What a career this little champ had, a true encyclopedia for the youngsters signed off domestic cricket in style after winning the trophy at this year's National T20 Cup 2023.

Good player who had the potential to take the mantle from Inzy & Asher. Unfortunately, couldn’t live up to both the expectations and his potential.

Thanks for the memories.

A very good player for Pakistan.

The following is a personal opinion coming from me, I’ve met Asad (and won’t say where or when) and have to be honest-

Based on how he unprofessional he was, I’m very surprised he got to where he got to.

Education to a basic level has to be a must for our future players.

This lad can still play. He should've played more international cricket for Pakistan with the kind of class and talent he always had.

He played 77 test matches and never won a match for Pakistan. How underwhelming is that, he helped draw a match in start of his career that's where he got his only player of the match award. He had talent but could not handle pressure of the international level. He would crumble whenever the team was in pressure.

Technically he was better than azhar ali , was a lot more aggressive with the strokeplay when he first came on the scene but that was curtailed under misbah

Did tend to play angle bat towards leg which was a technical deficiency.

But in the end was a mental midget couldn't win games , or grit out and go and convert those starts or 50s into match winning hundreds, never really dominated the bowlers in the middle even when set.

So he has now officially retired?

Shafiq speaking in a presser:

“I am not feeling the same excitement and passion playing cricket and neither do I have the same fitness levels required for international cricket. Which is why I have decided to say goodbye to all cricket,”

“I have got the contract from the board and I am looking at it and hopefully it will be processed soon.”

Shafiq’s problem was that he wasn’t good enough to be consistent, his problem wasn’t handling pressure.

Pressure or no pressure, he was never consistent and this is why he never managed to average 45 and would hover between the 39-40 mark which is not good enough to be a fixture in the middle-order.

Almost all of his best hundreds have come under pressure situations but he was the type of batsman who would fail 8 out of 10 regardless of the situation.

A decent Test career but he played way more than he deserved to.

Last greatest innings by a Pakistani in Australia…

Unfulfilled promises for sure, but that was just his ceiling tbh. But still a force in domestics.

Feels like yesterday.

Enjoy retirement, Titan of Technique.

He played too many Tests.

Straight after the retirement of Younis and Misbah he failed miserably to lead the batting, hence should have been culled immediately.

To end up with an average of 38 (same average as Sarfraz) batting at no. 6 is simply unacceptable.

Anyway, wish him well in retirement!

I still think Shafiq deserves more credit than he gets. I believe he was integral for the many victories we scored in the UAE. Batting with the tail is an art. He did that job well and would take a 350 score to a 500+ with the tail.

Fawad or any alternative did not have the capability to score at a 60 SR with the tail and squeeze out vital runs.

Asad had a decent cricket. Made some valuable contributions to Pakistan. Can still remember his good knock in aus although in losing cause. Anyways farewell champ.

Normally when a cricketer retires you highlight some of their great matchwinning contributions but with Asad Shafiq I'm struggling.

He had an incredibly long rope by PAK standards yet never progressed beyond playing the role of second fiddle.

For all the cliched plaudits about his technique, his defence wasn't particularly compact.

He and Azhar had the opportunity to step out of the shadow of Younis and Misbah, and shepherd a young batting lineup but neither delivered.

A good batsman but didn't achieve much even after playing so many test matches. He was rightly discarded but I believe he should have been recalled specially after retirement of Azhar Ali. Many cricketers got extended rope in Pakistan cricket and I am little surprised why Asad didn't got a recall as he could have easily played for another 2-3 years.

His Test century at Gabba in 2016 will be remembered for a long time. It is one of the best Test centuries I have ever seen.

Waiting for Wahab to give him the call for Salman Butt's position in selection committee consultancy.

He really needed to step up when Misbah and Younis retired. But couldn't.

Maybe he was never good enough to handle that mantle which is why he failed. It's fine not every batter can be a great. But I think he played 25 tests too many for Pak. Still believe Fawad would have won us more matches had he been in Asad's place but Fawad was Australia's bunny.

Definitely. In fact I remember Fawad's ODI knock in Asia Cup against Bangladesh that helped won us the game. People remember Afridi's inning

He might be better suited to that position. He's played every domestic season for over a decade. Knows majority of players first hand.
Plus PCB needs to implement a diverse selection committee like India. 1 rep from all province or something. Atm we have 3 from Punjab alone.

He scored a good 100 in the final of Asia Cup as well even though he was striking at 35-40 for the first 80 balls or so. Right after that Asia Cup Fawad ran into Australia in that 3 ODI series which spelled the end of his ODI career.

Probably got an assurance that he'll become a selector.

Asad Shafiq has no ODI century.

A solid, old-school cricketer. A bit Pujara-like in the way he had a very specific and niche role in the batting lineup. He also had an understated batting style. A bit like his personality. An easy player to like.

Shame he couldn't work out ODI cricket. I don't know why because he has a very good List A record.

In any case, enjoy your retirement, Asad!

He was always very highly rated. I remember on a tour of England that Nasser mentioned that Mahela Jayawardne said look out for Asad Shafiq - he can play.

And he could definitely play...but was just highly inconsistent. I wonder if he had been dropped earlier whether he would have kicked on a bit more.

Averaging under 40 in tests after such a long career is quite poor.

Great to see him go off on a winning note :) I first saw him in 2011 World cup, at the time, i thought he was going to be a solid ODI batsman for Pakistan, turned out Test Cricket is where he played the most, and had some success, however I felt his ceiling was higher, and did not do justice to what could have been an awesome test career. I always liked him, and did enjoy his batting when he was on song.

All the best to Asad Shafiq for the future

Not a bad way to sign-off by lifting a trophy of probably the best domestic tournament.

The guy had talent but mentally he was weak. He should have owned the 4 spot but felt more comfortable hiding at 6. He even had the technique to open the batting but always took the easy option.

The fact that this 77 test match veteran was not able to regain his place in the side after being dropped at the age of 35 says a lot. Someone with that kind of experience and playing in the low standard Pakistan domestic cricket should easily have been able to pile on the runs at the domestic level to stake a claim for a recall but he could not do that either.

At one point in time, Asad was average 45-46 in test cricket but that fell down to 37 which tells you how terrible his performances were in the last few years of his career. He was over invested in.

One of the finest lower-middle-order batter for Pakistan. Good to see him retiring on a high note having a trophy in his hands. Farewell Asad.

Always sentimental to see someone retire that you saw their every first debut match. He had a brilliant start to his career, extremely focused, composure and timid. Did really well at #6.

However, extremely inconsistent and not a big game player, hence his career never took off but very professional, stayed away from all sorts of drama.

Thank you Asad Shafique, wish you a happy retirement!

Probably one of our best test number 6's we had in recent years and very pleasing on the eye when he was on form. It's shame he could not step up after the retirement of Misbah/Younus K.

He like Azhar should be involved in the Pakistan set up as he is controversy free and always tried his best playing for Pakistan.

Happy retirement Mr Shafiq.

Not completely or yet it seems!

Retired, yet still playing and taking up a spot that a younger player could be given.

Good old Pakistan cricket.

On the second day of the third round of the President's Trophy 2023-24, Asad Shafiq of SNGPL scored 77 runs off 140 balls in the first innings against SBP.

He bid farewell to all forms of cricket but is still playing in the President's Trophy 2023, scoring runs for SNGPL. Perhaps he had ongoing commitments with SNGPL for the tournament.

All forms of proper cricket. He sees this as the equivalent of club cricket

His century in Cape Town was awesome and I honestly believed he'd take us home during the Gabba test, but that ball from Starc came from nowhere. Wish him the best.

His greatest achievement was winning the favour of the PCB, his captain and team mates. Any other team, he would not play Test cricket for as long as he did.

So I consider Mr. Shafiq an overachiever, and therefore he did well for himself.

That is surprising considering how he's behaved as a player. Are you able to elaborate a bit without being too incriminating?

I believe there is some sort of final commitment by Asad Shafiq that he is still playing the president's trophy but it might be his last domestic tournament.

Asad Shafiq's fine innings of 69 runs off 50 balls at a striking rate of 138.00 before being run out by Abdul Faseeh in the 1st innings for SNGPL against KRL in the fourth round of President's Trophy 2023-24. It is his last tournament, and he is making it memorable for him.

Insanity has no limits this guy should have been in Australia and playing instead of Saud but hell no , likes and dislikes have ruined our cricket

Asad Shafiq remained unbeaten on 92 off 197 balls against SNGPL while playing for WAPDA, in a brilliant rearguard effort. He struck 16 boundaries in his approximately four-hour stay on the crease. As a result WAPDA triumphed against SNGPL today

One of the greatest middle order batters Pakistan has ever produced. Reminiscing of his famous 137 run knock vs Australia makes my eyes a little moist, if I am going to be perfectly honest. There will never be another one quite like you Asad Bhai. Rest easy sweet prince.

77 Tests, 60 ODIs and 10 T20Is
6,188 runs across all three formats
Most Test hundreds (9) for a batter at No. 6
Currently serving as a member of the national men's and women's selection committees

Happy birthday to Asad Shafiq

Happy birthday but his only impressive record is that no 6 record where he scored 9 centuries at that no.

Otherwise he was a bang avg test player and an atrocious odi and t20 player.

An avg of 38 with only 12 centuries in a whopping 77 tests is very medicore. He's above the likes of shan masood, Khurram manzoor etc etc but he's no where near the likes of azhar ali let alone actual test atg's like yousaf, younis etc.
