The body was found from Lakki Marwat in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in Pakistan. (Representational)

Islamabad: A kidnapped Pakistani-American woman's body was found from Lakki Marwat in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in Pakistan on Saturday.
Wajiha Swati came to Pakistan from England on October 16 to resolve property issues with her ex-husband, Rizwan Habib. He "confessed to killing" Swati during police interrogation, reported Geo News.

The sources said that Swati came to Pakistan from England on October 16 to resolve property issues with her ex-husband.

The US woman was murdered the same day she arrived in Rawalpindi, they added.

A case relating to her kidnapping was registered at Morgah Police Station in Rawalpindi on the complaint of her son.

According to the sources, Habib said that he had killed Swati on October 16 and buried her body in Hangu.

On December 23, the Lahore High Court Rawalpindi Bench's Justice Raja Shahid Mehmood Abbasi ordered the city police officer (CPO) to recover Swati soon otherwise the court will summon the Inspector General of Police. The court had ordered the police to present her in court after recovering her, reported Geo News.

City Police Officer Rawalpindi Sajid Kiani, addressing a press conference, said that the case is under investigation and the police will not divulge too many details at this point, reported Geo News.

Kiyani did reveal some aspects that came to light during investigations, such as Swati arriving in Pakistan on October 16 and being received by her former husband, Rizwan Habib.

RAWALPINDI: A day after police found the body of missing Pakistani-American woman Wajiha Swati, further revelations have come to light in the murder, including the prime suspect's intention of fleeing to Poland.

Police sources told Geo News on Sunday that Swati's ex-husband, Rizwan Habib, who has been arrested for allegedly murdering her and who police claimed a day earlier had "confessed" to the crime, disclosed further details to the interrogation team.

According to the police, Habib revealed that his father — who has also been arrested on charges of aiding and abetting the murder — had said that "it would cost only Rs50,000 to kill Wajiha".

Police said that Habib told interrogation officers that he killed his ex-wife Wajiha with "a sharp instrument" and shifted her body to Hangu.

They further said that Habib confessed to skillfully hiding Wajiha's body in a car and taking it to a close relative's house in Hangu.

They further said that the suspect told police that he had planned to seek asylum and citizenship in Poland after the murder, for which he had obtained a passport.

On the other hand, sources within Swati's family have confirmed that her body will be sent to the United States.

According to the sources, Wajiha's children have refused to bury their mother's body in Pakistan, due to which the US embassy officials are making arrangements to send the body to New York.

Further physical remand of suspect granted to police

Meanwhile, a court granted police further physical remand of Habib, handing him over for three more days.

In addition, Habib's father and a worker of Habib's were also sent into police custody for three days.

The police said that they have to obtain the murder weapon and the car used to transport the body to Hangu from the suspects.

They added that they have to probe the worker's alleged involvement in transporting the body.

Swati's body found in Lakki Marwat
The body of Wajiha Swati, who went missing from Rawalpindi in October, was found from Lakki Marwat, police said yesterday.

City Police Officer Rawalpindi Sajid Kiani, addressing a press conference, said that the case is under investigation and the police will not divulge too many details at this point.

Kiani did reveal some aspects that came to light during investigations, such as Swati arriving in Pakistan on October 16 and being received by her former husband Rizwan Habib.

He went on to say that three people — Habib, his father, and one other suspect — have been arrested in connection with the case.

The CPO said that Wajiha's body was found from Lakki Marwat's Pizu area and that it is being brought to Islamabad.

He said that further investigations are underway and more arrests are expected.

The police officer said that the probe team gathered sufficient evidence after which the arrests were made. He added that the US embassy sought details from the police owing to Swati being a US citizen.

"How the murder was carried out, what weapon was used, is something it would be too premature to comment on," the CPO said.

He vowed that the police will ensure the culprits get their just desserts.

Ex-husband has confessed to killing Swati, claim police sources

A day ago, sources within the police claimed that Habib has confessed to killing his ex-wife.

Habib "confessed to his crime" during police interrogation, the sources said.

The sources said that Swati came to Pakistan from England on October 16 to resolve property issues with her ex-husband.

The US woman was murdered the same day she arrived in Rawalpindi, they added.

A case relating to her abduction was registered at Morgah Police Station in Rawalpindi on the complaint of her son.

According to the sources, Habib said that he had killed Swati on October 16 and buried her body in Hangu.

On the directions of RPO Rawalpindi, a police team was sent to Hangu to recover the body.

DPO Ikramullah Khan said that the police arrested Habib's father last night from Hangu on charges of aiding and abetting the murder.

The DPO said that Swati's body has yet to be exhumed.

LHC orders authorities to recover kidnapped Pak-American woman

On December 23, the Lahore High Court Rawalpindi Bench's Justice Raja Shahid Mehmood Abbasi ordered the city police officer (CPO) to recover Swati soon otherwise the court will summon the Inspector General of Police. The court had ordered the police to present her in court after recovering her.

Rawalpindi police arrested Habib and produced him before the judicial magistrate Zaheer Safdar. The court handed over the accused to the police on a four-day physical remand.

The Rawalpindi Police arrested on Saturday three more suspects alleged to be involved in transporting the body of Wajiha Swati, a US citizen of Pakistani origin, to Dera Ismail Khan from Rawalpindi.

Last month, Wajiha’s former husband confessed to killing her upon her arrival in the country earlier in October 2021.

As of now, the police have arrested a total of six suspects, including a woman, who are accused of being involved in the murder.

Among the suspects who were produced before the Civil Duty Judge Talat Mahmood today were former husband Rizwan Habib, father-in-law of the victim Hurriyatullah and employees Sultan Khan, Zahid Yusuf, Yusuf Masih and Zahida.

The investigation team informed the court that the vehicle used in transporting the body of the deceased to DI Khan was to be recovered from the accused.

It further revealed that Zahida was assisting in the murder of the slain and her mobile phone was also used. The three recently arrested suspects have confessed to their involvement in a gruesome murder, the police stated.

“There are other things to be recovered, especially mobile phones,” the police, requesting a five-day remand from the court.

The court granted three-day physical remand of the accused and ordered the police to produce them again on January 4.

The body of a US-Pakistani woman, Wajiha Swati, was flown out to the United States on Friday from the Islamabad International Airport.

The US embassy staff also accompanied the body to the airport. Swati's body was handed over to her legal heirs a day earlier, after the interior ministry issued a no-objection certificate to transfer her body to the US.

Earlier last night, the body was first shifted to the Rawalpindi Medical College from the Rawalpindi District Hospital for embalming (preserving against decaying) where the US diplomatic staff was also present.

Swati had reached Pakistan on October 16 from the US via the UK and was brutally murdered the next day by her former husband Rizwan Habib and his accomplices.

The body was transported to Khyber-Pakhtunkwa by the killers and it remained buried in a deep pit for 63 days before the Rawalpindi police recovered it and shifted it to Rawalpindi.

The police have arrested the slain woman’s ex-husband Rizwan Habib, his father, their domestic worker and three other accused.

A British man has been found guilty of plotting to kill a Pakistani political blogger in the Netherlands after being hired as a hitman with a fee of £100,000.

A jury trial convicted supermarket worker Muhammed Gohir Khan, 31, of plotting to kill the blogger and liberal activist Ahmad Waqass Goraya after being recruited by middlemen apparently based in Pakistan.

The judge postponed sentencing until March 11.

Prosecutor Alison Morgan said Goraya, who lives with his wife and two children in the Netherlands, appeared to have been targeted for speaking out against the Pakistani authorities in satirical social media posts.

Khan was hired by "others who appeared to be based in Pakistan", Morgan told the jury at Kingston-upon-Thames.

In 2018, Goraya had "received information from the FBI that he was on a kill list", she added, saying he feared an orchestrated attack.

"He believes that some of the threats that he received were from internet trolls” but that others were in fact being led and orchestrated, she alleged.

Goraya, who has lived outside Pakistan for more than a decade, did not attend the hearings.

Khan, from east London, was charged in June last year with conspiring with unknown other people to murder Goraya in the Netherlands. He was arrested after returning to the UK by train.

British police liaised with the Dutch authorities to build up a dossier of his encrypted communications with middlemen on WhatsApp and Signal and security camera footage of his movements.

After travelling to the Netherlands on Eurostar, Khan spent days watching Goraya's home in Rotterdam and bought a professional chef’s knife. He returned to the UK after realising the blogger was away.

Khan, who pleaded not guilty at his trial held at Kingston-upon-Thames in southwest London, acknowledged sending the messages and travelling to Rotterdam, but claimed he was only seeking money and never intended to commit the killing.

"He was enthusiastic about carrying out the killing to earn the money and to carry out further attacks in the future," Morgan said.

Goraya has previously reported violent attacks and threats made against him.

A luxury sedan, Bentley Mulsanne, was recovered from Karachi on Saturday by Pakistan Customs on information provided by a British law enforcement agency.

The vehicle, earlier reported stolen in London, was found parked in the driveway of a residence in the posh DHA locality of Karachi.

Customs was informed of the vehicle's presence and an investigation was conducted locally to trace the stolen luxury sedan.

The investigation confirmed that the stolen car was parked inside a Karachi residence. Customs officials raided the location with a court order and seized the Bentley.

The vehicle costs more than $300,000 and it is the brand's largest and most expensive handcrafted sedan.

The presence of the luxury car in Karachi is itself a mystery as many were wondering how did it reach Pakistan. Surprisingly, Sindh Excise and Motor Vehicle Department also issued a local number plate to the vehicle, putting a question mark on the efficiency of the department.

Officials took the owner of the residence Jamil Shafi and the broker who sold him the vehicle into custody after the house owner failed to provide adequate documents.

The registration of the vehicle has also been forged, said Customs officials. "The registration number of the stolen vehicle is BRS-279."

According to the FIR filed by Customs officials, a tax of more than Rs300 million was evaded due to the smuggling of the stolen vehicle.

On the information provided by the broker, Naveed Balwani, teams have been formed to arrest Naveed Yameen, who is said to be the head of an international car smuggling racket.

As per initial information provided by the suspects, Balwani brokered the deal between Shafi and Yameen.

Sources told The Express Tribune that there are already cases registered against Yameen in Karachi and Hyderabad.

Customs sources said that for the registration of such luxury vehicles, one needs sales permission from the Ministry of External Affairs, NOC from Pakistan Customs and receipt of payment of duty and taxes.

However, the Sindh Excise and Motor Vehicle Department registered the stolen vehicle without fulfilling all the legal requirements, raising eye eyebrows whether the excise officials in Sindh were also part of the scam.

Sources further said that an inquiry against the involved officials was also on the cards.

The Customs Court has rejected the bail plea of the accused involved in the illegal registration of a Bentley car, stolen from London and smuggled to Karachi, ARY News reported on Wednesday.

The court pronounced the reserved verdict on a petition filed by an accused Naveed Yamin, seeking bail in a Bentley car recovery case.

However, the court accepted the bail plea of another accused Jameel Sheikh in the luxury car. The Customs Court has directed him to submit surety bonds of Rs2mn for availing the relief.

US national Wajiha Swati’s ex-husband sentenced to death for her murder

A Rawalpindi court handed down a death sentence and ten years of imprisonment on Saturday to the ex-husband of US national of Pakistani origin, Wajiha Swati, after finding him guilty in her murder case.

Rizwan Habib Bangash had confessed last December to killing his former wife — 47-year-old Wajiha Farooq Swati — and burying her body at his servant’s house in Lakki Marwat. Swati had gone missing after arriving in Rawalpindi on Oct 16, 2021 and her body was exhumed by police on December 25.

A missing person’s complaint following Swati’s disappearance was filed by Abdullah Mehdi Ali, a resident of Hayatabad Peshawar, who identified himself as the woman’s son.

By January 4, 2022, police had arrested six accused in the murder case, including Hurriatullah, the father of Bangash, and Sultan, his servant. The five accused apart from Bangash were charged with aiding and abetting the murder.

At today’s hearing, Additional Sessions Judge Muhammad Afzal Majoka, sentenced Hurriatullah and Sultan to seven years in prison each. The other three suspects, namely Yousuf, Zahida and Rashid, were acquitted due to lack of evidence.

A team of US investigators also attended today’s hearing.

According to police, it had emerged during the investigation that Swati was demanding back her property worth millions of rupees, which she had transferred in the name of Bangash before their divorce.

Woman, 3 daughters slaughtered in Karachi’s Shamsi Society: police

A woman and her three daughters were killed — allegedly by her husband — in Karachi’s Shamsi Society on Tuesday, police said.

Korangi Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Abraiz Ali Abbasi told Dawn.com that at 3pm, suspect Fawad, 42, “slaughtered” his wife and children in their house and then attempted suicide.

“The suspect was immediately taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, where he is in critical condition,” he said.

According to the officer, the crime took place in the upper portion of the building — the doors of which were locked.

“Upon hearing screams, the mother- and sister-in-law of the accused broke into the portion and found the man in critical condition and others dead,” he said.

SSP Abbasi said that police’s forensic team sealed the crime scene to collect evidence, while the dead bodies were sent for a post-mortem examination.

He added that the murder weapon was recovered while further investigation was underway.

Separately, in a brief interrogation with the suspect’s sister-in-law, the police found that there had been some friction between the couple over a host of problems but ruled out any “serious issues”.

Al-Falah Station House Officer (SHO) Badar Shakeel said that among the deceased was the 40-year-old mother and her three daughters aged 16, 12 and 10.

He added that the suspect was a salesman at a private company in the city.

The first information report (FIR) of the crime is yet to be registered.

Meanwhile, autopsy of the deceased carried out by police surgeon Dr Summaiya Syed revealed that the deaths occurred due to “irreversible hemorrhagic shock leading to cardiorespiratory failures caused by cut-throat”.

She ruled out intoxication and sexual assault, stating that samples had been collected for toxicology screening, semen serology, and DNA.

Syed further opined that it appeared that the wife put up resistance as there were ‘deep defense wounds’ on her both hands. “There were no signs that the teenager daughters have put up any resistance.”

The police surgeon added that the suspect had received life-threatening wounds and his chances of survival were low.

Later in the day, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, Governor Kamran Tessori, and Karachi Administrator Murtaza Wahab took notice of the incident and sought a detailed report from the police.

They also expressed condolences over the deaths.

Gullible depositors lose ‘Rs420m’ in Ponzi scheme

KARACHI: Hundreds of people, mostly women, were robbed of around Rs420 million allegedly by a Karachi-based social media influencer and businesswoman, who ran a monthly ballot committee system — an age-old method of interest-free savings and pooling money commonly known as BC or committees — without keeping any written records of depositors/contributors ending the whole scheme in total fraud.

Sidra Humaid, owner of a home-based food business ‘Daily Bites’ and handicraft start-up ‘Cróise’, allegedly defrauded hundreds of her depositors by announcing on social media that she had “no means to pay off her committees” to around 200 contributors leaving them in utter shock and disbelief.

Since last week, social media is abuzz with stories of victims of what many described as a Ponzi scheme. Many victims reached out to each other and formed WhatsApp groups to take action against Ms Humaid.

However, it appears no one has approached police or the Federal Investigation Agency against Ms Humaid so far in a bid to resolve the issue on their own.

On her part, Ms Humaid, whose whereabouts are not known, posted on social media: “Please guys don’t panic. Your money will be returned in the coming months.”

One of the victims told Dawn that Ms Humaid had pulled off the ‘scam’ of around Rs150m to Rs200m.

Sana Adnan, who lost Rs150,000, said most of the people knew Ms Humaid for the past seven to 10 years. “I joined two of her Committees. I was paying her Rs50,000 per month in one committee while in a 20-month committee, I was paying Rs25,000,” she said.

“Under the conventional system, each month, one member of the committee is paid the total amount. But, we found out that every month some ‘ghost’ member or someone in ‘her family’ is paid the total amount while we, all the members, kept paying the monthly committee throughout all months. It turned out that all the money was actually going to Ms Humaid herself,” she added.

Another victim, who wished not to be named, said: “For the past few months Ms Humaid had been posting stories on social media about her new fancy belongings like expensive cell phones, watches, etc, which explained where all the money was going, because her husband is a freelancer and she can’t make all that money from selling lasagne.”

The man, who had allegedly lost Rs970,500, said his sister told him about the committee in January and he deposited Rs50,000 per month against a Rs500,000 payout in the scheme.

He said he also took part in a business committee in which the payout was Rs800,000 against Rs100,000 per month and another where he had to pay Rs300,000 per month against Rs2.4m, but he didn’t get paid.

“I talked to Ms Humaid’s father. He said they will only return the amount which was transacted in her account...but the thing is we used to send money directly into the account of the person who had slot in that particular month at her behest.”

Dawn tried to contact Ms Humaid, but she neither received the call, nor responded to text messages.

The Airport Security Force (ASF) seized 2.433 kilogrammes of crystal meth concealed in ihram — the plain clothing worn by Muslims on Hajj or Umrah pilgrimages — of a passenger during an operation at Multan Airport on Monday, Express News reported.

The passenger, Rizwan Haider, who was travelling to Dubai, had cleverly hidden the narcotics in his clothes, Ihram, towels, and waistcoats.

According to an ASF spokesperson, the mentioned quantity of drugs was recovered by carefully examining the clothes. The remaining ice drug absorbed by the garments will be extracted through an ANF chemical process.

After the initial investigation, the suspect, along with the seized narcotics, has been handed over to the ANF for further legal action.

Last year, the ANF had recovered drugs worth over Rs34 billion, concealed in rosewater bottles, at the Karachi International Containers Terminal.

Addressing a press conference here, MQM-P leader Khawaja Izharul Hassan pointed out that his party was constantly raising its voice regarding the situation in Karachi.

Talking about the appointment of Ghulam Nabi Memon as Sindh Inspector General (IG), he alleged that the provincial government had “blackmailed” the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) in order to appoint someone of their own choosing.

“An IG of your choosing, a home minister and a chief minister were appointed. The news of these appointment triggered a wave of happiness through the dacoits in riverine areas from Karachi to Kashmore,” he said.

Hassan alleged, “They [dacoits] have been given the licence to kill after the appointment of the Sindh IG, the home minister and the chief minister.”

Highlighting the urgency of the situation, the MQM-P leader emphasised that the federal government must take decisive action to curb the bloodshed and restore peace in Karachi.

He underscored the need for the Rangers to be granted equal powers throughout the province, emphasising that the current jurisdiction limited to Karachi is “insufficient to effectively address the prevailing challenges”.

Taking over the presser, MQM-P’s Faisal Sabzwari noted that PPP had been ruling the province for the last 16 years, yet citizens from Karachi to Kashmore were not safe.

He pointed out that multiple citizens were killed while resisting robberies during Ramadan. Billions of rupees of mobile phones were snatched in the metropolis, he added.

Called on Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi to visit the city and summon Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah.

Sabzwari said that no action was being taken against armed gangs and dacoits in Kashmore or against street crime in Karachi. He called for summoning provincial officials and for the federal interior minister to form a committee.

“We requested that a neighbourhood watch system should be implemented. If the Sindh government won’t, then we announce that we will,” he said, explaining that concerned residents would guard their areas and work on the security and safety of their own neighbourhoods.

He called for an increase in police patrolling in middle-class and poorer areas of the city. He said that mainly motorcycles and mobile phones were stolen by street criminals.

A day earlier, Sindh High Court (SHC) Chief Justice Aqeel Ahmed Abbasi set one-month deadline for the provincial authorities to restore law and order in the province.
