Central Punjab opener Abid Ali complained of chest pain during his innings against Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy final-round match at the UBL Sports Complex, Karachi today. Abid left the batting crease at 61 in Central Punjab’s second innings

He was taken immediately to a cardiac hospital where he was diagnosed as a case of Acute Coronary Syndrome. He is under the care of Consultant Cardiologist who is liaising with PCB medical team regarding further treatment. He is currently stable.

It is requested to respect his and the family's privacy at this time.

May Allah give him a speedy recovery

On a side not chris cairns aorta ruptured

Quite a few footballers have suffered heart ailment recently with lindeloff going off and Sergio aguero having to retire .

Keep getting those covid jabs folks any confidence there has been a rise of cases like this .

Matt le tissier has called for an enquiry.

Can he play cricket after this?

Acute coronary syndrome is a term for a group of conditions that suddenly stop or severely reduce blood from flowing to the heart muscle. When blood cannot flow to the heart muscle, the heart muscle can become damaged. Heart attack and unstable angina are both acute coronary syndromes (ACS).

As Per Google.

Is it some sort of Vaccine effect? Look at Sergio Augero

Any heart problems it's probably best to retire I don't think he will able at a high level of sports .

There's a paper by Dr gundry linking mrna vaccines to increased risk mRNA COVID Vaccines Dramatically Increase Endothelial Inflammatory Markers and ACS Risk as Measured by the PULS Cardiac Test.

There must be a reason why there is a spate of sportsmen suffering heart related problems since the vaccination programs it cant be coincidence.

Yes there can be an effect of the vaccine buy doesn't they happen a few weeks after and I assume being a professional sportsman he would have been vaxxed a while, unless it was booster.

He's very lucky that it didn't manifest as a full blown attack. Hope he gets well soon.

Of course his playing career will get affected, but he should look at the positive side of things. It could've been much worse.

James Taylor similarly had to Retire from a heart condition

Wish Abid Ali the best of health for the future

Praying for the young man!

ACS have been raised in a number of athletes over the years, there are a fair few papers on the increased stress top athletes place on the heart and a link to ACS (among other conditions).

A come back is not off the cards of course, so let's see.

I think I'll stick with matt le tissiers view in 17yrs of top flight football whilst playing on the pitch he never once witnessed a player going off for heart problems. And in his days players drank hard and smoked as well

I'm not sure what this has to do with my post?

And regardless of his playing career, we've seen players go off with heart conditions and not only that, but have cardiac arrests live on TV.

Not the spate they have been happening recently those players who died there have been question marks whether they had a hidden heart condition or were using substances.

Recently there's been a spate of footballers and other sportsmen suffering heart problems on field and clutching their chests never has this been seen in one season so many players.

Only a week back a southend player abu agogo has been diagnosed with heart inflammation.

I've been watching cricket since the 90s and from my memory I can't remember any player clutching their chests or having heart related symptoms.on a pitch .

James taylor, ericksson

These are some cases that happened before covid

Ridiculous how we have people who question vaccines

Maybe it's covid and not the. Vaccine

Eeikaen wasn't vaccinated
Nor too obviously were mar vivein foe, or Fabrice muamba

Wishing him a speedy recovery. Sad news. Hope PCB provides an alternate employment to him like ECB did with James Taylor.

My fear is most Pakistani cricketers don’t have any other life skills apart from playing cricket. He will not be picked for internationals or PSL now due to this setback. I don’t know his financial background so hope he doesn’t find himself in a situation to play every league/ tournament to keep the house running.

Marc vivian foe was 2003 , muamba was 2012 , tiote was 2017 these are massive gaps and those players were rare tragedies before covid.

Since eriksen and covid there hasn't been gaps and there's too many players , there's been 5 from the top of my head this season . This is unprecedented you don't have so many players in such a short span clutching their hearts. Especially top level footballers with no medical conditions.

Le Tissier’s statement — he will have been implicitly referring to the Covid vaccine — is not quite accurate.

Young male footballers collapsing with heart conditions has been going on for many years. Fabrice Muamba and Marc Vivien-Foe are two prominent examples from a long time before the Covid pandemic.

Granted these collapses seem to be happening more and more as the years go on.

The list on this page (goes back to late 1800s) is unbelievably huge. Very sad to read about actually.

Not all heart related of course, but many have been.

Brutal list. I will never forget Daniel Jarque (only 26 years old when died) of RCD Espanyol.

Acute coronary syndromes, just like heart failure and stroke, are much more likely in people who have certain risk factors. These include:

Smoking
High blood pressure
High blood cholesterol
Diabetes
Physical inactivity
Being overweight or obese
A family history of chest pain, heart disease or stroke

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) have released a statement on Abid Ali's health condition.

Pakistan opening batter was taken to the hospital after he complained of chest pain while batting during Central Punjab's Quaid-e-Azam trophy match against Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

In their statement, PCB said, "Central Punjab opener Abid Ali complained of chest pain during his innings against Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy final-round match at the UBL Sports Complex, Karachi today. Abid left the batting crease at 61 in Central Punjab’s second innings.

"Abid was taken immediately to a cardiac hospital where he was diagnosed as a case of Acute Coronary Syndrome. He is under the care of Consultant Cardiologist who is liaising with PCB medical team regarding further treatment. He is currently stable.

"It is requested to respect his and the family's privacy at this time.

"More details will be provided in due course."

Abid Ali returned to play for his domestic side Central Punjab after a brilliant outing in the two Tests against Bangladesh. He scored 133 and 91 in the two innings of the first Test in Dhaka and was awarded the Player of the Match in Pakistan's eight-wicket win.

In the second Test, he scored 39 in Pakistan's only innings as the visitors secured a thrilling innings win by 8 wickets to finish a clean sweep. He finished as the highest run-getter in the series and took home the Player of the Series award.

Spoke to a Cardiologist about this and this is correct.

I hope Abid gets well soon.

I think Chris Gayle also had a cardiac condition after a game, and went to the hospital where a surgery was performed. But I guess it was a congenital heart defect case.

Ridiculous how we have people who question vaccines

All Vaccines have side effects. Covid vaccines were made in record time, it's not improbable that they may have some side effects as well, which we'll only know over the course of next few years.

Wow can we stop with the anti-vax propaganda on this thread.

Also ACS is a very broad term. We should wait for more information before saying things like Abid Ali's career is over.

Please note

This thread is NOT for discussing vaccination effectiveness in general

That is being discussed in TPS.

Please keep all posts relevant to sports.

LOL Le Tiss is an anti-vaxxer and him calling for an enquiry is to point his finger at the vaccines, which some of the players haven't seen even had.

I hope the doctors help him via medications and techniques to carry on his playing career. He was just finding his feet for Pakistan in test cricket.

Wish the guy all the best.

Hope it's not too serious and he comes out of this with his cricket career intact.

wishing him a speedy recovery. would be very difficult to have his career curtailed making it to the squad after years of hard work.

No chance.

That’s really sad to hear.

At the same time though, Abid should take comfort in the fact that his condition has been caught before anything too serious happened, that he is getting the treatment he needs and that he will inshallah live a full life. Nothing is more important than health. Cricket is nothing in comparison, even for an international cricketer.

Can he play cricket after this?

There is no reason he cannot. It all depends upon whether he had any significant heart muscle damage or not , most likely he has not. After angioplasty/stent placement and some heart rehab he can be as fit as was ever or even better. I know many young people who underwent same procedure and were able to resume strenuous exercise . I know a person very well who ran NY marathon 8-9 months after his quadruple cardiac bypass. After a stent placement , Abid Ali should be fit to play in 2-3 months at the most.

Just saw that, he looks good, no shortness of breath , no obvious weakness. I'm sure he had a stent placement and should be discharge in 2-3 days, ( unless cardiac catheterization shows need for bypass surgery which is unlikely from his looks ) Physically he will be fine soon but will be on blood thinner for six months , so better avoid competitive cricket but will be fine after that .

Pretty sad for a guy of his age to go through that. Hope he recovers and goes back to living a healthy life.

The most common ACS are Angina, Myocardial Infarction(Heart Attack).

Angina are of three types, Stable, Unstable and Prinzmetal. Stable occurs with exertion, unstable due to a clot, and prinzmetal due to transient spasm of the artery itself due to either an intrinsic vascular muscle defect or a trigger(smoking, alcohol etc).

Heart needs to be kept in conditions that would keep the oxygen load to its min(rest, treatment with vasodilators and avoidance of stressors).

I don't know if he will get cleared to resume international cricket again but I just hope he is able to resume daily life activites and life.

Hope he makes a full recovery and healthy soon.

In terms of his cricketing career, should go by medical advice, but in the past guys like Rumman Raees have been told to stop playing cricket and they continue to do so.

Hope to see him back on the field. The guy has 9000 runs in first class cricket. Just a 1000 away from geting to 10k.

A well seasoned guy, hopefully he makes a come back to cricket.

Even if he doenst than I hope PCB helps him to get good gigs like James Taylor got under ECB

How many cricketers have been vaccinated and suffered from a heart condition? So far it's only Abid Ali.

Pakistan Test opener Abid Ali has undergone an angioplasty a day after he was taken to hospital following a complaint of chest pain while playing for Central Punjab against Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in the ongoing last round of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy in Karachi.

According to a PCB statement, he was taken to a specialist hospital immediately, "where he was diagnosed as a case of Acute Coronary Syndrome" or ACS. "

"He has undergone angioplasty and a stent has been inserted in one vein and he will undergo another small procedure before he is discharged from hospital," a source in the cricket board said.

In a message to his fans, Ali said he was doing okay and asked them to pray for his quick recovery.

Abid had returned to his domestic side, Central Punjab, following the recent Bangladesh tour, where he was Player of the Series for the Tests after scoring 263 runs at 87.66.

As aspected from his looks from video clip, Abid Ali had a stent inserted in one of his heart artery and looks like no damage done to his heart muscles . Hopefully he will be discharged in 2-3 days .

Physically he will be back to normal in 2-3 weeks and should be doing regular exercise and running , if he does , in coming weeks. I'm sure he will be advised not to participate in FC or international cricket for six month as he will be on Aspirin and Plavix ( a blood thinner ) after the stent insertion, to avoid any bleeding after a head or bad physical injury while playing cricket. He should be all cleared with no restriction to resume his cricket career, once plavix is discontinued after 6 months .

One guy in our local club in USA had similar happening while playing cricket, actually he collapsed on the ground, underwent similar procedure as Abid had and he was back playing cricket after two weeks and never missed a game after that. From most unfit player in the team, he became the fittest one after the procedure as he changed his diet and life style. He was older that Abid . I know him and now more than 10 years later , he never had any physical problem.

This isn't a medical opinion but trolling!

No chance.

Agree with below...

Wish Abid a speedy recovery, feel sad for the young man..hope he recovers quickly and do well in life..

No chance.

Are you a Cardiologist?
If not - please have some respect and provide good wishes at such a time. It is inappropriate to bring your normal negative nonsense to play at such a time.

Whilst there is hope - there is a chance.

Update on Abid Ali:

Abid under went a second procedure today. The procedure was successfully completed and he is recovering.

PCB medical team is liaising with Interventional Cardiologist regarding further treatment and rehabilitation. Abid is currently stable.

It is requested to respect his and the family's privacy at this time.

Am reading online that the Dr's have advised him to take a break from Cricket for the next year to year and a half and that the PCB is consulting Foreign Cardiologists to examine his reports and to conclude whether he can play cricket again or not.

Mamoon Junaids

Can he play cricket after this?

He probably will, but he risks becoming the next Wilf Slack.

Slack was an England and Middlesex opener who dropped dead at the crease at the same age as Abid Ali’s official age.

The fact that he had an angioplasty means he had unstable angina due to narrowing of the coronary arteries - not a cardiomyopathy like Muamba or Eriksen, or a heart rhythm problem like Aguero.

South Asians are often born with slightly narrower arteries but Abid carried too much weight for too long, plus I don’t know whether he ever smoked.

When a cricketer gets a middle-age related condition like this, you know he’s too old to be still playing.

Misbah and Younis were supremely fit, with the bodies of men a decade younger. Likewise Fawad Alam.

Whereas Abid Ali, Yasir Shah, Haris Sohail and Azhar Ali are the complete opposite.

From PCB

Abid Ali has commenced his rehabilitation. As part of this process, he did light walking in the morning without showing any discomfort. He will continue his rehab in the hospital until he is discharged early next week.

May Allah swt give him fast recovery. Just as he had started to look more assured at the crease. It seem Pakistan cricket is jinxed either the star performers do something dodgy to end their jeopardise their careers or bad luck hits them in form of injury or illness as in case of unfortunate Abid.

Without knowing Abid Ali's cath report ( angiogram ) I can't predict anything with great accuracy, but our experience in USA with sportsmen undergoing the heart procedure like Abid ALi had , has been very positive . If he continue to have good follow up with a good cardiologist and take good care of himself, regarding diet and exercise there is not reason he should be back to 100% of his previous level of fitness or even better after 2-3 months .

This heart attack might have been avoided if PCB had a SOP full health check up after 6 months like we see in football. ECG, Echocardiography and ETT would have alarmed the doctors.

Huge lessons for PCB these.

Based upon checking with specialists:

Abid can consider himself a very lucky guy. Lucky that he got to hospital when he did and should inshallah be able to play cricket again.

PCB don’t have any previous cardiac screening but he would have had to have had an exercises test to pick up what he had and they don’t even do any basic cardiac screening.

Key is now they get a decent Dr. who will put things in place for the PCB and also important that have medical staff at every game who can manage if a player has a collapse / cardiac arrest which they don’t have. This could prevent something like what happened to Muamba or Eriksen.

Just to clarify, his issue is not same as James Taylor whose issue was inherited whereas Abid acquired over time. Again very very fortunate he got to hospital in time.

James Taylor had a condition which is called ARVC whereas Abid Ali has Acute Coronary Syndrome.

Will Abid Ali return to cricket? Answer is InshaAllah but as with all of these things, all depends on his rehab and care.
