first Test, hopefully, will be given a chance.
He's been with the team for the past 1 year, definitely deserves a chance now.

Can you please post the 12 men squad?

Squad (in alphabetical order):

Babar Azam - Captain
Mohammad Rizwan - Vice captain (wicketkeeper)
Abdullah Shafique
Abid Ali
Azhar Ali
Faheem Ashraf
Fawad Alam
Hasan Ali
Imam-ul-Haq
Nauman Ali
Sajid Khan
Shaheen Shah Afridi

Thanks.
Means 4 bowlers, all playing.
2 out of Imam, Abid Ali and Abdullah will play. I will not be surprised if Babar plays it safe and plays his best friend Imam.

Among Abdullah, Imam and Abid Ali, I will play Abdullah and Imam. So Babar will be right, to give his best friend Imam a chance, since Imam has got a higher ceiling than Abid Ali.

no way are pak selecting him ahead of imam, because one double hundred on a patta outweighs being selected for Pakistan A and scoring a hundred away.. :babar

Deserves a chance for what? He’s played 3 first class games!? Saud Shakeel or Kamran Ghulam are the ones who deserve a chance and have actually earned that chance

Thanks.

Azhar should be out but who has the courage ? Babar will not do this to his Lahori friend and our "culture" teaches us to respect the elderly , to hell with Pakistan cricket and its future.

This is kind of gamble you have to play with someone with extra-ordinary talent. Wasim Akram, Waqar and Aaqib were discovered by IK like this but there is no h/o discovering and fast tracking a young batsman in our recent history . And, Babar and Mohammad Wasim don't possess an eye to unearth a talent. Other question is whether Abdullah is really that an exciting talent ? I have been asking this question from the people on this forum who have seen him and know about him and they seem to agree with all the hype about him. I will keep my finger crossed and hoping they are right.

Tbh he’s Babar’ pick he likes him a lot.

Too early in his career, a few failures and he'll be blasted all over soon much I reckon he won't get another chance even if he earns it over the years. There's also a possibility that he takes a mental hit which can hamper his career.

He has been scoring hundred with the team and ahas been on the cusp of selection.

If it's too soon, he shouldn't be with the team then. This is his second test he is missing out on the QeA trophy. Abdullah simply has to play tomorrow. You don't let your best upcoming batsman miss two full domestic seasons and then make him carry drinks. Especially if the competition is Imam and Abid.

I think he will be better than both names you have mentioned and it's a moot point anyway, since both don't bat in the top order.

He looks technically sound but that doesn’t mean he’s ready for the rigours of international cricket. His technique would’ve been less relevant in limited overs cricket and yet in the couple games he played in New Zealand this year he looked hurried against the short ball. It would be better for him to display his technique and skill and hone his talent for a season than to destroy his confidence by throwing him into the side too early.

Saud Shakeel deserved it alot more based upon his domestic stats.

Definitely Saud has averaged close to 50 in majority of his domestic seasons.

Yes he is week against the short ball like we seen in the t20s he played internationally

Its a good opposition for him to debut against. Bangladesh aren't strong and are trying a lot of new players. Makes sense for him to play. Ideally it would be a solid opposition for Saud Shakeel to make his debut against as well. Azhar Ali hasn't sodded off yet.

Terrible decision to give him a debut. He has played only 3 fgames. He will end up failing. Even if he performs you cant be playing this inexperienced player against good oppositions. Should had been saud shakeel or someone elae playing

We will end up wasting another debut spot

A better proposition than recalling Imam in my opinion. Our team management isn't inclined on trying makeshift openers so the chance of Kamran Ghulam and Saud Shakeel are very low. I would have loved to have rested Azhar and played Kamran instead but that won't happen.

Saud Shakeel bats at 3 and thiers no way Azhar will open.

Pakistan again with these bad decisions, from debuting Naseem shah and Musa khan for the embarrassing Australia tour in 2019.

Now they selected Naseem Shah in the squad for some reason and selected Abdullah Shafique even though he has played only 3 FC. matches.

hes been around the test squad for more than a year now, u cant stop him from playing fc cricket on the pretend of being the backup opener and then not try him when u finally drop an opener.

should have been allowed to play more fc cricket, but given he was in the squad, and in the Pakistan A squad he had to play ahead of Imam.

Should get both tests now.

Looking forward to see this lad in Test cricket.

Bright prospect who is very highly rated by many.

100 on debut anyone?

Not impress with his batting, he is way too nervours. He will get out sooner or later, Bangladesh already saved him by not taking a review.

Nobody cares how well you can stop the ball, you need to score runs

Its his debut match .....The dravids ..the pujaras and rahanas what do they do..obviously you have to score runs but in test cricket your technique is the first thing you need to have to succeed.

I hope I am wrong but another Sami Aslam in the making and complain that I didn't get enough chances lol

He is maybe a little bit nervous but that will happen to anyone so young making his test debut.
Important thing is, he is looking good, solid.
The moment he will score some runs, the nervousness will disappear.

Were you expecting him to score a century in 10 overs?.He has been very solid so far.Don’t forget he is on debut.Judge him after he has played at least five tests.

Not having seen this guy bat before , just looking at Cricinfo scorecard I too was thinking another Sami Aslam maybe as in a defensive mindset batsman.

Then I watched an innings of his on YT where he played a quickfire 50 with some very stylish looking strokes off the likes of Sohail Tanvir , the boy looks like a talent.

He definitely has the talent to play strokes, but the technique and temperament to score consistently and get 100s, only time will tell. Otherwise if talent to play great strokes was all it took then Imran Nazir, Umar Akmal and Ahmad Shezad would have all been all time greats , as with an innings of even 10 runs they could play the most gorgeous looking strokes.

Noone was expecting a 50 ball hundred but he was doing tuk tuk without any intention of scoring runs and he was out earlier too (Bangladesh didnt take the review )

Abdullah has more range of shots than most in Pakistan right now.

He isn't going to go all out on test debut.

Abid scored double his runs, but anyone with an eye for talent can spot the difference in the two.

Abdullah is a WORLD CLASS talent.
Varun in the mud once again. Crying as usual.

So far solid and doing his job.

Looks like the perfect pitch for a batsman to debut on.

Doesnt look like a natural stroke player to me could be debut nerves but credit to him for digging in.

Yes it is a good pitch to debut on. In fact this entire WTC cycle is a good time to induct a few new batsmen with no difficult away tours. If I was Azhar Ali and been playing like him for last 4 years I would have just retired and let saud shakeel settle in. Saud is at his peak whereas Azhar is well past it

I know he is on debut. But an innings this slow on a wicket like this is criminal.
