Azhar Ali scored a superb century and achieved his highest score in the Royal London Cup as Worcestershire Rapids defeated Northamptonshire Steelbacks by seven wickets under the Duckworth Lewis Method at the County Ground, Northampton.

The Pakistan star raced to three figures off just 78 balls when he clipped Brandon Glover off his legs for his 13th four, in addition to one six.

Azhar surpassed his previous highest Royal London Cup knock of 110 for Somerset against Essex three years ago.

He moved to within two runs of his career-best List A score of 132 not out for Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Ltd versus Lahore Blues in the National One Day Cup in Pakistan in January 2016, when he was brilliantly caught at deep mid wicket off Jack White.

His efforts played a massive part in the Rapids reaching their revised target of 254 in 39 overs with an over to spare.

Azhar’s knock was even more commendable as he required a runner (Gareth Roderick) after appearing to suffer a leg injury on 81.

He was given superb support by Taylor Cornall, who struck 61 during an opening partnership of 138 in 24.2 overs and captain Jake Libby helped him add 68 in eight overs.

Libby, a century-maker in the previous game against Derbyshire, hit the winning boundary off Brandon Glover to finish unbeaten on 31 with Ed Barnard 15 not out.

It enabled Worcestershire to secure their first win in the 2022 competition and provide a massive confidence boost.

Northamptonshire had scored 248-4, with Will Young scoring the first century of the game off 94 balls.

Worcestershire made one change from the side in action against Derbyshire on Sunday, with Roderick having recovered from a stomach bug and replacing Ed Pollock.

Barnard also resumed bowling after suffering a split finger when fielding against Yorkshire at Scarborough 10 days ago.

After winning the toss on an overcast morning, Libby opted to put the Steelbacks into bat.

Play got underway on time despite overnight rain and morning drizzle, with Joe Leach and Ben Gibbon sharing the new ball.

Leach bowled a testing opening spell in which he beat the bat several times.

Barnard at point got a hand to a stinging cut from Vasconcelos off Gibbon, which flew away to the boundary.

But Gibbon made the first breakthrough in the same over when Emilio Gay (7) went lbw to a delivery angled back in with 21 on the board.

Young then survived a confident lbw shout on two against Leach before the players left the field for light rain at 44-1 from nine overs at 11.40am.

Play was delayed for an hour and a quarter before play resumed, with the game reduced to 42 overs per side.

Northamptonshire started to accelerate, and Vasconcelos completed a 57 ball half-century with eight boundaries.

Leach came out of the attack after completing his nine-over spell on either side of the rain break.

Adam Finch, who had achieved career-best List A figures of 3-54 versus Derbyshire, came into the attack and struck in his second over.

He picked up the key wicket of Vasconcelos (70), who was deceived by a ball which nipped back in and was clean bowled at 106-2 in the 22nd over.

There was another breakthrough in the next over from Barnard when Saif Zaib was run out for nought.

He steered the all-rounder to third man and was short of his ground, attempting a second run by Gibbon’s direct hit.

Finch came close to claiming a second scalp when Lewis McManus on two edged just wide of slip and collected a fortuitous boundary.

There was another short stoppage for rain at 130-3 from 28 overs which led to a further reduction of three overs per side.

Young and McManus upped the tempo when play resumed during a partnership of 114 in 15 overs.

McManus completed a 48-ball half-century before he picked out Azhar at deep mid-wicket off Pennington in the penultimate over.

The final two overs yielded 42 runs, and Young reached three figures off the last ball of the innings when he pulled Finch for his third six. His 94-ball knock also contained nine fours.

The Rapids target was revised from 249 to 254 under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method, and Azhar and Cornall gave the Rapids a flying start.

Azhar set the tone with the third ball of the innings from Jack White with a square cut for four.

Cornall produced a superb straight drive for four off the same over as runs flowed at a good rate.

Azhar produced all sorts of strokes at White’s expense with a clip off his legs, a cover drive after moving down the pitch and a back foot drive, all bringing him boundaries.

With Cornall also scoring at an excellent rate, the century opening stand came up in just 115 balls.

Azhar pulled Ben Sanderson for his seventh boundary to reach a 55-ball fifty, and Cornall followed him to the same mark from 76 balls with a single off Ben Sanderson.

The partnership was worth 138 when Glover struck in successive overs for the home side.

Cornall (61) picked out mid-on, and Roderick tried the ramp shot and only skied a comfortable catch to keeper McManus.

After Azhar’s injury, he continued to score freely before Vasconcelos pulled off a fine catch to end his magnificent show.

But Libby and Barnard hurried the Rapids to a deserved success.

Azhar Ali does what he does best.

Scores runs when the door to kick him out his wide open. Cements his place for a bit. Then the string of failures comes back.

The cycle continues.

Worcestershire have re-signed Pakistan star Azhar Ali as an overseas player for the 2023 season after making a positive impact in his first year at New Road.

Azhar has contributed exceptionally well on the pitch in the LV=Insurance County Championship with 607 runs from eight matches at an average of 46.69, as well as hitting a brilliant 130 against Northants in the Royal London Cup.

But of equal importance has been his influence on the other players in the squad in terms of passing on knowledge and giving advice.

Worcestershire Cricket Steering Group Chairman, Paul Pridgeon, confirmed: “Azhar has loved it here and wants to come back and do a job for us again next season, and we are delighted he has signed for another year.

“Azhar has done really well for us. We think he is a brilliant cricketer, he has fitted into our dressing room, and the players love him.

“To get someone who is available for most of, if not the entire season, again is another bonus with your overseas player because I think it is going to be harder and harder to do that.

“He has had interest from other first class counties as well, but he has indicated he has really loved being at Worcestershire, and his family are settled here.”

Pridgeon added: “Azhar has really helped some of the other lads, and the most significant influence has been on Jack Haynes.

“Jack is a talented cricketer, but with the time he has spent batting with Azhar at the crease, he has looked much more reassured, calmer, and more patient.

“I think Azhar has been a great influence with him on and off the field.”

Azhar said: “Being part of the Worcestershire setup has been such an enjoyable experience for me, and I’m delighted to be coming back for another year.

“There is so much potential in this squad, and, as well as being glad that I’ve been able to play my part with the bat, I’ve been happy to pass on my knowledge and experience to other people.

“The team have played a lot of good cricket in the Championship this year and could easily have picked up another two or three wins, and I hope I can help the team to kick on next year.

“We have already strengthened for next season by signing Adam Hose and Matthew Waite, and I think the future is very bright for the Club.”

County contracts are huge.

Very big money for these guys.

How much roughly are we talking here??

It's not simple.

You'll have the basic salary, bonuses for runs scored, bonuses for 50s, bonuses for 100s, bonuses for trophies won.

I mean even lower-end you are looking at 40 to £50k per season.

Not a great start to the season for Azhar Ali

Azhar Ali speaking about the upcoming game against Sussex:

(Australia’s Steve Smith, who played for Worcestershire in 2010, will be returning to New Road in Sussex colours from Thursday 4 May.)

“It will be great for cricket fans to have the opportunity to see players of the class of Steve and Cheteshwar playing domestic cricket in the same game.

“Both of them have had superb careers, and we saw Cheteshwar’s quality with a century at New Road for Sussex in last season’s Championship game.

“I have had many battles with them over the years at Test level, and it can also only be of benefit to our bowlers to be competing against and bowling to such players and a great learning curve.”

Azhar Ali says he relishes the challenge of facing top quality bowlers after scoring an unbeaten century against a Sussex attack led in fine style by England’s Ollie Robinson.

The Pakistan star batted throughout the final day for a superb 103 not out spanning more than six hours to earn Worcestershire a draw in the LV=Insurance County Championship encounter.

Robinson finished the game with 14 wickets and was a constant threat in both innings.

But he was unable to find a way through Azhar’s defences and, with support from Adam Hose, Brett D’Oliveira and, at the conclusion of the game, Josh Tongue, secured a share of the spoils for Worcestershire.

His patience and concentration was rewarded when he turned Steve Smith to third man for his 11th boundary to reach three figures immediately before the two teams shook hands.

Azhar Ali said: “It’s quite pleasing to get that first hundred of the season because I felt like I was in good touch, especially in the first two games at Derby and Durham.

“I got in and got out, had a fifty and a couple of thirtys, and, when you are playing well, you want to make big scores.

“It was good to do it today when it was needed, and it augurs well. It was hard work out there, especially with the way Ollie Robinson was bowling on it.

“We knew it was going to be hard work and we thought if someone played a big innings it would make it easier and it was my day today.

“There were a lot of good contributions, especially Adam (Hose) and everyone played their part and at the end, the way Josh (Tongue) batted gave me a lot of confidence that we could do it.”

Azhar added: “Do I enjoy a battle of attrition? You always cherish when especially a Test bowler, or quality bowler getting some help out of the wicket, is up against you.

“When you score runs in that situation, it makes you feel much better and I enjoyed that challenge. It was quite tough.

“When the ball was hard, it started to talk again, but everyone tried hard, it’s all about partnerships, and everyone should be proud of themselves.”

Quality innings that from Azhar Ali.

He's been struggling this season but that century was much-needed for him and saved the match for Worcester.

Typical Azhar knock. Nobody can beat him on patience.

Goes too much in his shell for a modern day batter but thats how he plays I guess.

Happy for him.

SUSSEX head coach Paul Farbrace described Worcestershire's Azhar Ali as a "world class player in all conditions" after the former Pakistan international batsman's brilliant century in last week's County Championship draw.

Azhar displayed all his class and experience in a six-hour stint at the crease, an innings that guided Worcestershire to a draw with Sussex.

And afterward, former England assistant coach Farbrace explained that certain members of his squad approached Azhar for some tips.

"Azhar is an outstanding player, and he showed on Sunday he is a world-class player in all conditions," he said.

"As much as I would have liked to have seen the back of him earlier, it was a pleasure to watch him bat again. He is a fantastic man and a great advert for the game, the patience with the way he played and lined the ball up.

"He was the difference probably between us trying to sneak a victory and the game finishing as a draw, which both sides are going to learn from.

"One or two of our batters were picking his brains at the end of the game about how he plays, how he prepares. This is what county cricket needs. It needs the best players playing county cricket and, if we are going to protect county cricket and make it the game we all want it to be, we need the best players playing, and Azhar is a great example of someone.

"He just plays the game in the right way, and you can’t help but admire such a fantastic player.

"Azhar is someone you want in your dressing room, and Worcestershire have chosen wisely there because it is not just your performances as a player. It is also your personality and what you bring to the team as well."

Add another duck to it - this time in the 2nd innings. Worcestershire in deep trouble.

Azhar Ali doing his bit as senior overseas player in Worcs run chase

50* at the moment, Worcestershire require 169 runs to win with 8 wickets remaining

Not great numbers for Azhar.

No shock really he fails in 90% of his inns then will get 1 x 50 / 100 plus score to make his average look good.

A real mixed bag so far.

Average of 32 for an experienced international player is poor.

Looks painful slow with his reactions. Worcestershire have put a lot of faith in him and I know Jack Haynes has enjoyed his presence in the dressing room, but he needs to produce runs. He looks worse than he did for PK in his last 3 years

Worcestershire Rapids continued their impressive run of results as they defeated Glamorgan by four wickets in the Metro Bank Cup One-Day Cup, with spinners Josh Baker and Brett D’Oliveira and opening batter Azhar Ali all playing key roles at New Road.

They followed up the mid-week away success over Durham with another excellent all-round performance to reach their 200 target with 8.3 overs to spare.

Glamorgan were bowled out for 199 in just 40.2 overs in front of a 3,500 plus crowd after being put into bat by Rapids captain Jake Libby.

Pace bowler Dillon Pennington picked up two early wickets, and, as against Durham, the spin duo of Baker and D’Oliveira proved effective.

They shared five more wickets to add to the six at the Seat Unique Riverside.

Slow left armer Baker is regaining the rhythm and form he had demonstrated before his lengthy lay-off with a back injury.

D’Oliveira’s leg spin is being given its full rein by Libby and causing a string of problems to opposition batters.

Azhar Ali, a member of the Somerset side which won the tournament in 2019, then ensured Worcestershire would have few alarms in reaching their target.

He completed an 84-ball half-century with three boundaries and went on to make 78 from 104 balls with four fours and two sixes.

Azhar received excellent support from fellow opener D’Oliveira and then new signing Rob Jones in a decisive century partnership.

Worcestershire are looking full of confidence after their run to the quarter-finals in the Vitality Blast and back-to-back wins to fuel their LV=Insurance County Championship promotion challenge.

Libby put Glamorgan into bat, and opener Tom Bevan survived two lbw shouts in the opening over from Joe Leach.

Bevan and Ed Byrom provided a useful platform in accumulating 36 runs from the opening seven overs, but then the game swung Worcestershire’s way.

Bevan drove loosely at Ben Gibbon and was taken by Azhar at first slip, and then Colin Ingram was run out at the non-striker’s end after Gibbon deflected a straight drive from Byrom onto the stumps.

Pennington bowled a probing spell and was rewarded with a double breakthrough as he continued the form shown in the last two LV=Insurance Championship games, which yielded 14 wickets.

Byrom tried to shoulder arms but only inside-edged a delivery onto the stumps, and his next over accounted for Billy Root, who was caught behind of a ball which nipped away.

Ben Kellaway looked in good touch as he and Glamorgan captain Kiran Carlson looked to repair the innings.

He had one early slice of good fortune when edging Pennington just wide of second slip but otherwise looked composed and reeled off a series of fine strokes in adding 65 in 12 overs with Carlson.

But the introduction of Baker and D’Oliveira brought about a decline in Glamorgan’s fortunes as the last six wickets fell for 62 runs in 14.1 overs.

Carlson tried to hit D’Oliveira over the top but only found Kashif Ali at long on, and then Alex Horton turned D’Oliveira to mid-wicket and ventured a few paces out of his crease but failed to beat Libby’s throw to keeper Ben Cox.

Kellaway completed a 48 ball half-century with seven boundaries, but wickets fell at regular intervals at the other end.

Andy Gorvin played back to D’Oliveira and was bowled, and Harry Podmore cut Baker into the hands of Matthew Waite at backward point.

Jamie McIlroy pushed forward to Baker and was also bowled before Kellaway’s fine knock brought an end to the innings when he lofted D’Oliveira to long on.

When Worcestershire batted, D’Oliveira (22) was caught behind off an inside edge after attempting to drive Podmore with 36 on the board.

Azhar and new signing Rob Jones then featured in the decisive stand of exactly 100 in 20 overs.

Jones, on loan from Lancashire before beginning a three-year deal next summer, and Azhar suffered few alarms.

Azhar hit Ben Morris for a six over long off and then leg-glanced the next ball for four to complete the century stand.

(37) Jones went down the wicket to Carlson and fell to a splendid catch by Bevan at long on.

Azhar’s fine innings ended when he was stumped down the leg side off a wide from Carlson.

Kashif Ali (11) and Ben Cox (4) looked as if they wanted to end proceedings in double quick time, and both fell to Carlson, at long on and long off, respectively, while Matthew Waite (6) sliced Gorvin to short third man.

But Libby saw Worcestershire over the finishing line.

Huge blessing in disguise that he retired for Pakistan. We suffered from his constipated scratching around at number 3 giving all the momentum to the opposition bowlers for the last ten years.

In the first series after his retirement, we have already seen Shan Masood counter attacking and putting pressure on the bowlers

Averaging just 25 this season in the County Championship Division 2.

In 22 innings just 2 hundreds and 1 fifty.

He's had a bit of a nightmare.

Absolutely awful. The guy is in his mid 40s and scammed an extra 5 years out from PK and now this. Surely he should bat with freedom but his batting for Worcester is constipated

the way Azhar Ali bats it more feels like that a tailender is playing, no control no balance at all!
That’s because he was a tail ender who could bowl proper leg spin before converting himself into a batsman.

He’s never looked technically sound because he’ll always be a makeshift batsman who had the fortune of spending his peak years playing in the UAE.

Thanks to Misbah he managed to play more tests than what was warranted.

Now averaging just 24 this season in the County Championship Division 2.

A real struggle for him.
